This Charming Region Was Named Europe’s Most Overlooked Winter Getaway Destination

"A narrow port canal that winds through the waterfront and is ideal for kayaking, offering a close-up view of the town’s charming streets and vivid Art Nouveau facades; paddling here gives an intimate, scenic way to experience the maritime atmosphere even in winter." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. A Rugged Ski Touring Adventure through Western Norway's Sunnmøre Alps

"Hotel BrosundetThis city hotel—a reimagining of an Ålesund harborside fishing warehouse by Norwegian starchitects Snøhetta, complete with a roaring five-story lobby fireplace—is almost too cool for its Art Nouveau surroundings."

Hotel Brosundet, a Design Boutique Hotel Ålesund, Norway

"This stylish hotel is set in a renovated, Art Nouveau-style warehouse by the Ålesund Strait. It offers free Wi-Fi and an excellent seafood restaurant. Rooms include a flat-screen TV and tea/coffee facilities. Extra long beds, minibars and cable TV are standard in Hotel Brosundet’s rooms. Many feature sea views, original wooden beams and slanted roofs. Situated by the North Sea, locally caught fresh fish is a natural speciality at Restaurant Maki. Beer-steamed mussels and Japanese-style salmon are just a couple of options. The menu changes once a month. Jugenstilsenteret (Art Nouveau Centre) is 100 metres from Brosundet Hotel." - My Boutique Hotel (en)

Hotel Brosundet (Alesund, Norway) 1 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"The picturesque port town of Ålesund, Norway isn’t exactly one of the world’s style capitals, but it’s got a very hip family-owned boutique hotel in the form of the atmospheric Hotel Brosundet. The classic building’s wood beams and original architecture remain in place, updated with contemporary interiors and cozy furniture — the lobby’s fireplace is a particularly inviting space. Rooms vary in size; some feature views of the water, others the surrounding city. There’s a stylish little restaurant with seasonal outdoor seating, as well as a small bar serving craft cocktails, and the afternoon tea service is accompanied by live music." - Tablet Hotels

A Review of Norway’s Hotel Brosundet

"An upscale but unpretentious four-star waterfront inn in Ålesund that blends comfy Scandinavian design—minimalist rooms, airy high ceilings, wooden floors and neutral-toned furnishings—with modern amenities such as a fitness center, bottom-floor sauna, onsite bar and restaurant, and a breakfast buffet. The property is especially noted for a romantic outdoor twin-bath experience at sunset (two side-by-side tubs with scented soaps and bubbles) offering a picture-perfect view of the town’s main channel, fairytale Art Nouveau facades and distant snow-capped mountains. Seafood-focused dining is central to the stay, staff can arrange fjord boat trips, and the hotel collaborates with nearby fine-dining under the boutique 62°NORD brand. Practical details: roughly 131 keys, a typical starting nightly rate around $227, and convenient access to Ålesund Airport, Vigra (AES)."

We loved our stay at Hotel Brosundet. The hotel itself is beautifully decorated, and the views of the channel are lovely. It is cozy and comfortable, and the breakfast is a typical European offering that is very good. Having access to the sauna and cold plunge was wonderful, and the gym and yoga room were great, too. My only helpful suggestions would be to book far ahead if you want a massage, as we were not able to book massages during our four-day stay. And there was also a mix up with our bathtub reservations, so double check those if you make them. The tubs are a fun experience if you have 45 minutes to spare.

The hotel is in a great location overlooking the Ålesundet inner harbour. They have parking at a dedicated garage which is about 400m away but costs a pricey 350 NOK per day. Alternatively, there is street parking in the area which operates from 9am to 4pm and may work out cheaper (use the EasyPark app for convenience).||Our room was on the opposite side of the harbour with a view of the street. It was minimalist in design - no wardrobes just hanger space - and lacked amenities that we would have expected for the price (such as air-conditioning, a safe and a coffee machine). As we faced the street, there was a fair amount of noise from people at night given that we had to keep the windows open due to the lack of air conditioning...but it was manageable for our one night. ||The small gym is modern and stylish, and the sauna overlooking the harbour is quite nice. Theoretically, you can jump into the harbour straight from the boat platform adjacent to the sauna, but we didn't like the look of the water which had a film of diesel oil and lots of algae. ||There are also two bathtubs on the terrace overlooking the platform and harbour beyond. You have to book these and they are advertised as a tranquil experience (at 550 NOK per person). However, what we witnessed when we were sat in the sauna was quite the opposite. A couple were relaxing in their tubs with their glass of wine when a tour boat docked and over twenty business men and women disembarked and used the small space around the tubs to get changed and chat loudly about their adventure! The poor couple sunk into their tubs and looked very distraught!!||On the plus side, the breakfast buffet was pretty good.

Great location, cool architecture, cozy and clean room and great service. My wife loved this hotel, lobby was welcoming, plus lots of places to sit and read or converse. Food and service was great (and I’m super picky). There are like 4 food options connected with hotel that were all fantastic (cafe, hybrid dining, and two restaurants). Staff was great—if there was more to do in Alesund we’d stay longer than 2 nights. Same group runs other great hotels.

My wife and youngest daughter stayed 3 nights in this hotel as we visited Ålesund and Geiranger. The hotel is in a stunning location, at the heart of Ålesund. Service was great and attentive. Our room (junior suite) was well-equipped and faced the canal outside between the two main islands. Breakfast was great with all that you could ask for, with many different places to sit. Even though the hotel was full, it did not feel crowded. We tried the gym and sauna and even took a swim in the canal as it was unusually hot. Sleep quality was ok but as we needed to keep the windows open due to the heat, the partying on the boats across the canal did not go unnoticed. If I would think of one improvement it would be for the hotel to install safety boxes in the hotel room. At least our room did not have one and it would be nice to be able to leave valuables comfortably when using the gym for example. But all in all an excellent stay! Recommended!

Amazing hotel in the center of the "Venice of Norway". Beautiful rooms with modern amenities. Awesome views, connected to, and in walking distance of restaurants, pubs, and all the town offers. Bathtubs and sauna available outside, and then cool off with a plunge into the water! Exhilarating! The honey moon suite is in a light house a short walk away!

What a lovely hotel in the heart of Ålesund city centre! Straightforward check in processes, clean and cute rooms and a lovely well-stocked breakfast! The gym in this hotel is so well-situated with an outside part where you can hang out in the sauna! The uppermost floor rooms are cute attic-style with low ceilings but knowing that, we were not concerned at all! Added to the personality of our rooms! Felt at home for the night in this beautiful city. Thank you for the home away from home. Amazing!

A Perfect Blend of Elegance and Comfort Hotel Brosundet is truly a gem in the heart of Ålesund. The ambiance is warm and inviting, blending historic charm with modern sophistication. The interiors are thoughtfully designed every detail from the lighting to the furniture adds to the cozy yet refined atmosphere. The food is exceptional, with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients presented beautifully. The views of the harbor and surrounding fjords are simply breathtaking, especially at sunrise and sunset. It’s a place where comfort meets style, and every corner reflects quality. Highly recommended for anyone looking to experience the best of Ålesund in a serene and stylish setting.

I loved this hotel! Our small group tour of 18 people stayed here two nights and I could have stayed longer! The architecture is fascinating and the room was very comfortable with a beautiful view of the harbor. Staff were friendly and efficient. We had a group dinner at the restaurant and it was very good. The hotel is perfectly located in a quiet section yet easily walkable to everywhere. I would absolutely stay here again if I'm in Alesund!
