5 of the best craft beer taprooms in Europe - SilverKris

"Launched in 2014 in a former monastery in the De Pijp neighbourhood, this immensely popular Amsterdam brewery has expanded to three other city locations, each with its own brewpub. The drinks menu is extensive—from light pilsners and sour fruit beers to barrel-aged barley wine—and is complemented by pub grub such as tacos and burgers." - Delle Chan

Google
Fantastic brewery with lots of beers to choose from and plenty of bar food and snacks available. Really good atmosphere. Loved the beer. Definitely worth another visit next time I'm in Amsterdam.

Google
Big place. Also pretty popular and a lot of tables were reserved. Brewery bar so they serve their own brews on tap. Tried the Pilsner which was very well made. Staff was efficient and helpful. Didn’t try the food.

Cristina

Google
Great place for some drinks and to enjoy a pub quiz with your friends! They have an English pub quiz every week, and we attended once and had a lot of fun. I think it is very well organized and quite professional. They have a nice selection of drinks, and also some food and bites. With the pub quiz we had the burger deal - I had the falafel burger which was ok, but nothing special. However the sweet potato fries were amazing. My friends enjoyed their burgers though, so that's a plus! Buit I would recommend the place more for drinks. The place is quite spacious, but I definitely recommend making a reservation. The staff is super friendly. Would love to come back again for the pub quiz!

Google
Brewery and burger place. Great range of beers of their own. The IPA is top notch. Fantastic location, lots of different types of searing inside. We settled on high tables near the bar. Good burgers! Stayed for a couple of beers. Great atmosphere. Can be a pitstop place or a session in itself. Prices ok.

Kris

Google
A very cool place with great beer and friendly service.

Louisa van R.

Google
Great experience! The chef Ibrahim was great! Great burgers, and great staff!

Google
Don’t go here for food. Drinks came immediately, beer was good, people were nice, but the kitchen did not function. Went for a quick snack and fries took 30 minutes to get to us on a slow Monday night, and were delivered to the wrong table. Fun place to get a drink but the food was not it.

Peter P.

Google
One of the beat brewed beer bars in town. Has a bunch of different seating options and serves some really incredible beer. Loved all the flavours of the beers here. I especially liked the triple. The staff are super friendly and the food is really really good for a bar. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a good beer. I would recommend booking a table ahead of time as this place is very popular and gets quite full quickly especially towards the evenings. Highly recommended

Yelp
Only three stars because I think this brewery does not do a good job at its core assigment: brewing. The beers I tasted were without exception novelty beers, with overly fruity, herby or bitter tastes. Get your pilsener right and other basics right, first! The food however was excellent. Troost has gone full vegetarian on their burgers and this was the first time in my life I tasted that vegetarian burger replacements have a future. Texture and flavours were spot on. Wouldn't mind coming back for the burgers and will accept that the beers are not as I would like them.

Yelp
I hadn't been here in quite a while and decided to try it again. It's a fairly large place with good free Internet. I'm giving a star to its relaxed casualness, so take it or leave it as to the type of place you might want to go to. I enjoyed my Belgian blonde ale, vegetarian bitterballen and goat cheese flammkuchen. I found the portions to be generous and the service to be friendly and helpful. I plan to go back and take a friend so that in itself adds a star to the review.

Yelp
Amazing spot for great local beer and food. Their veggie platter is one of the best things I've ever ordered. There are lots of great beer choices and great service. I would recommend this for anyone visiting the area.
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
Nice brewery! I had the Belgian blonde, it was tasty! There were a lot of seats inside as well as some outdoor seating. Good stop in Amsterdam!

Brianne S.

Yelp
Visited this awesome brewery while on vacation and I wish we had something like this back at home! It was a very cool, chill spot with plenty of room inside and a handful of tables outside which all are equipped with heaters so it's comfortable. There were a good variety on tap, except for one time they were literally out of everything but we found something else that we liked. I tried the IPA and the Honey beer and both were very crisp and fresh. They had a menu with little bites but we didn't try any. It's a nice spot to stop for a beer after a long day of walking and sightseeing, and I could see this as a nice spot to meet with friends after work if you're from the area.
google avatar

Rebecca W.

Yelp
Delicious beer in a cozy atmosphere!! The staff are very nice. I really appreciated that there were vegetarian options on the menu, although we only had some beer.
google avatar

Michelle F.

Yelp
Very warm and cozy interior. Definitely a local hangout for millenials. Very crowded on the weekend nights but I believe you can call ahead to reserve a table. I found a stool at the bar and proceeded to order a flight of their own craft draft beers. They were served at the perfect temperature and I enjoyed them all. Favorite was the Honingblond at 7.0% ABV. It was flavorful without an aftertaste. Everyone was friendly and I didn't feel to out of place not being a local. I did not try any of the food but next time I may order the tacos. They sound delicious.
google avatar

Ryan P.

Yelp
Cool place, nice beer menu, maybe not the fastest service but that's only a problem because the beers are small and SUPER tasty. Every drink I tried there was good, but the best hands down was the New England IPA, which I wasn't expecting much out of but it ended up being my favorite beer of my 12 day European trip. This place is definitely worth a quick stop if you're a tourist who's only in town for a few days, or it also looks really worth it as a regular spot to meet up with friends or have dinner after work if you're new to the area.

Yelp
Brouwerij Troost de Pijp was recommended by a foreign exchange student I met at another brewery. After drinking beer all day we worked U.K. Quite the appetite an decided to try a new place The service was ok. You def need to make a reservation. We walked in at 5:00 and every table was booked for the night. We got lucky and ended up eating at a side bar. It took a little long for the waitress to come by but the restaurant was busy. We ordered the bitterballen which is my new favorite dutch snack. The bitterballen came out piping hot and were delicious. I then ordered a burger with fries. The fries were hot and crispy! The burger was good but the consistency was a bit off. I found the texture to be more like a meatloaf. It tasted good but wasn't the juicy burger that I expected. The

Yelp
Ended up at both Troost locations during my weekend in Amsterdam. In a nutshell: Local brewery with a selection for all beer drinkers. Unique (and relatively new) space with plenty of seating and and a nice backdrop of the beer vats. Great food menu! Troost was our last stop on our Friday night out in Amsterdam. It was busy but not jam-packed with people. We quickly found a couple of bar stools and ordered a few lagers. With all their beers on tap or bottled, I don't think you would have any trouble finding your beer. Since you aren't bound to the standard London pint, you have more chances to try and find exactly what you're looking for (without getting completely smashed). We were at the De Pijp location on Saturday afternoon. There is plenty of both outdoor and indoor seating. We ordered some nice nibbles - bread and manchego cheese and if you're looking for something hot, try the piping hot Bitterballens (amazingggg!). Will definitely go back if I am in Amsterdam!

Yelp
Find a brewery and find a good burger. That's kinda how it works and is how it worked here. Sadly, the only complaint I'll register is the 'bar' itself is really shallow and uncomfortable. There's plenty of other seating around, but if you wander in solo for a bite to eat, the bar stools are the logical spot. But people were super friendly so that made up for it. Bring plastic btw, they don't take cash here.

Yelp
Recently had some quick food with a colleague here; he'd come by here more often and told me they had some awesome burgers and beers. That combination of food and beverages always draws my attention, so I was looking forward to coming here. As I already mentioned in my tip, you have to be a bit early or make a reservation to make sure they have a table for you; it can get pretty crowded. Troost looks like a large cafe turned brewery / restaurant, full with locals just coming out of work to enjoy some nice food and drinks together. The service was very punctual and pleasant; the only thing that was a bit tough; where do you leave your jacket? Especially if the place gets fuller in the evening, it gets harder to find a good spot for it. On to the food! They have an excellent selection of foods, and a whole submenu with all different kinds of burgers. They also have a weekly special and a very nicely done burger for vegetarians as well. It's hard to recommend just one.. So I'll say try and go for their weekly special! From a beer perspective, I went with a nice Weizen and it did not disappoint! They have about 10 beers to choose from. As this place offers great atmosphere, good food and even better beers, surely visit Troost so you have a better idea of where 'Amsterdammers' go.

Yelp
Me and my mister went to Troost for a Yelp Burger event. This is a pin-only restaurant! We sampled the Classic and Troostburger, plus the Blonde, Witte and IPA beers. The burgers were served on sesame bun and ciabatta; the latter a trending fad in Amsterdam. The Classic was swimming in Picalilly sauce (what IS that?) and the Troostburger was pretty good (super sloppy). If we go back, I think we'd stick to the Blonde, and sit out in the sun. Great location, friendly staff, but mehh burgers.

Yelp
I'm afraid that I cannot really recommend this place. To their misfortune, I will admit that we did arrive just as they opened. However they opened a large bar with one employee that really became overwhelmed and didn't have the experience for how to manage it. Thus, we waited a long time for even a first beer, and then even longer for some food which was the big reason for going there. The food, when it finally came, was very disappointing. The fish and chips were undercooked, greasy, and very unappetizing. My wife's food could have come out of a machine. The problem is that the place is too busy trying to be hip when it can't even handle the basics. Better training, additional staff, and getting the cook off of the phone would be some good starts. I won't recommend nor return.

Yelp
My hubby and I sat at the bar at Brouwerij Troost. Many of the tables were reserved around 7pm and later, so if you want to eat around then, make a reservation. We were there around 5pm and it was filling very quickly. It seems to be a great place to go after work. We both loved the Tripel, which is a new addition to their list in 2015. We ordered a few apps like Flammkuchen, with spinach and feta. Delicious!

Yelp
Great beer, great food, great service. I had a good time trying several beers-all great. And their version of chicken tacos-awesome. Liked the bass tunes filling the background. Enjoyed the friendly service. It's all good, a little loud indoors, but goes well with a buzz.

Lyshemah L.

Yelp
Best burger I've had ever with a the smoked porter beer. Love this place and I will stop back in if I'm in the area again. Hot drinks can be made but aren't on the menu. Try the Irish coffee on a cold day!

Yelp
Overall: 4.5** Ambiance: 5 Food: 4.5 Beer: 4 Brouweirj Troost de Pijb is located in one of my favorite neighborhoods in Amsterdam. This is a great place to check out if you want to be away from the touristy areas and hang out with the locals. What I love most about this brewpub is that it's intimate yet lively and not too cramped or loud. The lighting is dim, making it intimate enough for a date, and the chattering noises of guests add a nice liveliness to the vibe. As for the beers, I tried the smoked porter and triple which I give a 3.75 and 4 out of 5, respectively. To complement the beers, I got their meat platter that has a mix of sausage and dried meats. They ran out of the jerky so I got the raw ground meat (aka ossenworst?) instead and that is surprisingly delicious. It's soft and mild in flavor. I really like it and recommend you to try it since it is a Dutch classic.

Yelp
This place is great. A local Microbrewery that is located in downtown Amsterdam. The place is very large with indoor and outdoor seating. The atmosphere is casual with a great mixture of music playing. The staff was very friendly. We were unable to make it in time for food so I cannot speak to the kitchen aspect. However, the beer was fantastic. They do a New England IPA that was one of my favorite things I drank during my entire trip. Others in my group really enjoyed the selection of sour beers they had. You always get a true feel for a spot by the crowd and this crowd screamed a cool local spot to hang out. Price points are very reasonable. Definitely stop by for a drink or two or three or four.

Yelp
New breweries are popping up all over the Netherlands, causing some breweries to try and differentiate themselves from the crowd. A prime example of this is Troost, which doubles their brewing locations as restaurants. The one in the Pijp, with its chill ambiance, is located in an old monastery and sports plenty of seating for all party sizes. We started out with their vegetable chips and sriracha dip, which were so good that we had to take care to leave room for the main course. Most options for their main course are burgers, two of which that are vegetarian-friendly (we both had the lentil burger). All burgers are served on tasty, crunchy, freshly baked bread rolls and are generously covered with tasty veggies. To complete everything, we had a serving of both normal and sweet potato fries: an ideal complement. Of course, we enjoyed several beers before and during dinner. The brewery's variety is good enough to enable a steady increase in both taste and alcohol content throughout dinner. They're all of good quality and whether you'll like them will mostly depend on personal preference. (We can recommend their super-smooth lager, sweet weizen and burly barley wine.) In conclusion, Troost's a place of personality to enjoy dinner and beers with a small company. We'll gladly return!

Yelp
Nice, bustling brew pub with the best beer I've had in Amsterdam. Mostly locals and pretty relaxed atmosphere.

Yelp
First of all, I hate the heat. HATE it. And it was hot when we went to Brouwerij Troost, which may have affected my experience a bit (I know it's not fair - it wasn't their fault). But alas, I thought it was just ok. My husband and I both ordered the veggie burger with fries and some beer. The beer was very good. The veggie burger sounded amazing but it just didn't blow me away. It was fine. Would I try it again? Probably not. It was definitely very over-priced.. I would definitely return for the beer though. And maybe all the meat is good so if you're into that...you might like your experience more. The restaurant itself was pretty busy - all the outdoor seats were taken when we arrived (don't forget - it was HOT that day). By the time we left (at about 7:30pm), all the tables were full. And the service was very good.
google avatar

Yura A.

Yelp
And we are back to burgers! I have on purpose sampled all popular burger places in the Pijp. Troost has outdone them all!!! The meat has some amazing mix of herbs and its quality screams taste! For the first time there, I suggest you choose between two: Classic or Troost burger! For the second visit let your mind get blown by the veggie burger!!!! Yeah yeah... It's not meat but trust me - the taste will seduce you! And for the third visit (oh yes... You gonna come more!) Go for the week special, this will nail your taste buds to Troost forever!:) Oh but did I mention it's a brewery with their own beers?... No? Then don't get me started on that subject! The beers they have go 100% perfect with the burgers they make!!! If you are reading this - GO!!! DO NOT HESITATE!
google avatar

Guido D.

Yelp
You should not consider how the place looks... When I got in it reminded me a bit of and old school building. I understood that they have another new place in Amsterdam also which looks a lot nicer. Apart from the looks, the beers that I tried here I liked a lot. Did not try them all (yet), but given the fact I liked the ones I did try, pretty sure I will come back to this place :)
google avatar

Bibi B.

Yelp
What a nice place to spend a Friday evening ! We had a couple beer to taste and a surprising Lamb Burger with fried potatoes to sustain our hunger. Very nice time in this lively and lovely place.

Bob L.

Yelp
Purist Burger: Bun dry. Burger came out rare when I ordered medium, burger tasted slightly game-y. Would not order again. Cole slaw: This slaw recipe tries to be a little funky and it was funky, but not to my taste. Flavor aside, it came out luke warm. Fries were good. **Excellent smoked porter beer. Would come back for that alone. Good atmosphere inside and out. Three stars in my book means "Good" overall. Next time I will try a veggie burger.
google avatar

Gto F.

Yelp
Walked 30mins in the freezing cold only to be told their kitchen was closed AFTER we ordered food. Service was slower than a sloth. Great beer thought!
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
Good food, attentive service, and fantastic beer. We went on a quiet Monday night and I imagine the place is hopping toward the weekend. The tacos were not remotely Mexican but were excellent. Smoked Porter and Witbier both very good.
google avatar

Kesia O.

Yelp
This is a great, classy brewery with an amazing beer selection as well as delicious food. I ended up ordering one of the beer cocktails - hoptimus lime I think it was called - and it was absolutely fabulous. Their weizen and vegan burger were also really great.

C C.

Yelp
Good craft beer. They were able to accommodate my husband and our 6 month old baby and stroller. Staff were very friendly. Would definitely recommend dropping in!
google avatar

Rachel J.

Yelp
Nice vibe, great tunes and great craft beers. Only had the bitterballen but delish. We sat in the back solarium area on an afternoon so it was bright and lots of natural light. We'll be back for sure. Menu looks great.
google avatar

Sam L.

Yelp
Beer, burgers and a nice restaurant to hang out staffed by some very nice people now that's a winning combination. The restaurant has all these hard surfaces making it loud when there's a full house. The tables, at least where I sat, were the tall raised ones with the high stools. I'm not so much of a fan of that design being a short person. The burger I had was just okay. I did like the blonde beer I had. I also liked that the staff did a great job serving the very large group I was with. I don't know if they do take away but I do know they're dog friendly. I'd go back if in the area or invited to return.
google avatar

Tatyana C.

Yelp
I was there with a large group and we had beers and burgers. My "classic" burger was great, as well as the fries. Service was very good: friendly staff and our burgers were all served at the same time! The weizen beer was very good too, but the IPA I wouldn't recommend. Extremely bitter. And I'm a beer drinker, it is not that I'm not used to beer. This is a nice area in Amsterdam, so the crowd is cool and mainly Dutch, no tourists. As someone commented, there are some tall tables and chairs. There are other types of sitting, but we were on the tall ones. The chairs were extremely small and uncomfortable. Just don't sit there. It would also be nice if there were more tables outside. Overall a nice place and I will come back with friends!
google avatar

Alison S.

Yelp
The atmosphere of this brewery and restaurant is fantastic. We went here for some beers and also tried the flammkuchen. Everything was absolutely delicious. I know that if we lived in Amsterdam we would be regulars here.

Caroline H.

Yelp
Very Full, very expensive, very loud. We Had to wait "At the bar" for a table, While even the bar was laid out. The Beer wasnt that good that the very high Prices wouldve been justified. The Burger was way too small for 13,5€ without a side and so dry that it was hard to eat it and it was very very spicy, about that nothing was written in the menu. A conversation with the group is impossible if you don't like to scream. I dont think we'll Ever come back, it was a Bad Start in our Vacation.
google avatar

Jesse B.

Yelp
Great place on a Wednesday eve! It was quite busy, but there were enough tables available. We had the Classic burger with thick, crispy bacon, and tasty meat, straight from the farm in Baambrugge near Amsterdam, and the Troostburger, with blue cheese on top of the burger and with ciabatta bread. If you just want a normal, great burger take the classic one, really delicious. If you like blue cheese and olives, then the Troostburger is an excellent choice. And the fries that go with it...just perfect, crispy pieces combined with fat ones, just the way I like it. And the mayonaise...so tasty I needed more. Moreover: nice and friendly waiters, and a no nonsense, noisy enough atmosphere, for example for low profile, first dates, but also for a group of colleagues to enjoy. Go check it out!
google avatar

Denislava K.

Yelp
Very busy so make sure u bring ur patience with you. It is worth it , though! Great beer and an Angus burger to complement it.
google avatar

Tash H.

Yelp
great place - nice ambiance, friendly staff, drinks are not expensive and they have amazing food too!
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
This was the last stop of a food tour I was on in the Pijp neighborhood. It was hopping around 8PM on a Thursday night. We had beer and bitterballen (Dutch croquettes). Seems like a fun place
google avatar

Barton S.

Yelp
Nice staff, very juicy burger and good beers. Rather unremarkable place otherwise. If I lived in the neighborhood, I'd be a regular. But the other breweries I visited were more interesting places to hang out.
google avatar

Melissa H.

Yelp
I decided to take a walk here for dinner one night during my vacation. I missed it at first and went all the way around the block, so keep you eyes out. The beer was tasty and the atmosphere was relaxed. The staff was friendly. I am not sure if it's just this place or Amsterdam in general, but the burgers are served rare. I don't mind it, but if you want it cooked more, specify as they do not ask how you want it cooked.

zehill A.

Yelp
This place has good beer (the NEIPA is one of the best local beers I've had) and food. Service was great.
google avatar

Lee B.

Yelp
A small, craft brewery in the heart of Amsterdam. Selling only its own beers, which are really special, it also does great food, The choice of burgers is different and the quality is really good. There are veggie options too. Would definitely recommend a visit.
