15 Places to Pay Homage to the King of Rock and Roll

"Founded in 1912, Brown & Haley is a candy company best known for making Almond Roca. The buttercrunch treat, coated in chocolate and crushed almonds, is sold worldwide in its trademark gold-foil wrappers and pink tins. Fans looking to pay their respects at the company’s headquarters, located in an industrial area of Tacoma, should keep an eye out for two things: the company’s vintage pink sign and its unusual outlet store. The round pavilion that houses the store was originally part of the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair. It was even used as Elvis Presley’s “green room” during the on-site filming of It Happened at the World’s Fair. After the fair ended, Brown & Haley purchased the structure and had it moved to Tacoma, where it’s stayed ever since. The store offers samples of Brown & Haley’s candies, including Almond Roca and Mountain Bars. They also sell “factory seconds,” treats deemed unsuitable for retail packaging because of mistakes, such as two pieces bonded together or broken. With the erroneous candies marked at an average one-third of the retail price, most customers happily overlook a few imperfections." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

My husband took a wrong turn and I saw the Almond Roca sign spinning.  It's a small factory outlet.  I honestly didn't know Almond Roca was made here in Tacoma, Washington.  The person who rang me up was telling us that it used to be a boot factory.  The other lady said it became  a chocolate factory in like 1912.  She mentioned they used to make Mars candy bars here as well. They even have a link for a virtual tour.  It was a nice little shopping adventure.   I highly recommend checking it out.

Google
Oh yes! What a fun place to place almond roca, plus a ton of other varieties I have never tried. There is a cinnamon toffee square that I can't get enough of. They were sold as seconds "mistakes" in bags for $1. What a steal.

I finally visited this spot a month ago, which is crazy considering I live just up the hill! You’ll need to press a button to be let in, which feels a bit exclusive. Once inside, the range of options can be a little overwhelming, and because it’s such a tight space, it can feel a bit awkward if you’re the only one there (so, introverts, you’ve been warned). Prices and product availability do vary, but here’s what I grabbed on my visit: Factory Seconds - $1 each Roca Popcorn - $4.95 Mountain Bar - $1.25 each Overall, I'm definitely coming back when I need my Roca fix!

Google
Cute little store that somewhat mimics the shape of the Tacoma Dome nearby. Discovered it by happenstance while parking. We almost missed it because it's adjacent to a rather unassuming factory building like many others, but then lo and behold the oversize revolving Almond Roca tin. Spoiler: large tin facsimile probably contains no actual candy. For that you'll need enter the store: walk up the ramp and be buzzed in. Once inside, you will be warmly greeted and introduced to the specials of the day in this quaint candy store. Many offerings are 30-50% off, and assorted bags of "seconds" are available for a buck a pop. Psst, help yourself to a free sample at the front counter!

Google
This outlet is a small store, always known as "The Pink House", packed with most of the well known Roca candies. Plus factory seconds, gift packages, and new product samples...but not at much of a discount. Wheelchair accessible entrance and parking lot. This round building was originally part of the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair. It was used as Elvis Presley’s “green room” during the filming of It Happened at the World’s Fair.

I went here with my family and I love this place. All the Roca that they had was amazing, and I swear I could have gotten 20 of the Roca Cinnamon Bite mishaps? (I went a while ago and can't remember) They were a dollar, and I highly recommend them. The girls there were so nice and were amazing with their sales. Haha, we probably got more candy than what we wanted (but I say it's worth it) I got a little candy for my best friend here which would have been like 25 cents but the girls there were so nice and just let us have it haha. If you are traveling or are close, find an excuse to go. Because this is such an amazing little store with great people and candy. What more could you ask for? 😉😂

This cute little store is filled with all kinds of almond roca goodness. Located in Tacoma, WA. There is a parking lot with a few spaces. If you love almond roca you need to come here. The factory is just right next door. Can you believe Elvis Presley once visited this store? Totally amazed! There were two sweet ladies working in the store. They were very nice. The store sells other items like sweatshirts, t-shirts, magnets, stickers, post cards, pens and more. It’s really nice to step foot in a place that has been around for years. Also nice to know that a part of history still lives there. The original Almond Roca Factory and gift shop!

Best candy ever! Love the little shop! Our hostess today was fantastic, explaining the different flavors we don't get on the East Coast!

Yelp
Grew up with it, part of my lifetime of sweet joy.... tacoma Washington was my point of contact for this delicious treat

Yelp
I love almond roca. Stopped in here for some great deals. Employees were super helpful and friendly

Yelp
What more can you say but fresh Almond Roca on site. The factory is right here and while they no longer do tours the product speaks for itself. We stop here or at the Fife store for great bargains on their product. They sale factor seconds which is as good as the first quality products. Check in normally come with a free product so make sure to check in. Check hours before you go as it is not open 7 days a week. If closed check the Fife store they are not normally closed on the same days. It's a small store but is quaint and stocked full of value.

Yelp
This tiny outlet is my go to for Christmas gifting. They have all the tasty Roca and chocolate they sell at stores only it's in one place and on sale. They will also sell you items by the case. So you see how handy that is for taking care of co-workers and hungry relatives. A case of Peanut butter Mountain bars and Moms Birthday is done. My friend's Birthday? Case of Sea Salt Almond Roca. And last year was a fluke Sarah. I didn't eat those 2 bags, it was a factory error. I just retaped the box. I got you a sweatshirt to make up for it. Yeesh. Parking lot. This place is cute and tiny so it may be crowded.

Yelp
This is one of a kind. When I was younger my grandmother used to come and get boxes of mistakes for like 5 dollars. They don't have that anymore but the deals are still good enough that you can stuff your face with all kinds of sweet treats. I also would like to give a special shout out to the elderly woman who walked us around the store and the dapper gentlemen who rang us up, we had matching red flannels so that was cool!
google avatar

Vivian T.

Yelp
Excellent selection of candies that is not found elsewhere. Efficient service. Wish there was a factory tour. Quiet ambience little place.

Nadine G.

Yelp
Do not order from their website! They will take your money, but leave your order status as "pending fulfillment". They will not respond to emails or voicemail.

Yelp
The "Almond Roca Store" (officially Brown & Haley) is a great place to stop by whenever in Tacoma. We've been coming here for years with the kids and back pre-COVID when they had samples still on the counter, etc. We still come by when in the area and always walk out of there with a cardboard box of tasty treats. The workers there are very nice and although the place is small, there's a lot of items packed in there. They have a variety and some standard items as well. Always something good to buy. Drop by and visit, just like Elvis did once!
google avatar

Darrell R.

Yelp
Wonderful confections! Been enjoying Mountain bars and Almond Roca since I was a child.
google avatar

Anthony C.

Yelp
Stop by and shop around the gift shop. There are no factory tours here. Enjoy heavily discounted items! There are many good deals on almond roca, etc. I grabbed a bag of very tasty "chocolate crunch" for 50cents per bag. There are plenty of samples in this small store. They even have deals on surplus sometimes. While we were there, they had a deal where spending $30 got you a box of chocolate covered raspberry topping.
google avatar

Rebecca P.

Yelp
Great little "store" (with the emphasis on "little") to buy some local sweets while in Tacoma. Grab up some discounted bags of imperfect pieces, buy tons of super yummy peanut butter Mountain Bars, sample all the many samples at the front, and then go into a sugar coma. Bottom line: Yum for a discount? Why wouldn't I? Yeah, yeah, zits and waistline. I'm working on being an adult - but getting a good deal on my vices is adulting, too. So there.

Yelp
So much deliciousness packed into a small store!! The factory next door is the only one in the world making Almond Roca. Sadly, they don't give tours of the factory anymore. But the rock-bottom prices for *toffee heaven* make this little place worth a stop. Their toffee varieties include cashew, peppermint, peanut, macadamia, and of course the traditional almond in dark and milk chocolate. The little peppermint patty copycats have a wonderfully strong peppermint flavor and are softer than a York. They also sell yummy caramels and fruit candy made by other local companies. The shortbread cookies are the size of a quarter and don't have the texture of a traditional shortbread, and taste a LOT sweeter. But that's thanks to the toffee. Caramel popcorn- confession time. I buy gourmet popcorn wherever I travel; it's kinda my weakness. I'm pretty picky...and was pleasantly surprised that the Almond Roca caramel corn is fabulous! They actually use real butter.
google avatar

Sienne E.

Yelp
Small store. A little sad that you can't do the tours, but it's still nice to stop in and get some discounted chocolate. Staff is super friendly. Great place to visit if you love Almond Roca.

Yelp
Address is incorrect - make sure you go to the corner of 26TH STREET & A STREET ... small round storefront next to the factory If you love Roca this is a must stop!!! Everything is fresh & cheap. When you first walk in there is a deal wall where everything is $1 or less :) But even the regular priced stuff is way less than store price! I spent $30 and they gave me A WHOLE BOX of cherry mountain bars FREE!!! What a nice surprise! They are up to 7 different Roca flavors & all of them are sold here. Good stuff. Since it is right off the 5 fwy I usually try to stop here when traveling between Seattle and Olympia YUM YUM YUM
google avatar

Yelp
This is a an old favorite for our family! Such nostalgia when entering this candy haven! We love almond roca and of course the kids like the Mountain bars, always a must to buy their soft caramels. The location in Fife is also a treat, but we prefer the original.

Marcus J.

Yelp
Love it....very knowledgeable staff. Not only do they know about their products but also the company history.

Yelp
Almond Roca and Brown & Haley is a Tacoma institution... absolutely no doubt about that at all. But the Brown & Haley version of it I'm kind of on the fence on. If you go to their little shop right by the factory that sells the candy and buy Almond Roca there and eat it right away it isn't bad. A little harder than I prefer it to be. It's relatively fresh but seems to lose that aspect relatively quickly. Probably the best use for this version of Almond Roca is to use it in cooking recipes. The desserts that I have had in the past involving it seem to be very enjoyable. Probably what I like most of all is other people's or other companies interpretations of the Almond Roca recipe. For example their is a bakery just right up the street that makes an Almond Roca cupcake that is to die for! Celebrity Cake Studio is the name of the place. I'm not sure if they have that cupcake on hand all of the time but they were very masterful in the spirit of Almond Roca. Another version of Almond Roca that I highly enjoyed was just from a homemade recipe that someone made at my work for the holidays. Yes, the candy was hard in this instance as well but not verging on rock hard. More on the "crunch" side of things and very, very fresh.... even after a few days. But these versions which I seem to like better thus far would not exist if it wasn't for Brown & Haley.

Yelp
Staying at the Courtyard Marriott and took the light rail right outside the hotel from convention center to the S 25th stop. When you get to the stop exit the car, turn left then right up the weird looking incline ..You will see it. We don't have public transportation where I'm from so I get easily lost. Please don't sample everything or your head will hurt like mine does. Cheap prices..promotion was free case of mountain bars if you spend more than $30
google avatar

Kay M.

Yelp
Today was our family's third generation that visited this historical spot. Brought my 4 and 9 year old Grand-kids here and they couldn't believe all the candy surrounding them in this small little circular shop. The ladies working behind the counter were so sweet in offering samples and telling them the history of the factory.
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
Always a joy. Nothing wrong with candy wrappers not perfect or a little mis-shapened candy as the deductible taste never changes. Can't best the prices for a classic brand.
google avatar

Andy W.

Yelp
A Pacific Northwest institution. We ordered a variety of Brown & Haley candy to be sent to Minnesota for the holiday season, because they remind us of home where I grew up. Excellent customer service!
google avatar

Yelp
I grew up in Gig Harbor, WA and moved away down south a long while ago. However, all my family is still there between Gig Harbor and Tacoma. Every time I return home to visit, Brown & Haley is a must stop for Almond Roca mis-wraps. Now, granted, Almond Roca candies can be found just about anywhere in the United States. So I can always get that fix. But at a fraction of the cost? Nope. So I load up. Furthermore, Mountain Bars. ...Now those are harder to find outside of the PNW. Down here in Los Angeles where I've been living, I can only find them at a boutique candy shop called "Rocket Fizz" (seriously, if you're ever down in LA, check any one of their locations out if you're into hard to find, nostalgic candies and/or sodas). Now, Rocket Fizz is kind of a destination store that sells only sugary treats. I'm not one to regularly go out candy shopping. I'm the kind of guy that grabs something while waiting in the checkout line at the grocery store. But even then, my memories as a child involved going to little country stores (eg: Arletta Store, Island View Store, Templeman's, Finholm's - Gig Harborites know what I'm talking about), and Mountain Bars were a staple. They will always have a special place in my heart, thus me loading up. So every time I return to the great PNW, I'm found at least once st the Brown & Haley candy shop, making small talk with the staff and loading up their delicious candies to pack in my suitcase for the trip back to Los Angeles. Thanks for all it is you do! I'll see you all again soon enough.

Yelp
Fun little shop to grab one or four pieces or bags of their famous treats! The factory seconds are a great buy! Or favorite is the dark chocolate with sea salt Almond Roca!
google avatar

Nathan S.

Yelp
One of the best local secrets in Washington, Brown & Haley has always reminded me of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It holds a special place in my heart, because I have been going to Brown & Haley since I was very young. The prices are reasonable and their chocolate is delicious. There is nothing more to say. It's such a cool place and I feel fortunate that it is within driving distance.
google avatar

Tyler S.

Yelp
Wait a minute....an entire store full of brown & haley candy YES PLEASE!!!! I walked in in total amazement of my surroundings. Almond roca, mountain bars, chocolate, bark, the list goes on & on and all for a discounted price. There was such a random assortment of all types that it's almost overwhelming. Don't get me wrong the place really isn't all that big it's just packed from wall to wall with product. The best deal I saw were the bags of "oopsies" that were on a shelf. 3-bags of their product for $9.99.....what a deal. The staff inside is just as inviting and are more than happy to answer any questions you have about the product or the history of the factory. The only unfortunate part of the experience is that they don't do factory tours. Also don't forget to grab your free sample as they are right there when you walk through the door.
google avatar

Nick C.

Yelp
HECK YEAH!!! This place is as good as it gets! Although this place is just a small cylindrical shop, you can easily spend more than 30 minutes in there becoming a child once more. They have samples of all their products even if you don't see it out, just ask them. Their deals are steals as well. You can get a whole tray of rejects for as low a $0.50. There was also like a 2 pound case of non-rejects for $10. Some of the flavors they have include mocha, cashew, macadamia, dark chocolate, and dark chocolate with peppermint. I walked into the store looking for chocolate but found my inner child instead. You should go.
google avatar

Michelle D.

Yelp
The Brown & Haley Factory Store is amazing! Almond Roca, Macadamia Roca, Mocha Roca, Peppermint Roca and so much more at discounted prices ...... yes, please! I grabbed 2 adorably pink Roca tote bags ($1.99 each, I believe) and filled them up. Altogether, I only spent $20! Most of the candy is factory seconds - slightly misshaped or improperly wrapped candy. 12 ounce packages are only $2.50! There is also a large selection sugar-free candy available. Macadamia Roca ...... I did not know there was such a thing! It is my new favorite. There are plenty of free samples at the counter and the employees are so nice and helpful! This is also where you can find Roca merchandise, such as hats and pins. There are large bags of Roca bits which were nearly free. Roca bits are excellent for baking and so incredible on top of tiramisu! In addition to factory seconds, there are products in lovely pink packaging as in retail stores, which cost less than retail prices. One of these products is the Almond Roca Buttercrunch Cookie Bar Mix, which I have never seen before. So much fabulousness. I was born and raised in Washington and had no idea, until recently, that Almond Roca has been made in Tacoma (and only Tacoma) for over 100 years! Yes, it's true - Tacoma has a beautiful, little, pink gem and it's name is Brown & Haley. I was truly a kid in a candy store. This place is worth making a stop if you are nearby, along with the Almond Roca Gift Shop which is only 3 miles away from the factory store. I recommend visiting both stores.
google avatar

Lyn P.

Yelp
Super great deals to be had here. Any type of Almond Roca package for super cheap, plus Cashew Roca, Mocha Roca and all the other products made by Brown & Haley. No tours at this location but the kitsch and the deals are worth it for fans of this chocolate.
google avatar

Tim S.

Yelp
My wifes grandmother worked here back in the day (1939). Must be nice to work at a candy store ;-). This is the 100 year anniversary of this candy shop. We stopped by and grabbed some. They give you a ton of free samples and candy is dirt cheap. We got a box of Almond Roca and a bag of miswraps Macadamia Roca all for 6 bucks. This shop is real tiny but they have all you need. Way cheaper here than in the stores. All the kinds we tried were delicious! Definitely stop by and grab some if you can. Some bags/boxes are only $0.99. Can't beat that!
google avatar

Brian U.

Yelp
Reduced reject Rocas fresh from the factory. Small select samples in the corner chalet. Second shop shortly off the freeway in Fife (see https://www.yelp.com/biz/brown-and-haley-almond-roca-gift-shop-fife-2).
google avatar

Jaymee M.

Yelp
This place is a little slice of heaven dropped in Tacoma. I picked up a good sized package of Almond, mocha and peppermint Roca for like $4.00! They are unwrapped "rejects". My mouth is sure not rejecting them. They have regular packaged ones here as well for gifts and what not. They are like $10 which is still cheaper than you would pay at like Bartell's. The women working was very friendly and encouraged samples. one does not simply got to Tacoma and not go here.
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
I have always loved this candy. So good and inexpensive to get from here. I had no idea it was made in Washington. Cute little store that was apart of the world fair.
google avatar

David O.

Yelp
Got a sweet tooth? Like better then average chocolates...? Like reasonable pricing on confections..not over the top silliness.. then this is a "go to"place. Staff were nice and helpful. Kinda small...but a nice niche. Many choices for all sweet tooth tastes... enjoy
google avatar

Renee S.

Yelp
5 stars for PRICE. They sell slightly irregular, overstock, and some almost expired, etc. and the prices are incredibly low. I don't recommend the consumption of candy in massive quantities, but its a nice place to stop by and get some gift boxes of their chocolates for waaaay less than store prices as well as a small sack of misfit pieces for $1. They always have samples out at the register. It's a fun stop for kids as it's in a "cute" small circular building next to the building where they've made their chocolates since the 20's. If you go to the Tacoma Dome or downtown Tacoma's museum's, you should look up their house and plan to stop in. You will leave with chocolate, I warn you. They also have a larger candy store in Fife which is also just off I-5.
google avatar

Joseph S.

Yelp
Although it's a bummer they don't offer factory tours this tiny shop is well worth a visit and much nicer than their larger store in Fife (did I spell that right?). The building itself dates from the Seattle World's Fair and there's a plaque mentioning Elvis was in the building back in the day so visiting here is practically educational! The people at the store are super friendly and incredibly generous with samples! They had pretty much every thing in the store on offer and were handing out full size pieces of the various Rocas. They almost always have great deals for instance when we were there 8 ounce nicely packaged boxes of dark chocolate toffee Rocca were only $1.75 each!
google avatar

Jarenn N.

Yelp
Amazing deals on a variety of Almond Rocha products and more! They have free covered parking so pull right up, step into the store, try some samples and fill up your basket! I love their dark chocolate Almond Rocha and their Almond Rocha flavored Pop brand popcorn! Service there is always great and they often have perks like spend $25 get a tote bag free!
google avatar

Kristy M.

Yelp
Wow...what a bargain on amazing candy! Rejected pieces from stores taste the same to me as the perfectly shaped pieces, and getting them at amazing prices makes it taste all the sweeter! Plenty of free parking in the lot if you just look for it. :) And the free samples are full-size! Where pink on Tuesdays for an extra discount. Yum!

Ana G.

Yelp
Almond Roca outlet store! There's a kiosk in front of the factory that sells imperfect pieces cheap. I bought an 8oz. bag of almond roca for $2.50! They also have a store in Fife. Love it!

David C.

Yelp
I grew up in Puyallup and remember driving by the factory and smelling the confections. After moving to California, I finally returned recently expecting the factory to be closed down or the company to be owned by someone else. Much to my surprise and joy, it's still there! We visited the small store/kiosk (supposedly Elvis' dressing room during the Seattle World's Fair) and left with $75 worth of candy. I love it! I just read some of the other reviews. Our service was fantastic. The workers offered samples and told us the story of the company and where the kiosk came from. EXCELLENT customer experience.
google avatar

Kari S.

Yelp
MMMMMMMMMM ALMOND ROCA & MOUNTAIN BARS! I love the candy shop at the Brown & Haley plant! Inexpensive fine chocolate. I like to buy the factory reject Almond Roca, it tastes just as good and you don't have to spend precious time unwrapping it before sinking your teeth into some crunchy toffee. Parking is easy, so definitely pay them a visit. Lots of free samples too.
google avatar

Douglas K.

Yelp
So cool if you are a candy lover!! The outlet in front of the factory has a huge selection of factory seconds which are extremely cheap....and extremely good! Kinda in an odd spot but ride the free light rail and there is a stop just a block and a half away.
google avatar

Kim P.

Yelp
Almond Roca heaven this place it!!! My daughter wanted some Almond Roca in her stocking this year and unfortunately I didn't get to fulfill that wish so the following weekend I made it up to her and took her here on a whim and she was in LOVE!!! Mouth dropped and all giddy and smiles.... Walking in she gravitated to the largest Pink tin can and hugged it:) I had to laugh and let her know that this is a store full of ALMOND ROCA...... Luckily we walked in before the crowd of others came and the lady behind the counter was super helpful explaining the factory seconds and different flavors, offering samples as well:) Needless to say we got the orignal Almond Roca, Cashew Roca and the Candy Cane Roca!!! We will be back in a few.....
google avatar

Drea L.

Yelp
This is a small place located next to the Brown & Haley manufacturer which apparently has been around for 99 years according to the cashier who helped me that day! I've been to Tacoma a number of times, but it was only through Yelp did I find this little jem. For those craving Almond/Cashew/Mocha/Macadamia Roca at an incredible price, definitely stop by to fulfill your sweet tooth. The prices are very reasonable. In addition to normal packages which you can get as gifts, they also have "boo boos" or "mishaps" which are the same type of candy but weren't wrapped properly or broken candy that are sold at a deeply discounted price! Even though it is a small shop, there are still plenty of options to choose from.
google avatar

Julie S.

Yelp
I have to show some LOVE for a Tacoma-born chocolate factory. The store is a small stand alone circular building; I don't go out of my way to go here. But if I happen to be passing by en route somewhere else - I'll stop by for a quick deal :) They even sell holiday appropriate chocolates. But of course, the best deal is after the holiday - namely valentine's. P.S. Even better deals if you don't mind mis-shapen rejects that didn't make it to the store shelf. Satisfy your almond roca craving at a fraction of the cost. :)

Jami K.

Yelp
Wow, what an amazing place. I've lived here almost all of my life and this past weekend marked my first visit to this great place. I'd given my boyfriend Mountain Bars before and he loved it. I mentioned that their factory was in Tacoma. He joked about getting "mistake" mountain bars....saying that they'd probably look beautiful instead of like lumps of dog doo. Well I did get some mistake mountain bars and I honestly think that they are better than the real thing....alas, I think that this place is the only place to get them. I'm not really sure if I like Almond Roca all that much, but it's definitely a good treat to bring out of towners...very much a regional candy. This is the place to get it too. It's way cheaper than in the stores. The best thing about this place is getting massive quantities of miswrapped, mismade or discontinued candy. I got about 4 pounds of candy here for $10. It's amazing! The staff is friendly and was very happy to point out the better deals and offer samples to make sure you like everything you buy---even if you're only going to spend $3. Definitely check this place out.

Yelp
Love Love Love Almond Roca !! This little retail kiosk isn't so little! Every possible type of Roca- even types i'd never heard of before! Every product made by Brown & Haley! AMAZING discounts! Clerk helped us to shop the best deals, and gave out fabulous samples- which just made me buy more! Here's what they don't advertise: They even carry Brown and Haley souvenirs! Pink Roca hoodies, black t shirts, pens, etc! You HAVE to come here if Roca ever meant anything to you!

Yelp
How could I drive by here a million times over years and never stop in!? Fantastic deals on delicious sweets-plus, the gentleman who helped us was absolutely delightful! Don't drive by here again without at least a quick look and a delicious sample!

Yelp
12 ounce, sealed plastic trays of factory seconds are from .99 to 5.99 (no sales tax). My favorite Dark Rocha is $3.33 for 12 ounces - more than half the regular retail price so a great bargain. There are free samples at the counter if you want to try before buying. Before you make the drive - the factory seconds are the only discount here - everything else is the same price as you would find at most retail stores. Angled parking on the side street, or pull into the front lot on 26th street and park under the breeze way. Very patient and helpful lady at the counter. This was my first time back in this shop for 50 years. Don't know why I waited so long.
