15 Best Hikes in Los Angeles, From Malibu to Mount Baldy | Condé Nast Traveler

"The eight mile out-and-back Brown Mountain Dam Waterfall hike is moderately strenuous, but the trek through the foothills of San Gabriel gives as much as it takes. Scamper past the tranquil Paul Little Memorial and Gould Mesa Trail Camp, the nexus of which is a great place to rest and refuel, and start on the Gabrielino Trail near the Arroyo Seco. Shortly thereafter, the trail will spit you out at Brown Mountain Dam, where the cascading falls plunge into a calm pool filled with (slippery) mossy concrete below the dam. Because of the trail's rollercoaster-esque ups and downs and sporadic rocky outcroppings, the hike is suitable for hikers who are looking for moderate distance and mixed terrain; it's good to pencil in at least three hours for it." - Maxwell Williams

The hike to the waterfall is relatively easy and offers plenty of shaded areas along the way. Despite the temperature being 84 degrees during our hike, we found it comfortable and didn't feel overheated. Be prepared to cross a few small streams, which means your shoes may get wet. Overall, it's a beautiful trail, and it’s likely to be even more picturesque in the fall!

This waterfall is one of the nicer ones in the Angeles Forest even though it’s artificial, and is easy to access, only requiring a 8 mile easy hike from the Gabrielino Trail, which is shaded and passes by many rest areas.

7/4/2024: The water flowing over the dam is gorgeous. The river is full and beautiful. Crossed multiple creeks crossing to knee height is some places. Water was cold and refreshing. Worth the wet socks and shoes. Trail passes through a campsite with picnic tables and the bathroom. Watch out the mountain bikers. Well maintained trail. Recommend waterproof/hiking shoes and hiking poles to stabilize if needed.

This isn't a difficult hike but definitely worth it . It's about 8 - 9 miles round trip. Definitely needs to be done in the morning before the heat. We started at about 1:30 pm, but we did get a fairly good amount of shade. There's one location at the campsite with a bathroom. There's poison oak all around, however it has been well maintained and kept away from the paths. But still be careful. Trekking poles are not necessary but snacks and water are recommended. You might want to wear waterproof shoes there's plenty of streams to cross that will take you to the waterfall. The highlight of the hike was reaching the waterfall. The location was shady and although it was a toasty afternoon, we were able to cool down. Although we saw many hikers, the waterfall area wasn't crowded at all so we were able to take pictures and rest for a while. If you like waterfalls, add this hike to your list. Enjoy your hike.

Great hike! Short and sweet and fairly flat! You cross the stream about 7/8 times before you get to the dam so expect to get a tiny bit wet. I went early in the morning during the week, lots of shade, hardly anyone there. At times there can be lots of mountain bikers👎. Clean, beautiful trail🙏

Awesome hike! For the most part, fairly flat. Beautiful trail surrounded by many trees, creating plenty of shade in the summer. With the recent rains, waterfall is thundering and looking gorgeous!! Be prepared to get your feet wet. Crossed about 10 streams. Trail is along the beautiful creek and small waterfalls. Many bridges to cross, and there’s also a campground. The only restrooms available was midway’s at the campground. Plenty of parking available at the trailhead. Bring plenty of water.

THE TRAIL IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED! The first trail river cross got washed up due to the rain. The river current is very strong. However, the last time I was there, I had a great time exploring this beautiful trail. The scenery of this hike is spectacular. We parked at the Windsor Ave parking lot, and from there, we hiked for 3 hours and 30 mins, out and back. It was an 8.8-mile hike. I would rate this hike easy. There are, however, a few creeks that you do have to cross, and you will walk on bridges. Overall, it was a beautiful trail to explore the Angeles Forest. And you will have a few friendly feathery friends singing their hearts out.
