A Diner Turned Drive-In in Queens | The New Yorker

"I noted that the Brownstone Pancake Factory in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, is currently offering carhop service and uses trays that hook onto open car windows, which the Bel Aire is considering as a less complicated alternative to roller-skating servers." - Hannah Goldfield

The menu reads like a dissertation! Our party had to repeatedly ask our server (who was incredibly patient with us - thank you, Chastity!) for more time as we pored over the many, many tasty options listed on each laminated page. The restaurant might be named after its pancakes, but its offerings are closer to a diner-like variety, including some pasta, sandwich, and protein-centric options that would be fine for a lunch or dinner meal. On a Friday morning, service was quick and attentive. I couldn't believe how quickly our plates were delivered to our table, especially considering the size of the restaurant and the surprisingly large serving sizes. To wit, none of us were able to finish our whole orders. Customizations were readily made and carried out to a tee. One of us wanted to switch out one ingredient for another in an omelette, another preferred the dish without onions, and we all got what we wanted. Things were pretty mellow when I visited, but I've heard this restaurant gets absolutely packed on the weekends. The food itself was...fine. Nothing blew us away, but aside from some slightly over-salted potatoes, everything was decently cooked. That said, we watched with gaping mouths at some of the more dessert-like options that passed by us to other tables. There were cotton-candy structures that looked like unicorns, pancake towers carrying clouds of whipped cream, and milkshakes that gave me a sugar high just looking at it. So while our own meals might have been on the boring side, I'm sure those who are daring enough (and with more forgiving metabolisms than I) might rave about their meals here. There's a small parking lot right by the restaurant, and an even larger one when you pull further into the lot.

Everything was excellent! The food was delicious, the portions were generous, and the service was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is fun and welcoming — definitely a place I’d recommend and look forward to visiting again and again...its our 10 times in 5 years!!

My recent visit to Brownstone Pancake Factory was absolutely worth the wait! From the moment we walked in, the service was warm and welcoming you could tell the staff genuinely cared. The food? To die for. Every dish tasted like it was made with love and attention to detail. You can really feel the difference. We did wait about 45 minutes to be seated, but once we were in, everything ran smoothly. Even finding parking took around 10 minutes since the lot is a bit tight but again, completely worth the hassle. If you’re looking for a spot where both the food and service shine, this is it. Highly recommend!

A Must-Visit Gem with Impeccable Service and Delicious Food! Wow! This brownstone cafe is an absolute gem that consistently delivers an amazing experience. From the moment you step inside, you're greeted with a fun, friendly, and buzzing atmosphere. The service is always impeccable. A special shout-out to Lorena, who is a wonderful lady and a truly great server – attentive, friendly, and incredibly helpful on every visit. But the real star of the show is, without a doubt, the food. We've enjoyed many items from their extensive menu over multiple visits, and our family has always loved every dish. The pancakes are truly something special – light, fluffy, almost cake-like in texture, and incredibly moist. If you're a burger fan, the beef burger with sweet potato fries is a must-try; it's flavorful, juicy, and absolutely amazing! Be prepared for the portions – they are consistently massive! If you're looking for a fantastic breakfast or brunch spot with delicious food and great service, look no further. This place is a definite must-try!

My first time! I was excited, as I heard so many good things about this restaurant. I ordered the short rib burger. It read like a MUST HAVE on the menu. The burger arrived, and I was super excited to DIVE in only to have been met with disappointment. The burger was just a burger; a Tasteless piece of frozen meat with a chunk of short rib on top. The short rib was OK. Some parts of it was tender and some parts of it was tough.. The combination of a not so tasty burger with a chunk of short rib on top simply does not work!!!! I recommend a better quality burger be used. I then ordered a Philly cheesesteak. It was horrible. It was not steak. It tasted like burger meat. I opened the sandwich and no way was that a Philly cheesesteak. My appetizer was mozzarella cheesesticks. They were overcooked. Julie, the waitress offered to take them back to the kitchen, but since they tasted OK, I kept them. The mgr tried to make it right by offering a discount as he refused to take the entire item off the bill and offered a free dessert. My husband’s pancakes egg and sausages were wonderful. I will probably go back and try it one more time. The pic is of Philly cheese steak.

We recently stopped by this place for brunch, and I have to admit, our choices might not have been the best. We ordered grits, bacon, corned beef hash, apple pancakes, and some jalapeño poppers. Let’s start with the grits—they were honestly the worst I’ve ever had. They tasted like plain water and were incredibly bland, which was a huge letdown. Next up was the corned beef hash, and it had a strange flavor that I couldn't quite put my finger on. It left me feeling pretty disappointed as well. On a brighter note, the jalapeño poppers were absolutely delicious, and the coffee was great, too! I can’t say enough about the staff, though. They were wonderful—kind, professional, and really patient with us. The restaurant itself had a lovely atmosphere, vibrant and inviting, and I noticed that the dishes that came out of the kitchen looked like works of art. Maybe we just picked the wrong items, but overall, the taste of the food didn’t quite hit the mark for us. Doing think we’ll be coming back.

I have to give the a 10/10, everyone was amazing, you can tell the staff worked together as if it were a family operation. Destiny made our Sunday which was delicious, she was the sweetest person, I admired how she put together my milkshake and held the most pleasant conversation and upbeat attitude. We try to come here a couple of times a year, tonight, was definitely one of my favorite nights. A definite must try. Also, order the chicken and bacon sliders! Special shoutout to Kevin who was also our server and kindly told me when the milkshake was going to be made so I can see all the real time creation happening, so cool.

We arrived around 8:30. We were seated immediately, and the hostess and the waiter were great. Clean and well lit restaurant. The busboys/ men were great and very friendly. The bathroom that I used was very clean. Plenty of parking. The food was great ; nice presentation and delicious. The fries are excellent ! Our group had pancakes and omelet and tea , and all tasted great. The restaurant got very busy as the morning progressed. I’m very happy that I got there early. By the time we left , the parking lot was packed. There was a line of cars waiting for spots to open up. Very popular restaurant and worth the wait.
