On the Grid : Brownwood Park

"Atlanta is a city set amongst the Southern wild, and on a stroll through Brownwood Park, you would have little idea you were in the Southeast’s largest metropolis. The park’s southern half—from Pendleton Street down to Ormewood Ave—follows Intrenchment Creek through a quiet, high-canopied forest. The shaded, wood-chip lined path is popular among dog walkers and couples seeking a bit of seclusion from the city’s bustle. The park’s northern half focuses on community recreation. Here you’ll find basketball and tennis courts, a playground, a picnic pavilion, the headquarters of the East Atlanta Kids Club, and the idyllic community garden." - Treebird Branding

On the Grid : Brownwood Park Community Garden

"Founded in 2006, the Brownwood Park Community Garden helped usher Atlanta into the urban gardening movement. And having more than doubled in size since its inception, the garden continues to grow to meet East Atlanta’s fervor for cultivating and harvesting fresh, organic food. On a typical summer day you can find okra, peas, peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, corn, beans, grapes, strawberries, wild flowers, and more throughout the garden’s public and private plots. Cared for by a dedicated staff of community volunteers, the garden is a living testament to East Atlanta’s sustainable, ecologically mindful future." - Treebird Branding

Great place to go with your kids, teenagers or the whole family. They have tennis and basketball courts, plenty of seats in shaded areas. The playground is fairly new for both small and bigger kids to enjoy. The only "problem" with this park is that the barbecue area has a strong urine smell and often there will be a lot of people sleeping there.

A great neighborhood park for the young families. The playground offers lots of room for kids to explore and exercise. There was a reserved birthday party going on by the picnic tables and an attendant even offered the rest of us a chance to use the restroom before locking up.

I’ve been out here a few times for a stroll and a game of tennis. Usually I end up hitting the ball over the fence into that drain thingy they got over there. Maybe that’s why it’s roped off with caution tape now. Too many kids trying to get their balls back and falling in is my guess. The nature trail on the south end of the park is really nice. It’s got a small creek running through that’s only slightly tinted grey. I found a pretty flower on a bench during one of my walks. That was nice.

Google
A nice park with very little parking and no accessible bathrooms. There is a great playground that my kiddo and friends enjoyed quite well. There is a very large pavilion with solid concrete tables that is great for events. There are also some of those cute permanent chess tables. There are concrete paths that provide some level of ADA access.

Overall a nice park. Should be even better once construction is finished.

They redid the kids play area this past year so it’s really great.

Yelp
I have a toddler and love to go to playgrounds. This one has smokers around 10am and today I saw a man peeing at the park. I decided to leave when I saw the smokers coming to avoid us contact to second hand smoke, the peeing was an unpleasant surprise. The bridge on the playground is about to collapse and it's been like this for at least a couple of weeks now. I hope this improves since this community benefits from this park.

Yelp
Brownwood is a cute park that is normally pretty empty. The space is small enough that it's easy to watch children, but there is still a nice variety of activities. The pavilion and benches provide a nice space for small groups to gather. There is also a nice amount of shade which is nice during Atlanta's hot, summer months.

Yelp
Brownwood Park seems like a forgotten park in many ways, it's usually very peaceful and quiet when I go there. It's a block off of Moreland Avenue, but you wouldn't know it. It's a great spot to walk your dog or go for a run. The tennis courts are in really good shape for a public park, and the kids playground area is pretty new as well. The basketball courts aren't bad, and they aren't too crowded. In fact, I can't remember seeing anyone on the tennis court (so it's turned into a street hockey court for me sometimes). There's also a little community garden in the park.

Yelp
As Drew W. said, Brownwood is definitely a nice park that is off the beaten path. Unless you live in the EAV area, chances are that you don't even know that it exists. It is well taken care of and the playground areas are nice and new. The only draw-back to Brownwood is its size - I would say it is only covers about 2 blocks. If you want to go for a walk around the park or a nice leisurely jog then head over to Grant Park, but if you want to play basketball, tennis, or just relax a little then give BP a shot. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Yelp
Well, Brownwood park is one of the better green spaces in the Atlanta area that isn't overcrowded with people when it is nice outside. New events are being held here (EAV Beer Festival being the most recent I attended) and the park is constantly adding in small improvements. There is a covered picnic area in the center, a kids community center, two tennis courts, a basketball court, open green space and some walking trails. The park is a bit on the smaller side compared to Piedmont, but it is definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
Cute little neighborhood park right off of Moreland and close to EAV. There is an area for kids to play with slides and swings. I saw picnic benches for dining and a good amount of grassy areas. I also spied walking trails here. It's quiet and clean; a good spot to chill on a warm day. I never even knew this park was here until Kathleen and Vanessa invited me to an event here. I like it!

Yelp
Great little park bocce ball, basketball, tennis, and playground for the kiddos. City of Atlanta left this park for dead but some caring souls from the EAV community brought it back by taking up donations for the community center and kids club. Now after all their hard work city of Atlanta now wants this park back big surprise.

Yelp
This is a great little park just a few blocks south of EAV that has about 10 parking spaces and is never crowded (or too sketchy).

Yelp
Best kept secret in ATL! Brownwood park has a great playground, lots of green space, trails and a beautiful wooded area. I've never felt unsafe here and we always meet other kids to play with and mingle with on the weekends. Lovely sense of community and plenty of shade for spending the afternoon lounging with the kiddo.
