Bubba's is one of those true gems. Genuinely great food, excellent service, good prices, and an overall lovely vibe. Even the bathrooms were lovely. If you're in need of a meal and either passing through the area or visiting nearby Mesa Verde National Park, you'll thank yourself for stopping at Bubba's.
It's clear they take genuine pride in their food. Everyone was happy. They have a diverse menu with options to suit everyone. I had the pulled pork sandwich, my husband had the prime rib sandwich special, and my stepson had the Reuben. We also shared a piece of their freshly baked blueberry pie a la mode, which was awesome. I should also note that the fries -- which at some diners are an afterthought, a throwaway add-on -- were roundly beloved by our crew. Thin, fresh, a little crispy, and salted just right, they made me wish that fries could always be exactly like these.
Our waitress couldn't have been nicer. She was precisely the right amount of attentive, and we never lacked anything.
When my husband was at the neighboring gas station, a local had asked him, "But why are you here, if you're headed to Mesa Verde?" The implication being that -- since Mesa was only a little further down the road -- he honestly couldn't understand why we'd bother to stop in their microscopic town. At the time, my husband's answer was that we needed gas and figured we may as well stop for lunch. Turns out, it was to give Bubba's a chance to do for us what it's probably been doing ably for years: show us what a real American small-town diner experience SHOULD be.
