On the Grid : Atlanta-Fulton Public Library - Buckhead Branch

"Built in 1989, the provocative, slate-clad 22,000-square-foot Buckhead branch of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System was utterly cool for its time, and, now, looking back on it, an obvious design classic. Designed by legendary Atlanta-based architects Mack Scogin and Merrill Elam, the structure attracted a riot of midlife attention in 2008 when a local developer proposed demolishing it to make way for an outdoor mall. Dropping into the ensuing fray like a caricature of a good old boy politician, Fulton County Commissioner Tom Lowe seized the opportunity to offer this sparkling piece of architectural analysis: "That library, to my way of thinking, was an abortion the day it was dedicated. I am a lover of art. I can even stand abstract art. But God darn, who in the world would build something like that? There ain't no damn artistic value to that library." Ultimately, the activities of an impassioned group of preservation-minded residents saved the library from destruction (the signed petition from an international coalition of recent Pritzker Prize winners probably didn't hurt the cause). Unimpressed with deconstructivist porte cocheres and colonnades? Make your way through the stacks toward the back of the building: the massive rear window commands a spectacular view of downtown Atlanta and remains a wonderful perch for taking it all in, air-conditioned and detached." - Office of Brothers

I had an amazing day during my library visit in Buckhead! Wide and very organized selection of books. Clean & quiet spaces, with lots of seating options. Definitely recommending this to students, bookworms, and families!

I absolutely love this library! It’s clean, airy, and beautifully quiet. The perfect atmosphere for reading or studying. The desks come equipped with power outlets, and there are plenty of cozy spots by the windows with lots of natural light. The security is excellent, which makes it feel safe and welcoming. With a fantastic selection of books and the added bonus of easy online borrowing, this library truly sets the standard. Highly recommend!

My experience at this library has been truly wonderful. Whenever I have free time, I love visiting to read a book or enjoy the puzzle games. They also offer free activities, and I had the chance to participate in a craft workshop. The space is bright, spacious, and incredibly relaxing. The staff is kind and always helpful. I highly recommend this place!

This is a very nice neighborhood library. What I like most about it is that there is one whole side of the building that has essentially floor to ceiling windows. So you'll get lots of natural light. There are lots of books and activities for children. There are coloring books, crayons and glue for them to play with. My first time here was starring the primary election earlier this year. The election process was very well organized and the staff was super friendly and knowledgeable. I'm in the process. Skip getting my first library card in Atlanta. New to town. I would say that the instructions for the library card varies depending on who you ask. Overall, a very nice library. Not the best in the world but a great neighborhood library.

Google
Parking there is an absolute scam! We parked for just 10 minutes to take a quick walk—on a holiday—and ended up with our car booted. We had to pay $75 to get it unbooted. The parking signs are horribly designed, making it easy to miss important details, and the parking enforcement staff were extremely rude. The whole experience feels like a deliberate setup to exploit people.

Google
Buckhead library is located in uptown Atlanta Buckhead. Accessible by Marta public transit. Very neat, quiet, & in the location of Buckhead Village. Aside from the scenic location, there’s plenty of information of free activities and community events in Fulton County.

Google
Thank you to county libraries that allow you to use a study room without having a card . Many locations in the state allow you to use the rooms. Not even busy but, again I guess REALLY important to keep empty just in case a card holder shows up . I guess I shouldn’t have asked . I should have hair went in there . First and last time coming here .

Google
I love this library! Upgraded building in the heart of Buckhead, and very large. This location also offers free parking in the library lot, despite it being in the middle of Buckhead Village. They offer study rooms and meeting rooms for card holders. All of the rooms are private and spacious. The customer service is great as well. Plus, of course you can rent out physical and e-books. A pleasant and worthwhile experience each time I visit. Good job Fulton County Library System.

Yelp
I don't have a printer and got tired of coordinating with friends to print stuff out for me, so I got a library card! The process was super simple. I applied online on the Fulton county library website. This library is located across from Buckhead Village next to Fado. It has its own free parking lot! I went around 5pm on a Tuesday and there were plenty of parking spots open! Getting a library card was a breeze and the lady helping at the desk was so friendly. I just had to show my confirmation email from applying online, ID/ proof of address. There are about 20 computers centrally located that connect to a printing station. You will have to load money onto your library account, but the process is very simple (coming from someone who is very bad with technology). Printing is 10 cents a page for black and white. I love this library (and it's very A24-esque deer statue out front) and can't wait to explore!

Yelp
Had a pretty good experience. I went during the day during what is usually core work hours on a weekday (3-4pm on a Thursday), so parking was not difficult to find. Though there were only a handful of spots beside the building available for non-employees, so I can see how it might be hard to find parking on a busy day. The book selection was decent. There was a big kids area. Large DVD selection. Even 3 private study rooms! Plenty of computers for people to go onto the internet. The library was a lot smaller than what I thought it would be just based on Google pictures. It is only one story. It was clean and quiet. A good place to bring kids or study.

Yelp
I put the address to the Atlanta Fulton Public Library - Buckhead Branch into my gps, and had no real idea how the place even looked or what to expect. In fact I almost drove right past it until I saw the sign pointing into the almost empty lot listed it as library parking. small but interesting dog statues as well as a standing antler wearing man greet you just outside the entrance, as well as the private parking lot which is great in Atlanta! Once you go inside, you see a massive library room. It's like a hallway that goes on and on and on, until you get to a glass wall that shows the sky and the atlanta fish market fish, which can be somewhat distracting in a good way. There's a very long wooden table that also stretches for quite a ways, able to sit easily 100 people if they all sat next to each other, but on this day, only about 10 of us took advantage of the table, and had lots of room to spread out. It all looks really cool, classic, with shelves and shelves of books. Study areas located in different spots in between the book shelves can be found on either side of the library walls, in addition to the central table. The room was quiet, minus a few stray laughs from kids, during my 3 hours there studying, and I never once was pulled out of my studying from noise or movement, definitely a good thing. My only gripe is that the library just isn't open long enough. They close at 6pm, and with 10 minutes left, they announce that the library is about to close, giving the amount of time remaining just so you aren't caught off guard. I like this library, and while it's a little far for me, if i'm in the area with a need to study, i'd happily stop in.

Yelp
Just got a library card along with 5 star treatment! The gentleman who helped (thin, lightly salted short hair - I didn't get your name ugh!) is the nicest most professional person I've met in GA! I kept thinking to my self, I am at a library right? Felt like I was in a fine dine restaurant. Even a homeless guy loitering got the 5 star too! LOVE it! This man needs a raise and a promotion ASAP!

Yelp
Inside: It's a sad comparison to the rest of the recently renovated and updated Buckhead shops, but I still like it. It's a library with a fair sized section. I don't normally browse as I use their online system to put books on hold. They have a few meeting rooms, which they use for other activities, including voting areas, seminars, etc. Parking lot: Decent enough spaces but the minute the library closes (actually probably an hour before), the valets at Fado's take over and watch you like a hawk to see if you're trying to get away with free parking. For what it's worth, I hope Fado's pays AFPLS to use their parking spaces and that it never gets taken down. Fulton uses Hoopla for their digital services, ehh, selection is okay, I'd much prefer Overdrize to take advantage of the Amazon Kindle books. :)

Yelp
I felt like I stepped into a historical treasure because I haven't been in a library for years! Parking lot was small but during lunchtime on a weekday, I was able to secure one of a handful of available parking spots left. The process of getting a library card was quick. It took less than 15 minutes. The staff is friendly and helpful. The library is clean. There are computers to check references and go online. Near the check out counter are a couple of racks with books on sale (prices were as low as $1). I was able to find what I was looking for and look forward to coming back!

Yelp
Ironically located behind the soon to be gutted Buckhead strip of bars and booty lies the Buckhead branch of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library. If you drive down Buckhead Avenue looking for a stodgy red brick government building, well, then, you'll miss it and be lost for hours. This particular branch of books and Dewey decimals is swathed in beautiful modern architecture and is quite the contrast to the Miller Lite advertising signs around the corner. Lots of glass, a warm black slate exterior, surprising sharp angles and shadows. Makes me happy. Now if you don't give a shite about modern architecture, ignore the spectacular entryway canopy and head for, well, the books.

Yelp
In this age of dying books, libraries, already few and far between shouldn't be inaccessible! Perhaps it is my own fault for attempting to visit the library during Atlanta rush hour (in my defense, it's early closing hours make this inevitable unless you do not work during the day), but it was a nightmare even getting to the place. THEN, upon arriving at the location, stuck in amongst restaurants and a ton of construction, an attendant stopped me outside the tiny parking lot adjacent to the library and told me parking would be $5. What?! I have to pay to park at the library? My subsequent trip to return my items was exactly the same (except this time, I told the attendant I wouldn't be paying him just to drop items in the dropbox.) THAT BEING SAID, this library is really beautiful. I'm not sure if it was a restaurant or a gallery in a past life or if the building was designed to be a library, but it's nautical theming is such a wonderful change from the typical EIFS boxes that usually contain books in the city. It's design invites imagination and wonder, and it's really a shame that it is hidden amongst the skyscrapers of Buckhead. The layout inside is pretty intuitive, they have a pretty decent movie collection, and the staff is helpful. Also, even though they are almost never available, this branch offers special Zoo and Aquarium passes that you can check out, as you would a book, and use to go to one of the Atlanta establishments.

Yelp
Great for studying. Never so busy that you can't have a table to yourself. And the staff is friendly and always willing to help and answer any questions you may have.

Yelp
I went to this library last week since it was the only one nearby that had the book I was looking for. I wanted to just sit and read, but there weren't any comfortable chairs, so I chose the floor. It was also really cold!! Save some (taxpayer) money and the planet by air conditioning less, please! I was disappointed by how old and run down the place seems. I expected better from Buckhead.

Yelp
Overall a quiet library if you ever wanna get away from the hustle and bustle that is the Northside of Atlanta. Just beware of the parking situation and you should be okay. You could probably park somewhere else close by just be mindful of traffic. Only thing is where are the two lion statues everybody keeps talking about? Where exactly are they located? I can't seem to find them lol

Yelp
I just want to say if this is the best Fulton County library then Dekalb libraries must be the cream of the crop. I guess they fixed the parking situation. Didn't see any signs for employees. All the power in the outlets are out right now so come with all your stuff charged or else you're screwed. Also WiFi is pretty spotty. Decent place to study, don't let the nice outside foul you, the inside looks straight out the 90s early 00s like most other libraries. Hope they get the outlets and WiFi fixed.

Yelp
Okay, I admit it. I've lived a block from this library for several years and never bothered to get a library card. Why would I need one? Well, right now I need one for Internet access since Comcast hasn't been out to establish my service again. This is a really cool looking library and I'm glad they decided not to sell out and allow it to be torn down (and then rebuilt) by the developers putting together The Streets of Buckhead. There are lots of computers to use and you get two 60 minute sessions per day. Not bad, but the wait can get a little tiresome (especially if inconsiderate people log in for a second session while people are waiting... *AHEM* really fat girl sending out resumes next to me). I have lots of books, but it's nice to know in case I need another one I can get it free here (neat idea, huh?). I think I'll check out some DVD's to watch until Netflix can send me the new season of Weeds.

Yelp
The whole Atlanta-Fulton library system gets big ups from me. Free books and music and free wi-fi in some branches, and easy management of your library account online. Also, you can pay fines with a debit card at some branches now, and they are working on setting up the system so you can pay online. The people at the Buckhead Branch are especially nice and a very well-read crowd. Ask a checkout clerk for a recommendation the next time you are in, and you may just discover your new favorite author.

Yelp
After a disappointing walk through of the Peachtree branch, I was SO excited to find the Buckhead one. Oddly, I've passed by it going to Fado's a million times yet I've never noticed that it was a library. For being in the city, it really excites me that they have a parking lot. The library itself is really spacious with plenty of study tables, and a decent amount of computers and dvd's. I give this only 4 stars instead of 5 though because although the library itself is large, it could use a larger (and maybe newer) selection of books.

Yelp
This modern structure is an island of civilization and civility in the middle of blocks of holes in the ground where construction has lingered for five years. Bravo to the fine public employees and volunteers of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System. I began using this branch when it was named Ida Williams Branch, in a previous structure. I love this structure, but my love is dimmed by the full-length window, now obscured by a housing development across Pharr Road, always bringing ultraviolet light to fade the spines of a shelf of biographies, and the dim overhead lights above the bookshelves, way way up difficult to change without a Genie lift, which makes it difficult to see. Also difficult to see: items on the bottom shelf, shelved sideways or any old way: there must be a solution for this. The Atlanta-Fulton County Public Library System, like other public libraries, serves more people more ways in a recession. I am a fan of Children's Services here in particular: always helpful, always available. There's a fine meeting room. I always look at the two shelves of books for sale, to benefit a support group I keep meaning to join. Meanwhile, here's my thumbs-up for Buckhead Branch.

Yelp
Yay! Free books! It's easy to forget how fun and useful these publicly funded book banks actually are. The Buckhead Brach gets four stars because it is a real architectural gem, the people are nice, and the location is very convenient. I could wish it had a larger selection, but it does have a good bit and popular authors are well represented. Like any library, if the next book in your series or the obscure thing you were looking for is not available, it is easy to place it on order and get it in a few days. This is very helpful if, like me, you cannot bear the thought of waiting to start the next book in a series. Because it is so gorgeous, the Buckhead branch is a nice place to sit and read all afternoon. When your studies are done and your brain suitably exhausted, you can step next door to unwind at Fados!

Yelp
I got my first libary card when I was five, so needless to say the library has always been apart of my life. This libary is super old school, which I like! It reminds me of my childhood. The libary staff are friendly and will help you find anything you need. They have plenty of computers for people to use and also free wi-fi. The new books sections is small but decent and the large-print books are right out front as well. I'll probably need to start checking out books from that section sooner than later. lol Only one con: The employee parking is about half of the parking spaces! It unreal.

Yelp
Buckhead Library is a great resource if you're like me and don't like to buy every single book you read! The best way to get a book you want is to go online and reserve it before getting there. Most best sellers and new releases will have a hold of at least 30ppl or at least 1 month... So be patient and take it for what it is- FREE BOOKS!

Yelp
If you need to study or do work and you're limited to going to a library, this is the best one in all of Atlanta.

Yelp
One of my favorite libraries in Atlanta! Convenient, good staff, and a wide selection of books to pick from.

Yelp
I almost got lost looking for the Buckhead branch - too bad I didn't read Deanna's review first! It's right next to Fado Irish Pub, and they share a parking lot. You may be asked to get a ticket stamped - but normally it really doesn't matter. Every visit has been successful - I always leave with a pile, and how can they go wrong - they have Jasper Fforde! Staff is friendly and helpful - I'm giving 4 stars only because I haven't found the books on cd yet - though that's probably more my fault.
google avatar

Joi M.

Yelp
I stopped in this library to browse books and I was drawn in by the large windows. There is not much of a view but I love the natural light! I was able to buy a hardcover cookbook for only $1.00! The staff is very nice and helpful. I reduced my rating to four stars because there is not enough parking.
google avatar

Yelp
I love this library. People are super friendly and helpful --but how you going to be a library and the patrons and the ladies behind the desk loud as hell? I'm just saying?

Lauren H.

Yelp
I used to grump about the selection at this library, but it's really improved a lot over the last few months. I used to prefer the Sandy Springs Branch, but since I can walk to Buckhead Branch, I'm glad I finally warmed up to it. The adult "new fiction" section is still very small compared to its counterpart in Sandy Springs, but there's always interlibrary loan if you're looking for something specific. My main bookish addiction these days is young adult (YA) fiction, and the YA shelves at Buckhead have improved tremendously. For a while, they mainly had older books, but lately they've been mixing plenty of brand-new books in with the old ones. It's funny, though, that whoever runs the section hardly ever puts these books on the "New YA fiction" shelf. The same books are on that shelf week after week, whereas I'll find stuff in the rest of the section that's still only in full-price hardback down the street at Barnes and Noble. Also, there's a surprisingly good selection of CD audiobooks at the Buckhead branch. The ones I've gotten from there have been in good condition and haven't tripped up my car stereo's cranky CD player. I've noticed some fairly recent fiction works in the audiobooks section, such as Jhumpa Lahiri's Unaccustomed Earth. The architecture of this place is pretty brilliant, and I'm glad that the un-artistic souls who wanted to see the Buckhead Branch reconstructed to match the much-delayed Streets of Buckhead were soundly defeated. I'm fairly sure the Aaron Rents dude who's been buying up all of Buckhead was involved with that. One thing that Buckhead Branch does lack is enough parking for busy days. I once dropped in on a weekday to do some research for a work project, and there was not a space to be found -- not in the private lot, nor on the street. I walk here most of the time, but it's a bit of a haul if I've got a stack of books and my laptop bag with me. Maybe when Streets of Buckhead finally opens (cough), there'll be an extra parking lot or two for us plebes who prefer the library over Hermes.
