Buckhorn Resort Restaurant

Every year when I return to Munising, Michigan, one of the first stops I make is the Buckhorn Resort restaurant — and it’s for one reason: the liver and onions. Hands down, it’s the best I’ve ever had. Perfectly cooked, loaded with sweet, caramelized onions, and paired with golden fries and creamy coleslaw — it’s a hearty, comforting meal that hits the spot every single time. This year’s visit was extra special because my loyal buddy Bucket got to join me for dinner. The Buckhorn staff couldn’t have been more welcoming. Our server, Rita, was friendly, attentive, and made sure everything was just right. There’s something about enjoying a great meal with a beautiful view of the Northwoods, your best dog at your feet, and that familiar plate of liver and onions in front of you that makes this place feel like a second home. Thank you, Buckhorn Resort, for another unforgettable evening. See you next year — same order, same table (if I’m lucky), same great memories.

Classic North Woods Supper Club with bar atmosphere. The table had the whitefish sandwich, the Buckhorn burger, and the chicken tenders and fries. All really really good! Try the coleslaw, the fries, and the pickled beets! Friendly and competent staff. Lovely to sit by the window at sunset. Nice collection of local brews.

Delicious food, and a great local UP Munishing, MI recommend restaurant and bar. THANKS!!! (Great recommendations) Broiled white fish cooked to perfection with firm veggies side dish. What a wonderful surprise set on backdrop of a extremely large Great Lake Superior viewed from restaurant rear windows. An enormous Lake Superior can be viewed from back Buckhorn Restaurant windows. 3PM-5PM is a terrific time eat an early dinner and view sparkling lake water over trees during dinner. (OCT. 2-6, 2025) Who knew this would be such a tremendous recommendation by owner Indian Springs, Munishing, MI. Memorable! Buckhorn Resort Lodge & Restaurant, local eats and biker bar, sits on gigantically beautiful Lake Superior. The white broiled fish with veggies is incredibly DELICIOUS. And worth the 15 min drive from Munishing, MI. Better than fish eaten at newly renovated Waldorf Astoria- The Lex week before. Dinner is spectacular there! Enjoyed much much much more than Waldorf Astoria 'The Lex' (NY), fish a week prior. Don't judge fish on the wall, small exterior, or driving distance without GPS from Munishing, MI. You're in for a delightfully surprising delicious evening. Love large TV for sports fans also.

Rita was our server and was excellent. I got the whitefish and it was great but maybe a little pricey? Love the view of Hovey lake. Wife got some kinda wrap and it was good. Love the decor and atmosphere. One of a kind of place especially if you are snowmobiling or just a road trip.

Yummy, classic up-north meals! There were 4 of us, and we each enjoyed our dinners. Soups are homemade, and so good! I really enjoyed the whitefish sandwich. The views from their huge windows are also very nice, and we sat at the bar where we had great service. We’ll definitely return next time we’re in the area!

Great views of the nearby lake, but the food was only okay and the waitress messed up our order twice. The fish sandwich apparently comes with a single 3" triangle of fish and the pasty was small and very dry, but the fries were good and the fried chicken the neighboring table got smelled really good.

This place is a gem. We had their broasted chicken and my wife and I agreed that it was the best chicken we've ever had. The place was so clean and the servers were welcoming and great at their jobs. We will travel to the UP again just for the chicken. Thank you.

Love the view from their picture windows! Fun to watch birds at their bird feeders too. Great food & drinks & friendly service. They also have a small motel & a rental lodge next door, but I haven't stayed there yet. Close to Munising, a few miles off north end of hwy 13 or off Hwy 94.

It was getting late in the afternoon and we were looking for a place to stay for the night. We saw the Buckhorn Sign and decided to see if they have a room for the night. The place was busy but they had a room available and the restaurant was open. After getting into our room, we went into the restaurant for dinner. It was very busy but we were seated quickly. Service was excellent and food and drink selection was very good. When our food order came, the portions were more than adequate and the flavors were excellent. Our motel room was also very good and it was very quiet. If you looking for a good motel with a great restaurant and you're in the area the Buckhorn is a great place to stop.

We just ate at The Buckhorn Restaurant and I'm so glad we did! We almost didn't go because of a bad review on Yelp, but a local recommended it having just eaten there the night before. Our server was very helpful and gave excellent suggestions. The chicken and dumpling soup was homemade and delicious! I had the broasted chicken and my husband had the perch. Both were fresh, hot and delicious ! I wanted a drink from the bar, and our server got the bartender to come to our table and make suggestions for me. She hand created one especially for me that was just perfect! As we ate, we watched birds eat from the feeders hanging from the large picture windows overlooking the lake. This restaurant is a must-go destination!

The service here was very good! She checked on us frequently and had a good sense of humor. We enjoyed the perch, whitefish, and hula chicken sandwiches. The onion rings were sweet and tender! The caramel apple cake was outstanding!

Went to the restaurant for dinner. Staff are very friendly, professional and polite. Long waiting time for food to arrive 45 min Good sandwiches. Dinner - chicken was overcooked and too salty. Great view though.

It was a challenge to find, but once there, the bartender even came out from behind the bar to help us get a table and he cleaned it himself. Our server was fantastic. I had the sirloin, wife had the french dip, daughter had the chicken strips. All of them were great. Very friendly, very prompt. And then we checked out the lake. Highly recommend. Thought it would be tough, since it was a last minute decision after 6:30 on a Friday night but it all worked out.

Went for whitefish. Extremely over priced. Two tiny thin pieces that had no flavor at all. It was served in a grocery store bun with shribbled lettuce. The tartar sauce tasted like pickles. The view is 5 stars. Service and food 1star.

A hidden jewel for a restaurant. Home made turkey sandwich smothered with gravy and served with spuds. Pork chop=phenomenal! It is a drive from town. Great food! Kinda busy. But fast and great waitstaff.

The Buckhorn is the premier destination for any Munising area outdoor adventure. It is especially clean and nicely appointed. The food is exceeds expectations for casual fare. I especially enjoyed the classic Rachel sandwich. Service is routinely exceptional. Highly recommended!

This review is about the restaurant at Buckhorn Resort. I am so sorry to post a negative review but I am hoping staff and customers may be able to benefit from this. I wanted so badly to like this experience! My husband and I are in the Munising area for a month and we generally cook our meals at the cabin where we stay. Today, we planned a nice day out in the area and we decided we would have dinner out as a special treat. It was definitely busy there tonight. And there were only 2 servers working. But, we ordered our dinners and after 45 minutes of not even being checked on, I flagged down our server and asked for a water refill and asked if she could check on the status of our dinner since we wondered if the order somehow didn't get out in to the kitchen. The guests around us, some of whom came in after us, had already eaten and left. She came back and said our dinners would be out in a couple minutes. When the food arrived, it was cold, especially my husband's baked potato and my fries. Our server did not come back to check on us and we flagged her down and reminded her that we ordered a side of vegetables and that our food was cold. She came back with the vegetables, which were also cold and said she took 10% off of the bill. I was pretty stunned at this! 10%? I asked her to talk with her manager. She came back and had taken 25% off which was also an insult to us. I gave her back my plate and said we were tired and just wanted to leave. We paid the bill and also left a tip because she may not have been trained properly in customer service. But we will not go back nor can we recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Being a City Boy, my first impression of this place was "it's in the middle of nowhere!". After that, it was the spectacular view of Hovey Lake. Then, it was the swift service, the beer selection, and the food options for a picky party of 5. We arrived for lunch as hungry travelers from Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, and yet there seemed to be something for everyone. I had a Blackrocks 51K IPA with my Reuben, which I would have to say is the best I've had in the Midwest. My wife had the Bell's Two Hearted Ale with her perch sandwich. The rest of us had pizza, burgers, salads, and basically an order of curve balls, but it didn't seem to phase the staff. All in all, it's out of the way, but well worth the drive.

Disappointed with meal on our last night of vacation. My sirloin was tasty. Husband's White Fish (which is why we came) was very lacking. I wish we would have taken a photo. It was pathetic-two small fillets about 1/8" thick, California blend and packaged applesauce and cole slaw. He is not a big eater, but was still really hungry after he finished so I gave him some of my steak. The fillets were not tasty. We trekked from Marquette over there based on reviews and because they had a few different kinds of fresh fish on menu. No salads for our meals. Two stars for the view and my steak.

I don't know what I can't say about the Buckhorn - I absolutely love it! We had such a great stay for a three day stretch while exploring Pictured Rocks and the surrounding area. The Buckhorn is just a delight, they don't make motels like this anymore, that's for sure. Built in the '30s, the bar is a dark old school gem with a small pool table and a cobble stone fire place leading into the dining room with its picturesque overlook of the lake below. The rooms were roomy, clean and cozy, beds were comfy and we ate at the restaurant two nights which easily boats some of the best food in the area: a nice selection of fried and broiled fish (the Blue Gill was excellent!), a fun and hearty burger menu, and a lot of things I wish we'd had time to try but which I eyed pleasantly on other tables, the broasted chicken and French dip sandwiches looked particularly great. I 100% would recommend the Buckhorn to anyone I know or traveling to the Munising area, it's a short drive into downtown, the dark night sky is beautiful, you pass two roadside waterfalls along the way and its centrally located to short drives to pretty much most of the UP: 45 minutes to Marquette, about 50 minutes each to Escanaba and Manistique, 1.5 hours to Tahquamenon Falls area, and a short drive to all of the Pictured Rocks lakeshore attractions and trails. This was our first time and we already can't wait to go back! For what you'd pay anywhere else in the area, the rooms, food, and drinks at the Buckhorn are a great deal. Say hey to Ben the owner and all of the super friendly staff, they are happy to help with anything you may need, from guest services to lots of hidden gem area recommendations.

This is a usual trail stop for our group while snowmobiling each year. Always good food and friendly staff. Nice too that they have a gas pump on site although it's premium only.

This review is for the restaurant only. There isn't much way out here in Hiawatha National Forest, but we were pleasantly surprised. Plenty of parking and a nice lake view. We had a large party, but they did great. They have a good selection of food items. Nothing really fancy, but everything we ordered was delicious and hot. If we are in the area, we'd definitely come back.

Came here for dinner on a Friday night via a suggestion from a local in munising. This is the spot you want to go if you are looking to avoid the touristy main spots down town. It was a decent drive out of the way, maybe a 10-15 min drive south of the city. Totally worth it. We were lucky to have a dinner table view right over otter lake (I believe). It was a truly beautiful. The service was kinda slow, but come on, be realistic this is the U.P. there's no such thing as a hurry. We ordered the perch dinner - delicious - and the Buckhorn burger. Get it. Best burger I had on the U.P. trip to picture rocks. It's got a honey glaze type thing going on and they really knocked it out of the park. Great food, good price, and great scenery. Make the drive out of town, it's worth it.

Buckhorn burger was the best burger I have had! The view is beautiful and the staff is friendly. High recommend!

We had a pretty poor time at the Buckhorn last evening. To begin with, the menu listed battered fish. My wife specifically asked the waitress if it really was battered and not just breaded and the waitress assured her it was battered. When her fish came, it was obviously not battered. The waitress told my wife that she was going by what the menu said, as if she didn't know what she was serving. She has been working there for years! The pub chips were rubbery, not well done like we ordered. My wife sent hers back to be cooked more. The iced tea was so watery it was clear and had to be sent back. My burger was OK for a stock frozen patty thrown on the griddle. I never got a refill on my Coke. The waitress said she was too busy. For the past twenty years we liked the Buckhorn but lately it has been so disappointing that we doubt we will ever return.

THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE MOTEL ONLY, we didn't eat at the restaurant. This place is old school, physical door key, small tube tv on a stand, wood paneling, but everything was very clean. It was unseasonably hot when we stayed here (92°) and we were disappointed to not see an A/C But there was a small articulating fan on a desk. But after we thought about it we realized that the average high temperature up there is about 71° in July and August so there isn't a real need for A/C. Our room was small, very small. We arrived here pretty late after a long day so it didn't bother us. But if you were to spend a few hours here you could get a little cramped. The bathroom... this was really the only major drawback for me. When you're sitting on the toilet, the counter is literally right in front of you like a tall table. you could easily put a laptop on there and browse the web comfortably. We had to hold the handle of the toilet down for about 3 seconds to fully flush it. Lastly, the reason I deducted a star was the shower... I'm 6 feet tall and the shower head was MAYBE 5 feet up the wall. I literally had to duck and crouch to get my head under there. I thought it was funny until I had to do that. Overall I give the Buckhorn 4 out of 5 for what it is. You need to understand what to expect. Just because it's a 4 star motel doesn't mean its a step below a Hilton.

The motel was a Major disappointment! They promise WiFi but failed to deliver. Had I known, I would never have stayed. Had it not been 10:30pm on a Friday night when the realization struck, I would have left. I sought assistance in the restaurant 2 times. Each time they "adjusted" the modem/router and assured me it would work in my room---it did Not. The WiFi worked in the restaurant and restaurant parking lot, but not in my room nor sitting outside my room which was (nearly) farthest from the restaurant. Further, the outside of the motel was beautiful, but the inside was sorely in need of care. The shower tile was moldy and the sink handle snapped off when I turned it off, preventing the use of hot water in the sink. The food at the restaurant was 4 out of 5. The broasted chicken was Amazing! Best I've ever had. Yet, overpriced at $18 for a 4 piece meal (inc. salad bar and potato). Overall, I would dine here again (if I wasn't so angry over the false promise of WiFi in the motel), but I would never stay overnight again ever. This is the first negative review I have ever posted. I have never felt virtually lied to at any other establishment.

Lot of hype about the buckhorn from locals. Disappointed with it. Food was average. Service was below average unless you are a local or Known to the staff. Fuel price was highway robbery. Wouldn't go out of my way to go back.

We only ate at the restaurant we didn't stay at the hotel. Great food though. Amazing staff. My 10 year old ate the pork chop like a champ. Salad bar was fresh. By far my favorite meal of our entire trip. Very homey feel and everyone was very friendly. Can't wait to go back again I want to try the Broiled Chicken!

Great view, good food, friendly staff. New owner. Back in the woods, quiet setting, but on ORV / snowmobile trail and main road.

Stayed here the last night of our trip. I wish we had stated here the entire trip. The room was very clean and functional. Staff was helpful. They clearly maintain and care about their business. Food was very good and priced well. Definitely planning to come back.

Love this place! This is our third time staying here, nice bar, beautiful view and great owners. We will never stay anywhere else when in the area!

Food was ok, service was horrible. Kids enjoyed the pizza & chicken strips. My husband order a ribeye steak medium rare & it came more on the rare side, but we didn't send it back as it took forever to get it. I had the chicken dinner and that was good. Salad bar isn't much, just the basics. Our waitress acted like we were a bother and didn't check back to see if we needed anything. She instead stood by the soda machine drinking soda. The system they use to pay is a bit odd also.

Stoped in on a whim, we were camping at widewaters and were pleasantly suprized. Food was great. Service was friendly and prompt, prices perfect and view was fenaminal. .. definatetly will return and highly recommend

This place was crazy awesome. We stopped for gas and had to stay for a drink. It is so cute inside and the view is amazing. Service was good and the food looked and smelled amazing. Judging from the crowed I would guess it was good but sadly we had just eaten. We wanted to come back for dinner but it found this Gem on our last day. We might consider staying here next year.

My daughter accidentally left her purse at the restaurant. After she discovered it she called to inquire and a very rude man (the owner) never checked and just told her it was not there. My husband then physically went in to the restaurant and guess what was there! The purse! Maybe the food is decent, maybe the rooms are clean but you do not treat customers like that. They lost our business for good.

Quick service . Great view . Good north woods fare. Whitefish tasty generous salad bar. Chicken a little on tough side . Nice beer selection.

I eat here every time I visit friends in Munising. They have a great Friday night fish fry, but come early, it is packed, all locals eat here!! Beautiful setting on a lake, great bar area, family friendly too!! Great steaks, but a varied menu. Small, but good salad bar, fast, friendly service, clean and comfortable feeling. Very casual dress, lots of laughter, great food, good mixed drinks.. you will not be disappointed!! Look up their site online, they have motel rooms also.. never stayed there though.. about a fifteen or twenty minute ride from Munsiing, but worth it! paved road, watch for deer, but bring your appetite!!

I am a snowmobiler and I have been to Buckhorn countless times. Normally I get a burger and I have never really been impressed with the food. Tonight I decided to try the fish and I have never been more dissapointed in my life. The fish was HORRIBLE! I ordered the whitefish that the area is known for and it was a let down to say the least. The meal was outrageously priced. I love fish and assumed since the restaurant was on a lake, the fish was going to be good. Not only was the fish greasy and falling apart, it tasted like I chewed up 3 fish oil pills in my mouth. The only thing that helped me get the fish down was my drink that the server never refilled. To top it off, for five people, the bill was 120 dollars. If you are thinking about eating/stopping at this place I would highly recommend reconsidering.

Food was good, simple menu, everything was fresh. The only complaint I had is that they had only one waitress/bartender for the whole place on a Saturday at peak dinner time. Don't get me wrong she was friendly and was working her butt off to get everything done and deserved a good tip. I just think the owner is being a little cheap by not hiring more staff. Don't forget though that the food and drinks were good, I just think the owners should spring for a few more staff.

Went here for dinner with family and was blown away by their Buckhorn Burger. Awesome burger- 1/3# bourbon-glazed beef patty, covered with Fromage bleu cheese and bacon. Great combination, great execution. Wonderful view. Will certainly be returning.

it's a nice central inexpensive place to stay if you are traveling all over the UP. we came when the special was pay for 4 nights get 3 free. it's a very clean room. bathroom is updated, but there isn't really hot hot water for shower. the bed is better than what we've experienced for these types of motel/hotels, but it's older style mattress (you know like the one's you flip, not rotate). the decor is outdated, but if you're up there to travel then you're not really in your room that much anyway. the restaurant was nice and food was tasty, little high in price. we only ate there once while we were there. they stated there was complimentary breakfast starting at 6:30, but we found out it was more like 7 or 7:30, whenever the young man decided to get ready to make the coffee and put out the bagels. one morning he reminded my boyfriend we have coffee in our rooms, which we knew, but it wasn't as good as their coffee. we are just early risers as we had many places planned for an entire day. it was quiet while we were there, which was nice. it is a little out of the way, into the off beaten path... but, we didn't stay out too late to worry about hitting any deer. for the price we felt it sufficed our needs for this vacation. i would recommend it to others.
