One of the best experiences I have had in ages. The bowl of green chili is seriously the best I've ever had. I always have had an idea of what this dish should be every time I come through New Mexico. This was as close to that platonic ideal as I could possibly imagine. I would drive a long way just to get another bowl of that. We also got the prime rib, green Chile loaded fries. These too were just outstanding. The prime rib was so incredibly flavorful. The portion sizes were quite generous as well. The atmosphere was perfect, with live music and locals dancing. I felt like I had stepped back in time. Service was impeccable. Just a wonderful experience all around. I am including pictures of the attached opera house. Such an amazing piece of old west Americana!

Google
The manager, Katie waited on us and we never wanted for anything. We ordered the prime rib and it was cooked to perfection. Prices were moderate/good and drinks were reasonable. The restaurant and Opera House is a hoot and a colorful history that isn't surprising considering Silver City's wild past

Google
This is a great piece of history, dusted off and operating almost as it would have in the 1860s. We haven't tried the food here yet, but we enjoy grabbing a drink here after a day of sightseeing and traveling the back roads in the area. Make sure to get a look at the opera house while you're there.

What a great, historic, delicious place to eat! Was in the area hiking and stopped in. This place is so cool and the area is stunning! A very beautiful and interesting part of the country. I was impressed with the food selection. The service was excellent, and my steak was so flavorful and delicious! When was the last time you had Sarsaparilla as a beverage choice? Loved it I highly recommend this restaurant and saloon! Thank you for a great experience.

Google
I had high hopes for this restaurant. Recommended by several locals, but it failed to wow me. Ordered steak (filet) medium rare, came out medium well, for over $50 this shouldn't happen. I was offered to remake, but my company already had their food, so I opted to just go with it. The sear on the steak was great! Seasonal veggie of a spinach was interesting, half tasted great, the other half just green mush. Mashed potatoes were good. The name has saloon in it, but seems to bill itself as a fine dining establishment. Might give it another shot, or not.

I have been here a few other times in the past. My family started with drinks in the bar then went to the dining area for dinner. The food is very good, big portions and quite pricey. It's not somewhere you would want to go often but more on special occasions. I suggest reservations. It's also very dark inside so if anybody has issues with sight you may have to help them reading the menu. I'm adding pictures which didn't really do the food justice.

Google
What an amazing restaurant in the middle of nowhere. About 6.5 miles outside of Silver City, this is what you would expect in a major US city. The ambience and atmosphere are perfect for a relaxing evening with the soft sounds of a live guitar in the background. I arrived about 6:15 PM and there were no tables available as a reservation is required well in advance. Who would have thought? There was a seat at the bar, which allowed me to enjoy this true treasure of Americana. The menu offers an outstanding selection of high end dishes that are well prepared by what must me professionally trained chief. The Buckhorn salad is an above average house salad at a very reasonable six dollars. The filet mignon was perfectly seasoned and cooked perfectly rare. It's nice to enjoy a nicely aged steak that is so well seasoned that you don't even think about touching it with sauce. The baked potato and steam broccoli were just as outstanding. For dessert I had the Crème brûlée. Words do not do it justice. WOW! I did learn that the executive chef and owner, Thomas moved here from San Francisco about 8 years where he owned several high-end steakhouses. He simply wanted to get away from the rat race that is San Francisco. The winner in this is not Thomas, it's the entire population of Silver City and the surrounding area! Thomas was not here tonight. My incredible meal was prepared by Chef Amy and her talented team! I don't want to forget the awesome bartenders. The two young ladies were friendly and attentive despite the packed house and all that comes with that….... Buckhorn Saloon & Opera House is a must try when visiting the Silver City area! I will be back many, many more times....

Google
Food was AMAZING!!! Service was a bit lack luster!!! Waited 30 min for our food when people that came in 15-20 after we got there, they got theirs at the same time!!! Might want to work on that…. Music was great, but once again…if I have to ask you what’s going on with our dinner before you tell us….NOT GOOD!!!! We stayed at the lodge right up the road from here…and this place has a reputation from what I understand of the same issue and people not being so nice when they don’t get the service that a $50-$100 restaurant should be offering. Waitress focusing on one table and ignoring the rest…and attitude…let me just tell you..whew!!!!

Yelp
Food is always amazing!! Service is immaculate!! Everything about Buckhorn is great. I came in this past Thursday and everyone of the employees were so respectful and nice. 100/10 would definitely recommend

Yelp
The Buckhorn is an institution in Pinos Altos and deservedly so! It's a delight to take in the mix of history, art, and fun that fill a space that's stood in one shape or another since the late 1800s silver rush that kickstarted this area's settlement. Staff are friendly and patient with dietary restrictions and kid energy. I understand that the Buckhorn doesn't run with vegans in mind, and I appreciate that the servers and kitchen staff were willing to remove ingredients to accommodate my dietary preferences. The menu does a decent job of listing ingredients, but it doesn't have detailed allergen information. The vegetarian friendly Ultimate Portobello was well prepared and had a great texture, but without a vegan cheese or aioli alternative I definitely missed the experience intended by the menu. The bun may also contain dairy. The staff and atmosphere were wonderful, but I can't recommend the food to a vegan as it stands, and there may not be enough vegan customers to warrant more accommodation. That said, a vegan will still be able to find something to eat even if it's through a process of ingredient elimination.

Yelp
What a great place! Great staff, excellent drinks and great food. It's got that old saloon atmosphere that adds to the experience. The Chicken Parm was very great as was everything else we had. We will be back next time we get down to that part of NM!

Super good meals Great service Interesting ambiance Always busy They even serenade you for your birthday ...

Yelp
I really enjoyed the vibe in this place the moment I walked in. I wished we could've gotten the bar / front area but it was filling up fast and we just missed it. Luckily they gave side room la with plenty of seating. I got a chicken sandwich because I wasn't hungry thighs for a steak, but I know that's what they're known for. Next time... My friend got the house burger and loved it. Although the bun was meh, she said. We split an order of green Chile cheese fries, which she loved - the fries were nice and crispy but to me the green chile sauce could've had more flavor. She loved it tho. Great salads. Will be back.

Yelp
Not only is the food great at the Buckhorn, but the ambiance and the service is 5 stars! The historical Buckhorn saloon cannot be missed on your visit to the area - Katie and the entire staff will take good care of you. Be prepared to either make a reservation or come early because they do tend to get busy. It's a very cozy atmosphere and we love it!

Yelp
We had company and they just loved the ambiance and they feeling of going back on time. We were seated by the fire . Our meal started out with cocktails appetizers and salad. All were delicious meatballs and fries with green chili cheese. Dinners were glazed Salmon, chicken parmasean, and green chili Alfredo. All were well prepared and flavorful. We had a very memorable evening. The staff was so friendly and efficient.

Yelp
First the positives. The atmosphere was quaint and obviously steeped in history. However for the price point, the experience was not good. It took z40 min for us to get our steaks. When we got them, they were lukewarm warm. The server was attentive but kitchen crew was apparently lacking.

Kaitlin E.

Yelp
Service was great. However, the food was not cooked well and the flavor was not good. Quality also needs to be improved

Yelp
This was our first time back to the Buckhorn since the late 1980's. This used to be our go-to for a brew after work and a good meal. We generally stayed in the bar as we did for this visit. Nothing much has changed including the dance hall girl above the bar. After a hard day we chose to order the Buckhorn Burger medium rare. I forgot to take a picture before I started eating so my picture shows about 1/4 of the burger and fries. The burger came with lettuce, tomatoes and onions which overwhelmed the soft bun. This was my only bitch. It was so dark I couldn't tell how the burger was cooked. I think it may have been more rare than my ordered medium rare. The fries were freshly cut, a positive to me. Service was good given the size of the crowd. The dining room looked pretty full as well. As to ambiance, the only negative is the hanging lights look like they haven't been cleaned since the 80's even tho they now seem to have LED bulbs. There was live music which we enjoyed. The present owner or manager came by and said hello which was nice. I recommend that you stop by when in the Silver City area.

Mark T.

Yelp
I've always loved coming here over the years and their food is usually good. We went the other night and decided to sit at the bar. 4 or 5 people passed by us and not one said hello. After about 5 minutes one of the girls gave us water and menus but again not even a hi guys. After about 10 minutes of no one asking us if we want something to drink or if we wanted to order food we left. So disappointing. Went to another place and they waited on us within a minute. Service matters - don't ignore your customers. They all looked mad that night. Not pretty.

Yelp
Here we are again at the Buckhorn Saloon our favorite spot when we visit Silver city, New Mexico. Wonderful food and great service. The Buckhorn Burger was really good. Full service bar, to go orders welcome, thanks bartenders for great experience! . Cheers

Camilo C. G.

Yelp
This is a find. The outside looks sketchy, but inside the decor in late 19th century. The food is great.

Joe P.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our recent dinner at the Buckhorn. It has great history, friendly staff, good service, and delicious food! Definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
Tasty food, wonderful ambience. A historical gem - one of the oldest continuously operated saloons in the Southwest.

Yelp
After being so very disappointed with the culinary scene in Silver City we expanded our search and found this place. When we first arrived we were greeted with the amazing smells bellowing from the kitchen. The beautifully carved back bar makes you feel like you just step through a time portal. We started with House Made Chips with the green chili salsa and queso, so very good. Each delicious on their own but dip the chip in the queso then top it off with the green chili, OMG mind blowing. For dinner we ordered the Ribeye steak with the loaded baked potato. It was absolutely amazing. We can't wait to eat here again tomorrow evening.

Yelp
My friend took me there cause she wanted me to have a nice dinner for my birthday. The waitress never returned to our table after bringing a bottle of wine. Our food was plopped down and no one ever came back except to drop the check off. Had to flag someone down to get a desert menu then never got to order because no one ever came back. The food was great. The ambience is special, but the experience is somewhat spoiled by a complete lack of service. I'd compare to any fast food restaurant. Actually had a chic fila provide better service. I was sad for my friend to spend so much on terrible service.
google avatar

Tom L.

Yelp
The place was recommended to us in town so we thought it was worth the drive. Well not so. We shared the 1/2 free range chicken. It was overcooked, tuff and dry. A Walmart rotisserie chicken is way better and 1/5th the price. Our service was good. Not worth the drive.
google avatar

Yelp
Great place and very friendly staff. I do recommend reservations unless you are ok sitting at the bar and eating. So good we went a second night.

Yelp
I was passing through Silver City and planned to spend the night. I reached out to a friend for dinner and he suggested we try the Buckhorn. Great suggestion! The restaurant is designed to look like and old-time saloon, complete with widen floors, swinging doors, and large painting of bar madams adorning the walls. They have a full service bar. We were there on a week eight so it wasn't to crowded but I would suggest reservations as I can see how this may get busy, especially in the summer. I ordered the ribeye, and I have to say, it was VERY good. Well-marbled so lots of flavor. Cooked exactly as I asked and tons of flavor. The sides and salad were fine with no complaints. Not as outstanding as the steak but fine. We decided to forego dessert but they appear to have some good selections. A very nice place to spend time with a friend or family!

Yelp
I'll give the Buckhorn Saloon is a solid 4, and probably a 4.5. It is a very old establishment with a lot of character and a little dust and cobwebs to go with it. We were seated promptly for a Saturday night. My ribeye was cooked to perfect medium rare with a nice seasoning. My son loved his chicken parm and the wifey killed her pulled pork sandwich in record time. Don't forget to tip your servers!!!

Lesley S.

Yelp
Pretty cool place in Pinos Altos. The food is decent. The service is always really bad. I'm not sure if it's lack of staff or lack of training. I wish they would put some money in to it and update it a bit. Perhaps a patio out front. It could be a great place for the community to hang out.
google avatar

Yelp
Very good food and one of few places in Silver City area to get a decent meal. Herb-roasted chicken made several meals and was very tasty without being overpowered with too many herbs. The asian salmon was cooked perfectly but the sauce was too salty. Both dishes served on top of mashed potatoes that were very good. Seasonal vegetables also done well, Bread and salads were generous and the dressings very good (vinaigrette and bleu cheese). Service was courteous and friendly. Server could have been by table a little more often to refill water. Old West atmosphere but not too tacky.

Tanya M.

Yelp
I haven't been to Buckhorn in so long. let me start by saying, Brav-a!!! Our bartender Jasmine and server Katie were amazing. hats off to the chef as well. Our ribeye was so perfect , I don't want to eat a steak anywhere else!!! fantastic atmosphere. I think it's honestly the best place to eat in the Silver City area. You cannot go wrong!!! Thank you Buckhorn staff. We visited the night of 3/7/24 ...
google avatar

Yelp
Everything about this place was outstanding! It was so busy we had to sit at the bar but got great service and the food was delicious. Blue cheese salad dressing was amazing!

Mike W.

Yelp
Interesting place with good ambiences Waitress was slow in attending to us even though it was early evening and not busy. We were there for Wed. Night spaghetti special which was awesome. Still it was over priced. The regular menu was very expensive. Music was good. Great cucumber martini. Not a place to go on regular basis unless you have lots of disposable income.

Ariana G.

Yelp
If you get there within three hours of closing the staff treats you like crap. The last three times we got there *at least* three hours before closing. The first time the staff (including the manager) actively ignored us (making eye contact and discussing us with other staff) as we stood at the entrance for 20 minutes then when another couple came and we waited another 10 minutes finally sent a waitress to say "we are so overwhelmed and we are all so tired and we are out of a bunch of things... we aren't closed but...." We all asked what they were out of and since we weren't going to order any of it we decided to stay since we had waited so long. The service we got after we stayed was equally rude and dismissive- we practically had to beg for our check. Tonight we had an abrasive waitress who was rude and seemed somewhat aggressive- I assume she was close to going home and was frustrated to have a new table? At some point she disappeared and we had to ask someone at the bar for another waitress so we could have our check so we could finally leave. The music was really nice. This place has great food and a nice atmosphere but such lazy and rude staff- not worth how frustrating each interaction is.

Yelp
Posh pub in Pinos Altos "ghost town "? What unique "local flavor" beyond your usual tourist attraction.! Amazing historical buildings., Buckhorn saloon also houses the entry door (a bit hidden so ask) to the "Historic Opera House" . The open house definitely worth visiting. It is also still used for performance and private parties . . The buildings are joined through a side dining area . We just Loved the frontier Wild West saloon (and brothel )vibe ! The food was upscale gastro-pub , and worth every penny . Our server was quick to get our orders, and very attentive and efficient. We enjoyed our appetizers very much . . The classic Bleu cheese "wedge salad " a blast from the past ... &a classic ! The roast beef and mushrooms "soup of the day" was so complex& savory. Amazing burgers , such fresh ground-beef , perfectly flame grilled as per temperature ordered. The French fries were even memorable in their perfection. Definitely a great place to dine with friends for a celebration , or bring a special someone .

Carol S.

Yelp
If you are near Silver City and enjoy fine dining in a historic rustic setting don't miss this place. Excellent food and place. And if staying overnight in the area check out what's happening next door in the old Opera House. The 7 mile drive is worth it.
google avatar

Phyllis H.

Yelp
The was an ultra special experience! The steak was wonderful and flavorful. The atmosphere is one of a kind. I highly recommend a trip to The Buckhorn Saloon and Opera House.
google avatar

Lourdes D.

Yelp
Was wonderful. Although prices are ridiculous . All I could afford together was tea. Don't know what is so special there, that they have to have very HIGH PRICES. It's ridiculous. Maybe $20.00 a hamburger? You get the picture?. The place itself is a very nice admasfier , but the rest is not. You better have lots of money if you take a guest, NO LIE. maybe 4 persons about $200.00.? If you are lucky. Good luck. Your choice, you decide. The place outside looks like it's ready to crumble. Good luck if it comes down when you are inside the building eating your high-priced meal. It might look nice, but. It's not. It should NOT be allowed to be open at all. Here is who YOU KNOW.
google avatar

Stephen M.

Yelp
Such a fun meal! Loved the ribeye, cooked to medium rare perfection. The green chili stew was unreal. Our waiter was so great and even gave us a tour of the haunted opera house. Just a fun experience all around!
google avatar

Teresa F.

Yelp
Friendly atmosphere, great service, lots of great history. The burgers where perfectly cooked to order, you get transported into a different time by picturing what went on in this building in the past. Enjoyed it very much. Parking is scattered.
google avatar

Xx X.

Yelp
Wow! The music isn't to my taste but what are you gonna go in rural New Mexico? The building, however, is gorgeous! The restaurant is well run. Excellent bar, menu, service, it's all superb. I love this place. Now if they could play blues instead of country.

Robin B.

Yelp
Service is excellent. Lovely atmosphere. Pricing is too high. They do not have current pricing on line unless you are on Facebook and then I am not even sure about that. I am not on Facebook. So when we went we were surprised that pricing was a good 4/5 dollars higher than what we saw on line. The steak portion for a NY Strip is 16 ounces, who needs to eat 16 ounces at once, so if you split it then the price is more reasonable. Steak sizes are too big, rib eye 22 ounces, serious, who needs that much meat at once. The prime rib comes in 3 sizes. The steak was cooked perfect, but not worth the $45.00. You get baked potato or fries, then a vegetable. If you ask for a loaded baked potato, all you get is butter and sour cream, no onion, no cheese, no bacon, so how they can consider butter and sour cream loaded is beyond me. You cannot sub a salad for the vegetable, so a salad is extra. The salmon is served with mashed potatoes, who serves mashed potatoes with fish.? The only other option, fries. It does come with the vegetable of the day, but again pay extra for a salad. No bread is served or offered. If you order any pasta dishes, avg price $28, you get nothing else, no salad, no bread. The chocolate moose was $11.00 and the serving size is enough for 3-4 people. I am glad the portions are not small, but a bit too big.
google avatar

Cheryl H.

Yelp
Such a lovely atmosphere, kind and welcoming. The Mediterranean Slaw is a fab combination of 10+ ingredients. The fries great. Pulled pork okay.

Judy H.

Yelp
As with most restaurants that specialize in a particular food, order steak at a steakhouse. Also good is Salmon, green chili verde was good but only a couple pieces of pork. Wedge salad was a beast, so huge and good. Chicken was dry.
google avatar

Yelp
What a gem! If you're are lucky enough to be anywhere in the Silver City/Santa Clara vicinity, this restaurant/bar makes the somewhat tedious journey to Pinos Altos worth every minute. Glorious old bar dating back to the 1860's. Dark heavy wood with detailing that you just don't see anymore. Enter bartenders who know how to fix a drink. Beautifully made manhattan's, a perfect vodka martini... relaxing yet? Now the food. The glorious, glorious food. The steaks are beautiful, and properly cooked. The wedge salad is a must, and you'll be ever so happy if you order anything hatch related. It's like getting a big hug!

Erik L.

Yelp
Service is crap, we waited for 35min before we got our drinks and after 2hrs our meal's finally came out to only have my wife receive a cold salmon and myself a cold steak. When we sent the orders back we figured the would re-fire the items but that was not the case, they simply through the plates away and stated fresh witch took another hour for us to receive a bit warmer meals but still not to the way we expected. The bartenders were the worst as they only cared about socializing with friends at the bar and not worrying about other customers waiting for drinks at tables, drinks we sent to wrong tables and they had no clue how to run a bar. STAY AWAY

Philippe M.

Yelp
Great service, good food if pricey, interesting place with a vintage ambiance, we will be back!

Bill L.

Yelp
This has got to be one of the worst restaurants in the supposed class of 'good' establishments I have ever visited. . The food was great, but that is all. The service is the worst. Been there a couple of times and convinced I will never step foot in that restaurant ever again. . Tried to book a wedding dinner there, but after months of trying to contact someone, they finally got back with us and said there were all reserved up. . This place doesn't deserve the credit it get at all.

Phyllis H.

Yelp
Wow! What an experience! I was on 20+ days of a road trip when I arrived in Silver City, NM, and I was hungry for a steak. When I searched Yelp, The Buckhorn Saloon & Opera House was the only restaurant that popped up. I headed out, thought I had the wrong directions, re-checked the address, and kept driving. When I saw vehicles parked side by side on both sides of the street, I knew I had made the right choice. The restaurant and every bar stool were full. I had the option of waiting an hour or more for a table, wait for a barstool to open, or ask someone with a table if I could join them. I chose option 3. Melinda and Timothy allowed me to join them at their table and gave me food suggestions. Basically, they said everything was delicious, but I might want to go with the prime rib. I took their suggestion and chose the small cut of prime rib with salad and baked potato. Excellent! The prime rib was perfectly cooked with a delicious flavor. The potato was wonderful with plenty of butter. I loved it! It would be remiss if me to not mention the atmosphere. The Buckhorn Saloon & Opera House offers an amazing experience.

Nate H.

Yelp
We had reservations my mom made way in advance and had to wait for a table anyways. Then after we ordered, we sat for almost two hours before we got our foods. My dad's salad took over an hour and came out so early he was done eating before we started. 6 of us ordered buckhorn burgers and some wanted salad, and some wanted fries. The waitress had to come back twice to verify everyone's order. The burger was OK. I am a lifelong new mexican and have to say there are way better green chile cheeseburgers out there. It sucks because my mom lived in silver city as a teenager and was really excited to come back and see the restaurant. My brother got french onion soup and it tasted like really salty beef stock without the spices that make french onion soup special. Everyone was thoroughly pissed by the time the food came, and my mom, who has never said a harsh word to a wait-staff person, was muttering curses by the time the food came. The restaurant and the bathroom were clean though. Our kids were amazing for not turning to wild animals given the ridiculous wait time. Won't go back. Laguna Burger has a way better green chile cheeseburger, and so does Lotaburger for that matter. Big old dry bun and no juiciness in the burger itself. The cheese was meh and the green chile wasn't very roasty or aromatic. Oh and the waitress brought everyone fries even after asking multiple times exactly who was wanting a side salad. I think it was her first day or something.

Beth F.

Yelp
This restaurant was recommended by the ranger at Gila Cliff Dwelling as a great place to go for interesting atmosphere and great food. The Hatch green chile chicken Alfredo and green chile stew were amazing. We also had the pork chop special - it was tasty but salty. Kerston was an excellent waitress. I would definitely come back

Yelp
Surprise! Great food, great ambiance with excellent service in historic setting! Our server was phenomenal! Pay a close attention to daily specials.

Ronda S.

Yelp
This is our 3rd visit but haven't been here for about 5 years. Happy to find we still love it! Had a drink at the bar and then was seated for dinner. French onion soup came out quickly and was very good. The main entrees took about an hour to come out, which is reason for 4 stars. I got the Asian glazed salmon which was delicious! Moist and very flavorful. Came with mashed potatoes which were very good and zucchini which I'm not a big fan of, but it was ok. My husband got the chicken chili Alfredo and it was also very good. Staff was friendly and there were quite a few of them, but apparently not in the kitchen?

Yelp
Being from the area years ago, did an overnight stay at the Bear Creek Cabins and decided to make reservations and have dinner at the Buckhorn. First of all I want to say that the food was incredible and the waitress was beyond incredible. Would have given this place 5 out of 5 stars except for a little problem they have with staff. Once we arrived we were asked by 2 separate people 3 times our name for reservations. Took about 15 minutes to seat us. Very understandable. The place was busy. Once seated it took the waitress 20 minutes to see us. Again, was observing and saw she was serving wayyy too many tables then most servers could handle. But she was fast, friendly, awesome and on her game. Would go definitely go again. Just seems like they are a little understaffed.

Yelp
It's a step back into history. Old building built to hold off Indian attacks. Very cozy dining room with fireplace and antiques on walls. You can also eat in bar where they often have live music. The steaks are very good. It's our go to place to take out of town guests and for special occasions

Yelp
The Buckhorn is a Grant County institution. No visit to Silver City is complete without an evening at this historic old saloon, particularly in the winter months with the fireplace blazing in the cozy bar. Monday open mic nights are well attended if for no other reason than few other restaurants near or in Silver City are open on Mondays. That said, however, the music at the open mic is often quite surprising since Silver City boasts an incredible amount of musical talent, many of whom sign up on the clipboard to play on Monday nights at the Buckhorn. The drinks are strong, and the food is good. Beers other than IPAs and crafts are available, and despite the strong meat presence of burgers and delicious pulled pork, there's plenty of veg for the non-meat crowd such as salads and a portobello burger among others. The desserts are gargantuan so prepare to share. Some restaurants are memorable for their food, and while the food at the Buckhorn is respectable, this restaurant and bar are memorable for the old west aesthetic and the history hanging on every wall and seeping up through every floorboard. Just go. Now. You'll see.
