Off-Centered Ale Trail: Cleveland

"It all started in a Bay Shore basement. It was the mid-1960s, and Raymond Buckland, leader of what became known as the Long Island Coven, had been collecting historical witchcraft objects, oddities, and occult paraphernalia for years. He amassed hundreds of pieces, and with shelves bursting he eventually moved into larger quarters, opening the Buckland Museum of Witchcraft and Magick. Buckland was inspired by his mentor Gerald Gardner, and the gallery has many objects originally owned by the father of “Gardnerian” Wicca. Alongside are items from the Salem Witch Trials, Egyptian funerary figurines called “ushabtis,” and artifacts owned by magicians, astrologers, fortune tellers, and pagan community elders. In addition to being a coven leader, Buckland was a busy writer and lecturer on the move, and his collection came along with him. Over the years it lived in New Hampshire, came through some legal disputes in New Orleans, and eventually ended up in storage in Columbus, Ohio. Now, with a new curator and small gallery to show it off, it has been reborn as the Buckland Gallery of Witchcraft and Magick. Although space is limited, a large portion of the collection is on display. There’s even room for the Demon in a Box, captured by Buckland in the 1970s with the help of a ceremonial magician." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Pretty fun! The tour guide, and I think also the owner of the museum, was fantastic! Witty and very friendly. There are some pretty interesting things to see there that come with interesting stories. The gift shop was really cool and the lady who checked me out was super sweet. Highly recommend visiting this place if you're in Cleveland!

My friends & I were in Cleveland for the weekend and stumbled upon this place the night before deciding to stop in and what a find! Steven was super knowledgeable and explanatory of everything in the collection, and the collection was incredible. We took our time looking around and talking through some of the most interesting pieces to our personal tastes and Steven helped us better understand all of them. We all agreed we’d come back without a question - and the shop was awesome to boot! We did book our tickets in advance and it was VERY smooth. Thanks for the awesome experience!

Oh my Goddess😊 we so enjoyed this stop on our 3 day Cleveland getaway! Steve was so cool. The collection was amazing. The vibe was just such a delight. Tucked away amidst everyday urban life lies this little gem filled with history and magic. We thoroughly enjoyed it👍

I specifically requested to visit this place for my birthday weekend because I love all things spooky/odd. The crystals were a little pricey but I’m not one to complain. Our guide for the museum area was awesome! Super funny, knowledgeable, and patient. He also took really awesome pictures of my fiancée and I at the end of our tour :). Awesome selection of crystals. You can tell the dude running the tour of the museum is passionate about what he does. Super excited to see what else comes of the place as time goes on! He also gave me a super dope pin after I mentioned it was my birthday which was so nice of him!

Google
It was amazing!! My daughter and I went 2 weeks ago to see the museum. It starts with a small talk about the history of Wicca and then as you walk through the rooms they come in to speak about some of the artifacts in the cases. There is also a store where you can buy their tee-shirts, crystals, and other witchy things. We went back today to purchase some of the things we wanted from the last visit!! It was awesome, thank you!!!

Google
Visited for my birthday and it was the best way to spend it! This place is amazing a very amazing curated museum of stunning Witchcraft and Ceremonial Magick history from past to present. Was really impressed you gave Damien a spot on the wall, he deserves it. Really awesome gift shop with new and used rare occult books that are priced to sell. Love, love, loved it! The ladies working did an amazing job even for her first day of tours she did a fantastic job. I only wish I could have met the owner and that I lived closer to visit more or work there too. Seriously my dream job!

Google
What an awesome experience! The tour definitely exceeded our expectations. The museum director was funny and had a slew of great stories to share. Seeing the connections among so many occultists and hearing their back stories was fascinating. There were a ton of interesting artifacts and memorabilia packed in one large room. I'm just sad we could only stay an hour before having to get back on the road. We will definitely come again next time we're in Cleveland! Also, the gift shop rules so bring some bread to spend!

Google
This place is amazing! i’ve lived in cleveland my whole life and never knew it was here and as an aspiring witch, it was an amazing experience. I’m so glad me and my husband decided to check it out. Our tour guide was incredible from the moment we walked in we felt extremely welcomed and the positive vibes. He explained everything amazingly and answered all questions. the shop in the front of the store was also really cute and fairly priced. this place was worth every penny and we will be returning!

Yelp
ETA: after posting Steven reached out directly to apologize that my review did not meet 5 stars. As I explained to him, my ONLY reason for 4 over 5 stars was to include my son's experience as well (read full review below). As a history nerd and someone who's dabbled in Magic (though perhaps not enough to consider myself a witch), I LOVED THIS MUSEUM! Our guide -Steven (not sure if with a 'v' or 'oh')- was a blast. The knowledge he had to share was engaging and memorable. For anyone with a genuine interest into magic and culture of witches, this was an incredible stop. My son (9) did lose interest within about 30 minutes but I could have studied all the relics for hours. Whether real or placebo, I felt energy shifts throughout the museum while studying various artifacts. The overall energy of the museum in its entirety was fascinating and felt so comforting and safe despite some mildly uncomfortable interactions across the street before our arrival time. I was pleased that there was free parking behind the building. I sincerely hope to make a return trip one day with a lot more spending money for the gift shop!

Yelp
Went when they had pictures with the thing I'm not able to spell. All the people were friendly and so helpful. They knew what they have and other similar places in Cleveland too. The museum does have a tiny gift shop in front
google avatar

Joseph J.

Yelp
Highly recommended this. The owner will take you on a tour of rather small things but the stories make them feel larger than life and true stories with artifacts. Very nice and clean place the gift shop was awesome had cool stuff

Yelp
Great little shop and unique museum experience. We really enjoyed learning about the history of witchcraft in the US.

Yelp
The staff were very welcoming and friendly, but that's about all I can say that's positive. The temperature inside of this establishment was almost as cold inside as it was outside, which is awful for December weather. I had to put my gloves back on while inside. Many of the items seemed like randomly placed objects from a garage sale or from some weekend antique shopping. Those were just the items at the front. As you walked to the back of the shop there were many other items on display that seemed rather random and out of place: Alien figurines from the movie Alien, a pile of staffs grouped together with no documentation about what, where or whose, and some figurines that literally had something to the effect of "one of these was owned by practitioner." (Seriously, you thought that was a professional way to label items from La Santa Muerte..." The cabinets were so misplaced that a lot of the items could not be viewed well without straining your neck and worrying about bumping into another item. A lot of the items on the walls had very little to no description about what, where, or whose, AGAIN. THE SETUP AND DISPLAY APPEARS TO BE SITUATED BY SOMEONE WHO FOUND BOXES OF THEIR LATE GRANDMOTHER'S RANDOM COLLECTIONS. The male tour guide seemed more excited about a papier-mâché mask that he had constructed than the actual other museum pieces. It resembles a poorly made Minotaur mask. Also, that repetitive mustache twirl that left the mustache uneven was very off putting from the tour guide.

Yelp
If you love interesting off-the-beat-and-path places to visit, definitely take the hour to come here! Interesting collection and enjoyable history of how Wiccan came to the US. Steven blessed me with a beautiful stone to bring with me to my appointments at Cleveland Clinic which was very kind!

Yelp
Abracadabra, hocus-pocus, ala-kaZAM! Focus your energy, use your mind power ......and create the coolest museum in Cleveland, Ohio......aaaand...... ....SHAZAM! .....So here it is. This small gem is a must-visit if you even have just a little bit of interest or curiosity in witchcraft, Wicca, or even just paganism. Raymond Buckland was a high priest, and once upon a time in a spiral-bound notebook he authored the first version of "The Complete Book of Witchcraft". It all began at a young age when he got a Ouija board, developed an interest in spiritualism, and presto! Ray studied under Gerald Garner, who was instrumental in bringing the Contemporary Wiccan religion to public attention, writing some of its definitive religious texts. Steven, the museum Curator is extremely interesting and knowledgeable. His collection is eclectic, interesting, organized, and well-displayed. He makes great use of a small space, and I really appreciated the organization and set up, as well as the variety of items on display. There is a demon housed in a box in the corner. I forgot to ask his name at the end of my visit. Due to an unfortunate incident, after a child got the demon all riled up yelling his name, the demon got some revenge on the child. Said child vomited all over the museum. Since then, Steven doesn't tell anyone the demon's name until after their visit is over. Wise. Reasonable admission fee. Guided tour. And then some time to wander and take photos. I left with a tshirt and also a sticker for my collection of cool places I've visited. Steven told me that people have said "you should take this collection to Salem." He disagreed and so do I. The space here is perfect for it, and in Salem, I'm afraid it would get swallowed up by all the other Witch-related attractions. Northeast Ohio is the perfect spot. We also had a nice conversation about other similarly cool collections. There is apparently one in Iceland, a few hours outside of Reykjavik. I have been traveling to Iceland for work, and if it is all possible, I am going to try to make an effort to go. Interesting stuff. I'll post a few photos, but I don't want to spoil it for anyone. Wanna know more? Have your demons call my demons.

Yelp
I had a great time walking around and chatting with the owner. Parking was a little difficult to find, but I popped in and asked and they were really helpful. I spent a little over an hour walking around and reading. I was a solo traveler and I felt safe in this area.

Yelp
10/10 experience. The owners are kind, funny, and so knowledgeable. Would recommend for all walks of life

Aimee T.

Yelp
Cute shop and the museum would be great if the tour guide was optional. I'm all for being excited about your collection but don't hold people hostage for 20 minutes while you throw names around of people we have no idea who they are. Crystal ball, beautiful but I don't care if it was Carol Olson's and that she got it from Sissi von trap who was a High Priestess in Calcutta or whatever it was....

Hanna C.

Yelp
Love love love the Buckland museum and shop. Highly recommend and will definitely be back!

Yelp
Came here with a bachelorette party, Steven was very informative and not overbearing at all. We all saw some crazy sh*t in the scrying mirrors. 10/10

Yelp
Found out about this place from Atlas Obscura, and it sounded fascinating, and it was.  Well worth the trip if you have any interest at all in magick, the occult, or witchcraft.  Steven, the curator and tour guide, was great, sharing many stories, and happy to chat about whatever.  Check it out!

Yelp
Me and some friends came here while on a trip to Ohio. We did the tour and then walked around the gift shop. We spent about an hour and a half here. We all really enjoyed the tour and the little collection of items they had here. We also purchased some crystals and other small items. I would recommend this place even if you aren't super into witchcraft. It was a unique and interesting experience.

Yelp
I've lived in northeast Ohio for most of my life and I'm so sad to only now be learning about the Buckland museum. It's tiny, but mighty! I absolutely loved the curators and the exhibits were really fun to learn about. There's a lot of great knowledge and history crammed in there! Definitely check it out.

Yelp
We had a reservation to tour the museum on April 28, joining a very small group. Steven was delightful and knowledgeable. We all made interesting connections through art, music, and the history of the occult. I've never seen a carved mandrake root-- couldn't help thinking of John Donne's poem, "Go and Catch a Falling Star." They sell many interesting things and have a nice selection of stones/ gemstones, with good explanations of their powers. We all enjoyed our visit thoroughly.

Yelp
This was such a great experience! Of course one is never sure what you will walk into when making a reservation for a tour at a "Museum of Witchcraft & Magick". It was everything and more than I expected. The whole experience was augmented by Steven's spectacular oration. He is most definitely a gifted bard of the witching world. The museum was great as well. It is set up in sections that you can roam freely though. Make sure you ask Steven if you have a question about something, he is very accommodating and seems to genuinely enjoy sharing his knowledge. Make sure to take a good look in the teacup room, there are some great ones, my favorite, the divination teacup commemorating a visit of the King and Queen of England to Canada (now my days and nights will be forever spent scouring eBay for my prize). My daughter left wanting to learn the art of tea leaf reading (Tasseography) and palm reading (palmistry). She is a 4th grader in love with the Harry Potter series and this museum did not disappoint! There is a special item in the museum that all H.P. fans will love ! You'll have to buy a ticket to find out what it is though ! We left with a hand drawn zine depicting different tombstone symbols and their meanings, which was kismet because we had planned to go to Lake View Cemetery the next day to see Harvey Pekar's grave and then to wander to a few other famous Clevelanders. We also left with a great palmistry beginners guide with just enough info for a 4th grader to wrap her head around and hopefully make this momma some money plying her trade to unsuspecting family members on our trip across the Midwest. Seriously, buy a ticket it was super cool. If you regret it, there is probably something wrong with you.

Yelp
Small and meaningful. Definitely a fun afternoon! I learned A lot. I guess I was thinking it would be dark and creepy but it wasn't at all.

Yelp
How cool is this?! If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend stopping at the Buckland Museum of Witchcraft and Magick. I also recommend doing the museum portion. There's a very nominal admission fee and absolutely worth it, in my opinion. There's an amazing collection of artifacts from many leaders of the Pagan community. My particular favorite is a mandrake root that's over 200 years old! Steven, the owner/curator, is incredibly knowledgeable and personable! He had so many fun facts and personal anecdotes. The shop is also pretty great - quite a collection of various books and crystals. I thought the prices were very reasonable. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here! If you have even the slightest interest or curiosity in magic or the occult, come here with an open mind! You'll be glad you did. I debated whether or not to include this part of my review - I don't want it to reflect poorly on the museum itself or staff. After thinking about it, I decided if anything - it shows how wonderful this place and staff is and how much they care about their customers: While I was there, a rude and not-so-friendly character walked into the store. Steven asked him to leave, and Steven was incredibly apologetic - and it wasn't even his fault! He went above and beyond and personally escorted me to my car to ensure I wouldn't be hassled, just in case the person was lingering around. I was definitely blown away by my experience!

Yelp
Neat little shop with a back room of unique items, curios and historical things you can hear about during a tour. Host was great and enjoyed the tour and shop.

Yelp
Oh boy. A shop that says it's a "Museum of Witchcraft & Magick". How good could it be, but my companion wanted to see it. I had seem too many places like this to think it would be any good. I was very, very wrong. From they nice bookshop in the front, to the pleasant and knowledgeable staff, and then the museum ($7 admission, which was much less than what I thought it would be) and tour from the owner, it was a really great high point of out trip to Cleveland. Great items, all explained, and this lace has some real connections with Raymond Buckland. They even had some relics that once belonged to Allister Crowley. Now, be advised. The museum is small. Its the back area of a small storefront. But what it lacks in size it makes up for in quality of their exhibits and most importantly, if you are not an expert or even very knowledgeable in these things (like me) they will happily talk to you and explain them without making you feel foolish or stupid. Next time we are in Cleveland, we are going back. Also - Check out their t-shirts that glow in the dark!

Yelp
Truly enjoyed my visit today. Been hearing so much about the museum that my family had to go see it. It lives up to expectations and then some! The owner Steve is a great tour guide and super cool and friendly. He couldn't have been any nicer and more informative . Great collection and a really cool gift shop also. My family will be back again to check out the museum again. Really, it's one of the coolest things in Cleveland.

Yelp
This is a cool little side diversion for an afternoon. You can be totally into the Wicca life or just be looking for an interesting afternoon. It only takes about an hour to go through the whole place. They have a shop with a lot of interesting resources and items if you want to explore further. The current exhibit is Mortensons photography. Very interesting from both the witchcraft and artistic perspective. Andel Adams called this guy the "AntiChrist"! His work is unique. Definitely worth looking at. The rest of the museum is filled with a life's collection of memorabilia. Buckland was a practicing Wiccan and has many ceremonial objects on display. Some were owned by Alesteir Crowley, which I found pretty cool. Others are just cute kitschy objects or movie/ music tributes to the occult. You can take it all as seriously as you like, or not at all. Still, it's an enjoyable diversion. Street parking, this is their new location and open much more accessible hours.

Yelp
So, I'm a fan of all things paranormal and unusual, so a chance to see this small but impressive display of artifacts and hear the stories of the curators, Mr. Steven Intermill and Ms. Jillian Slane, who, from the moment I walked in, were kind, thoughtful and full of great information. The Museum is based on one of America's Witchcraft pioneers, the late Raymond Buckland, whose many books on the study of The Craft are a staple to this day. The stories I heard about him, his wife and some of his escapades were wonderful. The Museum is now in its own, independent location, and they have many books for sale as well as other items like jewelry, candles and such. Parking is street based, and there is a nominal 5 dollar fee to see this little treasure trove. BTW, if you get a chance, ask about a certain box that sits, all alone and illuminated, in the back of the shop...just don't call it by NAME:) So, if you want to visit a slice of The World of the Occult, Just fly on by the Buckland Gallery!

Yelp
Interesting experience. I enjoyed the tour, however it was really difficult for me to hear between the mask and the music playing so I felt like I missed a lot of what was even said. There's a lot of cool, old druid artifacts, as well as creepy stories to go with many things displayed. Tour was roughly 30-40 minutes. I'm sure you could get a story behind every piece in there to make your experience even longer. Hope they expand in the future and possibly in a better location. The book section was probably my favorite, as there are lots of old and new books for sale.

Yelp
Found this museum on Trip Advisor and it was listed as one of the top museums in Cleveland, so we decided to stop in on our way back home to Columbus. It's a small establishment, with souvenirs, books, and gifts for sale in the front section, the museum located in the rear. The charge to enter was reasonable at $5 each and there was lots to see, despite it being a small museum. The owner gave us a detailed introduction to the collection and began a brief tour that seemed to stop short. I'm not sure if he got sidetracked by other patrons, or if he meant to leave us hanging, but we were left on our own to view the rest of the artifacts. Both of the owners were friendly and helpful and happy to answer our questions. I would have preferred a longer tour, but between the introduction and the information gathered from answering our questions, I feel as though we got our $5 worth.

Yelp
A great assortment of artifacts and memorabilia ruined by an owner who couldn't care less. The small museum is home to amazing and interesting items but comes off as incredibly insulting to anyone of the wiccan faith mostly because the space is also decorated with cheap hacky Halloween decorations. Notice in one of the pictures I posted the glass display case of artifacts that also houses a Lisa Simpson figure and Troll doll in Halloween witch outfits. Be sure not to miss the dollar store witch mask! The worst and most insulting is the owner himself. At some point during the "tour" (the most exciting part was that once the owner drove down a dead end road and emailed someone at a hotmail account!) the owner told us that "This stuff is cool but I'm not really superstitious. I mean, most wiccans I've met can't really keep it together, y'know?" My wife and I left immediately after such a flippant insult. In the end this is a great selection of artifacts wasted by a rude and insulting person just trying to make a quick buck.

Yelp
A must go! My sisters and I road tripped to Cleveland from Chicago Memorial Day weekend. Although the museum was technically closed today, my sister called in and Steve gladly opened his doors to us! He was very friendly and knowledgeable. He gave us a thorough tour of the place and we sure learned a lot! There is a creepy small box encircled in salt that houses a demon. Check it out! You can also purchase crystals, books, postcards, jewelry, etc.

Yelp
Our recent visit to the Buckland Museum of Witchcraft and Magic was life changing. I'd always dabbled in the occult and pagan rituals but after spending time with the museum's curator Steven, who is so incredibly charming and engaging, I really feel ready to achieve a higher level of spiritual enlightenment. The artifacts are both rich in history and magical significance, I felt tingling just being in proximity to them. Each visit to the museum (this is our 4th) brings new revelations. Definitely the worth the visit and the gift shop has some very high quality and unique items!!

Autumn C.

Yelp
Felt heavy negative vibes as soon as I walked in. Tour guide seemed very enthusiastic and knowledgeable though

Yelp
I'm not sure how I've missed this gem in the decade plus that I've lived in the area, but am so happy I know about it now. A visiting friend was researching things to do in Cleveland. We've, over the years, visited pretty much all of the well known attractions. She came across the Buckland Museum of Witchcraft & Magick and scheduled a tour for today. The owner, Steven, was wonderful. Very engaging, knowledgeable and injected just the right amount of humor into his tour. I really didn't expect to take a full hour and a half to explore the museum, as it isn't the largest setup, but the time flew by. The collection is extensive and varied. Steven was on hand to answer any questions we had or to point out some of the more interesting pieces. The bookstore / gift shop is well curated. I will definitely be adding the museum to my rotation of attractions to introduce folks to!
google avatar

Yelp
Interesting museum with a delightful staff that run the place. $5/pp for a tour of the stuff they have. For some reason, expected it to be a little bit bigger. Museum is the size of a small studio apartment.
google avatar

Ekaterina F.

Yelp
It is a must-see if you are interested in learning more about the rich history of American spirituality. I found the collection fascinating! Steven is a highly knowledgeable guide with genuine enthusiasm and a great sense of humor, and overall just a pleasure to talk with! If I visit Cleveland again, I will stop by again and save some space in my luggage for a book or two. His little collection is tasteful and offers good variety. Highly recommended!

Yelp
My partner and I were driving from Chicago to DC and decided to stop in Cleveland for the night. We stumbled upon Buckland's Gallery when looking for things to do in town. It looked like it wasn't open but there were tours available by appointment. We called the night before and set up a tour for just $5! Extremely responsive off the bat. We weren't expecting much considering the low cost, and when we walked in it was very clearly a small space. We thought it's no big deal, just a sweet lil thing to do before hitting the road. But let me tell you that the collection and the owner - Steve - were SUCH a treat. The collection was fascinating and Steven was funny, thoughtful, and full of facts! The selection of books was small but we were able to find 3 books we were really excited about. The visit was truly the highlight of our Christmas vacation. What a joy.

Ani O.

Yelp
Love the Museum! The History under one roof. The owner is devoted and has put a beautiful collection together. Very special.

Alex R.

Yelp
A really fabulous place. The museum itself is narrow but deep in its focus--this is not all magick and all witchcraft, but a particular lineage. With that in mind, though, the artifacts, mood, and tour were all really informative and enjoyable. The host/owner is knowledgeable and canny: not a huckster or a dogmatic, but someone with some real perspective and a bit of charm. We talked for an hour after the tour. The book selection is varied and large: a true grab-bag in the best way. Idiosyncratic, inviting, and full of quirks and crannies. Reward your curiosity.

Eva D.

Yelp
It's so cool that they carried on the work of 2 generations of people to share what is known about witchcraft with the world and keep it from going extinct. Everyone who works there has such a wealth of knowledge about various interesting subjects along with witchcraft. The collection is impressive, interesting, and nicely displayed. The gift shop has an awesome selection of crystals, books, and fun stuff. They had lots of great titles in their used book section as well. I kind of didn't want to pay for a tour of the place but got swept into it with friends, and it was so totally worth it!

Yelp
Full disclosure: I've only seen some of these artifacts at the owners' home. Needless to say, Steven and Jillian are both very well versed in the 'witchy arts' and have been studying the esoteric for a long, long time. They happened upon the Buckland collection, and as they're both museum purveyors at their "day jobs", they were able to pitch the museum idea to the collection owners. These artifacts shouldn't be hidden away; they should be seen by the world at large! And the collection owners agreed. The items were carefully cataloged and now are rotated through the quaint Tremont location. So there ya have it: The Buckland Gallery of Witchcraft & Magick. This little museum is Steven's life-long dream. People from around the world have been 'popping in' and I am over the moon about this. If you find yourself in Cleveland, it's worth a visit when you're eating and drinking near Tremont. Eat. Drink. Magick. Repeat.

Yelp
The museum was wonderful and there was so much to look at. Our Guide, the owner, was extremely knowledgeable and super helpful. When we first went in he was a bit rude as I am not from here so the mask regulations are different where I live and not required in most places, when I went up to the door it said masks required but I had forgotten mine in the car so I went in and asked if he had one or if they had one I could buy and I would be happy to buy one and he lectured me and was extremely rude about the situation and made continuous comments about it despite me apologizing numerous times. So it would have been a 5/5 if not for that.

Yelp
The guy working was very knowledgeable and in to it. Many cool things to look at and even shop for. It's fun for a one time stop, especially is this is your type of thing. Something different and fun for all.

Yelp
A small, but fun collection of esoterica. Crowley is well-represented. The owners/docents are very personable and full of entertaining stories. We even got to see the not-yet-on-display Goya-style goat's head in the back room! I was maybe most impressed with the collection of books. They had everything from grimoires to a program from this circus that I saw as a kid which starred a "real" unicorn. Given the price, this is well worth a detour.

Yelp
I love the authenticity of this place! I think it is very thoughtful and inclusive to place Halloween images next to the well curated historical artifacts since it is the modern vernacular for how our current society views a witch. Thanks so much to the owner for taking the time to come down and open the shop and share his stories.

Yelp
Go here, it's great. The owner gave me a customized tour, took me all around the museum and indulged me in decadent stories of witchcraft and magick. You can't call yourself a witch or warlock if you live within 300 miles of here and you haven't yet visited.
