How to See the Northern Lights in Iceland

"A few hours' drive from Reykjavik is the Snaefellsnes peninsula, a wild area with zero light pollution and excellent wilderness accommodations. The top choice is the luxury Budir Hotel near Budakirkja, an iconic black church, but the Guesthouse Hof is also close by." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Pictures can't describe how cinematic this church is. It's a must stop on The Snaefellsnes peninsula. Also, there is a beautiful tan beach behind the church, down a hill and a waterfall across the road. It's truly a religious experience.

Absolutely one of the most idealistic places! Beautiful old historic church, with the most gorgeous surrounding scenery. Almost too perfect... it's exactly as pictured in so many Photos. Off the bucket list...a small graveyard is behind this church. Sure makes for some amazing photographs.

A black painted church in a beautiful landscape. You can’t get inside the church (July 1st week, 2025). I wouldn’t add it to the itinerary just to see this church unless you are in the area exploring other places.

Búðakirkja is hauntingly beautiful. 🖤 This tiny black church set against vast lava fields and mountains is both serene and dramatic. A peaceful stop with loads of photo charm, simple, striking, unforgettable.

Great spot in the middle of nowhere, right by the beach. It’s just a short drive from the main road and you can park right next to the church. Beside it there’s a small cemetery, so you get a unique view of the seaside or the mountains. The only downside is that it can get quite crowded, as even tour buses stop here.

A beautiful church with a unique look, unlike the usual ones you see. The surroundings are stunning too. I can only imagine how magical it must look in winter with the aurora, though it’s already lovely in summer.

The Black Church of Búðir is a very unique and picturesque spot. Its simple black-and-white design stands out beautifully against the dramatic Icelandic landscape. It’s a great place for photos and has a peaceful, almost mystical atmosphere. However, the church itself is quite small and usually closed, so the visit is more about the outside view than exploring the inside. Still, definitely worth a stop if you are traveling around Snæfellsnes.
