The 25 Best Things to Do in Budapest (Updated 2025)

"I recommend the Budapest History Museum for a deep dive into the city's 2,000-year past: it spans four floors in Buda Castle, offers amazing views across the city, and the audio guide is well worth the extra cost for the supplemental information." - Matthew Kepnes

Visiting Budapest: 3 - 4 Day Suggested Itinerary (Updated 2025)

"Housed across four floors of Buda Castle, this museum gives a comprehensive overview of the city’s entire history—from prehistoric times to the present—includes 15th-century rooms such as the old cellar you can explore, offers great views across town, and has free admission with the Budapest Card (open Tue–Sun 10am–6pm)." - Matthew Kepnes

A seriously underrated museum! I think they have to market it better because there is so much to see around the Buda castle that people don't know where to start and where to enter. We paid around 5 euros (student/youth ticket) and got to see 3 floors of amazing exhibitions. We spent almost 3 hours there, but we would spend even more if we read every item description! The ground floor has a big art exhibition ("An Italian in Hungary") and a beautiful courtyard with a glass ceiling. The first floor has the famous restaurated St. Stephens Hall and an enourmos exhibition about the history of Budapest with many interesting sections (architecture, politics, war, culture, bathing culture, theater, entertainment, furniture etc.). The lower floor has many sculptures, stone pieces, the Gothic room and the Chapel! Everything is displayed really well, and there's a lot of interactive parts which are marked with a hand symbol. It's clean and quiet. There are nice toilets on each floor. The souvenir shop inside by the entrance is great, many cool pins and keychains with motifs from tiles in St. Stephens Hall, and the prices are fair. There's a cool cafe in the room next to it also! So worth the time and money!

I liked the museum, is very large and has so many exhibitions, some are really engaging, other not much. St Stephen hall reproduction is a must, is so beautiful and the audioguide is great. If you have little time I recommend to see only the st Stephen hall, and see the basement rooms if possible. An unique view of what was inside the castle and underground. The ticket price is fine, less than other attractions of the city that are too expensive already. I payed 2500 ft for a student ticket. And I spend like 3 hours in the museum.

Spent a long time discovering this Jewel of a museum. Lots of floors and Great presentation about the history and life of the city below. Interesting and not too busy. Exhibits were well spaced with dual language signs. They unclude fine art, antiquities with the banner tapestry,, a room full of maps and items showing the castle and city origins, the areas of the medieval castle with chapel, vaulted cistern and workrooms. Plus the renovated room of Stephen Hall for a small extra fee with it's ornate interior.

I liked this museum. There is a ton of information and it can be overwhelming. The front desk staff were very nice and spoke English. Start on the top floor for more recent history is my advice. The whole castle area is incredible and offers great views of the city and Danube River!

Great museum - quite large and on multiple floors so I skipped a fair bit of the the 20th century parts (it was roughly chronological). The history of the castle, Budapest, and Hungary is covered in different sections of the museum. Highlights included: - The cellars & explanation of how the water supply to Buda Castle was developed over time. - The room with unfinished Gothic sculptures from a workshop that was uncovered - really really fascinating. - The Anjou tapestry - it was thrilling to read about how this medieval tapestry was discovered covered in mud in a disused well - loved it! Well worth a visit.

I had a wonderful experience coming here on a Monday when many other attractions are closed. I used my Buda Card to use public transport on the way to and from and for admission into the museum itself. What an amazing and fascinating experience! Good English signage and thousands of years to look back on in contemplation.

Even without a ticket, you can climb the hill and take in the beautiful views. The museum is included with the Budapest Tourist pass (as is the National Gallery and the Libraries) or you can pay for each separately. St Stephen Hall is apparently a big attraction for tourists, but I much preferred the exhibitions about the history of the area. I found the information about the region's geography and many cultural influenced interesting. I enjoyed their collection of artifacts from prehistory, the Roman era, the Medieval period, Ottoman rule, and up to present day. I imagine it would also be a good spot for kids - there's a number of educational games that I (a full grown adult) loved playing.
