I had a wonderful experience coming here on a Monday when many other attractions are closed. I used my Buda Card to use public transport on the way to and from and for admission into the museum itself. What an amazing and fascinating experience! Good English signage and thousands of years to look back on in contemplation.

Beautiful building, had time for just the History Museum. Notice that a number of museums in EU has their lighting at a dusk, dim level. It was difficult to make out features in paintings or artifacts displayed. This History museum has lots displayed, but was a bit disjointed as there was not exactly a ‘flow’ of when Hungary was founded (?), and the events that shaped it. Overall, I enjoyed the exterior more than the interior.

Budapest castle is massive with so much to do but the history museum was well worth it. As students the value is outstanding. Huge museum with the beautiful St. Stephen’s room which is worth the extra cost on the ticket. Great coverage of the castle’s medieval history as well. They also had a whole wing covering the history of Budapest in a timeline fashion. Overall great value.

A bit of a steep climb up via some steps. Once you're up, you're up, though. It was freezing on the day that we visited, so take a coat as there is not much shelter. A lot of rebuilding work is going on at the moment, and some areas were closed off due to the various visitors. Maps show where toilets are located. One in the busiest part charges the rest where free to use. A few cafes and restaurants around the area.

Visited the museum in early fall, the size of the castle where the museum and Hungarian art galleries are in covers a massive size of ground. The entire architecture is gorgeous and feelslike a maze , with various path connecting different parts of the castle with constant ups and downs. Some stairs can lead to a locked metal door. The view surrounding the castle is breathtaking. It was such a beautiful ground to walk around and enjoy the Hungarian historical architecture, and arts. Staff working inside the museum and art gallery are very friendly. Entrance fee is also reasonable. There are a good amount of tourist on the castle ground, but given the massive size of the area it doesn’t feel very crowded and there was no line to get into the museum. It was a great experience and definitely recommend to visit.

Myself, my husband, daughter, son-in-law and son-in-law’s parents and grandmother all traveled to Budapest over Christmas 2024. After we arrived, we learned that Budapest was the combined city of Buda and Pest, becoming Budapest in 1873. Our daughter, who has traveled extensively, thought that Budapest was one of the most beautiful and best laid out cities in Europe. After walking around Budapest and exploring, we all decided to visit the most famous area of Budapest – Castle Hill, where Buda Castle sits, overlooking the Danube River and Pest, on the north side. Not surprisingly, Buda Castle is a World Heritage Site. From Castle Hill, you have an expansive view of Pest on the north bank and the Chain Bridge, leading to it from Buda Castle. Buda Castle (a historical Royal Palace of Hungarian Kings) is a monolithic structure that includes a very expansive area. The Castle has had many iterations that go back as far as the 14th century, being re-built from invasions and wars over the following centuries; improvements continue to the present time. Buda Castle now contains the restored Royal Chapel and Gothic Hall, the Budapest History Museum, the Hungarian National Gallery and National Library. We spent a considerable amount of time in the History Museum and did not leave until closing time. There is a majestic courtyard that surrounds the entrance to Buda Castle, reminiscent of European Abbies and Monasteries. Outside of the main courtyard is a forecourt that holds the Matthias Fountain, depicting a Royal hunting party that includes King Matthias holding a dead stag, hunting dogs, a game keeper and shield bearer. Atop a column outside Buda Castle sits an enormous, mythological Turul Bird, a national symbol of Hungarians and their Defense Forces. Matthias Church, used for coronations, with its beautiful spire sits nearby. The National Gallery and Historical Museum are two of the most beautiful museums that I have ever visited. These well-kept museums are filled with the rich history of the country. My family and myself truly enjoyed visiting Buda Castle and its surrounds. After we left, the view from the Castle grounds, looking down on the other side of Budapest, as the sun set was simply breath-taking. The people that work at Buda Castle are exceptional! Late at night, after I had visited the Castle, I realized that my heirloom diamond necklace that had been given to me by my late mother-in-law, was missing. I desperately searched everywhere and contacted every place I visited that day. The next day, just before getting on an airplane to leave the country, I received an email response from the museum. They kindly informed me that my necklace had been found in the museum. Arrangements have been made to return it to me, stateside. It truly was a miracle and blessing! I cannot thank the security and administrative staff enough for finding and making efforts to return my necklace.

This is a great museum if you want to learn more about Hungary from its very beginning to more recent eras. There are enough exhibits to keep you busy for 3-4 hours. We bought the combo ticket with St Stephan’s hall which had a couple bits of history and the actual hall itself is an extremely ornate but small room. Throughout the museum there are also some hands-on activities. We made it through in 2 hours and were walking quickly through the last few floors. We stopped for beers and a snack at the outdoor Pavillion bar/beer garden which was really cute and had a nice view. The entrance to the museum is a little hidden so we just stopped in the national galley entrance and asked directions. We went on a Friday and it wasn’t very busy.

What a fascinating museum! Often overlooked but it gives the visitor a rich historical experience and one learns of the kings of Hungary and several prominent families over the centuries. King Béla, the Holy Roman emperors and more. The entrance fee is little and worth the money! Just follow the arrows at the castle complex as the museum is not too easy to find. Would recommend visiting!
