Visited the Buddha Dordenma statue (Buddha Point) in Thimphu in early 2026 during my Bhutan trip. The massive 51-meter golden Buddha sitting atop the hill is truly impressive from afar—you can spot it gleaming from many parts of the city. Up close, the scale is overwhelming, and the panoramic views over Thimphu Valley and the surrounding mountains are breathtaking, especially on a clear day.
We drove up the short road from the city center (about 20 minutes), parked easily, and walked around the platform. Inside the base, the meditation hall with thousands of smaller gilded Buddha statues (over 125,000 in total!) is ornate and peaceful, with beautiful murals and a serene atmosphere. No photos allowed inside, which helps maintain the calm.
That said, it can get quite crowded with tour groups, and the wind up there is strong—bring a jacket. The site feels a bit touristy at times, with souvenir stalls nearby, and while the statue is grand, the experience is more about the views and photo ops than deep spirituality compared to quieter monasteries.
It’s a solid highlight in Thimphu and worth the visit for the iconic sight and scenery, but not the most profound spot in Bhutan. Good for a quick stop if you’re in the capital!
