Today, Bugis Street is part of the cluster of CapitaLand’s Bugis Junction & Bugis+ shopping hub. Catering to the lower end of the fashion spectrum similar to HDB markets, it remains a tourist magnet for its affordable fashion and ladies grooming outlets.
During the early years of newly independent Singapore 🇸🇬, Bugis Street became globally famous in the post-war years for its vibrant, risqué nightlife, known especially for the transvestite scene, where “ah kuas” socialized, performed, and interacted with tourists and servicemen. At its peak, it was Asia’s most talked-about nightlife district, attracting celebrities, sailors, and backpackers, rivalling Patpong in Bangkok.
However, moving on with times, the Singapore Government redeveloped the whole area as part of new MRT in the 1980s. The iconic open-air night scene was dismantled and replaced with Bugis Junction, a modern shopping and office complex.
