Building 92

Great space with what seems like great exhibits. Unfortunately, the 2nd and 3rd floor doors were locked on Sunday, 11.30.25 at 2pm. When I asked the front desk uf the rest of the museum was closed on weekends, he said "I guess so, probably," then proceeded to slouch back in his chair. Please change you hours to say thay 2/3rds if the museum is closed on Sundays. This particular guard seemed disoriented by my visit with my 2 toddlers. Firstly, when we arrived, he looked like we woke him up. He asked "can I help you", but in a tone that sounded like he wasn't sure why we there. I asked if it was a museum, and he confirmed. Then he asked for ID. The gentleman, while wearing his glasses, pulled out a maginfine glass and examined my ID for an extended period of time. As a Blackman, who was already taken aback by what felt like a suspicious greeting, it felt uncomfortable (though of course it's possible that security guards are now using magnifine glasses to read IDs, on top of corrective lenses). He told us to enjoy, then slouched back in his chair. I wouldn't recommend visiting this place on weekends, and would caution men of color from attending unless you feel secure in the cultural competency of staff here. It's one and done for me

A real hidden gem of a museum that is FREE to the public. This showcases the Brooklyn Navy Yard's Past, Present, and Future vision. The expertly crafted exhibits are very cohesive and showcase a variety of different stories and perspectives. The historical exhibits are very detailed with good 3D models to allow you to zoom in to the past. Highly highly recommend checking this out if you're nearby.

I can't wait until this place opens back up again. Our last visit was so much fun and had a lot of great information about the U.S. Navy! We were just fascinated by everything on exhibit and the story behind the building and the entire Brooklyn Navy Yard. A must-see for any U.S. or Navy history fan.

I stumbled upon the museum while walking around the neighborhood. They really did a good job of presenting the story of the Brooklyn Navy Yard and what the place was before it rose to prominence as an important shipyard, something I had very little knowledge of prior to my visit. It's a story that spans four centuries and uncannily mirrors New York City's own story of success, decline, and re-emergence. Come visit to find out more! Allot two hours to see all exhibits at a comfortable pace. The museum is housed in a modern, eco-friendly building. Admission is FREE. The museum employees are very friendly and engaging.

Nice facilities but hard to navigate, even harder to find parking. Give yourself an additional 15 minutes. Use the Clinton Avenue gate to enter.

An interesting museum, knowing nothing of the ship yards, I was interested to visit. I was able to get just the amount of information I wanted quickly, and with no admission charge. I had my daughter in a stroller, and universal access is lacking. The only way up to the entrance is around the side, where a wheelchair lift is located. The path to the lift is through coarse crushed rock which really bogged down the wheels. This would be a challenge for those in wheelchairs as well.

This museum is such a hidden gem. I loved the exhibition layout where you walk from floor to floor and discover the different decades and wars of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. There are unique interactive items in the exhibition and they are expertly explained. This is perfect for an American studies class field trip or for anyone interested in boats! Personally, I love museums and this one is one of the best in Brooklyn. There are cool movies and explanations and I feel like you can learn something new every time. If you are ever heading to the Brooklyn bridge or DUMBO -- I highly recommend going out of your way for a little bit to check this museum out!

Great museum. 1) It is FREE! 2) It has a giant anchor from an assault ship and a 200+ year old cannon. 3) Excellent place to learn about the shipping/maritime importance Brooklyn had.

I loved this little museum. I had such a good time walking through all the different exhibits. This museum is in the cut so if you don't know where it is because it's set away from the street you can easily miss it. I love the fact that it's free and it is just a nice little place. I think that because it's in such a strange location it doesn't get very crowded which is perfect. I love going to museums that are not overly crowded but not empty either. So this was the perfect fit. I can't wait to return.

Here's a great, FREE, place to kill a couple of hours. The museum is housed in a sustainable building that was constructed in 1 week out of salvaged USS Carolina materials. The bathroom water is recycled rainwater, which is held in an underground cistern. The beautiful original materials combined with the modern designs makes for an impressive, artistic space. The installations include the permanent naval yard history with interactive maps and recordings as well as temporary galleries filled with the goods manufactured at the naval yard. Step outside and you can see the few remaining operational dry docks. If you're lucky, they'll be a tug boat, ferry, or other ship being worked on. Apparently there's a pretty decent cafe here as well, though I didn't have a chance to visit.

The Brooklyn Navy Yard Museum (Building 92) presents the history of the Yard with exhibits on three floors in a new building attached to the historic Commandant's Residence on Flushing Avenue. The exhibits are well organized and include several replicas of the ships built in the Yard over its active life. The Yard - long since abandoned by the Navy - is being transformed into an exciting industrial-commercial-restaurant-historical complex (which includes a HUGE new Wegmans!!!). It is absolutely worth a visit if you are visiting Brooklyn.

Great museum that gets no love, seriously this place is always empty. It's a great history museum. Going into Brooklyn's history over the years, the origins of the Navy Yard and some historic war artifacts. The place is gorgeous. Amazing design, very modern. The views provided by the top floors are fantastic. You get a great view of the surrounding area which is beautiful on a day like this past weekend. Show this place some love, it's the Brooklyn way.

Informative nice exhibition space on the history of Brooklyn Navy Yard. Hidden gem, with lots of informations and objects. Its free and on three floors. The first floor is maybe a bit overwhelming with texts and displays, but the upper floors are great. I like how it tells the story of the Yard until today, with objects, images and video interviews of current tenants' artists designers and craftsmen, as well as old workers.

If you're an American history fan, a fan of the Armed Forces, specifically the Navy, or just wandering about in Brooklyn looking for something interesting to do you should totally check this place out. It's such a nice exhibition of some of the history of the what once was a functioning navy yard. The lady at the front desk so was nice and quite informative. Visitation fee is suggested donation. Thanks for preserving our American history!

Interesting. A lot of history relating to brooklyn and New York City. Unfortunately, not much to see. It would've been cool if there was more access to the exterior of the navy yard.

A great museum that needs more recognition! We were in the area and decided to stop by and realized it is a FREE museum. It is divided into three floors of exhibits of the Brooklyn Navy Yards when it was in use. We enjoyed our time learning about the history of the place. In addition, there is a giant anchor in the main entrance, which is really impressive to look at. The building itself is a very eco-friendly/sustainable structure and there are several stations that explain how/why.

I visited BLDG 92 today in the Brooklyn Navy Yard with my husband who is a huge navy/ship/maritime enthusiast and we both found the trek out to Brooklyn to be well worth the effort. The museum exhibits are spread throughout three floors with very detailed history of both the navy yards and of Brooklyn itself. There are some really cool touches to the exhibits as well including an anchor from an assault ship and a 200+ year old cannon. The museum is free but donations are welcome. If you are into history or ships or the navy then check out BLDG 92. It is really cool!

Nice educational experience. Geared more toward kids, but something adults can walk around and appreciate too. Spend time on each exhibit since it isn't very big and its the kind of place that's full of fun facts for cocktail parties in Park Slope or the Upper East Side.

BLDG92 is a terrific little museum dedicated to showcasing the Brooklyn Navy Yards historic past, as well as its present mission as a campus for sustainable manufacturing. The museum is free, and it's a little small, but definitely a nice place to spend an hour. Plus, since it's free, it's a nice place to take a walk and wander around. The higher up you go, the better views of the industrial water front, and while I'm not crazy about the food at the café on the top floor, the views can't be beat. My favorite exhibit is a map of the Yard protected on a table. It is animated to show how the Yard developed and changed over time, and it's amazingly i interactive: for example, I noticed a burning ship drifting through the scene. I touched it, which opened up a window about the 1960 fire on the USS Constellation, which claimed 50 lives. A great place to learn about Brooklyn history, especially if you combine it with one of Turnstile Tours' tours of the Navy Yard.

Great historical museum that tells the story of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. It is primarily a military history museum. The exhibits include films that tell the Yard's story and interviews with the people who worked there. Also, there are numerous ship models of some of the naval ships built at the Yard: the USS Maine, and USS Missouri are prominently displayed. Interwoven are the social and economic changes that occurred during the time the ships were built. The small, clean, and well maintained halls are layed out in a timeline that parallels the Yard's and America's history.

I recently took a group of 49 veterans and their wives (most in their 80's) to the museum. We were treated wonderfully by curator Adrianne Murray, who arranged our tours with very knowledgeable docents. Everyone was completely satisfied, which is unusual for seniors. The museum is very easy to move around in, even with walkers; there are elevators from one floor to another; and there are bathrooms on each floor. The history of the Yard was well presented, and it was also interesting to hear about the Yard's emphasis on green energy for the future. It is quite surprising that no one knows about this wonderful resource. My thanks go out to Ms. Murray for creating and maintaining such a fine exhibit.

Beautiful! This museum was a wonderful experience and I'd really recommend it. Be sure to check out the cafe on the 6th Floor!

The food is very good and the space is cool if maybe a little off the beaten path. I went on the first day and they had a few kinks, but they'll get past that.

This new museum is beautiful and interesting. It covers the history and current use of the Navy Yard in a fun way. One interactive map shows the physical changes to the land at various stages. Our 3-year-old liked the anchor and scavenger hunt, and or 6-year-old liked the whole thing.

Lots of history, presented in an interesting way. So many stories that one visit was not enough, so I'm heading back. Easy to get to via shuttle bus from subway stop in downtown Brooklyn.

A first rate museum. Excellent exhibits highlight the unique and diverse history of the Navy Yard, going back to 1801, through the Civil War, it's heydays during WWii, its sad decline from the late 60's and its rebirth as an industrial and film center. An enjoyable and easy walk there from DUMBO. Check out the spooky old buildings in the Yard on your way.
