6 Interactive Culinary Experiences to Try in Charleston

"On Bulldog Tours’ culinary walking excursions guides combine deep knowledge with a flair for storytelling across options like a Ghosts and Spirits crawl, Savor the Flavors of Upper King Street, and the classic Grits, She-Crab Soup, and BBQ tour; over two and a half hours in the Historic District you stop at three restaurants and a specialty shop to taste Lowcountry staples—creamy grits, rich she-crab soup, and slow-smoked barbecue—while guides connect each dish to the city’s geography, trade, and cultural history. Tours are capped at about 12 guests, cost around $95 per adult, and recommend comfortable shoes for the walking format." - Lauren Mowery

Our South of Broad Houses and Gardens Tour was perfect, just what we’d hoped for. Our guide Faith was so knowledgeable and friendly. She started with a great overview of Charleston history, then shared tidbit after tidbit as we roamed the streets before and in between the two museum house tours. Our docents at the houses were also fantastic. We finished with a wide perspective on the city and its history, along with ideas of what to do with our remaining time there. I’m so glad we took this tour and were blessed by Faith!

Patricia D.

Google
Our tour guide Ann Garris was very knowledgeable, warm and friendly. She brought Charleston alive with facts and anecdotes and left us wanted to dig deeper. Anne spoke of history, mystery and preservation. So many people greeted her with genuine friendliness which was reciprocated. I couldn’t recommend both Ann and Bulldog Tours enough. Pre tour I’d to get in touch a couple of times as our cruise ship changed the Charleston date twice. They responded instantly and they were always accommodating. We couldn’t have found a better guide or tour company.

Google
Gordon, our tour guide is a true gem of Charleston! We spent two hours walking the streets, and it was the absolute highlight of our trip. He has an incredible depth of knowledge about the town’s history, but what really sets him apart is his delivery; he is hilarious, charismatic, and a master storyteller. He has a way of making history feel alive rather than just a list of dates. It felt less like a formal tour and more like walking through the city with an old friend who knows every secret Charleston has to share. If you want to truly understand this city and have a great time doing it, book Gordon. Five stars aren't enough!

Google
Our Captains Tour (12/30, 11 am) with Jim was amazing. He was so knowledgeable and shared his personal experiences on this type of vessel. This made the tour feel real, more of a testimony than a script. He was respectful to all participants and adjusted his discussion to what they needed to understand. My husband is a Navy Veteran and really appreciated the real life insights he contributed to the tour. Jim, thank you for your service! Highly recommended 👌

Google
I had a wonderful time on their Food tour. The food was outstanding — the shrimp & grits were a real highlight, and the she-crab soup was the best I’ve tasted anywhere in the Lowcountry. Andrew, our guide, brought everything to life with his stories, local insights, and easy sense of humor. He created such a relaxed, friendly atmosphere that people naturally started chatting, connecting, and even exchanging cards by the end. It felt like the perfect balance of great food, interesting history, and genuinely good company. And also a shout-out to Grace from the Ghost Tour: her storytelling was brilliant — strong voice, sharp timing, and a way of building tension that pulled everyone in. A masterclass in how to guide a ghost tour. Both experiences made my Charleston visit truly memorable. Thabk you to the whole Bulldog team!

Google
We have done six tours across three separate trips to Charleston. The great thing about it is that no two tours are ever the same. Each guide has their own style, personality, and personal stories that add to the tour. This last time we toured the Provost Dungeon with Sarah (she called herself Mo) and it was excellent. You could feel her personal experiences with the entity known as the spectre coming to bear. I highly recommend this company, and doing multiple tours with them. Or even the same tour with different guides for a truly unique experience.

Google
We did the walking history tour with Bulldog Tours and really enjoyed it! Our guide, Keith, was incredibly knowledgeable and engaging — I walked away having learned so much about Charleston that I didn’t know before. The value for the quality was excellent, and out of all the tours I took during my trip, this one was definitely the best! If I had more time in the city, I would definitely be doing additional tours with this company.

Google
Merrill was wonderful. She was very knowledgeable and had great side stories. I enjoyed the tour and so did my dogs. I forgot to take their picture during the actual tour...Liza & Sadie give you 8 paws up.

Yelp
Visiting from seattle wa. Went on jail ghost tour last night with tour guid Faith. She was amazing! Weird thing... I took tons of pics and video's. When yhe tour started my phone alerted me I only had 15% battery left. Weird because I had charged it. Then at the end of the tour I took a final picture of my neice with the jail in background. My phone died right after. Then it was giving me and alert "charge error". It would not turn on! I tried several different chargers. Nothing. It was definitely eerie. Makes me wounder if I captured someone in the photos who didn't want to be seen. My nieces who are 12 and 16 were and are still freaked! 07/21/25

Yelp
Excellent! Fran was the narrator for the tour and she was fantastic! Learned a lot about Charleston from her! I highly recommend Bulldog Tours on your visit to Charleston!

Yelp
We took the bulldog tours haunted graveyard walk. We met at their building and while folks gathered we got ready. We walked and talked a bit. Of course we had a couple of know it alls but our guide did a good job squelching them to everyone else's pleasure. We ended up in a graveyard tht was full of Charleston history. Though we did not see anything out of the ordinary I did get a few pics with orbs. Now most of the time orbs are dust or something else explainable but these only happened in a few shots, so who knows. It was a great way to spend some time and learn some of the history of Charleston that you don't read about.

Rebecca F.

Yelp
Ken did a great job on the USS Yorktown tour. My kids enjoyed it and it was super interesting. You even get to go to parts of the ship that are not on the regular tour. Super creepy!

Yelp
I LOVED THIS! First time in Charleston and had to do the spooky stuff. My guide was Jack and he's such a great storyteller! He speaks so conversationally, not like he's reciting something he memorized. We did the ghost and graveyard tour and I loved visiting Circular Congregation. I learned SO much about not just the graveyard but Charleston as a whole. Suuuper fascinating! I took a million pictures and cant wait to come back and bring friends!
google avatar

Sunnyfishnca M.

Yelp
Our guide, Sarah, was great. We learned a lot and she was very passionate about her job. We were contacted by the company that an event was taking place and that could reschedule us if we wanted. We greatly appreciated the offer. Unfortunately our short stay in Charleston did not allow for a change in plans. The jail house was definitely creepy. The party going on kind of took away from the allure of the ghost tour. Sarah still made it fascinating. It is crazy to think so much horror had taken place in one building. This is a tour to take if you're in Charleston but do a late one so it's completely dark. It will make your hairs stand up.
google avatar

Emily T.

Yelp
We did the 8PM walking tour of the haunted Old City Jail in downtown Charleston with Sarah as our tour guide and it was amazing. It was heavy, but she was so informative and passionate about the true stories of all the history here. We didn't experience any ghost sightings but we did definitely feel physical effects of being in a place where many people greatly suffered dark and awful things for so many years. I felt heaviness in my body and head and was a bit nauseous especially in the first few rooms, so if anyone finds themselves particularly sensitive to supernatural energy, be aware of the possibility of feeling it on this tour. Wouldn't change a thing, it was so fascinating and disturbing and we loved it.

Yelp
We had such a fabulous tour yesterday. David and his knowledge of Charleston made our short time there enjoyable.

Yelp
I thoroughly enjoyed my spooky night tour with Dakota/Bulldog Tours. It was such a perfect way to wrap up our time in Charleston. My friend and I purchased tickets to the Charleston Ghost and Dungeon Tour, which made stops at the dungeon (obviously), the waterfront, Philadelphia Alley, a church, and more. We had some no-shows in our group, so there were just four of us on the tour with Dakota, which made it feel like a VIP experience. The other two folks in the group happened to be from my home state and it was such fun chatting with them in between stops. Dakota was a top-tier storyteller and a Charleston native. He clearly loves his town and sharing historical lore. It was really just a perfect evening. I highly recommend taking a tour through Bulldog. I'll have to check out their other themed tours on future visits.
google avatar

Yelp
We booked a tour and 2 hours prior they cancelled because of not enough other bookings. They did call and refunded our charges so I am not giving them a single star.

Yelp
We had an amazing time on Bulldog's "Ghosts & Graveyards" tour!! Our tour guide, Dave, was very knowledgeable and great at telling the stories of all of the haunts. The tour was perfectly spooky (as being in a cemetery at 10 pm usually is!!) while feeling totally safe. I look forward to visiting Charleston again to take another Bulldog tour!

Yelp
We did two tours with Bulldog during our time in Charleston. The first was the ghost tour that included the dungeon and graveyard. The second tour was the Captain's tour on the Yorktown. Merrill was a guide for the ghost tour and she was fabulous! A great story teller. I enjoyed seeing the dungeon very much and appreciated the information about the tombstones in the graveyard. I have toured a cemetery or two (or two dozen) in my life so I am pretty familiar with some of the symbols you see on tombstones but I learned something new on this tour, which is always nice. My hubs enjoyed the tour as well. He particularly liked that Merrill was just a "normal" person wasn't dressed up in period or a ghost theme, lol. I don't remember our guide's name on the Yorktown, but he was a retired gentleman who could really run around the ship! All that walking up and down stairs and ladders, whew! He was almost hard to keep up with and boy did he know his history as well. So much great information! We were glad we paid the extra money for the guided tour because we don't think we would have gotten as much out of it if we just did the tour on our own, reading stuff along the way. Our guide really brought the stories to life. I would definitely recommend Bulldog Tours! The knowledge of the guides was phenomenal.

Single Gal S.

Yelp
Clara did a great job with our tour of 16 people. She started very promptly, moved us at a good pace, spoke very loudly and clearly, had great energy, and had an abundant amount of historical information to share with us. We had a great tour and will be recommending it.

Linda S.

Yelp
Perfect rout to start our Charleston visit! I highly recommend the culinary/food walking tour and the history tour. Both Faith and Mike were extremely knowledgeable tour guides with a wealth of information about the history of food and the history of Charleston. We learned tons that we did not know even though we have been coming to Charleston for years.

Daniel T.

Yelp
We went on the Charleston Ghost & Dungeon Tour! Devlin was our tour guide and did a wonderful job! #charlestonsc #ghosttour #bulldogtours

Yelp
The Haunted Jail tour is a must! It literally sent chills down my spine. The stories, the goosebumps that form on your arms when entering the different rooms, the horror..Certainly not for the faint of heart. I can only give this 4 stars as I thought it was extremely short for the price. Any other tour typically gives you double the time for that cost. No group rates either. We enjoyed the tour guide and his stories. I would suggest going during Halloween like we did!
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
We combined our visit to the Ft Sumter National Park with a guided 2 hr walking tour of Charleston. Directions for the meeting area were clear. Tour guide, Keith, was the best! Knowledgeable, engaging, interesting, and open to all questions. It made it more special that he's been a life long resident so knew the details of the city's history. Highly recommend this tour and guide!
google avatar

Dave R.

Yelp
Keith was fantastic! My mom and I took the VIP Ghost Tour and it was great. He really immersed us into the Charleston culture and told great stories. We were able to see a few different sites that were significant in history. Keith really made the tour great with his knowledge - him being a local really helps! 10/5 would recommend him!

Elsie Miller H.

Yelp
I have Done their food tour 4 times. all were great ! I was on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship.
google avatar

E M.

Yelp
We're Charleston natives but brought friends from out-of-town on the haunted dungeon tour. Sabian was the best!!! He was very knowledgeable and engaging. Highly recommend to anyone, local or tourist.

Merlin G.

Yelp
Our tour guide was Mike Hebb and he did an amazing job. He is an historian and very knowledgeable. We really enjoyed the tour
google avatar

Brian K.

Yelp
We did the VIP ghost tour with Darian last night. She was great at telling the stories as if she was there. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Michelle O.

Yelp
While vacationing in Charleston, SC what better thing to do then act like a tourist and join a walking ghost tour!! I loved every minute of it. So much history and culture. Our guide was knowledgeable and was great about answering questions!

Susan S.

Yelp
Tour of the York was great. We did the ghost tour. Our guide Dusty was informative, and engaging. We wish we would have had a little time to explore the ship. Would not sign up for another guided tour for that reason.
google avatar

Tee F.

Yelp
We expected embellishments about the tour subjects but the tour guide seemed to be talking a lot of lies about himself. What is the point of that?

Alison B.

Yelp
We had a lovely tour with Ann. Her personal stories provided an exceptionally authentic perspective. She embodied the south hospitality vibe, while engaging the entire group and answering so many questions.
google avatar

PJ T.

Yelp
The Charleston food tour was incr-edible! We ate drank and laughed albeit a little chilly the group was warm and friendly enough.

Kayla S.

Yelp
Sarah was so much fun! So interactive and the experience was great! Didn't get haunted like I wished but oh well!
google avatar

Cari S.

Yelp
It was a great tour and our tour guide was very knowledgeable. While the ghostly part is sort of built in, it was the wealth of historic information that I truly enjoyed!

Sam A.

Yelp
the tour didn't have enough food, the guide really didn't speak to the history that much, and the dessert was a slice of cake the size of a quarter. NOT WORTH $100 EACH :(

Carlo F.

Yelp
Awesome! Our guide was great! We booked the ghost vip tour. My wife loves ghost tours. This was very good!

Scott H.

Yelp
My wife and I were in the Charleston area for a week and looked up a tour guide company that could do a walking tour in the historic area of Charleston. We struck gold. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and informed us of a lot of information that we had not previously known.I recommend this tour company highly.

Donna H.

Yelp
Enjoyed the tour. Monty did a great job of telling the stories, providing history and interacting with the group. Bulldog Tours had exclusive access to the graveyard we toured so we were able to have up an close view of the markers and tombs.
google avatar

Tina G.

Yelp
We did the ghost tour with Randy. Randy made the tour! The jail itself was kinda what you would expect for a spooky tour, but Randy did such a great job educating us on some of the horrors that occurred the jail. He made the spooky tour engaging without being too kitschy. Very enjoyable tour!
google avatar

Evelyn M.

Yelp
Noah was our guide for the VIP walking tour at 7:45pm. I selected this tour because you went to both the graveyard & dungeon. The commentary was informative and creepy at times and the graveyard part was the best. I was disappointed in the dungeon as it was very staged ( several people commented it was "Disneyesk" with mannequins throughout. Noah did a great job keeping our tour moving & engaged.
google avatar

Gloria A.

Yelp
RUN dont walk! Seriously the best carriage ride tour We did the night spooky one Ofcourse Amazing history and the tour guide was hilarious I cant remember his name but he was a young guy w curly hair in a low ponytail He was the best! They also let you pet the horses I highly recommend!!!
google avatar

Kendra B.

Yelp
Easy booking process, easy to find meeting place. Keith was our tour guide and he was great! Loved the stories, dungeon and graveyard was neat.
google avatar

Chrissy F.

Yelp
The only ghost tour in Charleston that allows access to the circular graveyard after hours!! After 20+ years of living in the south, I finally made the move to experience a frightfully delightful tour. The bulldog tour group offered two time frames for this ghost tour of 7:30 and 9:30pm. Our tour guide was named Devlin and he was super informative and had a clear voice. He felt passionate about what he does and could tell! Our tour took us down part of an alley, near a church, and then into the graveyard. We ended the tour in Washington Square. Overall had a chillingly entertained time! Also, I saved some money by mentioning their ad from one of the local papers so that helped with the price a bit. At the end of the tour, Devlin mentioned if you share his name for booking the next tour there would also be a discount so something to consider for the next tour! Happy haunting!!

Angela P.

Yelp
I've done multiple tours with Bulldog over the years and keep coming back. The food tours are fabulous but my most recent was the newer haunted jail tour. Tour guide Sarah was excellent! I felt thoroughly creeped-out, loved the real life stories and and definitely worth it.

Joyce G.

Yelp
Dave C was an excellent tour guide- very knowledgeable and pleasant. My husband and I would recommend him highly!

Lisa P.

Yelp
Highly recommend taking a walking tour with this group. It's a delightful intro to the city.
google avatar

Rich M.

Yelp
Our family took the Graveyard tour with Darian . Talk about passion and knowledge of Charleston, Ms Darian was extremely patient and helpful with all of us Also a very well grounded young woman that gives me hope for this country's future. On Eric the Pirates level 100%

Andrea F.

Yelp
Loved our Historic Charleston S.C walking city tour with Nancy. She was very informative and had lots of great information about history and local area. We highly recommend this tour and Nancy.

Kate V.

Yelp
We did the walking Ghost and Dungeon tour this past week. Kevin was our guide and he was really good at telling the stories and keeping my kids interested. Great tour !
google avatar

Aileen P.

Yelp
We loved the graveyard and ghost tour led by Emma.... Fun experience and good blend of Charleston history and lore. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Quintina G.

Yelp
I've been on many Bulldog tours but this one right here...Sarah our tour guide made it a 100xs intriguing! She was very informative about the history and even provided her own paranormal experience. I think would recommend this tour a 10 out of 10. If you happen to get Sarah as your tour guide you'll be in for a treat! We had her for the Circular Church graveyard tour!
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
We took the ghost tour of the old town jail with Bruce! He's extremely good at his job and told the stories so well! It was definitely spooky and I would recommend!
google avatar

Clarissa K.

Yelp
5-25-23 9pm My husband and I booked this tour the day before online believing the experience would be even better late at night. Hubby absolutely loves to hear about the sightings of ghosts on television. Therefore what could be better than a tour here rich in so much history. The tour we signed up for was 90 minutes Ghost and Dungeon Walking Tour for $78.44. No one tells you that with the dark cobblestone streets just getting to where the tour started was a challenge. Once we got there Steve our guide lead us down the cobblestone streets at an extremely fast pace. I work out several times a week and found it extremely difficult to keep up. Almost felt we were on a hike not a ghost tour. We stopped in the open market so our guide could put our mind to rest that no slaves were sold here and that the market stayed open even during Covid. What about the ghosts interesting information however we signed up for a Ghost tour. Other tours and actually if you read the signs will tell you this information without paying $78 dollars. So next stop hurray keep up you definitely want to break an ankle and go to the hospital. Oh wait will there be ghosts there? Lol once we make it to the Dungeon all this running I have to go to the ladies room so a nice guide in the Customs House took me there while everyone else went to the basement. The Dungeon is literally a poor man's Disney attraction and guess what no ghosts. But before we leave our guide Steve will show you on his phone some activity from a prior guest picked up on their phone and gave him a copy. Really that's it? Next stop Washington Park we were not promised to see George rise from the dead and the thought of retracing where I was already at earlier in the day was not exciting or interesting so we cut our losses and left. Hands down the absolute worst tour I have ever been on in my life. Over priced at $78.44 I should have at least been scared not given a hike in the dark. The only up side is it didn't rain as this tour was rain or shine. My advise to the tour company rename the tour for the truth you hike people around in the dark read them signs they can read for free. This tour is a definite pass.

Denise F.

Yelp
In all honesty, food tour felt like a waste of $95. Food portions were tiny and we learned next to nothing. The tour guide seemed lazy and didn't provide anything educational until the second restaurant and that was AFTER we inquired as to when the education would start. And that was Minimal at best. We had already been in Charleston for two days and had eaten at beautiful restaurants with excellent food. The three restaurants our guide took us to were mediocre in comparison. Also, heads up: $40 for a 2 drink alcohol option is ludicrous. We were thankful we did not purchase that and instead bought drinks at the restaurants along the tour.
