The Best Hotels and Resorts in Australia and Oceania: The Gold List 2025

"In the middle of red-dirt nowhere on 400,000 acres in the Northern Territory, Bullo River Station is a snapshot of Australia’s hard yakka life: a sepia-toned outback fantasy where guests, dressed in boots and wide-brim hats, swoop in on helicopters. Dating back to 1959, this deeply rooted homestead has changed hands a few times but is now in its latest incarnation, having joined the stable of Luxury Lodges of Australia. Australian interior stylist Sibella Court has distilled her well-known bush-tucker style in the sandstone space and its 12 bedrooms. Smart and rugged, the accommodations feature oodles of handmade touches: forged hardware by local blacksmiths, towel holders braided by whip makers, and artwork by Indigenous artists. Simple cast-iron beds with nubby linens keep things simple. Days are spent getting dusty by visiting waterholes, angling for barramundi, and saying hello to the 2,000 or so floppy-eared Brahman cows. Up above, kookaburras and cockatoos flock, and beady-eyed crocodiles float through the muddy rivers. Ancient aboriginal rock art depicting a land before time is etched into rugged red cliffs and ridge lines. The landscape of waterfalls, craggy escarpments, and gushing rivers swallows you whole. But it’s the communal dinners that provide a peek into everyday outback life. The station staff, from the stockmen and station managers to the guides, pile plates with farm-fresh steaks, just-made salads, and homemade sausages, while fast-flowing ice-cold beers and salty plum gin cocktails fuel the rowdy conversation. The experience is fantastic and the staff and the attention to detail is first class. This is a true wilderness experience and with the helicopter add ons it is like an African wildlife safari but in Australia. The chef really delivers and the excursions are great. The Bullo River gorge trip is amazing. You must do the champagne falls, rock art and Sunset Point heli trip. It is like being on True North.||Only one criticism and that is the accommodation. The guest rooms are small and are not what you expect for what you pay (which is a lot). They probably need to rebuild the guest wing to create luxury guest accommodation and I suspect they know it. ||Regardless we would return.

Bullo River Station is an incredible resort with a variety of exciting activities! The staff were absolutely phenomenal. The rooms were very comfortable, the food and drink - excellent. The views were unforgettable. Every staff member was extremely knowledgeable, and my husband and I left so happy that we learned so much about this region of Australia. Our main interest for our visit was bird watching. A guide by the name of Asitha took us to a number of locations where, in total, we were able to identify and observe the beauty of 82 different species of birds! It was beyond our expectations. Without Asitha's keen eye and knowledge in ornithology, we would have never been able to spot so many! Another guide, Ben, helped us explore the stunning night sky, and shared incredible facts with us about astronomy and the aborigines use of the stars in their culture. We got to see crocs, tour the station in a helicopter, and discover knew hikes with an awesome guide, Kyra. Management was so kind. If you visit this region of Australia, be sure to book a stay at Bullo.

We had an amazing 3 nights at BR. The staff were fantastic and they spoiled us silly, from the cold towels to the mango daiquiris by the pool to special treats at breakfast. Sandy enthusiastically encouraged us to try all the voyager wines to discover our favourites. The excursion to waterholes for swimming and the helicopter trips were a wonderful way to view the spectacular countryside. The rooms are beautifully comfortable fully air conditioned which was needed and every attention to detail was thought of. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay thanks to the beautiful surroundings and professional staff ensuring we had and experienced everything we wanted. |A special experience.

An astonishing level of comfort, service, dining, guidance and scenery in one of the most remote parts of Australia, the far north west of the NT. From the moment of arrival (on an airstrip adjoining the homestead) to our reluctant departure, we were wonderfully looked after; it seemed nothing was too much trouble. The excursions from the homestead exceeded our expectations. Thoroughly recommended

From the moment we arrived and drove in the homestead gate, the pampering commenced and never stopped for the entire duration of our stay. Remediation of Project Butter (those that know will know!) made it necessary for our car to be washed out completely which was supervised by Dolly, assisted by Grace and Justine - thank you.||||||Our first afternoon was taken up with a tour of the Station - very interesting to see what they are doing with feral Buffalo and also in improving the genetics of the cattle by introducing Wagyu to the herd. A great dinner on the patio followed with Daniel, the Station Manager, his lovely wife Sarah, and the rest of the team. Early to bed in a huge king size bed. Our room was well appointed with everything and more that we needed - even down to drinks bottles with our initials on them. A refreshment station outside our room in the hallway offered a variety of teas, proper coffee, snacks and a fridge full of cold drinks and wine - all beautifully presented.||||Next day, a hearty breakfast on the patio and off for a leisurely drive to Marlee's Bath for a swim in cool fresh water, a delicious BBQ lunch in the bush and an afternoon on the boat up the gorge and a bit fishing (note not catching!). Dinner was a BBQ in the patio with all the Station staff.||||Next day, horse riding before breakfast followed by time in the cattle yard watching Buffalo drafting - very interesting. A relax by the pool and a drive to the top of the escarpment to see the wonderful views, and then evening cocktails by the river.||||||And whilst all this was going on, the crew were working hard behind the scenes doing our laundry for us, making up our room (3 times a day) and preparing wonderful food for our enjoyment.||||||This is a special place and there is nothing not to enjoy or like about it. It is made special not just because of where it is and what it is but by the staff. From the Ringers to the housekeeping staff and the tour guides to the chef - all were simply fantastic and their sole purpose was to make sure we wanted for nothing.||||We will return - and it can't come soon enough for me! We highly recommend Bullo River Station.||||A big thank you to: Justine & Daniel and the team for making our experience special.

Champagne Falls was a highlight for us, and the great dinners shared with about 10 guests. Nice large swimming pool, after the muster. Wow, second visit here, and we will be back. Thanks to the great hosts
