On the Grid : Bump n Grind Cafe

"One of the first things I look for when I go to a coffee shop is what kind of gear they're packing. I feel this is a good indicator of how seriously they take their coffee and what level of product I can expect. With that in mind, Bump n Grind definitely delivers the goods making it one of my favourite places in the city to enjoy coffee for coffee's sake, also one of the few places I know of that still sells the beautifully light bodied coffee made by a clover machine (thanks Starbucks). If you're looking for a quiet place to mellow out with and enjoy a fine brew check this spot out." - Asterios Moutsokapas

Super cute coffee place. Perfect for a slow morning with nice and funky art around you. My coffee was absolutely adorable, small sleepy kitty

Google
I was looking for a takeaway coffee on Sunday and came across this place by chance—it was terrible. First, the coffee was completely burnt and tasted awful. Then, the medium size was priced like other places, but the actual size was like a small elsewhere. I was really disappointed with myself for choosing this place because I usually try to support local businesses, but sometimes they make me regret it. I thought I should’ve just gone to Starbucks, at least I know what to expect there.

Google
Probably my new favourite cafe! Thrift store with 5 dollar clothes! And they also showcase local artists. Food: chicken pesto sandwich was very flavourful and good pricing. Sooo many drink options I was overwhelmed but will be going back to try more haha Outlets: there’s an outlet at almost every table! Seating: comfortable and a medium/good number throughout the cafe. There are some high chairs and regular chairs as well

Google
The best and cutest Pikachu Pistachio Latte I have ever had, and the cafe has a lot more to offer like cookies and other baked goodies to pair with your drink. I love just hanging out there. The place itself is packed with great stuff too, if you want to do some thrift shopping on the side, the cafe is perfect. Plus, I really like Fred, he is super nice, chill and great with customers.

I bought a vision pot from the store. Due to the dim lighting and my focus has been on which size of pot I should get, I didn’t notice a crack inside the pot until I got home. I also might have thought it was dirt that could be removed because the pot was dusty. I reached out immediately about the crack and the seller requested a photo but I was coming down with a fever so I wasn’t able to turn my mind to it until I felt better. I reached out after five days, which is not an unreasonable period of time to ask for a refund. The seller now refused to provide a refund or acknowledge responsibility or even communicate. The crack is inside the pot so it’s unlikely that I have caused it when I was carrying it back home. I hope you can sleep at night - selling cracked wares which can result in people ingesting glass pieces.

Google
Good latte and cappuccino, the barista was awesome. Love the atmosphere.and kids friendly . They sell games , toys and clothes inside the coffeeshop which made it very unique. Very fun coffee shop to check it out .

Lovely cafe, I had rush so I took to go their americano. The taste is a little bitter than other coffee shops. I will try apple cider next time and enjoy the atmosphere.

Google
Another great coffee shop on Commercial. The Drive is filled with amazing places for coffee. Bump N Grind is another one of those for caffeine addicts. Fresh pastries, smooth java and friendly staff. Decor is very warming and music is amazing. 👍👏

Yelp
Very cool quaint coffee shop that has cute random stuff for thrifting. Decent coffee and pastry. Love the vibe.

Yelp
I've gone here only a few times. Their mango smoothie was good but pricey $8 which is a size of a grande. Tried their marshmallow latte was told very sweet and was craving sweet and hoping to be sweet but it wasn't. There wasn't a marshmallow taste as well which I was told there was. Lots of cool decor and it's a chill place I guess.

Yelp
Sweet little gem on the Drive! Some wonderful seating for those who are hoping to do work, including a cozy, hidden nook at the back with armchairs and carpeting. It pleasantly reminds me of a living space of an art student - some contemporary furniture, plants and strings of Christmas lights, board games, a random mannequin, lots of local art for sale (really love their endeavour to support local)! I could spend hours here (and I probably will come back and do just that). A great cafe made to be productive, read, or catch up with friends. The drinks aren't bad either - I ordered a lavender latte and would love to come back and try more of their menu.

Yelp
I love this place! The staff are great, helpful and patient, the place is clean and cosy, the food is good, and the ambience is lovely! The baristas are wonderful - they take the time to chat and prepare a great cup of Moroccan mint tea! I love Commercial but it's such a busy street. But this coffee shop is airy and bright and without the chaos of feeling like you're on such a busy street. Calm, great drinks and great staff - all in all, my new favourite

Yelp
Came to Bump n Grind with my 9 yr old daughter hoping to get a nice hot cup of hot chocolate but all we got was 1/5 warm chocolate and 4/5 foam for $4.00. When we arrived, we were greeted by the cashier and we asked for a cup of hot chocolate to go. She asked what size and I told her small cup. She then asked if I would like it warm or hot. I asked my daughter what she preferred and she told me she wanted it hot because she was feeling cold from being outside. I told the cashier we wanted it hot. As she began to make it, it all of a sudden started to pick up and she stopped making our hot chocolate and began to take orders. A couple min later, a gentleman jumped behind the barista to continue making our hot chocolate. As it was handed to me, the first thing I noticed was how light the cup was and I was expecting to have to put a sleeve on it so as not to burn my fingers. Did not need the sleeve as it was not hot at all. Gave it to my daughter and asked if this was hot enough for her. She told me that it was not hot at all. I asked her if she wanted it hotter and she told me she did. I brought it back to the barista to let them know that the order was not made correctly and they did make a new one but again, it was mostly foam and not hot at all. I was confused as to how they could make the order wrong a second time and asked "is this correct and normally how you make your hot chocolate?" Their reply was "yes". So really not much I could do about it but as I thought about it, they should not advertise it as hot chocolate but more like warm chocolate milk and for a hefty price of $4.00 for a 6oz, that was 1/5 full.....those are prices I would expect from Starbucks or Mint downtown. Needless to say, I was not expecting this from the rave reviews it has received. Kinda makes me wonder how honest these reviews are. To be fair, I have not tried the rest of their selections but does make me wonder if my experience there would be any better the second time around. I have to say, I would not recommend this place to anyone. If a customer complains that they got the order wrong the first time, you would think that they would take the time and make sure you get it right the second time. I'm all for supporting small businesses but I would return to those shops who care about their customers and have a good sense of pride for their business.

Yelp
I don't see nothin' wroooooooonnnngggg.... So I went in thinking that it would be pretentious filled with mulletted women and unkept bearded men who are too cool for school (because this is what I've heard about Commercial Drive and the people that hang out there). Anyhow, this wasn't the case at all! From other reviews I was expecting them to be super pretentious jerks but that wasn't it at all. The guy who helped me was very friendly and smiley, even though it was a rainy day. He was patient because I take a while deciding and he helped me out. He seems to like his job which is always a good thing. The latte I ordered was delicious! His half-sweet caramel latte suggestion was great. The lattes are a bit pricey but standard for around this quality, and they're the "traditional" and not "tall" size, which is a bit smaller. They're renovating and redoing their furniture... And by redoing I mean they're actually building their new furniture. The guy who was helping me choose something to get has apparently helped build the tables! They're really cool looking tables, made of wood, with random nuts and bolts in them... They looked pretty cool. This place is pretty far from me but they're super delicious and friendly and they have wifi so I'm definitely gonna head over when I have some work to do (and the time to travel to do it) and hope that they're just as lovely the second time around.

Yelp
This is a light, airy, minimalist coffee spot with skilled baristas who are pleasant and purposeful. I always mourn the fact that I am not coffee drinker when I step into a place like this, but I still enjoy a good hot tea and a freshly-made baked good. They have an admirable selection of the former, and the muffins are delicious and surprisingly less sweet and oily than the average cafe pastry. My pumpkin pecan muffin was huge and had a real homemade appeal. It seems like this Commercial Drive neighborhood is only going to continue to gentrify, and I hope that cool independent establishments like this can stand firm.

Yelp
The name makes it sound like a nightclub, and it even looks like a nightclub, but Bump N Grind is actually just a coffee shop that caters to the avant-garde techno beatniks, people who look like film students, or video game programmers. A relatively new store, it has decided to compete against the other 101 coffee shops on Commercial Drive by creating a more modern ambiance, as opposed to say archaic and Italian. Somehow combining retro with new age, it feels trendy, in a BYOLaptop sort of way. The coffee is nothing special, and the side dishes are run of the mill, but it feels kind of cool to be sipping espresso somewhere that looks like the milk bar from Clockwork Orange, minus the statues that shoot hallucinogenic milk out of their breasts.
google avatar

Lindsay L.

Yelp
They need to speed up their service and should be a little more flexible with customers' requests, considering that they are paying for a product. Good coffee, but way too slow.
google avatar

Lara O.

Yelp
Love the decor, americano was delicious! Also had a BLT croissant, which was fresh and tasty. Definitely a fan :D I found the staff to be really nice, and I appreciate the add tip option while paying with debit (who carries cash anyways? :)
google avatar

Yelp
This place has the best berry scones! Good americano coffee as well! I'll be back.

Yelp
Came here with my friends and my bf. My 2 friends tried the Aeropress coffee which I thought was kinda neat to have at a cafe since I rarely see it. They said it was pretty good and very light in taste. My bf had their mocha with soy milk which was very yummy and the artwork that they did on the top was very pretty! As for their baked goods, they had a few that I wanted to try like their Matcha White Chocolate Brownie, Almond Butter Cookie (gluten-free) and Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie (gluten-free) but I end up getting their Salted Toffee Popcorn Cookie! It was soo good! It actually had popcorn in it!! My friend had it too and he liked it too but he said it would of been extra more delicious if they warmed it up ... I think he's right O_O

Yelp
I just love the Bump and Grind. It has the best service ever. Delicious drinks and food. Also they have a zine library!

Yelp
Fantastic staff, quick service and the food and coffees are very tasty. Worth the trip to the drive

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised by my latest visit here. I hadn't been in several years, and had always had a view of it as quite an inaccessible, hipstery place. Alex G and I came here for a meeting, and it was delightful! The staff were super friendly and happy to help, there was plenty of seating for us to hunker down in while we worked, and a great atmosphere. I ordered a decaf Americano and Alex got a London Fog, and we both got treats. My Americano was very tasty - the coffee was clearly good quality. Alex's drink was almost too pretty to consume, but she managed it! My GF pumpkin pecan bar was deeeelicious! Gotta love dates as sweeteners. I chowed down on that pretty darn quick. Sure, it's not a cheap coffee shop, but it's cute and friendly and the coffee's good!

Yelp
After lunch at Nick's I made my way to Bump N Grind coffee shop. I was still full from Nick's, but I wanted a quiet place to sit and work on my ipad. I almost feel guilty commenting on this coffee shop. I had a chai latte... I guess it was ok. Nothing really special. The coffee shop was ok. Rather bright and airy. On a nice sunny day the sun strikes the shop with a pleasant glare. I guess the overwhelming feeling I was feeling at that moment was wow hey I'm lucky to be living in Van City today! My latte was ok. The guy who made it for me was very friendly. This is kind of a first, but I really don't have a lot to say about this store. It was ok... but it's nothing special. The neighbourhood is kind of trendy. I can see this shop as being a great hang out..
google avatar

Yelp
This is actually my favorite coffee shop in the area. The service is good, staff are nice and welcoming, also their coffee and baked goods are better than moat places in Vancouver.
google avatar

Alexandra G.

Yelp
This place is super close to my apartment and I've started to come more often. They have a triumphant espresso maker that produces some of the best coffee on the Drive. I'm a huge fan of their dirty chai with almond milk. Despite the chairs not being the comfiest and a small interior space, it's a pretty great homework spot. It gets lots of natural light and the music is consistently awesome. They have a few gluten/dairy/soy/sugar free treats which fill me with joy and deliciousness. Huge fan of the almond energy bar and I'm excited to try the rest! I'll definitely be coming back here to get my homework on, the coffee is not to be missed!
google avatar

Michelle G.

Yelp
Did you know they have delicious vegan and vegetarian breakfast wraps here?! Well they do!! And their coffee is pretty darn good and the staff are pretty darn nice. You should check it out!
google avatar

Shane S.

Yelp
Come for the coffee. Best rotation of different craft coffee. Barista's are on point, no sad cappuccinos here. I like the work/relax/chill atmosphere when the music it's too strange, and sitting outside when it's summer.
google avatar

Mira S.

Yelp
I don't like to be so critical but I was very disappointed with the service there. I thought maybe the guy working there was just having a bad day the first time I went there so I shook it off and didn't take it personally. The next time I went in, the same guy was working and was even more of an @ss h0le. All I wanted was a latte and asked him to leave room for cream and he replied "you don't add cream to a latte" and didn't leave room for the cream! Holy moly! Its only coffee and its the end of the world for him should you ask for any modifications.
google avatar

Roanna Z.

Yelp
Bump N Grind, Who loves ya baby?? ME. Love the coffee, love the clientele, love the art, and LOVE the new tables made by Che and Joe. AWESOME job guys! The place has a clean new look. *P.S. congrat's on the "Cup Of Excellence" award.
google avatar

Jody B.

Yelp
They make a mean soy latte but don't go expecting a seat. As coffee shops go, this is one of my favourites on the Drive. Not only do they make a mean cup, but I stock up on their almond energy bars, which make vegan, sugar-free & gluten-free delicious. The staff have always been quick and pleasant and the price point is on par with pretty much every other decent coffee haunt in town. So there's not too much to add on this one... Except perhaps, that this place is always busy. So if you're seeking a meeting spot, do what I do, grab a coffee and make it a meeting walk. There's a ton of great little parks in the area and if you don't need to take notes, a stroll is always an added addition to the day. It's also handy, as it's very unlikely you will be unable to find a spot here that isn't on the communal table and maybe it's just me, but I always feel like a pain hosting a business meeting next to folks trying to wind up and down their day. But for a stop in, coffee buzz, almost bar sesh? Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Holly L.

Yelp
Pretty good coffee here. They feature a number of cool independent coffee roasters, but what really put them over the top for me was their amazing baking. They have the best scones I have had in awhile (especially when it comes fresh out of the oven), and the cookies were outstanding. A nice earl grey shortbread which was crumbly and firm at the same time, and their salted caramel popcorn cookie was tasty and unusual. My goal is to taste every type of baking they have while enjoying an awesome Guatemalan (my current fav) brew. I wish I had discovered this gem earlier. I think their name threw me off. My fault, my mind went in the wrong direction.
google avatar

Milly D.

Yelp
While the atmosphere/decor is nice and the coffee is great, i have one main beef that actually makes it completely unsustainable to go there. As many coffee shops on the drive, it is clearly set up for people to come in and work on laptops, read, etc. More so than other cafes that are meant and designed to be social, busy hubs of noise and activity. So why would someone design a 'work-cafe' where the open concept kitchen area means constant LOUD clanking of dainty ceramic dishes and cups. Not only that, but the staff think this is their living room and they insist on blasting their musical choices far too loudly. With a risk of sounding like a total jerk - I am paying to be there, and I'm only there to try and work. I can make coffee in my own house, but i wanted to change the scenery. You (hipster barrista) are paid to work there, not to treat this place as your own private entertainment club. When I go to work, I don't get to listen to my favourite music at top levels. Neither should you. I asked to get the music turned down, I was only met with derision and condescendence. Well guess what. I won't be coming back, and neither will any of my many friends.
google avatar

Dayna S.

Yelp
I dig it. In my top two for cafe choices on the drive. They use 49th parallel & do it well. They also have a few decent snack options for the dietary-restriction types. The seating is limited, keep that in mind based on the type of cafe visit you have planned.
google avatar

Beverley W.

Yelp
At first glance: hipster pretentious through and through. Instead of foamed milk, it's 'textured' milk. When you order coffee, they offer you a bag of beans to sniff and approve. And the server's explanation of how to use a French press (so difficult!) also was unnecessary. BUT, it's done in the uber-friendly and guileless Vancouver way, and the coffee IS really good and distinct tasting, so I'll just accept it as a funny quirk and let it pass. They don't make you feel stupid when they do it, in fact it kind of feels like the joke's on them. It is a bit drafty though. Crank up the heat, shaggy-haired barista man!
google avatar

Luisa D.

Yelp
Amazingly delicious Americano here. The owner recently switched to Fernwood coffee. When he opened many roasters offered to buy his equipment but then he'd be bound to use their coffee. He refused. He started with 49th Parallel but said something changed and the quality wasn't as good so he switched. I also had a coconut/ginger scone that was memorable. In fact I woke up this morning thinking about it. There were little chunks of candied ginger in it - so good! The atmosphere is comfortable and we sat behind the action at the bar overlooking the cafe. Perfect place to hang out with a friend!
google avatar

Jasmine O.

Yelp
$3.08 for an extremely bitter drip coffee seemed a bit much but the staff are very likeable and the atmosphere makes for a nice meeting spot. 3.5 stars.
google avatar

Sean M.

Yelp
Came in here twice recently. First visit would've been 1 star for the lack of customer service (didn't say hi back and just totally ignored me during the entire transaction.WTF?!) Second visit was easily 5 stars. Friendly barista and my Americano was AMAZING!!!
google avatar

Candora A.

Yelp
Service is always friendly, consistently good coffee! Some selection of pastry (some are actually exotic, such as the matcha brownie!), and some savoury selection as well (not a huge amount, but some). Not a lot of seats, they have a couple of long tables to share (hey, have a coffee and make friends!). Good choice for coffee in the area!
google avatar

Dusty L.

Yelp
I had a Clover-brew coffee roasted by P&S from Calgary ($2.5) and an in-house made cinnamon bun ($3.5). The main issue was with the coffee. It was extremely thin and had some of the astringent sourness that I dislike so much in Parallel 49 coffee. The bun was quite good, and not overly sugary. This cafe now has a large, communal table, and the somewhat stark furnishings were inoffensive. The service was fine,
google avatar

Jason R.

Yelp
I visited this place a few times over the years but only recently learned to really appreciate it. In recent months it seems to be much cleaner and the staff seem happier and way more dedicated. When I visited yesterday it was very evident in my cappuccino. It was smooth and sweet and creamy. They use a clover machine for their 'drip' coffee which is typically tasty - I will return very soon to sample these brews. Their baked goods looks pretty good too...and I will indulge on my next visit.
google avatar

Felix-Marie B.

Yelp
Seriously....these guys are great! I work right next door and it's really cool that all of the staff know me by name and know what I'm going to order. The snacks are great and healthy with vegetarian, vegan and gluten free alternatives. The coffee is stupid good! Cappuccino with chocolate? Oh yeah! The only downside to having such great coffee is that they're a popular spot. It's not like Starbucks where they just crank out the Joe. Perfection takes a little time, especially during peak times. But it's soooooooooo worth it!
google avatar

Jai D.

Yelp
I sometimes grab a coffee on the way to work. Specifically the clover as they were one of the first places to get one. Superbly made and it's worth the extra price. Note that the other location on main doesn't have a clover, so you have to come to the Drive!
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
So I ask for a dry cappuccino and the barista says "we only serve traditional wet cappuccinos". First, there is no such thing. A wet cappuccino is a latte. Stop making things up because you are too lazy to make foam. Second, maybe you should consider trying to give the customer something they want, particularly when they are paying $4 for it. Finally, the owners of this cafe should consider hiring baristas who know what they are doing, and who understand what *customer* service is.... there are a lot of other cafes where I can take my business.
google avatar

Mark P.

Yelp
Been going to this cafe through three different owners. I feel confident saying the current owners are the best (though the previous owner did a great job too). One of the few places in Vancouver where you can get a Clover-brewed coffee that isn't Starbucks. This is one of the highlights of the Vancouver Coffee scene, and when I have friends coming in from out of town who want to visit a few of Vancouver's coffee house gems, this is one of the places I take them. I like that they get in coffees from a variety of roasters, giving you a lot of choice as a customer. The decor inside is good - it wouldn't be my ideal cafe decor, but it works for them and works for me when I visit. I especially like the stand up bar for espresso. The only real knock I can give these guys is that I wish they pulled more normal shots (they generally pull ristrettos). I'm not a fan of short espresso, and I use a lot of the same coffees they use (in my home) and know those coffees are capable of pulling great 35-40g shots from 18.5g of coffee.

Yelp
The london fog was one of the best that I have ever had. Perfect amount of sweet with the slightest hint of lavender... I hate lavender but they somehow make it work! Also tried the matcha brownie - delicious! Heavy white chocolate taste that went well with the delicate matcha flavours. The wifi was OK, connection was unstable but at least it wasn't Shaw because I don't have a Shaw account. I'm not giving 5 stars because the music was way too loud and the seating was uncomfortable, and there were no outlet plugs. I'll definitely be back for a London fog!
google avatar

Aki O.

Yelp
I really like the coffee here and the buns are good too! It's my favorite place to get coffee on Commercial drive. It's smooth and balanced, not bitter. The street parking isn't too bad on this end of commercial. They have lots of seating and even some outside. The service is usually friendly and never bad. I don't live very close to here anymore otherwise I would come way more often.
google avatar

Jennifer Y.

Yelp
Great little coffee shop along The Drive. We came here during a weekday lunch break and I ordered their Hazelnut Latte to go, and plopped myself down in their little patio seating outside. It was sweetened perfectly but the latte itself wasn't as hot as I had hoped. Temperature wise. It was slightly luke warm but I guess it wasn't such a big deal because it meant I could drink it right then and there. (But if I were to take it back to work, I'd probably ask them to zap it a little longer). My co-worker had their Chai Latte and she seemed pretty content with it. PS. I'm in love with those long communal tables.

Yelp
Oh so soft and gentle in the mornings here at the B&G that offers wifi. The new two man show here has been a big hit since they took over about 1yr or so ago.. Serving 49th Parallel Coffee is such a treat, They are one of few the cafes in the city that freshly grind the beans for each and every cup of coffee as they make it, so so euro fresh !! Sweet relaxing music, this cafe picks up as the morning does, it's peak times are late mornings. and afternoons, as they start to grind. They have a real social style long table in the front window and revolving local art on the walls.. The busy Commercial Drive offers a funky assortment of people watching at all times...
google avatar

Sara M.

Yelp
The clover machine coffee is delicious. They have a couple vegan eats/treats options. I always find the staff to be delightful. The space inside and outside is conducive to awesomeness. Ridiculously, my favourite part about this place is the sandwich board outside. The message changes daily and never fails to crack me up or make me think a little deeper. Who is responsible for this chalkboard?! You're rad.
google avatar

Monica M.

Yelp
I was so confused coming in here. It looked like they were having a private function, so I hestitated by the door, but was eventually acknowledged and ushered in. I ordered an Americano to go, but the person on the till didn't seem to be talking to the barista, so eventually I was standing around and someone said, "Can we get you anything?" I told them I'd ordered an Americano to go. When my drink came up on the bar--which took a while despite having no one in line in front of me--the location was oddly placed within the cafe. I'd hate to see them try to handle a morning rush with people filing up to the bar and then trying to scoot away with their hot drinks to find the cream and sugar station. And then I asked about soy milk.... oy vey. Fortunately the coffee was tasty, and I was lucky I wasn't in a rush at all (actually trying to kill time before going to a show at The Cultch).

Yelp
I'll be honest, I wanted to go to Prophouse, but they were closed so I pondered for a bit and remembered coming here before. The Barista really takes care in making your coffee. Cashier was friendly too. Not cheapest coffee in town, but tasty. A nice bitter kick in flavour, if that's what you like.
google avatar

Yelp
The only place that I know of in East Van to get a fantastic variety of coffee beans and a decent cappuccino. Their baked goods are pretty good too.

But this coffee shop is airy and bright and without the chaos of feeling like you're on such a busy street. Calm, great drinks and great staff - all in all, my new favourite!

Yelp
Rich & bold coffee. Had a delicious americano. Didn't have the chance to try their pastries but they looked yummy. Sweet & savory scones as well as other baked goods.

Yelp
I went in to get a regular black drip coffee before the start of my night shift today and gave the guy my thermos to fill. Typically people charge me for a medium coffee as that seems to be what my cup holds. I paid $3 for a drip coffee and was told it'd take a minute and a half to brew. Cool. When the guy behind the counter finished brewing the coffee he said my thermos wouldn't fit under the tap thingy so he filled a paper cup. A SMALL cup. He poured the small cup into my thermos and filled it halfway. I expected him to fill ANOTHER cup to FILL my thermos but he did not. So basically, I paid $3 for a small black coffee. Oh, and the coffee was biiiitter. He shrugged his shoulders and that was that. I won't be going back.

Yelp
Dropped by the first time tonight, the guy that took my order seem like he didn't want to be there. I asked him a few questions about the available sizes, where the beans were roasted, etc., and he answered my questions without any enthusiasm. The beans were decent - lacked creme from the long Americano that I ordered. It's not 49th parallel, nor pallet coffee standard that's for sure. Will unlikely visit again.
