Bún Riêu Gánh – Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam - Gastro Obscura

"The first thing you encounter when you stumble on Bún Riêu Gánh is the colossal pot of red-orange crab broth simmering right there on the sidewalk. The name of the venue alludes to the gánh, or a wooden yoke traditionally used by street vendors to carry their goods, to which the pot is attached. From this pot, brimming with seafood and herbs, the shop’s owner, Mrs. Mai Thi Lien, ladles each bowl to order. A four-decade-old mainstay located near the bustling Ben Thanh Market, the restaurant’s namesake noodle soup, bún riêu, combines rice vermicelli noodles, or bún, with riêu, or a crab paste which is typically combined with pork, shrimp, and prawns to create a solid, meatloaf-like consistency. Also in the bowl are heaping chunks of tofu as well as huyet, or coagulated pork blood, while a side plate of herbs includes perilla leaves and basil. Though the dish is believed to have originated in northern Vietnam, it’s become one of the most popular noodle soups throughout the entire country. Here, Mrs. Lien serves her bún riêu with an accompanying dipping cup of tamarind fish sauce with sliced chili and pure shrimp paste. The use of tamarind is distinctly southern: twirl up the noodles with a piece of crab paste and dip it all into the sauce for a pop of tangy brightness. Know Before You Go Upon arrival, you’ll be asked if you want a bowl đầy đủ (with all the fixings), but you can easily request omissions if there’s anything you don’t want. This doesn’t make the experience any less authentic, per se, as Vietnamese people tend to eat according to individual preference." - Dan Q Dao, linkogecko

Sometimes its worth visiting a vietnamese street food styled restaurant, but be prepared to cramp it in with locals or other tourists. They basically serve a main item, that being the Bún Riêu, served in a very packed, small bowl. The additional flavoursome items of minced crab, tofu, water spinach, tomato, and a selection on condiments are need to bolster a noodle soup needing more flavour. That coupled with the energetic nature of a very popular and busy restaurant, made for a very satisfactory lunch. The seating is small, and not big guy friendly, but thats a common element of Vietnamese street food establishments, and you need to be aware of your own limitations. This was a great stop off for lunch, the service was very quick, and the size of the meal matched the affordable price. For a main dinner I think you could do better in a larger more specialised Bun Rieu restaurant. But the clean lively street food type experience, close to Ben Thanh Market, makes this restro worth a visit.

Bun Rieu here had a good crabby broth with some cool, interesting, and fun ingredients inside. Definitely didn’t use the add-ons to put into the soup as they were very fishy and smelly, but the noodles and everything else were great.

Might be delicious to the locals but Im not sure if tourists will enjoy the taste, as it is an acquired taste in my opinion. The meat though it is crab meat, but I understand it is a mixture of the crab meat and all its inside less the shell, even though it tastes like luncheon meat. And for those who love pig's blood, you can find it here. Anyway, really not to my liking.

I've been looking for crab soup noodle that is not "sitting on the street" and this is the place! Very flavorful soup and I love the shrimp paste sauce. Reasonable price for foreigners.

There is only one staple food, but there are some side dishes and drinks of various flavors. It is a simple style restaurant and a delicious delicacy worth surprising during the trip.

Vietnam is for their high quality flavours not for the service. If you want service stay away from this country but flavour wise every dish is quite unique. They literally have the one dish which is crab and tomato based soup with sausage. Very tasty and worth to try it

Recently stopped by as I was walking around Ben Thanh market around 06:30 AM and walked by this place, saw they opened so came in. I had bun rieu almost everywhere in the city and around the country, I say this place is not like its reputation from other youtube food reviewers. The taste is ok, smaller portion, topping is not as many as other places in other district. The price is a bit in the high side but understandable due to location. The staff is super nice so i am happy with them.

The restaurant is quite crowded, both locals and foreigners. The service is fast. The broth is quite tasty, 1 bowl has big pieces of meat, and 2 pieces of blood cake, quite delicious. However, the amount is a bit small for men with a big appetite. My group of 5 people ordered 5 bowls of vermicelli soup, and after finishing, added 2 more papaya salads because they weren't full yet hahahaha
