The 7 Best Hostels in Australia (Updated 2025)

"I appreciated the location in Surfers Paradise — just a couple of blocks from the beach and near the bars and restaurants — and the hostel’s modern social facilities, including a pool, hot tub, and sundeck. The bunk beds feel almost like separate pods with privacy curtains, reading lights, and two power sockets; all rooms (including dorms) have ensuite bathrooms and balconies, there’s a massive guest kitchen, and note that there is an age cap (35 or under) to stay here." - Matthew Kepnes

This is by far the WORST hostel I have ever stayed in, no exception. It was extremely noisy day and night – every night around 2am people downstairs were screaming and partying like a war zone, and I kept being woken up. On top of that, there were flocks of birds starting to scream sharply from 4–5am every morning. Nobody respected others’ rest. The place is expensive and dirty. I stayed 8 days and my bed sheets were never changed, the floor was never cleaned, and there was rubbish left. Originally, I booked 4 nights, then extended another 4, but when I tried to cancel the second booking one day in advance, they delayed replying for a very long time and finally refused the refund. I had no choice but to continue staying, otherwise I would have had no place to sleep. Check-in was also a nightmare. The location was very hard to find, I asked for picture directions by email but nobody replied, they didn’t even answer the phone (first call went through, then they just ignored me). Overall: dirty, noisy, unhelpful staff, overpriced, and absolutely no respect for guests. The worst hostel experience of my life.

Everything was decent except the kitchen. It was really dirty. No one dried up and put away their dishes, barely even washed them to be honest. Not had this problem in any other hostel so probably needs more enforcement from hostel.

I stayed at this hostel for three nights, but didn't participate in any of the hostel events because I had my own schedule ;) Check-in was actually my only contact with the staff. Since I arrived after 7:00 PM, this was handled perfectly by the neighboring hotel. The rooms weren't very clean, the bathroom and carpet were even dirty, and the shower had no water pressure at all. I was in a 6-person room with good lockers and a safe. The room lacked a place to sit or a small table. I had a balcony with a nice view, but there was no seating there either. It was perfectly adequate for my weekend in Surfers Paradise, but I wasn't thrilled :)

I’ve never felt as uncomfortable in a hostel as I did here. The room was far from clean – there was still trash under my bed from the previous guest, and my sheets had several stains. When opening the window, the smell of cigarette smoke or marijuana would come in. The bathroom and especially the kitchen were also not very clean. The only positive aspects were the friendly staff and the layout of the dorms, which, thanks to the bed curtains, allowed for a good amount of privacy. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend staying here for several nights, depending on your comfort level. Next time, I’ll definitely choose a different hostel.

Great location, 2 min walking distance to local supermarket and shops. 5 min from the main beach. The higher room price is worthwhile, it is reflective of the quality of rooms/amenities. Free breakfasts, clean amenities. Great social experiences arranged. Awesome pool area always buzzing. Cooking amenities are spacious. Easily one of the nicer backpackers I’ve ever been to, I’ve stayed in a couple other backpackers in surfers, bunk takes the win, hands down.

A good hostel in a great location close to public transit, the beach and the center of surfers paradise. It was clean and the beds were nice but other parts of the hostel were a bit run down. The kitchen closes pretty early in the evening, and there was no free coffee.

Stayed here for 6 nights and had a fantastic first 4 days, clean rooms, friendly staff, and great location just minutes from public transport in the heart of Surfers Paradise. Unfortunately, the last two nights were disappointing. A group broke the no smoking/drinking rule and partied loudly all night in the room, which really affected the experience. The hostel should enforce these rules more strictly to protect the vibe for everyone. I’d return, but only if there’s a clear policy on maintaining a respectful atmosphere. Otherwise, great value overall.

Good location. Comfortable bed, but not really any built in designs to store your luggage easily. They do have lockers but they are super noisy when accessing at night. I feel they could definitely work on creating a better community atmosphere, as people here stick to themselves it’s not a very welcoming atmosphere if you’re looking to meet people. The hostel is really big, and lots of people have been living there a while so it’s a weird vibe. Probably wouldn’t stay there again as it wasn’t the best experience for me. I witnessed another guest who was super drunk in the common area just walk up and nearly start a fight, yelling and being obnoxious towards some other travellers who weren’t bothering him.
