The 7 Best Hostels in Australia (Updated 2025)

"I appreciated the location in Surfers Paradise — just a couple of blocks from the beach and near the bars and restaurants — and the hostel’s modern social facilities, including a pool, hot tub, and sundeck. The bunk beds feel almost like separate pods with privacy curtains, reading lights, and two power sockets; all rooms (including dorms) have ensuite bathrooms and balconies, there’s a massive guest kitchen, and note that there is an age cap (35 or under) to stay here." - Matthew Kepnes

I love this hostel. It’s so clean in the room and my bed. No stink. Also I can get anywhere easily by 2 mins walking to the tram then enjoy or 4 mins to the Cavill Ave at night which is my favourite night. Love this

When we first arrived at the hostel, I actually had high hopes. We had booked one of the Deluxe Rooms, and at first glance, it really did look nice — spacious, modern, and with a private bathroom. The room itself was definitely the best part of our stay and probably the only thing that lived up to the photos online. Unfortunately, that impression didn’t last long. The room hadn’t been cleaned before we arrived, and we could tell right away that the bathroom was in terrible condition. The sink and shower were dirty, and the toilet was honestly disgusting. I went to the reception to mention it, and while someone came up to “clean,” it didn’t really make a difference — it was just as gross afterward. To make matters worse, the Deluxe Rooms are located directly above a bar that plays loud music until around 11:30 p.m. So if you’re a light sleeper or looking for a quiet night’s rest, this is definitely not the right place for you. After spending some time in the room, we decided to check out the common areas — and that’s when things got even more disappointing. The shared kitchen was in an awful state: dirty counters, unwashed dishes piled up, and a generally unpleasant smell. The communal toilets were no better — they were filthy and really uncomfortable to use. Overall, the hostel had potential, especially with the design and layout of the Deluxe Rooms, but the lack of cleanliness and poor maintenance ruined what could have been a great experience. It’s such a shame, because with proper cleaning and management, this place could actually be quite nice.

The air on in our room was on but couldn’t feel it at all. Also fell ill after sleeping there, bad cough etc. beds were uncomfortable (could feel springs in the mattress). Outside our was room was straight onto the street and it was very loud including the pool area as people were singing. Downstairs was a lovely area though and staff were friendly. Only stayed one night.

Jen the German is the sweetest at the front desk. Super helpful upon opening and efficiently handles requests. Just saw her shake the snack machine to get someone’s snacks un-stuck. Very knowledgeable and tends to needs.

Great place, in a 6 bed shared dorm, bunk bed are nice sectioned off for some privacy, room was clean and so was the bathroom. Upsides: Good staff Great pool and hot tub Good communal area, pool tables, seating outdoors ect Great location near the beach. Downsides: Only I bathroom in 6 share dorm, Lift is very slow Overall would recommend

Great location for bus terminal (less than 5 min walk). Large communal spaces and clean facilities. Beds in a 4 bed dorm are fairly private but lighting isn’t brilliant; we had to use our torch when organising things on the floor by the bed. 25% off Goldies (attached restaurant) whilst staying in Bunk (including alcohol) but wouldn’t recommend eating there, seemed to just be frozen meals warmed up rather than cooked fresh.

Genuinely amazed at the state of the kitchen after coming from Byron where the kitchen was always so spotless, I understand that the upkeep is put onto the guests to some degree but there’s clearly no regular cleaning or proper rules in place to maintain cleanliness. Whole pots of food left out not a clean pan to use. Considering you pay so much for your stay it seems like the bare minimum to maintain a clean area for people to cook. Otherwise the room itself is fine and plenty of place to socialise.

Yelp
It was one of the best hostels I have stayed in Australia! Well located, close to the beach, restaurants and shops. Good infrastructure: living room with TV/books, kitchen and appliances, swimpool, lift, bike rental, tour agency. Comfy matress, individual plugs and lights in each bed, lockers, AC, rubish, and clean room/batroom. Free brekkie: toast, butter/jam, peanut butter, tea, instant coffee, cereals, milk. In addition, the shape of bunk beds give you a bit more of privacy as you don't face the bed besides you.
