23 Places to Relive the Cold War

"This bomb shelter was originally built by the Germans around World War II. When the war was over and Czechia (at the time Czechoslovakia) came under Soviet influence, the bunker was taken over by the People’s Army and planned to be a top secret hideout in the case of nuclear war. The underground structure was intended primarily for local government elites under the communist regime, capable of housing a maximum of 500 people for around three days and nights. Today it is open to the public as a retro hotel, and not much has been changed from the original look. Rooms still have the original bunk beds and half-century-old phones to contact the reception area. It is a unique opportunity to get a real in-person experience of a life in shelter. And in case of nuclear war, entry and accommodation are provided for free. Let’s hope that there will never be a need to serve this original purpose." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

If you’re after a great-value hostel that throws in breakfast and doubles as a museum (which you can wander for free), don’t think twice. It’s fascinating—authentic without feeling like it’s performing for tourists. The showers were basic but spot-on for the era, a proper trip back to the Soviet 60s. The bunk bed was surprisingly comfy, and the hefty sleeping bags hit that sweet spot between army-issue and cosy. Brought back some solid old memories.

Very interesting and the staff were extremely helpful and welcoming. A must vist for anyone interested in the WW2 and/or Cold War history of Czechoslovakia. What is particularly unusual about the Bunker is how interactive it is. Being able to hold and touch exhibits is very satisfying. 10/10

An exhilarating experience, spending the night in a nuclear bunker 25 meters underground, knowing it's bound to be on a map somewhere... The staff is very helpful, the facilities are otherwise fine, but it's still a '40 - '50 bunker, which makes it a challenging experience. For example the gurgling air conditioning, the layout with the underground corridors and dated furniture. You'll have a complete breakfast included. Highly recommended if you dare.

!! I ONLY EXPERIENCED THE MUSEUM AND NOT THE HOTEL I really liked this place. It is very interactive, making the time spent there amazing. Me and my group could wear coats from that period along with an army cap. We could also touch everything that was placed, especially: play with the radio machines, old piano, open med kits and look inside of them.

What a unique experience in Brno! The bunker room was clean, comfortable and rather spacious. We found the temperature pleasantly cool, especially enjoyable during summer. Although the toilet and shower were shared with other rooms, they were clean too. Wifi worked fine. Both the entrance fee for visiting the museum and a breakfast were included. Mind you that you need to be at the breakfast area early in order to enjoy the full spread. What makes this place so much more than the sum of all those mentioned? The friendly and helpful staff! Don't miss this if you're in Brno. I won't hesitate to stay there again if I revisit Brno.

This is such a hostel, you cannot miss from your list. We stayed with a group of 50 students for 5 days Pro’s: - Sleeping was really nice, because when you enter it’s immediately dark. As a student such a bed is fine for 5 days, but for a normal family I recommend 1/2/3 days sleeping here. - Breakfast was really tasty! - free entry to the cool museum Con’s: - Loud airconditioning in some rooms :( - No parking space nearby

Amazing WWII bunker experience! Staff in military uniforms really get into character. Don't expect luxury - shared bathrooms, bunk beds, spartan conditions - but that's the whole point. The historical immersion is incredible and makes for a truly memorable stay. Perfect for history buffs looking for something completely different!

4.5 stars, Highly recommended for one night, for novelty! The only issue is the showers, it is a fun novelty once but not suitable for a long stay. There is nowhere to put your clothes when you shower, and they are mixed gender bathrooms, so don't stay here if you are concerned about bathroom privacy. The showers are also only slightly warm. This is all part of the experience! Just be mentally prepared. Aside from this, I found the military-style mattress with sleeping bag actually very comfortable, I had a very good sleep. It is cold inside the bunkers and no heating available, be prepared for that with layers. The museum part of the bunker was very cool to look through. Breakfast is a small, simple buffet where you can make your own chlebičky, toast, granola, and tea/coffee, with some fresh fruit. I also enjoyed this part of the experience. Overall I highly rate this as a cool, different experience in Brno!
