BunkHouse Hostel & DnB Bar

Not a bad, cheap place to stay if you want somewhere cheap in Cardiff! You're paying for a hostel room, and if you're expecting this, you'll be more than happy. Mattresses are a bit hard (very subjective of course) but is otherwise sleepable. The bunkbeds do creak and the doors slam quite loudly (comes with the hostel territory, pun not intended) The DnB bar bass sound does come through, so if you're a light sleeper/get disturbed by noise, you'll need earplugs (or potentially need to stay elsewhere!) Keep in mind you *need* to have internet to be able to access the hostel doors, the hostel does have a free WiFi you can use when near to the premises. On the stay, had someone trying the doors to get in and knock on the dormitory doors (individually locked) at 5 in the morning, but the out of hours number supplied was responded to quickly and someone came up to check what was going on. Facilities get cleaned daily, basic but serviceable, hot shower and lockable toilets along with a decent common room you can hide in for a bit.

Booked this place through booking.com, turned up and they didn't have the correct beds available, this was the night before the Cardiff half marathon and the cheapest room anywhere near the city centre cost £414 (we know cause we ended up staying there). The staff and management were extremely unhelpful and seemed to think that this was a perfectly fine issue to have and like it occurs regularly. It was early evening, the bar music was deafening and there wasn't a single person in the bar, seems pointless to me. The toilets and showers were run down and rough and the whole place is fairly horrible. It's cheap though, so you get what you pay for.

No kitchen, but nice sitting area. It was safe and clean, in a good location, but zero interaction with any staff- the key system is on your phone so make sure you have access to your email! The bathroom was always super cold and showers are awkward. Rooms were simple with bunk beds. I felt completely safe during my stay (in the 4 bed female room) but it was just a weird set up…I don’t know. The lockers under the bed made so sense and didn’t lock haha. No idea what the space was before a hostel.

I wouldn't personally go there again. The staff is not particularly unfriendly but they definitely perform their job with a sense of indifference. The lock to my room was broken and they couldn't repair it. So they just told me to get a lock in the shop down the street to lock up my stuff under the bed.|To be fair the manager expressed he was sorry for this inconvenience but on the other hand did he do nothing to effectively compensate for the circumstances or offer a compensation in any way.|One women of the staff told me "maybe it's good because when I arrive at the room drunk I can't lock myself out at least". So that kind of explains for what a clientele this place is meant to be I think.|So when you just want a place to stay after a heavy night out and give no value on hygiene, which is disgustingly bad there, you will probably be fine, since it is to be fair the cheapest hostel in Cardiff. But for anyone else I would highly recommend investing a few more bucks and stay away from there. I however am glad I only booked one night there

Fine hostel, decently clean but facilities are very basic, and staff completely absent. Pretty dodgy people staying in the large mixed room, including an all-day bed alcoholic, and a man shouting about nazis at 2am who proceeded to vomit in his bed, leaving the room with an unpleasant stench. The entrance to the hostel is within a DnB club as stated, with an extremely strange customer base of aggressive old geezers. Wouldn't recommend staying here.

Absolutely loved this, ive never stayed in a hostel before. We had a bit of trouble trying to get in with the pass key to start, staff weren't very helpful to start , watched us struggle fir a good half hour!! But once in it was brilliant, we went to a concert,and instead of going out around cardiff after we went back to hostel to drink with fellow travellers. Staff were so lovely in the morning, the cleaners were a great laugh and helped with all our queries. Definitely recommend 👌

Dirty bathrooms with no toilet roll, clogged sinks, hairy showers and mouldy walls - does not appear to be cleaned with any regularity. The noise from the generators outside is incredibly disturbing at night with only the thinnest windows. The hostels only saving grace is its location which is incredibly central and within easy walking distance of all Cardiff’s main attractions like the castle and museum. If you’re only staying for one night you could probably put up with these problems, but the absolute state of the bathrooms means that anything longer would be unbearable.

Easily the biggest issue is the system used to get in and out of the building or any of the facilities. They send you a digital key on your phone that doesn’t work consistently even on a good day and God help you if your battery dies. The first night I was here, I almost had a panic attack because I couldn’t work out how to get in, meaning I had to call the staff. Being neuro-divergent, phone calls are one of my biggest triggers and it was an intensely uncomfortable situation just to get in the building. Then the door to my room didn’t work through the night, meaning we had to keep it propped open or risk being locked out. Thankfully this was fixed, but this system is still incredibly flawed.

Attempting to find somewhere on a Saturday night in Cardiff that doesn't require a bodycon and 8 inch heels can sometimes be difficult. Which is probably one of the main reasons as to why, (despite being a hostel) Bunkhouse is my favourite bar. Aside from the Free Wi-Fi and amazingly Instagrammable décor - what I love most about Bunkhouse is that you can wear Skinny Jeans and Flats without feeling like the girl who has forgotten her P.E kit. They have board games, books, a pop-up cinema and they serve their hot chocolate with Nutella and toasted marshmallows - What more could you want from a Saturday night?! Note, If you are planning on staying in the Hostel you can book a bed from as little as £15 per night and a basic breakfast including tea, coffee, cereal, toast and jam is included. Linen is also included and there are lockers provided underneath each bed.

The Bunk House is situated smack bang in the centre of Cardiff on St Mary Street and is not just a hostel. I love this place and often pop in on my lunch break for a coffee as the bar is open to the general public regardless of whether you are staying in the hostel rooms which are located upstairs. One of the reasons I like this place so much is that when you walk in off of the street you notice immediately the calm and relaxed atmosphere. You won't find a sleek modern designer yuppie bar here, all of the furniture has an antique, old fashioned feel and you will notice yesteryear items around that give the bar a grannies attic appeal. The staff here are extremely friendly and have a varied taste in music which you will notice is playing in the background, adding to the atmosphere. I think I could happily spend all day here simply drinking coffee and working on my laptop. On top of that, the accommodation is great value offering beds from only £15 per night. When you realise the cost of a bed in the heart of the capital can cost you as much as 4 times that amount, or even more, you can't deny that they offer excellent value for money.

Location - Fantastic Facilities - Good Staff - rude, unhelpful, hostile I came here with a large group, and we were met with hostility by the management and all but one of the hostel's staff. The Bunkhouse is a great idea, but the staff let it down.
