21 Best Bars in Tokyo, from Hotel Lounges to a Tequila Speakeasy | Condé Nast Traveler

"Bunon, a quirky natural-wine specialist in quiet Nishi-Azabu, has atmosphere in spades. Located in a renovated Japanese house with whimsical, fan-shaped windows cut into the walls and beautifully carved wooden transoms, the bar inspires nostalgia for a time that we’ve never known but miss nonetheless. Lofted second-story seating looks down on the varnished timber bar below. The tables are a squeeze but we wouldn’t dream of sitting elsewhere." - Melinda Joe

Set in a beautifully restored traditional house, Bunon, a natural wine bar in Nishi-Azabu, may be my favorite find of the trip. The wood-accented interior was a calming setting for decompressing after a long day of grazing. And even better than the atmosphere was the wine list, which featured gorgeous natural wines from Japan!!!

Bunon natural wine restaurant and bar in Tokyo is a true gem, where the impressive traditional architecture of the converted house is complemented by a remarkable selection of natural wines. The enchanting atmosphere, a fusion of classic design and modern elements, creates a welcoming setting for guests to explore the vast and carefully curated wine offerings. Wooden beams and intricate craftsmanship pay tribute to the building's rich history, while the artful interior design further enhances the overall experience. Despite it not being long since my last visit, the memory of the exquisite dining experience at this architectural marvel still lingers vividly in my mind. The great natural wine selection, meticulously chosen to pair with the ever-evolving menu, brings together a symphony of flavors that cater to even the most discerning palate. As I eagerly anticipate my next visit to Bunon, I look forward to once again indulging in the unique sensory journey that the combination of their beautiful setting, genuine hospitality, and exceptional wine selection so masterfully provides.

Cozy wine bar with great menu, very unassuming location, just off a busy street in Roppongi. The sashimi and waygu beef were fantastic along with a number of small appetizers. Japanese menu only but friendly staff willing to work with non-Japanese speaking customers

Bunon definitely is a hidden gem in Tokyo where you get this beautiful old japanese house with a wide selection of nature wines, a perfect mix of japanese and western comfort. It’s unlike any European-style wine bars you’d have experienced. I was amazed to see the sommelier wears Kimono (how cool is that!) and how well those japanese dishes paired with the wines! This place is just funky! Full of charm!

A delightful restaurant in a traditional wooden house. They serve a fantastic range of food and mostly European wine from select producers. The shark heart sashimi was a particular highlight.

Amazing dishes and incredible service. The waitress sat down and explained the entire menu to us line by line in English. At the end of the night she ran to help us find a cab home. The wine was fabulous and we are very satisfied.

Super special and interesting wine selection and there is shark heart to eat. Very nice owner and great knowledge on wine.

The food is good - especially the sashimi - and really like the seasonality of the menu. But the service is amongst the worst I have ever experienced in Japan. Extremely understaffed for the amount of customers they are handling; food takes forever to arrive, to the point where 2 hours into our "meal" we still hadn't received half our order; the main staff in charge and her coworker seem completely stressed out; noticeable difference in service towards "regulars" vs. visitors (which is fine but when its so noticeable it leaves a bad taste in the mouth). It really pains me to give a place a bad review, and most times I don't even bother. But I do this only because it's the kind of experience that could really leave ruin a night, if not your entire trip to Japan (if you're coming from abroad), especially if you go in with high expectations, or plan on this being a "special" meal. I really hope I just went there on a bad day, and I sincerely appreciate anyone that runs a restaurant given all the work it involves. But this is my personal experience and I felt the need to share. (ps. I speak fluent Japanese so it's not like that was a factor).

Got a few small plates of picked veggies, a mixed plate of sashimi, and two glasses of wine. Somehow came out to $70! No prices listed but we feel like we got ripped off for as much as we ordered. Plates also came out at weird intervals. The interior was quite nice however. Overall just not the most friendly place for foreigners. Plenty of better options in this city.

Yelp
Bunon. Means drink up. High end izakaya so lots of tasty small dishes. Has very nice food and great bio wines. Staff are a little surly but speak better English than they let on. Only giving four stars because one time I went and ordered omakase and I think it was overpriced. But not a bad pick for your fancy izakaya slot.
