The Best Drive-In Experiences this Summer, From Drag Shows to Music Festivals

"Denver-based Buntport Theater premiered The Grasshoppers, a spin on a nature documentary, on a strip of lawn outside their Lincoln Park venue in June; audiences listened to a pre-recorded script using their cell phones. The production was so successful that the troupe has added another 10 shows starting on September 2."

We had such a great experience at Buntport Theater that I wanted to share. We saw “The Book Handlers” and the audience was laughing throughout. They run the theater as a non profit and instead of setting ticket prices ask people to donate as they see fit for their tickets. A unique model and great team of performers… Definitely worth supporting so check them out!

The show was so funny and the set is clever. Everyone was friendly. I highly recommend opening the mirror in the bathroom.

I came here to see a production of Jane/Eyre. The theater is a hidden gem. The costumes were terrific. The script was true to the book with nice modern touches. There was a reception prior to the performance with food, a fortune teller, and a costume contest. Although the parking lot was small, there was plenty of free street parking.

This is the best theater in Denver. Always a witty, intelligent, thought provoking, funny, and entertaining show. The show that just closed was one of their best.

I hope they bring more magic shows like the one with my pals Evan and Nate. The theater is amazing and I’m confident you’ll love any show you see there.

I love Buntport, they’re so creative and offer wonderful shows. A talented, deeply caring group of folks.

The Buntport is truly the best. Check out The Narrators every third Wednesday. Every play has been a memorable experience. I never know what to expect, but I always love what they come up with. Work them into your date nights. It’s a great time to support your local theatre!

Google
Buntport *always* delivers an amazingly great show. I saw “Eyes Up Mouth Agape” last night; I’m still laughing, and will be for a long, long time. This small group of theater creators is consistently fantastic. Go there now!

Yelp
It was really nice I got to hear about 20 minutes early and there was open bar with wine and lots of cookies and carrots and celery with dip and then some water it was really nice. Show started later than scheduled but that's pretty usual in the theater well maybe not just maybe local theaters

Yelp
Limited parking next to building + street parking. Spare space with black curtains from ceiling to floor with minimal set design. The are an avant-garde theatre with changing playwrights. They have 6 rows of padded seats on both sides of the performance space for this production. This play was titled Willy/Nicky based on historical correspondence between Kaiser Wilhem of Germany and Czar Nicholas of Russia (both were cousins and grandchildren of Queen Victoria of England). It covers the time period before, during and after World War I. It included the "Mad Monk" Rasputin. Lots of sexual innuendo with Rasputin portrayed as a draq queen. A funny and thought provoking play.

Yelp
Had an all around delightful experience at the Bunkport Theater for the performance of The Belle of Amherst by Clover and Bee Productions. This is an intimate theater space so every seat is great. They even offered complimentary drinks before the performance (and for this production, there was a special surprise after the show). The acting was top-notch! I will be following Clover and Bee Productions and the Bunkport Theater for future shows.

Yelp
The original production of "Tommy Lee Jones goes to the opera alone", a life size puppet as Tommy, tells you all you need to know about the Buntport Theatre. This is a bizarre, highly intellectual, and creative little theater that is not afraid to experiment with bizarre choices of topics. I have to say it was absolutely brilliant! It was clear that the script for this play was so well thought out by some quite intellectual genius. The theater has a very laid-back approach from ticketing to entrance. Tickets can be done online but you will pay through PayPal or pay that when you get there- no cash! No physical ticket will be emailed to you, rather your name will be on the list at the door. Our performance was actually sold out so I do recommend purchasing tickets ahead. Doors are not open until about 10 minutes before the performance started so we all stood in the cold January night outside waiting. So don't get there too early! But do get there early enough because seats are general admission and you're going to want to sit in the front row, hands-down. Finally, the seating was just terrible for me and it would be the only reason I do not go to another production there. I am about 5'9" and the seats were crammed and uncomfortable: I could not cross/uncross my legs and I was very uncomfortable the whole time, physically pressed up to a woman who was coughing and sneezing and, so next time I would sit in the front row and not be bashful about it. I did not see any snacks or beverages. There was a whole Lotta coughing going on in the audience and it would've been nice to have a drink or water... Minor creature comfort spring this review down to four for me for an otherwise amazing creative tour du force.

Yelp
I can't believe I just now made it to Buntport! What a wonderful theater. Buntport's crew is made up of six folks (plus some volunteers at the door, it seems) who create their works - the writing, staging, direction... the whole deal. And what they create seems to be pretty darn great! We went tonight to see Tommy Lee Jones Goes to Opera Alone, and the whole audience seemed to enjoy it a great deal. It was like nothing I've seen in theater yet, which is pretty tough to do. The show was creative, funny, and certainly left me with a lot to think about (and made me want to see more by Puccini than La Boheme). Once you're in, with your $16 ticket ($13 if you're a student or a senior), they've got snacks and drinks out - for a donation of your choosing. There's beer, coffee, water, some excellent chocolate, and I don't know what else. Lots of stuff. The theater itself is seven or eight rows of stadium-style seating in front of a good sized stage. There definitely isn't a bad seat in this house. And, based on all the past reviews - here on Yelp and in the Post - there may not be a bad show, either.

Yelp
These people never fail to provide me with a good time and a novel experience that challenges my perspectives. And the EMOTIONS. So many EMOTIONS. Fabulous.

Yelp
Wonderful Group! I saw their production of Sweet Tooth, an original production, and it was amazing! It is such a good space and they seem to run it well. There were snacks and drinks for donations and good snacks too! Very accommodating. The show itself was marvelous! It was well written, wonderfully acted with great characters and had great songs. They play with some great ideas and techniques. I loved it in the rock climbing expedition when the Erin, wearing a headlamp, approached the crowd in complete darkness. Great effect! There were well placed ideas throughout the whole production that toyed with the audience in the best ways. It was all a very entertaining evening. Support this Place!

Yelp
I love this place! Clever shows that are hilarious and very well written. I always leave wanting to rewatch so I can process all of what they present. I am impressed every time I go. A fun, unique, reasonable priced thing to do in Denver!

Yelp
I recently saw an episode of Starship Troy at the Buntport and now I kind of wish I had seen every episode. Theses shows are about 50 minutes long, which is awesome for my non-theater loving boyfriend (he gets bored shortly after an intermission). They are basically like a sitcom based in outer space. And they are hilarious. The thing I really appreciated was how well every scene was portrayed even though the set was really bare-bones. I mean there really isn't any props or background set other than a giant screen and maybe a bench. So, the actors here are super talented in the fact that they can tell a story quite well and entertain an audience thoroughly on their own merit. Another thing I thought was cool was that they have something similar to the "Trouble bubble." Remember that game where you popped the bubble to roll the dice? Well, here you pop it and whichever number appears - 5, 6 or 7 - is the price you pay for admission to the show, for the Starship Troy series anyway. The theater is fairly small so there aren't any bad seats. And they have sodas and snacks on the donation method so if you want a Snickers and a Welch's Grape make sure you have cash to put in their jar. I'm excited that Denver has theaters like this and I'm looking forward to seeing what other shows they offer in the near future.

Yelp
Whenever anyone tries to say Denver is a "cow-town" without any culture, I immediately point to Buntport Theater. These guys and gals are grassroots theater that started with nothing but passion, hardwork and talent. And now they regularly sell out performances of some of the best, weirdest and most challenging theater anywhere. The theater is truly world-class. It's high-brow. It's intellectual. But it's also silly and doesn't take itself seriously. Where else but Buntport would you find a psychological realist stage biography of Franz Kafka done on ice-skates? Or a bizarre post-modern musical (with surprisingly catchy music!) about a magical rabbit and his disfigured assistants? And of course Buntport has numerous arts and cultural events and supports the efforts of some great local children's and experimental theater. Best of all, Denver supports and appreciates Buntport after nearly a decade and a half of bizarre but brilliant work.

Yelp
I know the Buntport gang pretty well (even got to do a little cameo in a Starship Troy episode... wish there was a place on my resume for that) and have seen a bunch of their shows. They're always smart, funny, original and welcoming. NOTHING pretentious here. Donor names are written in Sharpie on the bathroom wall. Draught beer is self-service by donation. The audience member on your right is 76, the one on your left is in high school. And depending on the show, and your luck, you may only be out around $6. ALSO: If you have kids, check out "Trunks". It's the brainchild of a friend and winner of a Westword Mastermind Award.

Yelp
I've lived in the area for years and didn't know about this neighborhood gem. What a great idea for a night out! Small theater with unusual offerings, talented actors, and friendly service. I came recently on an opening night and they served bite sized desserts and brews to the patrons! I'm going to bookmark their site so I can be up-to-date and in-the-know.

Yelp
If I could give buntport 6 stars, I would. A great place to see original theater of the highest quality that will make you think and laugh. Their childrens show tRUNks is a great way to get kids interested in Theater and their other shows will make anyone a theater lover. Also don't forget to check out their third Tues programs: Pecha Kucha, Teacher's Pet and Buntport vs - you'll be glad you did!

Yelp
Buntport is a hidden, and I do mean hidden, gem for live theatre. We received free tickets to a murder mystery comedy play that I can't remember the title of... and the show itself was quite well done. It started out pretty poorly, but really picked up and ended up being quite entertaining. The performance was definitely 4.5 to 5 stars. The location is definitely a bit lacking. Without being shown this place, I would never have known that it existed. It is very out of the way and inside a building that looks like a very nondescript warehouse. It's the kind of place that you'd expect Fight Club to be filmed. As far as I could tell there was absolutely no signage indicating that this was indeed a theatre. The seating is also a tad cramped, and not overly comfortable. It was also quite hot inside. The donation method of paying for snacks and drinks is very cool, though I could see how the segment of society that subscribes to the church of douchebaggery could easily take advantage of such a generous system. I put in $6 for a couple of beers, though I certainly could have used a few more considering how hot it was. Now that I know that this place exists, I will probably come back for another show.

Yelp
I am so glad there is now an educational team at Buntport Theater! For a small theater company, ten seasons is an admirable accomplishment; to be able to have the creators of Trunks produce more works that can travel to schools and enhance any arts program is wonderful. I have always been a huge fan of the intelligent, playful and accessible spirit that has made Buntport Theater a success over the past nine years. When I went to go see Unbe-weave-able, it was clear that the educational team fully embraces the smart and humorous approach to live performance that Buntport is famous for. Well written and full of innovative costume and set surprises throughout the program, Unbe-weave-able is a show that makes Greek mythology fun and comprehensive. I wish this production existed when I was learning about Zeus and Hera. Instead, I had the worst Unified Studies teacher ever, who managed to make learning about Greek mythology boring. Whaaaat?! I know. I walked away from tonight's performance thinking, "I am so grateful that creativity like this exists in Denver! I want to share it with the kids I work with!" The educational team at Buntport are professional creatives, mos def.

Yelp
Intimate theater with amazing people who create an amazing experience. We saw Smokefall and it was wonderful. I definitely would recommend this theater to all.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I went to the Buntport Theater on Saturday for the closing night of My Hideous Progeny, which was loosely based on events in Mary Shelley's life. Wow! It was such a good show! They are easily the most creative group of people I've ever been lucky enough to see perform. I've seen several productions at Buntport (some more than once) and always thoroughly enjoyed the evening, and last night was definitely not an exception. I loved the way they wove some of the darker parts of Frankenstein with events in her life, as well as a cool interpreted take on the back story to her writing it. If you're not familiar with that story it's worth looking into on its own. I'm consistently impressed with how the six members of Buntport can take a story or event that's reasonably well known, run it through their combined brains, and end up with something that has all the best aspects of theatre. It's real art, up close an personal, and you'll leave feeling better than you did when you got there. I can't wait to see Kafka on Ice, which is next on their Calendar. I've heard it's amazing! And I'm hoping for a remount of Musketeer!!
google avatar

Yelp
The best. Find a bad review somewhere--I DARE you! Funny, insightful, original. The 6 members are all creative, but together--it is brilliance. If you're lucky enough to live in Denver, or just there on the right day, also check out their third tuesday shows! Also, if you happen to be a buntport newbie, and don't really care for a show--try again later (the tickets *are* insanely cheap). They do a pretty broad range of show types. If you don't like 2 of 2 shows, well... that's just crazy talk--it's impossible!

Yelp
I've seen "Kafka on Ice" here twice--a brilliant, original production by a very talented group of performers. Both times my guest(s) and I left with big smiles on our faces. After the first time I saw them perform (many years ago), one of my friends was so entertained and excited that he went on to volunteer for the group. The second time I went with a university professor of literature and he was very impressed by how much homework the writer's did in creating "Kafka on Ice," and really enjoyed the creativity and humor as well. I'm looking forward to returning to see a different production soon. I definitely recommend checking them out!

Yelp
Buckets and buckets and buckets of talent is how I would describe Buntport Theater. I'm not much of a theater buff (at all), but I do know that every time I come here I have a good time. It's like they've bottled the essence of fun and spritzed it all around the room. I don't even need to know the details of the show I'm going to see here, I can actually just trust that it will be a blast. My only regret is that I don't come here more often. Where else in Denver can you sit back with a cup of keg beer and a bag of Cheetos and watch some of the most original theater anywhere?
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
The Buntport is as good as it gets for original theater. I have been going regularly since around 2002, and they never cease to amaze me with their creativity and originality. Most of the time it is funny. But I mean really ,really funny. All of the time it is creative. Both in script and scenery, presentation and exection. It is hard to describe the breadth of what they do here and the passion with which they do it, but I don't think you will be dissapointed with anything you go see. We are lucky to have a quality independent production like Buntport in Denver.
google avatar

Carmel M.

Yelp
This place earns my respect and support every day of the week. I love their third Tuesday shows and love the traveling shows that come through. They are dedicated to their craft, and it is such a fun night out with friends or great date spot.

Marc H.

Yelp
Excellent group of creatives with potential to take over the world. I hate musicals & they made one that I couldn't stop singing! Theater doesn't get much better than this place!
google avatar

Yelp
Buntport is such a great venue to see many original productions. I just saw Kafka on Ice and have to admit that telling the story of Franz Kafka's life while on skates is something to be seen. The Trunks shows on Saturdays are hilarious and I find myself laughing out loud with my kids everytime we go.

Teresa M.

Yelp
I just attended Middle Aged People Sitting in Boxes over the weekend, I've been going to this theatre on and off for several years now and I always have a fantastic time, they are so creative, talented and original, it's truly inspiring. I can't wait to start bringing the kids to this wonderful place

M.E. R.

Yelp
Buntport Theater is one of my favorite places in Denver. I have been attending their shows since the Magnets on the Fridge days. It is a true theatrical gem for a small city like Denver. The tickets are always reasonably priced and you are always guaranteed a good laugh and a great time at any of their shows. I highly recommend checking it out for a unique experience and a great time!
