Visited due to me watching the castle in Where Eagles Dare. Really awesome to see filming locations along with the true history of the castle. Great views of the mountains and Werfen below! Worth the excursion from Salzburg!!!

This is a very old, but well-preserved fortress. Both adults and children will find Burg Hohenwerfen interesting and entertaining. Being a photographer, I have immensely enjoyed the views from the fortress and the magic of golden autumn 🤩 Importantly, there is a restaurant in the fortress, which makes a visit extremely pleasant 😃

Burg Hohenwerfen is one of the most interesting and majestic fortresses I have seen. Built on a high rock, the fortress was an outpost on the way to Salzburg. Guided Tour is very interesting. The tour is conducted in German, but for representatives of other countries, there are audio guides in about one and a half dozen languages. Everything is very well organized. The tour guide himself is a very charismatic person and was liked by adults and especially children! You will see incredible views, hear a very interesting history of this fortress, and see a lot of interesting things inside, climb the highest tower of the fortress.  The ticket costs €15.40 (October 2024). Parking is available for cars and buses

Really nice castle with shows at 11.15 and 15.15 with Falcons. The best is to buy the tickets online and choose the time of the tour with a guide - audioguide is also available in a several languages so you don't have to know English or German language so good. Free parking. Lift to the castle is part of the entry ticket but you have to choose this option during buying of the ticket.

Definitely worth a stop if you are near Saltzburg. The castle museums detail the history of the grounds, falconry, and witchcraft in the region. A lot more than initially meets the eye. The hike up to the castle is a bit steep, but there is a elevator to the top if you want an easier trek up.

A great experience and well organised. Heidi was a great guide! Could possibly make more of the Where Eagles Dare film connection? Very clean and you could tell the guides loved working there!

Our visit to Burg Hohenwerfen was an unforgettable experience. The castle itself is incredibly impressive, standing majestically amidst the stunning Austrian landscape. We opted for the 20-minute walk up to the castle through the beautiful forested area, which added a sense of adventure and allowed us to enjoy the natural surroundings. The tour was fantastic, led by a knowledgeable and friendly guide who made the experience both informative and entertaining. Our 7-year-old particularly enjoyed the English kids tour, which was engaging and well-suited for younger visitors. We highly recommend it for families with children. While waiting for our tour to begin, we enjoyed a variety of activities such as ring toss and walking on stilts. These activities are great for keeping both kids and adults entertained. One thing to note is that the restaurant only accepts cash, which caught us off guard and was a bit inconvenient. However, the minor inconvenience didn't detract from our overall experience. The clock tower offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area, providing a perfect vantage point to take in the scenic beauty of the region. Overall, Burg Hohenwerfen is a must-visit. The combination of historical significance, beautiful surroundings, and family-friendly activities makes it an excellent destination. We highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

The tour to the top was great. The guide was very nice and told everything the audiotour guide told and a bit more. The bird show was also one of the highlights for me

Yelp
The entry fee is insane amount just to see the shop and the restaurant. And thats it pretty much. There are a few rooms open which are not exciting at all. The only way to see the castle if you pay a guided tour. Which is not a problem but they dont tell you this when you huy the ticket so you are pretty much screwed. All of the inside is closed!!! They run tours every hour or so. They should articulate better that they only meaningful way to see the castle is via the tour.

Yelp
We had a great afternoon at the Berg. We took a tour and there is even a falconry show if you get there in time to see it. Very entertaining. They also have a restaurant, gift shop, and a concession stand.

Yelp
This castle was scenic, and there was a lot to see in the area. I brought a tour here and was very impressed with the staff and the environment - there was a lot to do and the audio tour was quite enjoyable!

Yelp
I'm not really much of a history buff and confess the main reason I wanted to visit this place was the connection to the old Clint Eastwood movie Where Eagles Dare which was shot there in part. Certainly there were areas of the castle that I recognized from the movie but don't show up expecting the tour guide to be showing you where Clint killed his twelfth Nazi in the communications room. The reality is that the film has no recognition locally, possibly due to what is obviously a delicate subject matter for the locals. As a result the movie isn't mentioned one time on the tour. Shame as it is a decent attempt at a wartime story. The guide speaks only German on the tour but we knew this in advance. You are handed little phone sets (included in the standard charge) for your own language but it was a little heavy for our liking. The views are amazing from the castle though and possibly worth a visit on their own as you don't need to pay for the tour as well as the funicular ride up there. The falconry exhibition was interesting although we never really got the feeling they had full control of the birds themselves. This was confirmed when an errant falcon missed its target and ploughed into a young boy standing around. Tears were shed! Beware of the extensive walking involved on the tour and afterwards when hiking to the falconry area. It really does require at least a decent level of fitness.

Yelp
This castle is incredible my kids enjoyed the ice caves and the bird show but now a video game company called Trayarc or something is making a zombies version of the castle.

Yelp
this is a must-see! we took a train from salzburg to see the castle. it was rainy, which was disappointing but because of the weather our pictures came out spectacular - all the fog around the mountain and the fortress was just beautiful! From the train station it takes about 30-40min to get up to the castle. you pretty much have to walk a lot just to get to the foot of the castle, then u have to climb up. because it was raining, we decided to take the lift up instead of hiking, which was fine but the walk to the lift is still long. I would have liked to hike up there because im sure the view will be incredible on the way up. the fortress itself is very impressive. its rather big! we did the guided tour, which was interesting. I wouldn't have done it but if u wanna go inside the castle u have no other choice. if you do purchase tickets, be sure u stick around for the hawk show. its impressive to see.
