Pittsburgh Has a 3-day Pickle Festival—and You Can Ride a Mechanical Pickle, Eat Pickled Cannoli, and Enter a Pickle Juice Drinking Contest

"A local burger-and-milkshake chain noted for inventive concoctions; at the festival it served a pickled peachsicle milkshake that was surprisingly creamy, refreshing, and balanced—sweet but not cloying—showing how mainstream spots leaned into pickle-themed creativity." - Angela Lian Angela Lian Angela Lian was the editorial intern at Travel + Leisure. Pittsburgh was the first stop on our baseball tour and this place was recommended to us so we decided to give it a try and we were glad we did! We came it at 1100 on a Tuesday and I am glad we got there early. We were seated right away but by the time we were done there was a wait. We got Onion Rings for an appetizer and they were very good. Both me and grandson built our own burger and both were cooked perfectly and tasted great. I had a couple of the Hellagood IPA and it was very tasty and refreshing. Our waiter did a good job serving us. Overall it was a very pleasant lunch and we would come again if in the area.

Google
We hoped to eat here before an event at PNC Park but realized that was also everyone else's plan! It was packed when they kindly offered a 30-minute wait. We were able to walk the pier while we waited for their text for seating which worked great. We eventually learned the burger was worth the wait... unbelievably delicious. The atmosphere was great and was a heck of a start to a great night.

I heard trying out Burgatory is an absolute must when in Pittsburgh and it's very true! I loved everything I tried. I ordered the Wicked Wings with a side of blue cheese dressing, a custom burger with a side of fries and for dessert, the Salted Nutella Crunch milkshake. The wings had a wonderful spicy kick to them and the dressing was also delicious and not too overwhelming. The burger was indeed one of the best burgers I've tried and the milkshake was rich and such a delicious delight! The restaurant is situated at a popular Downtown area, with a cool atmosphere. Staff were friendly and attentive. The only downside which is not related to the restaurant is that parking was extremely difficult to find as all nearby parking options were full. Thank you! 😋

Google
Typically, my whole family loves Burgatory. We stopped in here on the 4th of July after the fireworks, and after ordering ten milkshakes, waited just over an hour and a half to receive them. They weren't that busy, still had a bunch of empty tables, and we watched many other customers arrive, eat meals, and leave. Really poor service brings this otherwise great place down a few notches.

Google
The menu is incredible and the burger I had was just awesome! Tried the onion rings as well and they rocked. Brandon was our awesome server and he steered us to some great menu items including shakes! I had a peanut butter shake that was OUT OF THIS WORLD!! Will definitely be back next time we in Pittsburgh!!!

Julie

Google
This was my second time eating at Burgatory on North Shore. I was seated at table 106. My waitress...she was super amazing and super friendly. She was constantly (not like, every five minutes) coming over to chat or to see if I'd like a refill of water or how I liked the food so far. The food was delicious and I can't get over how yummy the pale ale onion rings were. The size was perfect. The batter was perfect. I'll definitely be back.

Google
Great location in Northshore! Lots of good food options, nice waterfront views and the war memorials are there. Great service by Kyle on this visit; he was very knowledgeable on the menu! Burgers and shakes were on point!

Google
When we pulled up, it appeared that half the staff were outside smoking. The wait after we were seated was about 40 minutes. Service was slow, and our male waiter was obviously flirty towards our son-in-law which just made us all feel awkward. Food wasn’t that great! Burgers were mediocre; the best thing here was the milkshakes. I really wanted to like this place!

Yelp
My family sure does love Burgatory! There are several locations around Pittsburgh, but it is a "local" chain. From the milkshakes to creative alcoholic creations... to the BURGERS! There are vegetarian, vegan, buffalo, chicken, turkey, etc. anything you can really dream of! The service has always been alright. I wouldn't say anything spectacular, but attentive and just the right touch. I've taken out-of-town guests here a couple of times and they're always satisfied. Read the walls of the shop for some laughs!

Yelp
We stopped by the other week in the evening on a Wednesday for their wild game Wednesdays. Every Wednesday they have a new wild game burger and they listed off past options like camel! The inside has a large bar area with a good amount of booths and tables. There is also a small outside patio. Our server was super nice and personable and checked in on us at appropriate intervals. The shakes are HUGE and it's hard to drink one by yourself in one sitting. We did opt to get our shakes spiked so we weren't able to take them to go. The onion rings we got were enormous and delicious and so were our burgers. The portions were pretty big and I found myself taking home leftovers. Overall Burgatory is a solid spot to get a burger and I would come back.

Yelp
Food and service are great. Kids loved the Fruit Pebble milkshake. This review would be 5 stars if Burgatory had celiac dedicated fryers. We could not order a single appetizer because each one contained gluten or were fried in a cross contaminated fryer. Overall, amazing burgers and shakes!

Yelp
My son and I stumbled upon this place walking out of Pirate Stadium, and it was the most amazing meal I've had... we are visiting Pittsburgh, and only want to eat there!! Which is saying a lot!! The hard milkshakes are amazing, all from scratch, including the ice cream made on site. Let's talk drinks? Yum, my strawberry basil martini was delicious, and my son had a vanilla old school coke in the bottle, which is always a privilege to drink out of a glass Coke bottle... the onion rings were fresh, made there and cooked perfectly. The onions were cooked, but not soggy, and they were battered in-house, not from the freezer... and the burgers! Delicious! I'm going to make my own tomorrow... because they know what a rare burger is. Ever had a ceaser salad with fresh parm and fried parm? Now I have, and I'm not going back.

Yelp
The food was great. Their milkshakes were really flavorful and not too complex. Sometimes milkshakes can be too complicated and too sweet, but the s'mores milkshake was perfect. The double smashburger was great as well. I only gave this a 4 not because of the food, but because the side with the burger were chips rather than fries. I just struggle with paying $4 extra for fries when most burger places serve fries with their burgers. Also...the service was excellent. The waitress was aware and very kind as well as helpful. I would definitely eat there again.

Yelp
We came as a big group right before a Pirates game - the Pirates may suck but Burgatory sure doesn't! We were able to be seated as a group of 20 and enjoy our burgers in a timely fashion and with excellent service. I love all the options in the build your own burger sheet, and the milkshakes are EXCELLENT! You know it's a good place when they bring out your extras. All in all, would recommend for another outing or Pirates game all the way!

Yelp
Absolutely one of the best burgers I've ever had! Period. The restaurant is located on a popular street near the athletic centers and casino. Street parking was difficult and there were active meter readers patrolling the streets. I found a parking lot behind the row of restaurants that include Burgatory ($12). Navigating to the restaurant was simple and straightforward. My cousin and I were in town for a convention and found the warm welcome that we received pleasant. We were promptly seated although the restaurant was bustling. I created my own burger with the "Fiddy Fiddy" mix of ground beef and ground pork, a pretzel roll, LTM, onion and spicy ketchup. It was the perfect choice for me. The rosemary tossed fries were good too. Our waitress was kind, patient and helpful. If I'm ever in Pittsburgh again this will definitely be on the "must" list!

Yelp
Yinz starvin' for burgers n'at? Find yourself a Burgatory--a friendly little joint that whips up some of the best burgers and shakes around. With multiple locations across Pittsburgh, you're bound to have one nearby, and trust me, it's worth the visit. They've got a killer happy hour with house cocktail deals, craft drafts, and apps that won't hurt your wallet--which is always a win. There are burger and shake specials, plus tons of finger foods like chicken tenders, wings, fries, and salads. You'll also find signature burgers, custom creations, and other handhelds like Impossible burgers and tasty chicken options. Don't skip the sides--they've got some awesome ones--as well as floats, sodas, and those legendary shakes. To start things off, I tried the Señor Cheese--house-made queso topped with diced tomatoes and served with house-fried chips. Total munchie heaven. For the main event, I went with the Morty's Steakhouse burger: peppercorn-crusted beef, horseradish cheddar, caramelized and haystack onions, and a rich cabernet sauce. Absolutely packed with flavor. Their "Create Your Own" burger option also looked super slick--you get to build it exactly how you want with all the fixings. And of course, I couldn't leave without trying a shake. Got the Oreo Peanut Butter Pie Shake and... WOW. So dreamy and decadent, I'm still thinking about it. Can't wait to go back and try even more off their insane menu!

Yelp
Always a great stop before or after any sporting event on the north shore! I really enjoyed their fall seasonal sangria! And burgatory has some of my favorite onion rings... ever. They're perfectly crispy and flavorful every time. And I love the two dipping sauces! Also tried the nachos which were pretty solid as well. Service is always friendly as well, even in the hustle and bustle of game day.

Yelp
Found this place while on vacation with the family. Loved the atmosphere and the staff was very inviting and respectful. We all had burgers and they were awesome. Even the kids commented on how good they were. Next time we are in the Pittsburgh area we will be stopping back in to eat here. The onion rings were the best I've had in awhile, nice and crunchy.

Yelp
"Booze and ladies, keep me right As long as we can make it to the show tonight" (Grand Funk Railroad) Raise your hand if you like Boozy Shakes? Yeah, I thought you would. And you can sip your boozy shake in this very cool hipster kind of a joint. We shared a Caramel Pretzel Boozy Shake spiked with Caramel Vodka ($11). It was very good with a fun combination sweet & salty. After our big lunch at Primanti's we went easy on dinner and ordered Tony's Chicken Chili ($7) and a Farmhouse Salad ($11). I really enjoyed my large cup of chili topped with grated cheddar, chili sauce, and diced red onions. Bonus points for their big hunk of fresh and warm Jalapeño Cheddar Cornbread. The Salad was gorgeous - Baby Lettuces & Arugula tossed with Sunflower Seeds, Shaved Parmesan, Roasted Roma Tomatoes, Sweet Corn, Haystack Onions & Balsamic Vinaigrette. Our server Kayla was a joy - super funny, outgoing, helpful and just plain old super nice. We had a wonderful meal here.

Yelp
First visit at this Burgatory location. Usually I gravitate towards a burger and a shake. Today I chose something lighter, the Farm House Salad with added chicken breast. It was fabulous and hit the spot. It consisted of warm charred chicken, lettuce, arugula, corn, tomato, parmesan topped with Haystack onion and balsamic dressing. Service was good and fast and my server was pleasant. Definitely worth the visit.

Yelp
Very hip interior! Loved the atmosphere. Server was very nice. We had the Morty's Steakhouse Burger. Def a must if you like your taste buds dancing with joy. French fries were amazing as well. If you are close to PNS Park or just downtown Pittsburg, check it out!

Yelp
EVERYTIME I go here it is a RIDICULOUS wait, the first time I went it was busy so I understood but recently it was a slow Thursday night and it might have took an hour for my food!! The food was really good though

Penny S.

Yelp
Great food great service. I would recommend to anyone in the area. If you're going on a game day get there early.
google avatar

Melissa P.

Yelp
Good, like any Burgatory. I did specifically want to mention that the bar has some fun non-alcoholic cocktails now, which is nice. I'm not much of a drinker, but it was fun to be able to sip on something fruity and creative that didn't have the booze. Mine used imitation gin and some berry flavors -- very tasty.

Yelp
I am so happy a buddy (thanks Dan) told me to go here, while visiting the Burgh! Cool vibe and good service. Amazing burger! I had the Triple "B." Bison with house made queso, bacon, tomato, pickled jalapeños on a pretzel bun. Great burger, with killer house chips. Had a Choco's Taco for dessert! Best shake I have ever had! Vanilla ice cream, crushed waffle cone, fudge, peanuts and chocolate chips! I was in heaven!

Yelp
This place SUCKS the salt on the fries taste to bad I had to throw up. The person next to me was crying and complaining. The food is just not good to

Lesley C.

Yelp
The burger was fantastic! We both opted for the "custom creation" burger. I chose the Waygu and my friend chose the hormone free beef. They were exactly the way we ordered everything and the sides were good, too. Ordered an " adult" milkshake for dessert. There was no way I could finish it, but it was delicious. The waitress was attentive and helped us with our choices since we were first timers.
google avatar

Kelli C.

Yelp
I have always been a huge Burgatory fan! Their food always hits the spot and they always have so many options. They change specials frequently so you always can try new things. The smash burger at Picklesburgh was iconic!!!!
google avatar

Andreina S.

Yelp
Delicious burgers and a couple of vegetarian options which is hard to find in a great burger place! Their California slaw was tasty as well as their chips and fries. Having the option to build your own burger was also fun and there were lots of topping and dressing options. The server was great, helpful and friendly. Food came out in a timeline manner, the ambiance was great too! Lots of TVs to keep the kids entertained watching the Olympics. The option to pay the build on your phone is extremely convenient and user friendly.

Yelp
Our server was awesome! All three of the staff members I interacted with were friendly and helpful. I had the Impossible burger with fries and a small vegan peanut butter milk shake. It was to die for!!! Super duper thick shake with lots of pb flavour, and the whole meal was so filling even I couldn't eat it all! The staff was exceptionally careful and concerned with my lover's allergy upon being notified of it. We sat outside in the nice weather, they played good tunes and the heaven & hell theme is just fun. The food came out within a reasonable time considering we were seven people! Also the bathrooms were clean. All around excellent. Thank you Burgatory!

Yelp
Stopped here after a suggestion from an employee at the Puttery. We couldn't haven't been more happy with our decision! The food was delicious and I really liked the option to Build Your Own Burger but there was soooooo many choices so it was difficult to put something together. The onion rings were delicious and I really enjoyed the nachos until I hit the chili on them. The milkshake was a 11/10. That was the best thing i've ever drank!!! Our server was very patient and helpful when it came to the menu! The location was super easy to navigate and I loved how close it was to Heinz Field. I'm sure that place is packed on game day but we were able to find parking with no issue on a Wednesday Night in the summer. The restaurant was pretty quiet inside but they had great decor and a solid playlist going on. If i'm ever in the city again, i'll definitely be back!!

Lj S.

Yelp
Horrible service. I had family from out of town who wanted to go. I was told 30 minutes for a table, and they would text me when ready, 15 minutes later I recieved a confirmation text, I checked with the hostess who seemed surprised I received a text she then told me they had to clean a table for our party, and they would text me when ready. We waited another 30 minutes, still no table. After an hour of waiting and no text we left. A day later I'm still waiting on my text. We got the point. Maybe we were too dark for their ambiance...

Yelp
It was an interesting experience. We went around opening. There were a few people seated, but not many. We opted to eat inside since it was quite cold. The server was nice, the shake was okay, but I custom built my burger and it was mediocre. Also my husband's burger wasn't that great either. I would say that this is a place to grab something to eat if there is absolutely nothing else, but I probably wouldn't venture here again. Not really my cup of tea.
google avatar

Julie T.

Yelp
Custom burger made your way with great fries. The only reason I did not give 5 stars was because of the service. I would have liked my drink refilled more timely.
google avatar

Isaiah G.

Yelp
We were in the area and decided to stop by on a Saturday around 5. We were seated in the back. We ordered 2 smalls shakes and 4 hamburgers. I was surprised it came with chips and not French fries. I asked for my hamburger to be cooked medium and it was completely overcooked. The milkshakes were a 5 star but unfortunately I hate overcooked hamburger. The price was $70 for that and I feel it was completely overpriced. The only reason I gave a 3 star is because of the shakes.

Michael M.

Yelp
Got there 2 hours before a baseball game and immediately got a seat at the bar and ordered. The bartenders where great and taked about the local brews and gave samples. Unfortunately we had to wait 1:30 for the burgers to come out. I ordered mine pink inside. It came out like a hockey puck with no cheese. I would have complained but I had the order switched to, to go. Stay away. I would rather have stopped at McDonald's.
google avatar

Lori J.

Yelp
new fav burgatory location! i had only been to one other location at least a dozen times, but it was fun to try a new location. same great food, same great service. i'm a big fan of creating my own burger, and highly recommend you get creative with it!
google avatar

Chandler W.

Yelp
So, there are no pictures to describe this experience. And I'm very iffy about burgatory. But this was horrible. The waitress did great. But not one but two under cooked burgers. They "fixed" one burger by putting the same bitten burger back on the grill. But the. Milkshakes were fantastic
google avatar

Chris R.

Yelp
Went here for lunch on a Monday, so unsurprisingly they seemed a little understaffed. However, the food, atmosphere, and service were all great. If you are looking for a burger place, this is THE place. They have smash, bison, elk - pretty much any type of burger you'd want. Even better, if you are a truly choosy burger connoisseur, you can completely design your own burger. We ordered the triple b and the double smash burgers, both of which were great. For dessert we had a couple of milkshakes which did not disappoint. The ambiance was also on point, leaning heavily into the burgatory theme with witty and branded art throughout.

Brynn S.

Yelp
So, I'd like to say our waitress was amazing. Had a good mood around our table, delivered good food, and mind you, our table had 4 kids. There was a man with a spongebob outfit who was going around our table, our table only, hissing at kids, talking inappropriately around them, and staring at our table and dancing. When me and my kids were walking out, he had the audacity to yet say another inappropriate thing for the time of being. Unacceptable!!!
google avatar

Danielle V.

Yelp
Love this place! The vibe is so cool! We tried the cha cha chicken sandwich which is so unique and delicious! Love the French onion dip on there! Definitely recommend the fries over the chips! $2 for a side of fries instead of chips. Also any dipping sauces on the side are .75. They should really say that when you order. Next time I want to try the milkshakes!
google avatar

David N.

Yelp
This was the best burger I had all week during a recent trip to Pittsburgh. I had the prime burger with caramelized and fried onions and it was fantastic. A little pink left and quite juicy. The patty itself was a nice size and well seasoned. The onions were cooked perfectly. No complaints at all. I can't comment on the service as I had my food delivered, but I wish I'd found this place sooner in the week as I'd have gone back again and gotten a milkshake.

Ricky G.

Yelp
I was hesitant to try this place because I can rarely find a burger I enjoy outside my home. I'm very picky and almost 90% of the places I go over cook them. I got the fiddy fiddy burger called Piggy Butter & Jelly but they were out of bacon/pork so I settled for all beef. To my surprise it was one of if not the best burger I've had anywhere. I will be back to try it specifically with the ground bacon not all beef. Service was amazing and the atmosphere was fun. I will be back and as I come to many Pirates games this will be my go to joint. The burger was cooked perfect it was very flavorful, juicy, and yes moist (pun intended here) haha.

Aubriana W.

Yelp
The staff was incredibily kind, seated us and took care of us very quickly! We came in with a group of 6 and got our drinks with great speed, and food didn't take very long at all. Burgatory offers a customization menu for your burgers. It's lovely! You can pick anything from your cheeses, your meat, your bun, spices, etc. It is the introverts dream to just hand someone your order. My burger was fantastic, as was my milkshake! 12/10 would definitely go to Burgatory again whenever I find myself in the Pittsburgh area. It was a lovely family outing.

Yelp
We stopped here after a morning of city shenanigans. They had tons of stuff on the menu for all sorts of variety eaters; Chicken, veggie, salads, and beef. There were dairy and gluten free options. The shake list was abundant and the waitress was helpful in decision making and guiding me in what her favorites were. She was kind and tolerant of our silly banter. I got the caramel pretzel small shake and it was delicious. The whip cream was thick and drizzled with caramel. I then got a build your own "burger". I got ground chicken with Cajun rub, buffalo cheese, and French fries. To be honest the fries were disappointing. I was wondering why the waitress didn't offer fries with the meal but they were soggy, too salty, and overall inconsistent in texture/taste. The coslaw was ordered by the person so went with and it wasn't too watery, was firm, and a little spicy, and pretty flavorful. Definitely recommend this over the fries. The ambiance of the place was buzzing, chaotic and sports bar-ish. Loud with employees abundant and customers laughing or interacting. Overall I'd recommend this spot, while the meal didn't feel super healthy it was delicious.

Evan A.

Yelp
Burger, fries, salad, and milkshake were all delicious. The waitress was attentive and provided refills quickly. Will definitely be going back.

Claudia C.

Yelp
Fun burger names and the milk shakes are well worth the $ The downfall is the smoke from the attached cigar bar filtered in to the restaurant
google avatar

Rob M.

Yelp
After a four and half hour flight, my son and I looked for a place to eat near our hotel and this was our choice. Not many people were here on a Tuesday night. Our waitress was great and gave us some excellent recommendations. I got the Triple B burger with sides of slaw and cornbread. My son created his own burger. We also shared the Wicked Wings. Our burgers were cooked perfectly and tasted great. The wings were outstanding. The slaw was average and the cornbread is highly recommended (just like our waitress suggested)! They also have a good tap beer selection available. The only thing that I didn't like was that my burger had too much sauce on it so I couldn't pick it up and eat it like a "normal" burger (had to use a fork). It was also loaded with jalapenos, but I like them so for me that was fine. The bill for the two of us amounted to over $70, so it isn't cheap. Having the option to try a lot of different burger meats drew us here, and it didn't disappoint at all.
google avatar

Bethany L.

Yelp
I was staying nearby on a work trip and ended up here twice. The milkshakes? To die for. I tried the oreo peanut butter pie and the caramel pretzel - both spiked - and they were fantastic. The oreo peanut butter pie one was the best, though! Both of my burgers were just fine - granted, I did the customize your own option. But service was also fantastic both nights - I sat at the bar once and at a lil solo table the second night.

Chuck S.

Yelp
The crew managed a concert crowd expertly. Such a great job getting butts into seats in as little time as possible with no hiccups. Everyone had great attitudes and our waitress, Steph (Bugs) was outstanding! We watched her serve a packed patio with a smile and charm that put customers at ease. We had a great experience and delicious food and drinks! Thanks Burgatory!!

J L.

Yelp
We were at Burgatory at the North Shore last night for the first time. Our dinner was excellent!!! Steph, our server was the BEST!!! The nachos and the All Day Brunch burger were a 10 out of 10!!! We will be back!!! Thank you Steph for a great experience!!!
google avatar

Cole M.

Yelp
This place was as expected! Friendly service and a great spot to hit before games at Acrisure stadium as it's walking distance. The food was good but not great -- I appreciate that they had an allergen list with GF substitutes. The downsides were that the food took forever to come out and the drinks were overpriced for how small they were. Regardless we will probably be back for a pregame bite to eat!

sammi m.

Yelp
Food was great and stephanie our sever was amazing. She was attentive and funny she made our experience fabulous!!

P S.

Yelp
Absolutely, the Burgers, every thing on the menu shined. Waitstaff and bartenders shine, bus staff and especially valet staff were available for only $3. Great ambiance reasonable prices and wait times even at peak hours. Fastest service time if you arrange to arrive for dinner at 5 PM.

Todd H.

Yelp
Always a great place to go. Don't order anything but a burger, just go somewhere else then. Steph is/was so awesome and helpful. Perfect setting for eating outside as well.
google avatar

Lindsay S.

Yelp
First of all, service was great. Everyone was so nice, from the hostess that greeted us to the server that took our order. The burgers were good. Loved that we could customize our burger and the ease at which we could do it. Filling out the form was much easier than trying to tell a server all the changes you want to make to a standard item. They were out of Gorgonzola cheese, so we didn't get to try the cheese frieS BUT the burgers were so filling, that it worked out. If we had an appetizer, we wouldn't have been able to finish our burgers. I couldn't even eat any of the chips because I was so full from the burger. Great post Steelers game choice

Kerri S.

Yelp
Went here for a new hire lunch with colleagues. There were seven of us but our server Leilani was amazing. The food took a while to come out but everything was amazing once it came. I loved my bunless "meat your maker" burger. I want to eat it again !!! Pretty good experience
