McCall, Idaho, Travel Guide

"If you're looking to unplug in the wilderness, add Burgdorf Hot Springs to your itinerary. Keep cozy in a room outfitted with a woodstove (firewood included), or sweat it out in the summer as cabins lack electricity. Although it's rustic, Weber says staying at Burgdorf is something many of his fishing clients rave about." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Didn't stay in the cabins. Only came up for a few hours but the cabins look amazing. Two small pools that are pretty hot, feel like they are around 110-113 deg. Larger pool that is around 104 and then a fun little bath tub waterfall overflow that is really neat. The place feels like it is under new management or new motivation with a really positive vibe. Minimum stay in the cabins is two days AND no pets, we travel with our dogs so that's gonna be a pain but I'd still like to come up and stay. One of the neatest hot springs I've been to.

It was a delightful experience and we will be back to visit again soon! The only thing I want to caution others about is the slipperiness of the stone below near the bathtub. Both my son and my husband fell really hard. Fortunately no one was seriously injured but I think that is because the universe knows we cannot handle much more. The time we spent there was very much needed!

Google
Burgdorf has been my favorite hot springs since I was a kid, brought my own kids for the first time this weekend. Still love it more than anywhere else however the cost has gone up significantly since we last went which I understand but makes it hard to plan to come back very often. Family of 4 is a little over $70 for 2 hours. Although with it being summer 2 hours was plenty of soaking time. And you can't beat the location, it's a bit of a drive but it's beautiful and quiet❤️

Google
There are so many good things to say about this place! It is well kept, rustic in the best way, and just such a good place to escape, connect, and relax. The current caretakers are amazing stewards of this place-- it is clear how much they love this place.

Matt Harstad

Google
All around best hot springs that I’ve been to and I’ve been to some pretty spectacular hot springs. The overall vibe, the quality of the water (soaking AND drinking - The feel and taste of the water is unlike any other), the over 150 year commitment to preserving a close to natural state of the source and the pools, and the journey to get there, all combined , led me to write this review (I usually don’t participate in this manner). I don’t care if you only go once, but you must. Be respectful. Be observant. Be relaxed.

Scott Hughes

Google
Such a special place! Absolutely the best service in the world ,zero pressure and the caretaker was very helpful and friendly. The hot springs are clean and relaxing, we absolutely love the small group concept with no more than 20 folks in the pool during your 2 hour soak! Can’t wait to return, thanks for the experience!

Google
This place. Not only is it charming and secluded and quaint, but has the most incredible, clean hot springs. Even better was the warm welcome we received from the groundskeeper. My daughter quietly exchanged vows with her now husband while a small group of us witnessed while in the hot springs pool. It wasn’t fancy or reserved but simple and perfect. When the groundskeeper heard about it, he asked how many were in our party (12 in total)..a while later he showed up with homemade cupcakes and (small) fireworks to help us celebrate. Couldn’t have had a better experience.

Been to Burgdorf a few times before COVID. This was our first time coming back since the reservation stuff started. While the hot springs themselves and the changing rooms haven't changed, the cost, time slots and lack of towel rentals is no longer worth riding that whooped out trail in and out. And knowing their no alcohol policy it was really shocking to show up to our time slot 15 minutes late with the previous party still in the pools with coolers and piles of empty beer cans around the pool. It's also fun to watch the people go sit in the pee bath.

Yelp
As a city girl that comes from all the creature comforts, coming to Burgdorf Hot Springs felt like walking into a country bumpkin movie set. This place was nestled among trees, cabins, barns and a whole lotta nothing. Don't expect bathrooms or running water here. Just a pool with a gravel bottom with wooden railings + wooden steps to walk in. Reservations are made online here and offer them in 2 hour time blocks at $20 per person. Once we got inside to the check in desk, there was no one to be found. Perhaps this place is based on the honor system? If that's the case then this must be an Idaho thing. During our entire time here, I don't believe we saw a single employee. Just people like us in the pools. There was a small dressing room with dim lighting for you to change in. If you're looking for a spot to put your things, feel free to plant them on the benches surrounding the pool. Bare bones here is how I would describe it. Minus all the luxury amenities, here's what you do get: A true rustic country experience soaking in mineral water that does make your body feel absolutely amazing. The larger pool is between 100-113°F depending on where you are located. This is where I stayed because I couldn't handle any hotter than this. If you go up to the top 2 enclosed pools, those are at a steady 113°F . Nope, not for me. I wasn't about getting cooked. There is a cute little tub located a few feet away from the large pool that is fed by a pipe. This is the least hot of all the pools and just a fun thing to do for pics. We fit 2 of us in there and we were just fine. 3 would be pushing it. Would I come back? Yes if I'm ever out in the middle of Idaho.

Yelp
Had a lovely afternoon at Burgdorf Hot Springs! We took a beautiful ride through the snow to get there and enjoyed a relaxing time with gorgeous views! The main pool was very comfortable temperature and a few of us managed to spend some time in the hotter one as well. The only drawback was the changing room which was very crowded and clothing could easily get mixed up.

Kathy P.

Yelp
We followed the online instructions and made a reservation. We also filled out our waivers. You can't just drop in and there's no Internet available so do it before you get there. Everything was clean but primitive. No showers or private dressing rooms and the bathroom facilities are a pit toilet. If you can get past all that it's a good place to soak. $20/person for 2 hours is a little pricey but the water was a great temperature, the October weather was gorgeous and we met some nice people.

Yelp
Don't support the businesses that hate what made Idaho a wonderful state. This place used to be awesome! Very cool cabins with wood stoves starting at $50 with 24hr access to the hot pools. Price has now tripled and they added a covid vaccine proof requirement. I stayed here during a 2 week motorcycle trip and it was the most relaxing part of my trip. Apparently their progressive new prices and policies reflect their political views that don't fit Idaho. Sad to see but this place is a big fat "nope" for me now. There are lots of hot springs and cabins to stay in where the owners maintain Idaho values. Avoid this one since their latest family members in charge belong in California.

Yelp
8 of us visited the spring this weekend and had a blast. Staff was nice, pool was clean and there is even a little creek where the littlest kids (1.5 years) were able to play and stay warm.

April S.

Yelp
This place has gone way downhill since 2018 when I got engaged here for close to $80 a night and could soak anytime. New caretakers are covid scared, required proof of vaccine, raised the prices to $175 a night with a 2 night minimum then you had to sign up for 2hr soaking time after paying $350. Ridiculous. They are really rude and you can tell by their replies to reviews on Google and people's individual experiences on yelp. They blocked me from their Facebook page for voicing my opinion. My father n law grew up in McCall and fought fires to save this place. Horrible new caretakers with very one sided views. They said "we don't want you're kind here anyway to me". So take it for what you will. I'm sad I loved this place.

John F.

Yelp
Just laughed at their prices. Management needs to go back to California. Another great place ruined, too bad.

Yelp
Burgdorf is such an amazing hot springs! The property has cabins and buildings that have a vast history that precedes us all. I love the authenticity of how original everything is and it makes this place so special to get to partake in its history. The cabins are quaint and rustic, and they have the largest and most clean hot spring I have ever visited. This is a wonderful place to go and get unplugged and disconnect from the regular hub bub of life and return to the basics. You'll come back to your normal life more appreciative of the basic things most people take for granted. The new management takes our current times seriously, which is admirable and necessary. I can tell they are working extremely hard to improve the cabins and experience. Can't wait to visit again!!

John J.

Yelp
would give them zero if I had a chance. Been going here for 20 years and whoever the next generation of the family business or if they are new owners are completely missing the point. They were mean they're not accommodating, pricing has gone ridiculous high, customer service is terrible, a man berated and intimidated my wife about a dog being in the car in the parking lot. Zero improvement in services/infrastructure. They have free hot water from the earth. that's it. This place is changed significantly to the negative over the last few years and I will never go there again. Shame on the new generation or new owners for destroying a mccall area landmark.

Alex L.

Yelp
I stumbled upon this place In September 2020. Walked onto the property because there were no signs thinking it was a ghost town of sorts. The caretaker came out and was angry at me for being there. I told him I was sorry and I didn't see any signs and I would promptly leave but, he insisted on calling me a liar and said I would get arrested. At this point I was very stressed out because I didn't want to get arrested. If I saw a no trespassing sign I would've turned around. He took a photo of me and marched over to my car to get my plate information and to his dismay, didn't see any "no trespassing" signs either. He then switched from an incriminating tone to a sorry one. He was completely inauthentic and wasn't sorry for the way he treated me but, just didn't want me to tell anyone about the interaction. He was extremely unprofessional, probably a narcissistic jerk who doesn't care about anyone but himself, and an out of stater (Oregon) who doesn't belong in Idaho. Lastly, if the other reviews are correct about requiring vaccinations, that's despicable and sad. Steer clear of this place at all costs.

Yelp
My friend said it best when she asked out loud, "the owners live locally? Have they no pride?". Reconsider staying overnight in the cabins if any of these apply to your desires: safety: stairs and balconies are unstable, second floors have holes around smokestack that toddlers will fall through, smokestacks are not airtight, your log will not last through a few hours (pine) and you'll have asthma by morning. Solar lights in the outhouse right? HAAAAAAA, no. cleanliness: rustic is used a lot in the other reviews, this is misleading, as it seems to suggest quaint and sentimental. However, there is no power, thus no vacuuming (you'll see the broom provided is an ancient joke), there is no running water, thus no such thing as wiping down a surface EVER, and no possible way to "clean" the outhouses. comfort: the bed frame and mattress were uneven, laughably uneven. Even with our own bedding, the nights were unbearable. No screens, just water stained curtains. The floppy armchair cushion was sunken (ask a friend for a hand up). Do not lean against or brush up against the surfaces unless you bring tweezers to pull out the wooden slivers. If you are simply going to spend less than a day to enjoy the hot springs only, realize that the varying water temperatures that other reviewers mention are all hot. There is no chill down pool, chill flow or cold water showerhead options. The bathtub at the end of the pool flow is as "cool" of water you will experience. The hot spring itself is magic. If you enjoy photographing historic places, you're going to love the property. The "lodge", check-in building has a small number of snacks to buy and locally made body care, t-shirts, and other mercantile. There were two dogs living onsite. One of them was friendly and curious, the other one growled at small children. They were free to roam and come by the cabins snooping for snacks. Due to the relevance of other incredible hot springs that might be on your bucket list, this place is pretty low on my priority to recommend. If you live locally, sure, why not. If you're thinking of flying/driving into Idaho, just for this place, hopefully, you have lots of other recreational interests.

Shane P.

Yelp
I as a fellow small business owner would like to commend the owners of Burgdorf for their stance on mandatory vaccination. Not only is this responsible business practice it is responsible community practice. Way to go guys, protect your staff and people who are trying to do the right thing! Shane

Cathy C.

Yelp
I was looking forward to trying this Hot Springs. But after reading many reviews about their mandatory jab I will not visit. Businesses do not realize when they make these type of mandatory rules they are only allowing a certain type of customer. Many people cannot have the jab for reasons other than their personal preference. Doesn't the United States have HIPAA laws against other people knowing my health? My help is between me and my doctor, certainly not the owner of a resort!! Shame on you!

Yelp
Such an epic 2 days here. The people that take care of the place are awesome and everyone who was visiting was great. Such a great experience. It is very rustic, but well maintained and exactly what we all needed to disconnect from the world for a couple of days.

Yelp
We've been here several times over the years. Good place to relax in warm water outdoors. There's a fun old bath tub under a facet for photo ops. Hot tub is under a roofed area. One section is shallower for kids. They have swim noodles, floaters, chairs, lawn tarps, benches, etc. for everyone to use. Watch out for horse flies!

Yelp
At first I thought it was a sad thing that all my pictures of Burgdorf are prints that need scanning, and I can't yet share them to the yelp page. Then I remembered that pictures don't do this place, or any place on Payette Lake in McCall, Idaho, justice. At all. I've been coming here since I was a toddler, the most recent visit back in the mid 2000s. From what I've read and heard from relatives in the Boise area, the folks that own this sanctuary have kept it up well after many decades. I can't wait to go back and find out for myself. The best thing about Burgdorf besides the panoramic forest view, accessible by car in summer and snowmobile in winter, is the gigantic geothermic warm pool in the center of the complex. It's the biggest I've seen at any of the Hot Springs that I've been to, with beautiful, clear water with an emerald sapphire sheen, and a earthy bottom made of very small, smooth rocks that don't harm your feet. Also available is a very hot pool and a claw foot tub, all with a view beyond compare. There are also funky cabins you can stay in where you can pretend you stepped through a time portal, as they are bare, offering no plumbing or electricity. 30 or so miles out from McCall, Burgdorf is worth the drive, which will take you around Payette Lake and is not to be missed.

Yelp
I have been coming here for literally my entire life and it has not changed one bit. This is hands down THEEEE BEST hot spring in Idaho. It is a natural hot spring fed into two incredibly hot, hot, hot, hot tubs (I dare you to even get in, and if you can, to stay in 5 minutes - the trick is not to move a single muscle). The HOT tubs feed into the main pool which is huge (about normal swimming pool sized) and has rustic wood sides with a natural rock bottom (great exfoliation!) and is quite warm, gradually getting cooler toward the opposite end of the pool where it drains out to a rustic claw foot bathtub overlooking a meadow. The meadow is a wildlife refuge so you can sometimes watch herds of elk (mostly in the early spring). Everything here is rustic and are mostly the original buildings on the property. There is a changing room (wide open, no lockers, so hopefully you are comfortable with nudity), and an outhouse behind it. The office area serves a limited menu (frozen pizza, burgers, snacks, etc) and offers a comfortable seating area with a lot of history and information about the area. They have cabins to rent which are mostly the original cabins on the site and are adorable. I have not personally rented one (I own property nearby) but friends and family have and all seemed to have a good experience. There is no power or running water - but they provide firewood. I believe the cabins are all mostly furnished and have lanterns but I am not positive. Your cabin rental price is based per person but includes 24-hour pool access. "Day soaks" are under the $10 mark per person and I believe the soak hours are 10a - 8p. Big pros: -They allow you to bring your own food and drinks (including alcohol) just no glass containers -Firepit and seating at the poolside -Sometimes they have live music -Value for the price is outstanding -LOCATION! The address and many people lead you to believe this is IN McCall but it is actually about a 45-60 minute drive north up Warren Wagon rd, in the Payette National Forest. It is well worth the trip up there. Winter months it is only accessible by snowmobile. It has been under new ownership and management for a few years now and I think they are doing a wonderful job. The owners are local to McCall and visit frequently. The caretakers are a nice couple who seem to have a lot of experience in the backcountry and are doing a great job doing improvements while maintaining the original charm of this historic location.

Yelp
Awesome clean and rustic hot spring. Many variable temperatures of water available. Loved this place!

M J.

Yelp
We were looking forward to using this hot springs as we were camping nearby. But their mandatory "jab" policy is a deal breaker. I have to state that this is the first business to turn away business from the "Unvaccinated". From their email "allowance of roaming free with disregard to the safety of others in the state of Idaho". Wow! Be aware!

Yelp
This place is special. I stayed overnight in one of the cabins, and had the best time. The cabins are rustic but comfortable. Take bedding, and everything you need to prepare food. The hot springs are fantastic! My new favorite in Idaho. There are a couple small hot tubs (110°), but the main pool is a perfect 100°, and we floated for hours. Overnight guests have 24-hour access to the springs, and it's absolutely worth staying out well past dark to enjoy the night sky. We saw shooting stars, and had the place to ourselves for a couple hours. Everything, including the service, is fantastic! I cannot wait to go again.

Hunting. H.

Yelp
What once was an idaho back country icon has slipped away to the grasp of the less cordial. You now have to rent a room to swim. Show them your papers of proof I can't tell you how many hundreds of dollars I've spent here swimming and enjoying what use to be an amazing place, but I can tell you how much I will spend in the future. And that is zero. Stay Idaho Burgdorf. Your attempt at refinement of policies will affect your prosperity. Your not what you once were but you can make it better.

Edward T.

Yelp
The site and springs are super cool, but the owner struck us as very strange. There are several laminated sheets of rules we were told to abide by. She seemed like a spaced out lady from the part of California that everyone is moving away from. We had to sign a 13 paragraph release of liability that was, to put it lightly, very "comprehensive". There are rules posted everywhere, which we promptly broke. Never expected to run into a weird commune type hippie lady in BFE Idaho.

Yelp
BEAUTIFUL and a perfect place to recharge! The Burgdorf is about 30 miles north of McCall. The speed limit is 25-55 for the most of the times driving up there from McCall. The scenery is absolutely beaufitul and serene. There are many opportunities to take photos if you are carrying a camera. Once you get there, there is no cell service!! The lodge is very rustic. It reminded me of a place out of an old western movie. There is an old piano in the corner that still sounds wonderful! The pool is very clean and well maintained. You can rent cabins, but no electricity or running water. Think of it as camping inside a cabin - the cabins have basic furnishings, but you need to bring your own bedding, cooking and lighting needs. I have NOT stayed at the cabins here, but I will make it a point to do it this year and will update the review soon!

Yelp
I probably would never have found this place on my own, but luckily my friend grew up going to the Burgdorf Hot Springs. The surrounding area, the entire grounds and the pools themselves are ALL very lovely. I wish that we had more time to spend there, but alas- we made the most out of the two hours we did have. It was definitely worth the $10 per adult. There are two small pools in a covered area that were 110 degrees that day, the large pool was a comfortable 100 degrees. At the foot of the large pool, there is a claw foot tub that has water cascading down into it before it joins a little stream. It is such a great photo opp! All three of us fit in, but barely... it made for very fun photos. Another interesting note, there was one small bat sleeping in a knothole in the wall of the small pool structure, so be cautious not to knock into him in case he is a permanent resident there! There are also happy chickens wandering around the grounds. If you want to drink, bring cans not glass! There are also options to stay in cabins or camp on the grounds, which looked awesome- if we had more time we definitely would have stayed overnight!

Yelp
Burgdorf Hot Spring is one of the most special places I've ever been. The surrounding land is untouched, surreal and full of wonder. The hot spring itself is large and deep with little pebbles and crystals at the bottom of the pool. While you soak you'll feel your spirits rise and soul rejuvenate. The wood-burning stove cabins are incredibly cozy and each one has it's own unique character and history. After staying for a week in the winter, I never wanted to leave. Not only is Burgdorf special, the new managers (Emily and Jordan) are some of the very best humans you could ever encounter. Since they took on this new role, they have been pouring their hearts into elevating this space. Every idea, renovation, update, and policy is made with thoughtfulness to ensure the sacredness of Burgdorf and it's guests are put first. They are doing amazing work out there and I can't wait to see the future of Burgdorf Hot Spring with those two spitfires in the driver's seat.

Yelp
We just went here yesterday by snow machines that we rented from Cheap Thrills. This is a great destination for a couple hour snow machines ride. When we arrived there was plenty of parking and easy access in and out. Lots of cabins and old log buildings. Everyone who works there couldn't be any nicer. There are plenty of snacks and food items to purchase. We headed out to changing room and put our bathing suits on. Right behind the changing room is the only outhouse on site. It's very primitive. I would suggest taking some shower shoes or flip flops to avoid walking in the snow. The hot springs pool was very large and relaxing. The bottom of the pool is gravel and easy to walk on. There are two smaller tubs that are much hotter. My family and I had a great time. They have clean, soft towels for rent and can even rent you a bathing suit if you'd like. We were able to quickly dry off in the warm changing room and get our snow gear back on and head out. Great experience and a great time.

Ann R.

Yelp
Used to love this place, but this last time there were goats in the pool area. Non neutered males that stunk and climbing on everything and the snowmobile. I love animals, but I don't want them rubbing on me and chewing on our stuff

Ja S.

Yelp
Drove an hour from Mccall with three kids to find out if was closed for cleaning even though it wasn't posted on the website... then the lady acted frustrated when I asked to use the restroom for my kids!!! To top it all off the owners grandkids were swimming so my kids couldnt understand why they couldn't! Never returning !! I recommend going to Gold Fork out by Donnelly!

Yelp
As a child I loved this place, and I can't believe that it hasn't been reviewed already. This is a rustic hot springs experience, with a small hot pool reaching above 110 degrees, a large warm swimming pool, and a claw-foot tub overlooking a beautiful meadow (if it's still there, it has been years). You can rent cabins for a reasonable rate, and I can't wait to go back.

Yelp
I`ve experienced better. I and a friend stayed in a cabin this last Saturday June 1st.I booked the cabin 3 months ago and when i got to burgdorf I assumed the cabin would be what they said it would be and paid for the cabin and it was supposed to have 2 double beds in it and it did not` two of the girls that worked there were trying to give us another cabin that the employees use and there were some people in the next cabin were willing to trade and go to the employee cabin and they changed there mind .Also when I booked the cabin 3 months prior I paid a deposit of $40.00 which was half down. Well there were 2 boys that worked there and one of them was really rude and I asked for $20.00 of my $80.00 back and the boys said the owner would not give me a refund. So with that being said I asked for a twin cot to put my sleeping bag on and the rude young man had no idea of what I was talking about. So the rude young man said I can get you a mattress to sleep on the floor and I said that is unacceptable and I also said you mean and old lady my age you are going to make sleep on the floor and the rude young man said yes and I said I want 2 or 3 mattresses and the owner brought 2 mattresses and I said no I want a third mattress if I have to sleep on the floor. Also they said well we could give you 2 separate cabins and you can stay in one cabin and your friend stay in another cabin and We both said no we came up together to spend the night in one cabin and have fun not to be separated and one be in one cabin and one in the other cabin/It is nice for the hot springs but i have told several people not to stay there because of what happened to me and a friend and i have also reported them to the better business bureau .Do`nt stay there.

Yelp
I would strongly recommend locating another facility at which to enjoy a quiet day or two at Idaho's hot springs. We both emailed and called the management of Burgdorf Hot Springs to confirm we could bring the trailer and use it for cooking. We were told it was fine since we had also rented a cabin paying for each of us. As there are no electrical hookups, there is no way for us to cook in our trailer without the use of a small generator to run the lights, fan, and pump. We kept the generator in the back of our truck with the cover closed except for a small section, muffled it with cardboard, and used it for less than 45 minutes from 10:20 until we finished cooking breakfast and heating the water for washing up. I checked with a couple of guests on the way out who said they never even heard it running. I could barely hear it sitting outside our trailer myself. However, that morning while we were cooking breakfast the caretakers came over and told us we would have to leave because they don't allow trailers. I hadn't brought any other camp cooking equipment because by email and phone we'd been told it was fine. Also, my father chose to sleep in a sleeping bag in the trailer for safety. When we parked at midnight, we couldn't see what access there was to the trailer. Because of this and because it appeared that the only access to the cabin was three steep fairly rickety steps that my elderly father could not manage, he decided that sleeping in the trailer was safest. We attempted to explain all of this to the management and we had not only emailed but called to discuss this. However, their only solution was for us to leave. I can honestly say I later reached out to several friends who lived in the area and they have all told me that I had made a poor choice in this facility to go to and several recommended Thousand Springs just down the road. My biggest concern through all of this was the simple fact that in asking us to leave they took away the opportunity for my children to participate in swimming under the stars in the hot springs which was our purpose for making a reservation in the first place. I can assure you we simply won't go back nor will we ever recommend this location to anyone as there are several other Hot Springs in rustic and rural areas throughout this area of Idaho for people to enjoy without the heartache being asked to leave even when the customer has asked for clarification and permission prior to taking any action.

Yelp
Really neat place about 45 minutes outside of McCall - also the start and finish line of the IMTUF 100 mile race. A great place for a hot springs soak in a pool - or try their little bathtub in the middle of the spring. Rustic cabins for you to stay in and a great spirit.

S S.

Yelp
What a great destination. Rented a two-seater snowmobile from Cheap Thrills in McCall and easily found Burgdorf. Swimming while it snowed was quite the experience. The hot springs are unbelievable. They have a fantastic changing room with heated floors and a fireplace. 5 stars isn't enough to rate this place.
