What a freaking gem and a true definition of a hole in the wall, BUT, it is also filled with the Vietnam War (or in Vietnam, they call it the American War) remnants of the past for a woman who lived through it as a kid who followed the American soldiers around - loitered if you will, because she was a poor kid and so they taught her English and she was able to help both sides of the people in war - the American soldiers in translating for the village people of Vietnam. Though she didn't agree with the American government, she however saw it deep from the inside of both sides.
They took her on, and she helped many Vietnamese village people as the Americans gave food and aid to the poorest parts of Đà Nẵng up in the mountainous areas.
She realized that lots of soldiers were also kids, when one day in a flash flood, while everyone was holding on to any tree they could to not wash away, an American soldier was crying out for his mom. She soon came to realize, he was only 19 and drafted for war. She felt deep sympathy and compassion for both sides and helped with what she could.
Her stint landed her in Vietnamese prison for 2 years. Asked her how she got out, this feisty 60 years young lady said, I escaped of course and had to resume a completely new identity. (Her brother however wasn't so lucky he was in there for 15 years - only got out in 1990.)
She is a woman of strength, pizazz so wise beyond her years as a street smart kid doing whatever she could to survive! Not only is she a survivor, she thrived in whatever she touched!
We came looking for a burger, and it was the biggest portion sized burger I've seen anywhere in Asia, I mean, even in the US! The burger was double stacked phatty patties with lettuce and tomatoes and a great crispy order of thick fries - everything hit the spot!
For 100,000vnd, and the massive and delicious burger it was beyond my expectations! We also ordered a Vietnamese iced coffee and Mango Milkshake.
The history at this place - oh yeah she rents out motorbikes and surfboards too!
Seriously, I didn't know what to expect. There was only 1 burger option, ok 2. One with beef, the other Vegetarian burger. The rest of the menu was local foods - Vietnamese noodles, or I like to call them Noods.
Come try this place - its a simple place - 2-3 tables inside and 3-4 tables outside. The photos of history and relics were just spectacular! Listening to her story was even more extraordinary!
Co Tam is such an amazing, hard working, feisty, intelligent firecracker that exudes warmth and charisma! Oh I didn't even mention the amount of charity she's given out over the years because she understands what poverty was like and she helps so many mountainous villagers for both food and supplies!
Please stop by, eat some wonderful food, but seriously stay for the history lesson! I promise you won't be disappointed!
Highly recommend this place!
