These 7 Properties Will Make You Feel Like You're at the Grand Budapest Hotel

"This South Devon coastal hotel in the UK features a restored 1930s art deco design. Its stained glass dome ceiling and live 1930s music in the Ballroom provide a whimsical and glamorous retreat reminiscent of The Grand Budapest."

We recently stayed at Burgh Island and wanted to share our thanks for such a memorable experience. The hotel truly lives up to its iconic reputation — beautifully restored, unique and full of character — yet never once did it feel pretentious. From the moment we arrived, we felt comfortable, relaxed and genuinely welcomed. The staff were consistently lovely and the atmosphere they created was something quite special. The food was absolutely delicious, which is no small achievement given the size of the party during our stay. Thank you for a truly unforgettable experience.

We have been trying to visit Burgh Island for over 5 years, but we finally made it, and it completely lived up to our expectations. An absolutely beautiful place, so well kept. Truly an Art Deco masterpiece. The level of customer service from all the staff was truly outstanding. From the guys driving the tractor, to the reception staff and the bar and restaurant staff everyone was so friendly and helpful.. We were made to feel special throughout our stay. We'd had to reschedule our visit due to an unexpected family issue and the deputy manager was so helpful and accommodating. She even upgraded us to a suite for no extra charge which was mind blowing. We were in the Mermaid Suite, and it felt really special. Like going back in time. The Palm Court was my favourite area though. An absolutely beautiful space for relaxing and socialising. This was supposed to be a once in a lifetime trip, but we enjoyed it so much we're already thinking of returning in summertime so we can enjoy the outside facilities to the full. It seems very expensive when you just look at the prices, but for the location, the decor, the service and the food, it really is worth it. Thank you Burgh Island.

We had a lovely two nights stay in this period hotel. The room had comfortable king size bed and period furniture and the bathroom had a large bath tub with lashings of hot water and underfloor heating. ||The room Gertrude Lawrence had a balcony & gorgeous view. We had a marvellous time dressing up for the evening meal which included canapés in the lobby and a band playing during the meal with the opportunity to dance. The breakfast was delicious. ||The hotel is set on an island which is small enough to explore in 30mins or you can cross on foot the causeway or if the tide is in on the sea tractor (great fun) to explore the coastal path . ||We went in November when it was cold so. I recommend jumpers or fleeces for inside the hotel room and some public areas.

This is the most fabulous place. Particularly if you like the 1920's and are prepared to dress the part. The rooms are beautiful. This is not " just a hotel". It is an experience that is really not like any other. You are on your own island and so if the weather is good it is so amazing. Make an effort to swim in the emerald pool. It can be a bit chilly but it has to be done. Food and staff are brilliant.

Beautiful Deco hotel famous for Agatha Christie connection and features in the books/TV shows. Exceptional waiter and the lady who greeted us was fantastic. There's a lovely cocktail bar and lounge and the dining room had views across the coast. Being picky, it would be great if there was a bit more variety in the lunch menu and some things we ordered could have been elevated in keeping with the surroundings. Overall a very good experience

The Chanson & Champagne event celebrating 100 yrs of the hotel in November 2025 was amazing! My connection with the hotel was that my father helped to construct the replica stern of the HMS Ganges ship in 1930 that can be seen on the end of the building today. Excellent service from all staff.

We were bitten by the Burgh island bug many years ago and have been regular Christmas guests and have been to many events over the last 20 years. If you enjoy art Deco surroundings , black tie dinners and a superb location, this is the place for you. Unlike many top hotels around the country where the dress code has all but disappeared. Burgh island positively encourages the dress to impress vibe. There can be few Hotels (if any) with such a unique location and interesting history. The only pre warning that I would give is that it can become addictive!

Sue and I have just returned from Burgh Island after celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary, after 9 nine years together Sue decided to propose to me with a dead rose! (long story). Anyway we have had the most wonderful escape on the island. We were lucky enough to have three nights of luxury, and to be honest we could not fault anything, the staff were all so polite, helpful and fun they could not do enough for us. The food was really good, certainly quality over quantity, I’m not saying the portion sizes were small they were not. As for the decor everything was in the style of the 20’s and thirties, think art-deco everything and you will get the idea. Was this a cheap break no, was it worth every penny, yes. Will we be going back…..you bet If you love the style of the 1920’s and 30’s you will love this hotel and it’s setting. We highly recommend Burgh Island.

Yelp
Wonderful place, evocative of another more elegant era. All the main rooms are Art Deco. Quite pricey, but wonderful for a special occasion, all the rooms are like being on an Ocean Liner. Links with Agatha Christie. Can only be accessed by tractor at High Tide, quite an adventure
