Buried Village of Te Wairoa

I wouldn't put it on the "must do" list. The information inside the museum is good and thorough however outside is run down and lacking maintenance. Not worth the $25/30 per person. We arrived just before closing so didn't go into the coffee shop. The walk down to the waterfall was really good. Be careful as it is very steep but a well maintained path with hand rails. Give yourself around an hour to explore it all and to do the waterfall walk.

Amazing attraction! Unassuming on entry, but had so much to offer, Interesting history, beautiful scenery and an epic waterfall!

I was disappointed by how colonial this space was and really only spoke about the settlers. I was hoping for more authentic Maori representation. I was also put off by how the only physical descriptions were of the two female guides and essentially said how hot they were. It seemed out of touch with the modern lens. I did however love the waterfall. Don't be discouraged by looking at all of the stairs down to the base the way back up is much easier.

Family visit with a senior. Great morning had, nice shady walk under the trees and foliage. Steeps steps to waterfall well worth the effort, easier coming back up. Lovely coffee shop at the end of the walk to get a nice cake and tea.

A must do! As you begin your journey in the museum. An overwhelming sense of Sadness as you read through all the stories of the tragedies that happened on that fateful night. Our children as part of the package we're able to complete a treasure hunt and if you get all of the clues you want treasure at the end of your visit. This activity was fantastic for our children to keep them on track and to keep them interested in the whakapapa of the Te Wairoa. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Buried Village and we thank the mana whenua for this opportunity.

My 15 yr old neice and I had a great time exploring, walking to the waterfall and learning the history. Amazing food at the café! Friendly staff. We booked online for a discount. Affordable.

Very interesting and educational. I loved reading all about the times leading up to the volcano eruptions. Learnt a lot that I didn't know prior to going. I went with 2 young children, but due to the treasure hunt they were immersed in the experience. The waterfall was the absolute highlight. Highly recommend. Loved traveling back in time, if for a moment.
