Best Hilton Head Island Hikes for Every Time of Year

"Winding along the Atlantic Ocean, the Burkes Beach trail provides a sandy, resistance-training walk that snakes slightly inland on a path to Chaplin Community Park, and at high tide you can watch Atlantic water flow into a salt marsh to form a makeshift creek to walk along." - Maya Kachroo-Levine Maya Kachroo-Levine Maya Kachroo-Levine is the digital senior editor at Travel + Leisure. I came here with my Dog, Elvis, burkes beach is a dog friendly beach, dogs are permitted on the beach before 10am and after 5pm - I’m not sure about the afternoon times, but you can find them on the beach website for confirmation. I came here for the sunrise and was not disappointed. The ease of free parking and closeness to the beach is so great, the parking lot is covered with trees giving lots of shade throughout. The beach is clean and taken care of, and of course my dog loved running around all morning

What a great dog friendly beach! We wanted to find a place to take our dogs to see the ocean, and we always search for dog friendly beaches, and this was a great one! Easy to park, easy to walk down to, a lot of room to walk up and down the beach! We always keep our dogs on leash, and they did amazing here! It was a beautiful day! We got so lucky! There is a bathroom near the parking, and the way down to the beach I think you could even put a wheelchair on the path they have! It was a very nice area!

We went to Coligny Beach Park, but it was too crowded, so we decided to come to this beach instead. However, it was busier than we expected as well. People were sunbathing, reading, napping, and fishing, while kids played in the sand or swam. Despite the crowd, it was a peaceful scene, and we had a great time. The beach is also dog-friendly and doesn's charge for parking.

Went to this beach for an end of day visit. When we found that parking charges ($3/hr. weekday, $5/hr. weekend), ended at 5 pm, we took several minutes to view the surrounding, beautiful park area and came back at 5 pm. Restrooms in the parking area were fairly new but lacked enough stalls. Showers on the street-end of the pathway to the beach were somewhat inadequate but better than leaving 'salty'. The beach itself was beautiful, clean, and relatively open (5 pm on Sunday), so we had no problem finding a wide open spot south of the path. (A private beach, beyond a stream cut, marks that end of the public beach.)

Dogs allowed on the beach before 10am, and after 5pm. Free parking in their public parking after 5pm. Hannibal's favorite thing is the beach ⛱️

Parking is just before the beach. Also there is a bathroom, bike repair and inflate. They had one vending machine for drinks. The beach was very open. Lots of area for walkers, bikers, those walking dogs, and kids playing football. A few people were sunning, but most were walking! I really enjoyed walking in the waves, it is cooler so not many people down that far into the tide. I would visit again.

Burkes Beach is my little piece of peace — always clean, calm, and welcoming. I love strolling down the long, sandy walkway with the ocean breeze all around me, and parking’s just a short walk away. The neighborhood nearby feels like something out of a dream, cozy and beautiful. My family and I have been coming here for years, and it’s never once let us down. The views are simply breathtaking, especially when the sun melts into the water at sunset. Every time I’m here, I can let my worries drift away with the waves. Whether I’m swimming in the refreshing water, walking along the shore, or just sitting quietly with a good book, this beach always feels like home. It’s my forever go-to place.
