These Under-the-radar Waterfalls Might Be America’s Best Kept Summer Secret

The experience was amazing. I went on the memorial day weekend and it was super packed I the first half of the day so I went to Lassen volcanic park n went to Burney in the evening when half of the crowd was gone. Always avoid holiday weekends and even if u go on a holiday weekend, go after 4 o clock. There is sunlight till 7-8 o'clock. The path to the falls is stroller friendly but you will encounter a couple of steps thrice on the way down to the falls. At the bottom there is a small area where u can park the stroller n go to the falls. Loved the experience. Don't take camping chairs, there is no place to use them at the bottom of the falls. We carried it to the bottom but could not use it. If you are planning to stay for sometime at the falls take water n snacks with you. There is a restaurant near the parking lot inside the park, you can buy it from there or bring it from home. Toilets were very clean.

Amazing gift from mother nature. Gorgeous clean waterfalls with very clean water and around the year flow smdue to underground stream. Enjoy breathtaking view from up and close of the fall. Enjoy a short and easy hike around the Falls trail.

Beautiful waterfall! The walk down to the falls took about 20 minutes. It was a nice paved walkway. There parking lot was pretty full. There’s a general store that sells soft serve. It was a treat since the temperatures were high. If you’re in the area, don’t miss out on seeing this waterfall.

This spot has been on my list for a long time, so I was really excited to hear the falls had reopened, especially since I had already booked a camping trip to Lassen Volcanic National Park. We took a day out of our itinerary to visit Burney Falls, and it was absolutely worth the scenic drive from Lassen. We arrived in the afternoon and had about five cars ahead of us at the entrance. It costs $10 per vehicle to enter. The walk to the falls is short, about 0.3 miles downhill with handrails along the way. If you want to get down to the pool at the base of the falls, you'll need to walk across some rocks, so I definitely recommend wearing good water shoes with grip. The rocks can be pretty slippery. I was in awe the entire walk down. Standing at the base of the falls and looking up was unreal. The mist, the sound, the power of the water...it was mesmerizing. I ended up sitting there for a couple of hours, just taking it all in. California really does have everything, but this has to be one of its most beautiful waterfalls. The area is incredibly well maintained, and I'm grateful for the park staff and all the work they put in during the closure. The walk back up the hill is definitely steep, but with a few breaks, it's totally manageable. There's a small park store near the entrance where you can buy souvenirs, ice cream, snacks, and drinks. The bathrooms were impressively clean. I'm so thankful I got to experience this place and hope I can return someday. It's an accessible and unforgettable spot that I truly believe everyone should experience at least once.

One of the most beautiful falls I’ve ever witnessed. Surreal experience and what a wonderful creation of nature. The falls were majestic and the water was crystal clear creating a mesmerizing experience. Must visit.

Incredible falls and well tended trails. Trail down to falls has some fairly steep sections. Nice camp grounds. There's a small store that stocks basic groceries, camping gear and has a soft serve machine. Well tended and clean restrooms are near store. Burney Creek trail temporarily closed early July 2025

I’ve seen a few waterfalls in my days, these might be my favorite of all time! The ten dollar parks fee is worth every cent! Parking was plentiful around the area. Plenty of clean bathrooms around. The trail down is paved and maintained well. It’s an easy hike down, a bit more tougher going up. But every bit worth it. At the bottom you can get better looks over the rocks! Absolutely beautiful.

The waterfalls are very magical, and it happened to be a little bit warmer the morning we went, and it seemed like as we descended down to the pool where the Bernie Falls xascades into, the temperature must have dropped 10 to 15°.

Yelp
After a long day beginning at the crack of dawn to hike and summit Lassen Peak, my wonderful husband decided to surprise me on our way to Oregon with a stop here at these magnificent falls. We were there in mid September at around 5-6pm. The park was pretty empty which made it easy and nice to walk down the short trail and loop to see the falls. This was a soul filling experience for me. I was so awed by the sound of the falls and the views. There is a small fee of $10 to park your vehicle and the park is open from 8:00am to sunset. No dogs are allowed on the trail down to the falls, but are allowed at the overlook. The falls are named after a settler by the name of Samuel Burney who lived in the area during the 1850's. Thankfully between him and the McArthur family they were able to save the falls and the land from development. They ended up gifting the property to the State of California. A 129 foot fall occurs in the middle and 100 million gallons of water flow over it every day. They are at their most intense during the spring from all the snow melt. Along with the falls, there is a campground and rental cabins to stay. There are boat rentals to take out on Lake Britton and plenty of fishing in the park as well. I love that the Pacific Crest Trail travels through this park on its way to Canada. Definitely worth the stop to get out and enjoy this "Eighth Wonder of the World" per President Theodore Roosevelt.

Yelp
This was the perfect side trip my wife and I did while we were in Redding, CA... About an hour-drive northeast of our location, McArthur - Burney Falls Memorial State Park is a popular destination primarily because of the majestic Burney Falls located inside the park. Dedicated as a National Natural Landmark in 1954, it attracts roughly 250,000 visitors each year and reached 350,000 during the peak pandemic years. Due to the high foot traffic, erosion has caused the Burney Falls Loop Trail to be temporarily closed during the spring and summer months of 2024. We were here in 2022 so we got to see the waterfall in all its splendor. The mile-long trail took us from the overlook down to the base and back. The fall stands 129-ft high and even with an average water temperature of 45°F, people were taking a dip in the ice-cold pool. We stayed for about an hour down below, hopping from one rock to another. We took nothing but photos, left nothing but footprints, and killed nothing but time. We came in early so we avoided the horrible queue of vehicles along CA-89 trying to get into the park. Recognized as "the Eighth Wonder of the World" by President Theodore Roosevelt, a March 2021 National Geographic article mentioned Burney Falls as one of NorCal's most spectacular waterfalls. Just two solid reasons why people have been making their way here.

Yelp
National natural landmark [Burney CA] Parking fee is $10. Park hours are 8:00a to sunset. We arrived around 9:25a and we found there to be plenty more parking. Burney Falls from the parking lot was just a short walk at 150-ft. The park is best known for the spectacular 129 foot tall Burney Falls. It does get crowded. The viewing area at the top of the falls was pretty but our visit was limited. The hike down to the base is 0.3 miles. Unfortunately, this popular hike down to the falls was temporarily closed for critical repairs. Bummer. Yes, Falls Loop Trail and Burney Creek Trail are temporarily closed for improvements until the remaining of 2024. The General Store had a nice supply of merchandise and souvenirs. It also stocked some sundries and groceries for campers -- baked beans, pork & beans, SPAM, sausage, coffee and cream, cereal, canned soup are just a few. McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park is the second oldest park in the California State Park system. Review #3454

Yelp
The observation point is open to the public for $10 a car parking but the trail to get down to see the waterfall is currently closed to renovation until the end of 2024. It is crowded on the weekend but peaceful on weekday. There is nothing much to do here if you can't walk down to see the waterfall. I spend at most 30 minutes for it. The park ranger will give you a fine if you climb down under the trail To perk at the waterfall so just be saved to not risk it.
google avatar

Chandrika B.

Yelp
The waterfall view is amazing but the trail to go down to get the full feel of it is closed :( i wish the rangers let us know ahead of time. It took us 20+ minutes to get in and then another 10 mins to find parking on a sunday with $10 and then we spent 5 whole minutes admiring the falls with 30+ people trying to take a pic from the tiny viewing gallery. Just come back in 2025 to see it from down below
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
Solid place to visit or camp at. The sites are well shaded, on soft dirt, have showers, and are well marked. The day use area is also beautiful on the lake peninsula. You can rent kayaks at that area. Showers use shower tokens which you can buy at the shower stalls. One dollar gives you two tokens, and one token gives two minutes of showering (so one dollar is four minutes of showering). For summer 2024 the trail to the lower falls is closed due to construction so you're limited to the observation deck.

Yelp
Visiting McArthur Burney Falls State Park was an awe-inspiring experience that left me speechless. The waterfall here is nothing short of majestic - in fact, it surpasses any I've seen, including those in Hawaii. Standing face to face with this natural wonder filled me with a profound sense of peace and freedom. The short hike to reach the waterfall adds to the adventure, allowing you to immerse yourself in the beauty of the surrounding landscape. As you traverse the trails, it's essential to remember to leave no trace, especially if you bring food to enjoy at the end of the hike. Overall, McArthur Burney Falls State Park is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking to connect with nature and witness the breathtaking beauty of its waterfall. It's an experience that will stay with you long after you've left, reminding you of the power and wonder of the natural world.

Yelp
The third time's the charm! That's how many attempts we've made to visit Burney Falls over the years and we were finally successful!*. Yay! You can get a great view of the falls just by walking 300 feet from the parking lot. Hike the 1.3 mile loop and you'll be misted by the raging water and rewarded with the massive falls right in front of you. This place gets really crowded with day trippers, so get there early! Parking is $10 in the park, and space is limited. We saw plenty of cars on the side of the road outside of the park where there are clear "no parking" signs and they were definitely getting ticketed. You've been warned! We stayed in the campground (site 60) for two nights. Our friends also had site 6, which was nice too. The sites were spacious and equipped with a picnic table and fire pit. The bathrooms were clean and they also had hot showers available. Lake Britton is walking distance as well and they have boats or paddle boards to rent. We brought our inflatable SUPs/kayaks and launched on the beach. So many fun things to do here! -------- 1st attempt: Super crowded, parking lot full and 100+ degrees. Onward! 2nd attempt: Fires and AQI over 500. Yah, we're canceling our campground reservation.

Yelp
Wow is what I said when I saw the falls. This waterfall is amazing. There is a nice path to the falls and a walking path around the falls, that is worth walking. The park lot is not large, we went on a Thursday so we had no problem parking. There are a number of spots to see the falls. Each one is amazing . If you're in the area it's worth the stop.

Yelp
Great great great spur of the moment road-trip. First stop Burney Falls, about 60 minutes east of Redding, CA. Super busy, long wait but worth it. Excellent customer service by park's employees, very helpful and friendly. Nice 3.5 miles round trip hike as I parked at lake. Easy hike, some hills plus stairs and paved path down to waterfalls. Saw deer, marmot, lots of photo opportunities. More beautiful than I'd anticipated. Worth it! $10 fee to gain access, plenty of parking near lake, lots of campsites, plenty of clean restrooms, closest parking near falls access unavailable.

Yelp
A California gem!!! My first time ever at Burney Falls was actually yesterday, a little late on the review but I had such a great time. It's so worth the drive if you can. I recommend you get an early start especially in the summer because it can be a bit humid in the afternoon. From where I am it takes about 4.5 hours to reach Burney Falls. The nice thing though once you get in the park there is plenty of parking, a $10 entrance fee, & once you get settled the falls are just a 10 min hike. Quite unexpected but so pretty. If you can take a backpack with all the essentials: sunscreen, portal battery, waters, extra shoes like flip flops, snacks, phone and whatever else comes to mind :) ( but just in case you forgot the snacks lol they have a general store pretty much everything you need) But back to the falls.... The immediate weather change to the falls is so amazing!! A 90 day down to 70. And the water is so blue; ive never seen such turquoise water in my life. Its hard to find my favorite pictures to choose from but heres a few i think you all might enjoy :)
google avatar

Dang L.

Yelp
We went early in the morning. $10 for entrance fee. Pay it yourself station. It was a bit cool as it was 8 am but still got a great experience and gorgeous view of the fall. Walk form parking to the fall is not too bad.

Yelp
This review is for the Burney Falls Loop which was a ~1 mile round trip that took ~35 mins to complete. Amazing waterfall views within the first 5-10 minutes of the hike! There was also a $10 day use parking fee. Plenty of parking spots with a restroom. Short video of the hike for those interested: https://youtu.be/5peO0YQDmv4

Yelp
McArther-Burney Falls Memorial State Park, Burney, CA - August 13, 2023 After being told this park can fill up fast, especially on weekends and during school breaks, we arrived a little before 9:30 am. We got our parking pass and found a shady spot to park near the Visitors Center. There was plenty of parking at this time on this particular Saturday. No dogs on the trails here; however, dogs are allowed at the top of the viewing area looking down at the magnificent falls. And oh, are the falls ever magnificent! Called "the Eighth Wonder of the World" by President Theodore Roosevelt in the first decade of the 20th Century, the falls are at their most intense during the spring, from early April through October, when snowmelt is at its peak. We've been to quite a few falls across the country, Canada, and Central America. Let's face it, most falls are great to look at and experience - the roaring brilliance and hypnotic draw of Niagara Falls on the US/Canadian border, Upper and Lower Yosemite Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls at Yosemite National Park, Multnomah and other cascading falls on the Columbia River Gorge, the La Paz Falls in the Costa Rican rainforest. Those and many more, all spectacular in their own right; however, I venture to say that Burney Falls, at over 100 feet high, 250 feet across, and with a flow of 100 million gallons per day, is among the finest I've ever seen as it thunders down into the emerald green-blue pond below. It captivates seniors and youngsters alike. There is a trail that takes you to the base of the falls and continues on to creat a 1-mile loop. Fido couldn't join us on this 20 minute venture, so we took turns watching him so that we could each get the whole picture. Even if you don't do the full loop, at least treat yourself to walking the 1/8 mile path to the base. The sights, sounds, and overall feel are unforgettable. The Visitors Center was closed while we were there, but we did check out the gift shop, which has the usual types of memorabilia - patches, mugs, hats, pictures, etc. I bought a lapel pin ($6) to add to my collection, which now stands at over 120 pins. There is also a good-sized campground in the park with over 125 sites that have picnic tables, fire pits, a bear lockers. No hookups that we saw, but there are water faucets and bathrooms, as well as showers. Lake Britton is also in the park. It has a boat launch and boat rentals. It's a good size lake, 9 miles long by 1 mile wide. However, the water didn't look all that appealing to me. It had lots of green algae. Apparently, though, there's some pretty good fishing there, bass, Crappie, and the like. Overall, the park is worth checking out for the waterfalls alone!

Yelp
Wow!! I must have said this 100 times! It's breathtaking here!! It was rainy when we arrived, but stopped after about 20 minutes! The views are spectacular and the hike is fun!! I can't wait to come back during the summer time and see it again!! This is what I love about California! More pictures: https://www.youtube.com/@TripItUp

Yelp
While visiting Lassen Volcanic NP in mid September, I took a day to visit Burney Falls which is about a 45 minute drive. Because CA had a wet winter, the falls were spectacular in September and worth the visit. Surprisingly, the falls are steps away from the parking lot and there are viewing platforms from which to view the falls. Being the adventurers that we are we went to the base of the falls and climbed down the moderately treacherous embankment to take photos and sit on the rocks and have our lunch. Due to repairs, not all the trails are open, but the ones surrounding the falls were open. Although the General Store had a sign that tours met at the Visitor's Center on certain days, the Visitor's Center was closed and there was no one at 12pm to lead the tour. Moreover, the water spigots were turned off, but the water fountains were working. Despite the lack of services, visiting during the off season has the advantage of less crowds and available parking spaces. By October, there was another sign that the General Store would be closing for the winter. When visiting the falls, you don't need to spend more than a couple hours which gave us time to visit the nearby free lava tube attraction. Lastly, the fishing is allowed at the base of the falls, but it's catch and release and you need to report your catch, but not at the Visitor's Center because it was closed the day we visited.
google avatar

Micki M.

Yelp
Can't give Burney less than five stars! It is such a magical place! It can be very crowded during the summer months, but if you visit during October, the crowds aren't too bad. The only drawback was that it's super cold in the morning. It was quite an adjustment coming from Sacramento. We came here in October, our temp in the mornings were in the 60's and it was probably 20 degrees or less here. The fee to get into the park was $10, which is a great deal considering all the trails and there's also Lake Britton to visit on the other side of the park. I don't consider this park dog friendly only because dogs are allowed only on the cemetery trail. So, if you want to visit, visit when it's cooler out so your pooch can wait in the car.
google avatar

Edward W.

Yelp
We got in around 830am in a Saturday and there was barely any parking. By the time we left there were cars parked all along the highway. You'll get towed if you leave it there but I saw at least 50 cars parked, park at your own risk. Burney Falls is nothing short of spectacular. Short walk and amazing sprawling waterfall. At least 15 degrees cooler at the waterfall level. Water is freezing cold and not really comfortable for a dip.
google avatar

Nichole R.

Yelp
There are few places that I wish I could experience again for the first time but Burney Falls is one of them! What an incredibly beautiful sight. $10 gets you into the parking lot, from there you can go to the visitors center, general store, use their very clean bathrooms and go see the falls! You can see them from the lookout, or you can take the short waterfall loop walk and get down close to the falls! My 5 year old did complain the entire walk back up, but it really wasn't bad. If you're driving through definitely stop in! Pure magic!
google avatar

Tracy L.

Yelp
We are on our way to Lassen National Park, and I decided to stop here for a visit to the waterfall. Although it took a few extra hours between commute and the hike, it was well worth it! It was $10 to get into the park per car. The visitor center, bathrooms, general store and parking lot were right by the entrance. The visitor center is quiet small, and if you want your kids to do their Junior Ranger program, stop there to get the details on the time and place for that. We walked down to the falls and took our time taking photos, then did the Falls Loop Trail. It was an easy loop, with some sections where you have to walk up hill, but it was nothing too strenuous. It was also largely shaded so that kept it nice. This is a very nice stop, and it was not crowded at all in a Friday afternoon in June.
google avatar

Noren R.

Yelp
Amazing. This is worth the visit. If you go earlier you will have better chances at finding parking closer to the falls. This is important especially if you have younger ones . Overflow parking is down by the lake. It's gorgeous but about a one mile hike up to get to the falls. And then you must think of the hike back. Doable for adults not so much for 2 and 5 year olds. I would want to visit again to go to the gift shop. It was too long of a line for my kids. I saw they have ice cream cones too.
google avatar

Rom H.

Yelp
A must stop and visit site on the list. Big camp ground, clean restroom. $10 entrance fee and stay all day until the park closed. It was very hot in the summer but once I'm near the waterfall, my excitement takes over. Walk along the path to the bottom...love it! Feel the mist, air, chill air of the fall. Temperature changes to cool because of the water. So cool like ac, I don't want to drive back to a 107 degree!

Yelp
Burney Falls is such a beauty! The scenic views of the waterfall and quality air, we really enjoyed our time here. We drove up from Davis to Redding and stayed a night there before heading over to Burney Falls the next morning. I highly recommend heading over here early because by the time we left in the afternoon, the traffic was jam packed waiting to enter the park. Once inside the park, we made our way to see the Burney Falls Overlook and while there were a good amount of people, it wasn't super packed. After a good time spent taking in the majestic falls and clear blue water, we did the Loop Trail which was a easy 1.2 mile hike to see more of the scenery. We finished our trip here with a picnic at one of the picnic tables and visited the gift shop to pick up some souvenirs. Overall, we had a pleasant time visiting Burney Falls.
google avatar

Harold S.

Yelp
Everybody goes here, of course, to see the waterfall. It is definitely worth seeing. There is a $10 admission charge. The day I arrived there was nobody on duty at the gate and you had to purchase your pass from a vending machine in the parking lot. It accepts cash or credit cards. Don't try to skip paying, as I did see a ranger on the grounds and you could get a steep fine. The trail to the falls is directly across from the parking lot. You can go left if you want to take the longer trail, but if you go right the short trail goes right down to the base of the falls. It's only 0.3 miles but beware it is steep and you will have to climb back up. You can view the falls from higher up if you don't want to walk down, but the view from down there is definitely worth it.
google avatar

Elaine N.

Yelp
Decided to go here with a friend on a Saturday recently and there was a good amount of people. It was in the low 60s that day, so it was a bit chilly, but I feel like it might always be like that since there are a lot of tall trees blocking the sun. You have to pay $10 to get in, since that leads to the parking lot. When we got into Burney Falls around 1:25pm, we decided to take what is considered to be the "shorter" route to get to the bottom of the waterfall, which meant we took the path on the right. It only took us about 30 minutes to get to the bottom of the waterfall, but it would've been faster if we didn't stop to take so many pictures. There are also multiple other waterfalls minutes away from this area, but Burney Falls was the biggest and nicest one we saw. It has a paved pathway leading down to the bottom and a rocky path to get even closer to it. At this waterfall, it feels like there are nice angles to take pictures of it throughout the way down. For me, I felt the waterfall looked best at the main area near the top where others are taking pictures. I'd recommend this place! It's a nice little hike which is very easy to go through since it is mostly a paved cement pathway. I even saw some little kids there, so it's easy enough for kids too.
google avatar

Noel K.

Yelp
One of the best waterfall places to visit in California. It's an easy trail with no incline or steep steps. Walking from the parking lot to the falls only takes about 10-15 minutes. Parking is not free. You have to pay a $10 fee for the day. Regrettably, dogs are not permitted on the trail but are welcome at the top of the viewing area. I have visited this park a few times and am always amazed by its beauty. Walking down to the fall feels great on a hot day, which is perfect since the waterfall cools you down quickly. However, the water is freezing, so diving in is not recommended. The view really takes your breath away!

Yelp
What an epic trip to remember in 2021! So worth the time to visit this beautiful park in north California by Shasta. We decided to do a day trip and let me tell you it was so worth the 4+ plus hour drive from the Bay Area! It was our day trip date. We drove here during the weekday so it was not super busy during the summer. There is a $10 dollar per car entrance and plenty of parking. We parked by the general store so we could have soft serve ice cream after our hike. Walking down to the Burney falls was easy but to swim? It's like 40+ degree temps. Just dipping my feet froze my feet after a while. We only did the mile loop hike to top of falls through a bridge. So beautiful to see the rushing clear water. Awwww! Make sure to bring sandals or water hiking shoes to cool off in the water from the hot weather. I think it's best to see Burney falls during the summer even if the weather is super hot. I would visit here during the winter but we don't have 4x4 cars anymore and it snows here. Looking at other Yelpers, their winter visit here was beautiful to see all white and rushing waterfalls! My pictures are still nice but being here is better than pictures...there are camping grounds with cabins close by with lots of shade and a launch deck for boats by the lake. We will be back to camp when there are more availability! Chasing waterfalls has been our things to do and visit during this pandemic as it's still to scary to travel. This was well worth the visit! Totally recommend! [35th/100]

Beautiful and majestic scenery in Northern California. We spent a day there swimming, paddle boarding and taking in Burney falls.

Yelp
It's sort of difficult to write a review for something that appears to have just one main attraction to draw you in. But as you get inside you'll learn there is much more to this than meets the eye. At first I was a little bit of learn because it was a weekend but the lines waiting to go into the park were very very long and we couldn't figure out why. I looked at my wife and my daughter and as we question that we realized there was a game going on at the school before you get to the park and they were all waiting to get into the game. However there was still a bit of a line at the park itself so be prepared. 1 as you get there and start looking over the map describing what's available to view in the park you realize there's a big lake with all the things that drop people to Lakes, camping, barbecuing, picnicking, hundreds of miles of Mountain Trails through pristine valleys and Hills, and a waterfall that will make your jaw drop wondering how it comes to be. Since this is about the Falls I will just speak to that directly by itself. First you hear it and the closer you get the louder it gets and as you walked up to the edge of the hillside to look down upon the waterfall itself your eyes widen with anticipation. This is the part where a little geology comes in. You have your top layer of Earth on top of the layer of basalt the water between the two flows out of cracks in the face of the waterfall. And this may be hard for you to understand how this works but just look it up in the videos where the pictures. The top layer is a stream that flows over the top. And the to meet on the way down. So it looks like there's hundreds of Little Falls creeping out of the middle of the canyon wall and one giant fall over the top. Now that you have your mind wrapped around this, you must go see them.. But it was worth the long drive to get there and see this incredible natural phenomenon. It's great fun for young and old families and individuals. It's totally worth a swing in to see one of our beautiful natural wonders in California. If you like this review please don't forget to mark your vote below and follow me. Thank you.

Yelp
Absolutely lovely spot. Long lines to get in so be prepared or come back after 5 pm, which is still great and far fewer crowds. Do yourself the favor (if physically able) and walk the 1.2 mile loop. Go down paved trail to falls 1st and return with gentle incline up the backside of the river/falls. Be wary of instagrammers acting stupid.

Yelp
It would be hard to say something about the magic of Burney Falls that hasn't already been said before. But I'd be remiss if I didn't share my experience and a wonderful morning at this park. Id been visiting Lassen National Park and staying in Chester so this was a good 90 minute drive away-worth it! A friend of mine tried to visit on a Sunday and got turned away as the parking does get full and there's no street parking. I opted to go on a Monday morning and had no issues. Entry is $10 per car but I was able to use my CA Parks pass. Near the parking areas are clean restrooms, a gift shop/general store and visitor center. The falls themselves...no words. They're spring fed, so flow year round and my boyfriend, who isn't one to be overly excited about waterfalls, couldn't stop talking about spectacular they were. We did the short falls loop hike, counterclockwise and enjoyed an oddly overcast and not too warm August hike that included the falls, the rushing creek and forest paths. There are longer trails you can take, including a spur up to the PCT. Some trails are closed for restoration and the park website gives you updates. Burney Falls are truly special. Worth a detour if you're visiting the Lassen or Shasta areas (afterwards we drove further north to the Shasta-Trinity forest to round our day. Another gem of a state park!

Yelp
Where do I begin with this majestic place. Finally landed reservations to camp here and the wait was well worth it. When my boyfriend and I arrived around 11:00 am, we set up camp and decided to take a two minute drive back towards the entrance to save all our energy to see the falls and hike the fall's loop. Thankfully, there was tons of parking by the waterfalls. From what I've read, this place gets super packed on the weekends but we lucked out being that it wasn't super busy due to the fires happening nearby. We spent about 30 minutes ooooing and ahhhing at the foot of the falls which was less than half a mile from the parking lot. The hike to the top of the falls was extremely easy and lots to look at along the way. We even stopped at the top, at the end of the loop, to take a quick (super super cold) dip. Quick as in -sat in the water for 1 minute until the lower half of my body became numb! After our hike we ate lunch at our campsite and refueled for the next part of our adventure. Following lunch, we drove 5 minutes to the opposite end of the park to check out Lake Britton. We arrived and there was ample amount of parking. Plenty of families hanging out, bbqing, and swimming. We swam until the sun went down. The views were amazing at sunset, 10/10 highly recommended ending the day there. I can't wait to come back to this place.

Yelp
Wow the 3.5 hours drive was worth it! Absolutely breathtaking view! And you don't even have to hike far. There's a general store for some snacks and ice cream

Yelp
I knew about this place for a while and finally decided to stop by. We came really early in the morning. Park entrance fee is $10. There's parking but it seems to be a little small. You can literally hear the water fall from the parking lot. It is a very short walk and it is paved. It's a go place to go even for little kids or elderly since it's an easy walk. The pictures come out amazing. There's a small general store. There is plenty of bathrooms. We didn't explore the park past that. Highly recommend coming at least once

Yelp
Boo. Get your parking together state park slackers! Rather than blocking traffic for good people, why don't you get one of your workers to direct traffic for all those that got suckered in to look at your lackluster water. Stopping in the middle of the road for a parking spot?! Backing up traffic to turn into the full parking lot?! LAME. Charge the suckers more so you can fix your parking. You're disturbing the peace of the outlands for your selfish city curiosity.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite parks ever: gorgeous waterfall, easy hike, ample picnic tables, clean bathrooms, large campground, and no huge crowds. Are there any other parks you know that has all that?

Yelp
I really enjoy this spot to clear my head and get away from the city. Took a 4 mile hike to test my endurance and I survived! Had an expensive soft serve ice cream cone from the general store that opened today. Great place to getaway and process life. Always clean, no debris from humans. $10 parking per vehicle.

Yelp
Went yesterday for a short while and had a fantastic time! The loop hike was easy enough and was very shaded which was lovely. They also had a cute little gift shop with some really good soft serve. It cost $10 to get the car in to park and there was quite a bit of a line when we got there.

Yelp
The falls is breathtaking! We went on a weekday morning so it wasn't crowded which was nice. There's an easy loop around the falls and you can split from the loop to get on PCT. You can go on for awhile on the PCT. Bring cash because entrance fee is $10/car!

Yelp
It doesn't matter if you are only in the town of Burney for ONE day/night. You MUST visit this location. It is really beautiful and breathtaking. We spent a few hours here just taking the trail and then sitting in our lounge chairs enjoy the views and the people. There are some very clean restrooms here, which I took a liking too. The local store was closed unfortunately during our Saturday visit. Although this seems to be a great place to bring you dog with you. There are signs posted no dogs on the trail. But there are ways around it I'm sure (dog carrier) hehehe. But besides that, this is a must do journey! Solo, couples or groups. This for everyone

Yelp
What a beautiful place! The views are breathtaking! When you're closer to the falls, the temperature is a bit lower and there's a thin mist that fills the air. It doesn't particularly get you wet, but it has a cooling effect. Be careful though, the rocks are sharp. We saw someone have an accident and leave with quite the wound. Wear good shoes and travel carefully.

Yelp
AMAZING. WATERFALL. My boyfriend and I drove 15+ hours to get here (lots of supercharging stops) !! We originally had planned to go to Lassen Volcanic National Park, but when the first storm of the season hit at the beginning of November, the roads were closed all weekend ): We decided to go to Burney Falls instead. I told my boyfriend it was going to be the most epic waterfall we've seen to date. It was so cute to look back and see him stop every five steps to take a photo. He was in such awe :') It's a far drive from Orange County, but it is so. worth. it. AND it's only a five minute walk from where you park your car! No hike necessary! (Although I think it would make it a far more rewarding experience, but I love that it is accessible to EVERYONE.)

Yelp
Came on a Saturday around noon. Knowing everyone had the same idea to come during Labor Day weekend. Please advise if you notice traffic 2 miles out or even a mile, that means people are trying to get into the lot. Luckily we were smart amongst others is to park on the side of the road and walk to the park. It took most people to get in an hour if you felt like waiting. Anyhoot short beautiful hike. Mother nature's creation at its best. As you approach the falls the temperature drops with the cooler. You have a choice to take a dip or put your feet in the water. Just being there was serene. If you're looking for a waterfall 4hrs away from the Bay, definitely worth it.

Yelp
Yes this is McArthur Burney Falls State Park....but everyone comes here specifically to view Burney Falls. And because of Burney Falls....this place for me was absolutely worth 5 stars! Over my recent travels...I have easily transformed into a waterfalls aficionado...that's for sure. And...as I was making may way south along the Pacific Northwest region of the United States during my summer road trip...I knew that Burney Falls was at the top of my priority list. I actually came here the day after Labor day...on a quiet Tuesday. This was the PERFECT time for me to visit because...I can totally envision this park getting VERY CROWDED during popular summer times when kids and families are out of school and...also I felt extremely fortunate to have explored here right before the tragic California wildfires made their way north into Oregon and beyond. So...I am thankful to have explored Burney Falls just in time. Actually, I was coming from the Mt. Shasta area of California about 50 miles west of Burney Falls and Mt. Shasta had been inaccessible because of the wildfires. Oh well, I guess you win some and you lose some. I arrived at Burney Falls very early in the morning especially when I knew Mt. Shasta was closed and the wildfires were spreading. It's $10 entrance fee. No problem. There was no attendant at the front gate or entrance area so I put the $10 in an envelope and placed it into a drop box. I immediately parked and headed straight for the falls. Access to the falls was very straightforward. From the parking lot there was a sign saying 75 feet to Burney Falls Overlook and then 1/3 mile to the heart of it all...the base of the falls. And also, for those interested...at the base of Burney Falls was a 1.2 mile round trip Falls Loop Trail. I hiked this 1.2 mile path after I finished discovering the majesty of Burney Falls, but found the hike to be mediocre...nothing to see other than appreciating walking around in nature. From the Falls Overlook, the views were decent (I did take 1 picture from here), though I was ready for the good stuff and making my way down the 1/3 mile path to the base where the real special scenery was. Once I made my way to the base...I was in awe! It was everything that I expected it to be...from all the pictures I'd seen on the internet. I was pretty blown away. I tell ya, lol...waterfalls are my new found thing. They really (at least for me) put me in this zone of just being so grateful to travel to such wonderful scenery...I never take stuff like this granted. For me visiting here about 8am on Tuesday morning...it was quiet. There were a couple of other visitors but I certainly had plenty of opportunities to take photos of Burney Falls in it's whole glory without anyone interrupting me. Lol...and I was afforded views and picture moments that really made my time here worthwhile. I would say for morning time, it was a little dark and with some patchy shadows. But still, I had to accept sort of the hand I was dealt. I was anticipating more folks coming to visit. And...I had read that Burney Falls got very crowded. So I knew I had to appreciate the quietness while I had it regardless of the early morning shade. I found Burney Falls to be most colorful a little ways up the path...not totally before the bottom at the base, but on the last switchback as I finished the 1/3 mile. You may understand this when you're there. Also, I walked straight onto the rocks as far as I could go to photograph the falls as close as possible. From the pathway at the base...the falls were a little too far away from me. So I recommend venturing onto the rocks for sure...as others were doing this as well. At times there were people hogging the prime photo spot for the falls. So, I did walk back up the pathway forging my way down the rocks to create a little private space for my photographs. Though when I did this...I wasn't able to entirely centerpiece the falls. Still, at least it afforded me another perspective to take everything in. Finally...Burney Falls is located inside McArthur State Park. I didn't even know this prior to visiting. Here at the state park, there were really good spots for picnicking with cabanas, tables and benches. There were bathrooms offered as well and although it was closed due to the pandemic...they even had a gift shop. The entire ambiance at Burney Falls and McArthur State Park was terrific. It's great for families and or simply just hanging outside and taking in the fresh air. I would even return just to have a picnic regardless of whether the falls were situated here or not. Overall, Burney Falls was one giant "painting canvas" of cascading flowing falls... a prime chance for terrific picture moments. I 100% appreciated my visit witnessing nature at it's finest.

Yelp
"There's no better place to find yourself that sitting by a waterfall and listening to it's music."―Roland R Kemler I'm a little ashamed that I had to be coaxed into visiting here (because it was going to add 2+hrs onto the ride home), but fortunately Carissa has a way with words. This place is simply spectacular and well-worth a stop if you're ever in Redding or on the way to visit Mt. Lassen. The Good: -Spectacular views -Swell ±1-mile loop that takes you around the falls and over a few bridges -Camping onsite -General store/visitors center onsite that's loaded with goodies. -Clean, flush-able restrooms as well as overflow port-o-potties The Meh: -$10/day-use parking but its free if you have a CA Golden Poppy Pass (which we do) The Ugly: -The crowds can get pretty bad even during The 'Rona™ SiP, so probably best to get here early.

Yelp
In Northern California and feel like going for a drive? This place is worth it. The waterfall is impressive and you will not need to hike long at all. There is a small fee to access the park. There are restrooms and pick nick tables. I do recommend bringing lunch if you will be there for a day. Once you park and start hiking down, the waterfall is the first thing you will see. The rest of the hike is pretty simple and short, only the uphill part is moderately strenuous. Another recommendation is to arrive early, before the sun is above the waterfall (for the best pictures).

Yelp
If you have not seen Burney Falls yet, PLEASE FIND SOME TIME TO GO SEE IT. Yes, it is located at McArthur Burney Falls State Park. We are from the Bay Area but decided to stay at an AirBnB in Redding, CA for a weekend at the beginning of January. It was about a 1 hour and 30 minute drive to see these gorgeous falls and wow, was it worth it. We got to the park around 8:30am and no one was there! There is a $10.00 fee per car. We put it in the small manila envelopes provided at the ticket box/front gate and put in the drop-box since there was no attendant. From the parking area, there are signs directing you where to go to see the falls overlook and base of the falls. The hike down to the base of the waterfalls was simple, nothing too extreme, however I do recommend to wear hiking shoes and bring a jacket as it does get chilly the closer you get to the falls. Since we did go in the morning, it wasnt as bright as some mid day photos and at the base it was very misty so it was difficult to get closer as the rocks were slippery. REGARDLESS, IT WAS BEAUTIFUL, just be careful. TL;DR - Burney Falls is a stunningly beautiful MUST SEE waterfall destination and pretty accessible. 10/10, WILL GO AGAIN DURING SUMMER TO WITNESS ITS BEAUTY IN A DIFFERENT SEASON.

Yelp
I've been eyeing Burney Falls for a couple of months now but haven't been able to make it out there because of SiP orders. Now that we have lightly reopened, I planned a weekend trip with my girlfriend and her kids to check out this "eight wonder of the world" (referenced by President Theodore Roosevelt). The one way drive for me was about 6 hours so we broke up the trip by staying overnight in Redding. When leaving Redding, the drive to Burney is so scenic and relaxing. The drive in itself was worth it! When you arrive to the park grounds, there is a $10 per vehicle fee you must pay. Cash or card are accepted. I would suggest arriving early because it does get very packed -- especially on the weekends. There is a General Store that sells all sorts of necessities for your outdoor adventures and a good "oops, I forgot _______" for all my campers. The walk down to the base of the Falls is .03 miles and the Falls Loop trail is a little over a mile which makes it a very easy hike for just about anyone. The waterfall itself is simply gorgeous. There are not enough words to describe how peaceful one can feel when gazing at the landscape. I'll attach photos to the review so readers can get an idea of what to expect but it's one of those places that you must see for yourself. P.S. I had my two nieces and nephew with me -- ages 8 to 14 and the Falls Loop was easy peasy for them. Good spot for all my Yelp friends that have little ones. Don't forget to pack a lunch so you can have a picnic!

Yelp
So last year I had the pleasure to visit this majestic place . So I'm lucky enough to have the pleasure to visit once again yesterday. The bad part was I could share the beautiful of Burney Falls yesterday due to no reception in the area but this time around I'm making sure to finish my review the next day. If you live in California you must visit the falls. I'm more than sure I'll be back again.
