It pains me to give the Burwood Tap two stars, but it's unfortunately necessary.
The Burwood Tap was one of my favorite bars in the city for years, due to its laid-back atmosphere and rockin juke box. Affectionately known as "The Wood" by my close group of friends, we would take over several tables at least once a week, and jam out to our favorite tunes emanating from the bar. If you've ever been subjected to back-to-back renditions of "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights," it was likely our fault. If you ever see us out - we'll buy you a beer to make up for it.
At any rate, our friends had a love affair with the Wood. It was that bar that everyone either loved or hated. Sure it was small, dark, crowded with 21-ish year old DePaul frat rats, but you put up with that SAE dude puking in the toilet in the bathroom because the waitresses brought you free shots, gave you a hug when you walked in and made us seem like we were the crew from Cheers.
Burwood Tap - I'm sorry to say, but it's over. This is an official break-up note. I'm not sure if it's the fact that I'm now 27 years old, and don't enjoy the puking 21 year olds any more. No, no...I know it's that. But more than anything, the juke box is no longer plugged in and the music they play is AWFUL. On a recent Friday night visit, I was subjected to FERGIE. Not once, but twice. And in only an hour and a half. If you're going to play me crappy music and serve me overpriced Miller Lite, there is no reason to patronize your establishment.
I wanted to make it work. I tried. I've had birthday parties in your backroom, smoked cigarettes at the bar with my best friends and even played on a kickball team sponsored by you. But I'm sorry Burwood Tap, it's time to move on. I know it'll be hard for us to see each other when I pass, but you'll hold a special place in my heart. Maybe someday we'll be at a place when I can come in and share a beer and a story for old times sake..."Remember the time..." We'll both laugh and it'll be time for me to get going to my new bar, across town. But for that one moment we'll both remember the way the Burwood Tap used to be, and the way I'd like to remember it.
