5 Best Day Trips from Chicago | Condé Nast Traveler

"This stylish bistro is a welcome respite, with white table cloths, warm lighting, and local art on walls. A small list of tightly curated wines spans the globe, but the draw here is Butch's 200-plus beer selection, spanning micro, craft, and imported beers and ciders. The menu is a selection of New American classics, and Butch's prides itself on working closely with local purveyors, listing its local partners prominently on the website. When in Holland, head here for a sophisticated, special dinner that is elevated but unfussy." - Jessi Roti, Joseph Hernandez

A really good restaurant. Great cocktails and wines during happy hour (4-6pm). Staff was great. I chatted with several locals and tourists during happy hour as I tried various wines and cocktails, and then got a table on the back patio with outdoor seating. Had the burger paired with a really nice Gamay. IMO the best place in town for a nice private dinner, or sitting inside at the bar. First time you go there it is a bit tricky finding the bathroom (but locals had funny stories about it).

My cocktail was to die for. They were accommodating with my kids and their allergies, making sure to confirm allergens with the kitchen so we could adjust orders respectively. The sourdough starter was shared between 4 of us (2 adults 2 kids) and was a favorite.

We went here for my birthday. It was a lovely place! But my partner and I had some feedback: 1. Old Fashioned: my partner ordered this. It was too strong. A lot of the sugar was sitting on the bottom and not mixed in. However the more he drank and swirled, it became more watered down and easier to drink. 2. Rib Eye Steak: 6/10 For the price, this missed the mark. The fat was not cooked enough and the meat was somewhat rubbery - may have been frozen. It needed more salt and pepper before cooking and I ended up rubbing the butter from our bread to help enhance the flavor. The house Demi did not do enough to make up for it unfortunately. Recommendation: Go to a steak house instead if you have a steak craving. 3. Sourdough Bread: it was really good! But salty (I know it says salt in the menu, but it was really salty). And it was not worth the price (you get like four pieces of bread for $10) Now on to the positives! 1. The Dark and Stormy cocktail was really good as well as the glass of wine we ordered. They have many to choose from. 2. The chicken I ordered was really good! Very juicy. I just wish it came with a side. 3. The service was very good. We were directed to our seats right away and our server was very friendly and attentive. 4. I love the tulip wine glasses! They are very cute! 5. Espresso: Tasted freshly ground. Good flavor and not too acidic. 6. Fall Gelato: Seasonal. Best thing on the menu! Fall notes: cinnamon, gingerbread. Not overly sweet. Bottom Line: Lovely place, worth a try. We would still come back, but will try different things!

I wasn't overly impressed with the food I received. I ordered gnocchi and scallops. The portion size was very small. Only two scallops the size of quarters, and they were slightly overdone. It was bland unfortunately. The drinks were very good and had the right amount of alcohol. I understand the target customer but for the price of everything, I would have rather spent it at Ruth's Chris.

Google
Very hit or miss. The restaurant itself was very nice, good ambiance, nice music. The seater was a sweetheart, the server was ok. The food was both good and bad. The crab dip was burnt on the edges and my scallops were raw but the burrata and beet salad was heavenly and Conor’s pork chop was perfection.

I worked in Holland for 4 days a week from 2010 to 2016 and ate at Butch’s frequently during that time. We were in Holland over the weekend and decided to dine at Butch’s since it was one of our favorites. I had a Jungle Bird cocktail which was great. We were dining with another couple and we ordered two plates of scallops which were excellent. In the past, they used to have a scallops entree but now it is only available as an appetizer. I had the grilled hanger steak and my wife had the shrimp spaghetti, both were really good. I had the hanger steak years ago and it’s just as great as it was before. We were really happy that Butch’s remains a great place for dinner in Holland. The staff are still very friendly and all have pleasant personalities. I highly recommend this place if you are in Holland. Make a reservation a few days early or you may be waiting for a table. There is plenty of street parking available.

Google
We sat at the bar (tables were available but we wanted the bar). We had a nice bottle of wine ($60). We had the scallops ($18) as an app. For meals my husband had the chili walleye ($32) and I had the filet ($56). It was worth every penny! Jeanette was our bartender/server and she was wonderful! It was an excellent atmosphere. It's family friendly, casual but at the same time classy and fine dining. We will definitely be back!

Google
We visited this restaurant during the Tulip festival so as expected it was very busy after the parade. The atmosphere is rustic & staff accommodating. The steak was delicious and cooked perfectly. The mushroom Demi sauce was very delicious. The best ever. The burger was also delicious. Unfortunately, the only Distraction was the double bone pork chop. It looked really good on the outside, but when we cut into it, it was pretty much raw. We told the waitress and they comp us on it, but since we were in a hurry, we got it boxed for us as we requested. I’m still on the fence on rating this as a fine dining experience. Overall, it was a good experience & maybe they were overwhelmed during such a busy time.

Yelp
A not to be missed place every time we travel to Holland, MI. We've been dining there since their first year of operation. Everything about Butch's...from the welcome as you enter; the impeccable service; the casual upscale ambience; or the delicious, fresh and innovative food presented beautifully on the plate...resonates with quality and passion. This night's experience was no exception! Bravo, Butch's Dry Dock! Highly recommend! (see pics and descriptions below)

Yelp
Great place, nice atmosphere and good quality food. The wine list is no joke and they have a full bar. Service was perfect and no rush.

Yelp
super accommodating to fit in a couple of extra people! we went down to the speakeasy (shhh) while waiting for our table. the drinks were amazing! the bartender was very friendly and informative. he helped us choose our drinks and was spot on! the good was fairly good. not the best steak that i've had but i enjoyed how it was prepared.

Yelp
We came for our one year anniversary dinner and put that on the reservation, but didn't get any acknowledgment or congratulations. We didn't expect any but the reservation asked what we were celebrating l, so I don't see the point of asking to begin with if it's not acknowledged. Food was good, but not stellar. The staff almost seemed "put off" or "stand off" when greeting us and serving us, but maybe that's part of their attitude here. None seemed super happy to be there or working or serving us. That's okay because we came for the food that was good. My scallops were super tasty, but for nearly $40 I was shocked I didn't get 3 of them, but rather only 2. My wife liked her dish but had a minuscule amount of rice that we thought tasted stale. She loved her fish though. We both loved the cauliflower appetizer. Nice ambiance. Low key but upscale

Yelp
Stopped in for dinner on Saturday night. Nice ambiance. The back of the restaurant, along with the bar, is casual. The front section of the restaurant is more formal. I'm a back door, bar kind of guy. That's the way I roll. Ordered the hangar steak. Delicious. Cooked to perfection and seasoned just right. The Four Roses Old Fashioned started off the evening. A big rock and a luxardo cherry and I'm good to go. Anyway, dinner was outstanding. The burroto chicken was also delicious. Service was great too. Can't wait to return.

Yelp
Butch's Dry Dock is located in the downtown area of Holland. The inside of the restaurant is tastefully done, the bar is small but nice, and there's a nice outside area for when the weather is nicer than it was on our visit lol. Our server was friendly and attentive. And she did a great job explaining the preparation of the dishes we asked about. My tequila old fashioned was quite good as was my wife's negroni. I had the octopus app, which was quite good. The grilled lemon was a nice touch. My burrata chicken was good, but I thought it was just a bit underseasoned. My wife has the gnocchi and scallops. It would've been nice to see 3 scallops instead of just 2, and she said it could've been a bit hotter. This was our second time at Butch's, and I expect we'll be back again.

Yelp
What a great dining experience! If you enjoy walking among the wines to make your selection for dinner, this is your place! We were blessed to have Butch himself come to help us with our wine selection. Food: I really loved everything I had. The truffle cauliflower was cooked to a perfect, salty al dente, my chili fish had excellent flavor, my boyfriend's pork chop with its mushroom marsala was really tasty, and I loved the salted caramel gelato with the shortbread cookie to top it all off. Overall, this romantic place is perfect for a date night. Not too loud when the restaurant is full, which is a great way to have an intimate evening. I will be back!!

Marie J.

Yelp
Service was on point, the food even better, and the updated menu didn't disappoint. The New Zealand Rack of Lamb was cooked to perfection, and the filet was incredibly tender and spot-on. The wine, as always, was excellent. Bonus points to the sommelier who took the time to help my mom discover a new favorite. Even in the middle of the busy Tulip Festival, they never missed a beet. All in all, a fantastic night--delicious food, great wine, and relaxed, welcoming vibes.

Yelp
This place is amazing! They were able to accommodate our party of 12 for a bachelorette party dinner. The waitress was very attentive, the drinks and appetizers arrived quickly. The food was outstanding, many of us ordered the hanger steak and the shrimp spaghetti. Everyone loved the food!
google avatar

Casey V.

Yelp
Overrated. Go somewhere when's where you don't feel your being robbed. I had a Parmesan curlett with 2 sprigs of broccoli for 35$. They could've put the chicken in rice or pilaf. Very bland.
google avatar

Sherri G.

Yelp
The food is amazing! Our server was amazing and helped us find the perfect dishes for our party and they were able to accommodate a gluten-free diet quite easily. She also helped us pair our dishes with wine and every recommendation she made was delicious. So let's talk about the food! The scallop appetizer melts in your mouth, the trout was cooked to perfection, and I didn't know you could make cheesecake so fluffy and delicious. My husband had the Caesar salad (so flavorful!), the parmesan chicken which he loved, and the chocolate gelato. We've been looking for gelato like we had in Italy for over 6 years and this is it! The portions are a bit small, but that is pretty normal for this kind of dining experience, yet we left full and very happy.

Christi H.

Yelp
Honestly the cost of food I would not come back. The steak was lacking in flavor along with none of the food hot. Portions very small. $16 for black and blue dip that was probably 5 tablespoons worth: don't get me wrong I'm all for paying for a quality meal but this was not it.

Yelp
The ambiance is great, the space is beautiful, the service is fantastic, and the wine menu is impressive for this part of the country. However, the food is average, at best. I have dined here twice and both times was shocked at both the lack of skill in preparation of the dishes and the elementary level of thought that was put into the creation of the dishes. This a beautiful, elegant, and pleasant place to dine but the food is actually laughable.

Yelp
It's an odd restaurant. The front half feels a bit more upscale, the back half not so much. We weren't even greeted when we approached the host desk. Service was impersonal at best. The Vegetable MEZZE was a total joke for $16. Including 2 tiny strips of peppers and 2 pieces of dry pita, a few olives, beets and unappetizing goat cheese. GARLIC FRITES were tasty. The Shrimp Spaghetti was OK but it had a fishy odor that was a bit of a turnoff. The Parmesan Crusted Chicken was underwhelming, oddly plated with too much unprepared spinach and 2 raw tomatoes slices. Extensive wine list. All in all not worth the $ in my opinion.

Jennifer B.

Yelp
The steaks were cooked perfectly and the Demi glacé was amazing. Service was spot on from the bartender to the server. The tables are very private and roomy.

Melissa C.

Yelp
Disappointed. The food was mediocre, it was not salted or seasoned at all. The wine was the best part but everything was over priced for what you get. The bathroom is just one room and I had to wait in line, it was dirty when I finally did get in. Not really worth the price.

Lily P.

Yelp
Always a great experience, best steak in Holland and "fine dining" experience even though you can come as you are. Ask about the speakeasy too

Yelp
I visited which is dry dock for the first time to celebrate my dad's birthday. He picked the restaurant based on Yelp in the picture of the hanger steak. We made reservations for 4:30 which thankfully we were made aware that only appetizers salads soups and drinks are available at that time. The full menu is available 5:00 p.m. and after. We arrived we were immediately seated in the bar area promptly greeted by our server and started our meal with tea. We ordered garlic frites which came with tarragon aioli. Dad had never had aioli previously and ate all of it with his fries he liked it so much! For our meals we had hanger steak (of course) and shrimp pasta. The hanger steak was cooked perfectly and very juicy. The shrimp pasta came with quite a few shrimp and big pieces of artichoke heart. Definitely two hearty meals for the price! For dessert we had raspberry cream pudding type of thing. It was just enough sweet to finish the meal properly! And since it was dad's birthday they even comped that for us. Very kind of them. Being seated in the bar area the ambience was relaxed but very proper and that sound level was low to moderate which I thought was great! Considering it was the bar area I was expecting it to be loud and it absolutely was not - no problem having a regular conversation at normal volume. I would recommend and return for another special event.

Yelp
I love Butches Dry dock. Great food, great wine selection, and a really great ambience. Butches is a very romantic place to take a date. My wife and I love it there.

Yelp
I made a reservation a month in advance because I wanted to have a nice dinner out while in town for the weekend. When we arrived to check-in for our reservation, it was clear there were two very different experiences in the same restaurant. In the front there were white tablecloths and nice piano music playing as well dressed diners enjoyed their meals. I'm the back were metal tables in the bar area with with loud conversation dominating the room although it was not that full. I asked the hostess who seated us if we could sit in the front of the restaurant instead, no table available we were told. The food was good, but the ambiance was disappointing, especially because for the same price we could have been in the front part of the restaurant! The service was acceptable. There is a small unisex bathroom that should be better in an upscale restaurant.

Yelp
Haven't been to Butch's in several years, mostly because the menu has been uninspiring. But last night, we met friends from out of town, and we could get a rez, so that was important (as it was during Tulip Time). My husband and I were greeted and lead to a tiny table, set for 2, even though our rez was for 4. I politely asked for a table for 4 and all that was available was a dark space, near the door with a cold metal top, horrible. At least it was a big enough table for 4. We ordered the sourdough starter, as we have been craving good sourdough and apparently this was from Chicago. It was just ok. Then, we ordered the Parmesan-crusted chicken topped with burrata and served with asparagus. The bottom of the plate was swimming in a cold, milky liquid that completely obliterated any chance for the Parmesan crust to maintain any texture or flavor. The chicken was bland and covered with wet glop. The asparagus was overcooked, lost its texture, was on the verge of slimy, and the only discernable flavor was sulfur. The waitress said that this dish was one of her 3 fav's on the menu, so I was hopeful. But, she did not come back to the table in time to check on how we were doing, so I ate it anyway. Once again, I am disappointed dining in downtown Holland, especially considering the price tag that came with the meal. Save your money. buy a great steak from The Bearded Dutchman Butcher, and stay home, the parking will be much easier, as well.

Yelp
The food was great! We loved the bread course and the garlic fries were cooked perfectly, and so flavorful. The hanger steak was amazing and a perfect medium rare just as requested. The ambiance is warm and inviting. The only opportunity for improvement, if I had to make one, is the service was quite slow. It did take a bit, nearly 20 minutes, to receive our drinks. It was still a really good experience out with friends! Oh, and the crème brûlée was silky and delicious!
google avatar

Jenny Z.

Yelp
Had a lovely work dinner here in the private room downstairs. It was a coursed menu but all of the items on the night's special menu were also on the regular menu. I loved everything we ordered. Started with garlic frites, olives and cheese, and the truffle cauliflower. The cauliflower was my favorite! So perfectly cooked and anything with that truffle oil is just divine. For my main meal I ordered the seared striped seabass. It was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. So much flavor in the skin. The beet purée and espresso balsamic reduction paired complemented the fish very well. For dessert I ordered the crème brûlée which had excellent flavor. The texture was on the liquid-y side which was a little unexpected and not my preference but taste was still good. We had a sommelier suggest two really nice bottles, a French pinot noir and then also a French merlot/cab franc blend. The m43 New England IPA was from Michigan so also got to try that before all the wine. Really easy to drink NEIPA. Food and drink were all great... would definitely recommend this white tablecloth cozy dinner spot to anyone in the Holland / Grand Rapids area.

Yelp
Fortuitously, we ended up sitting at the bar for our dinner to avoid the 1.5 h wait for a table. We loved the bartender! We started with a Caesar salad with anchovies (holy moly - the anchovies are salty - be warned!). We shared the lamb two ways and the ribeye. Both tasty and cooked to perfection. My husband and I have differing opinions on which formulation is better (I preferred the one on the T bone). Only criticism is the ribeye should probably be a bit thicker, though they make up for this with the perfectly paired shishito pepper salsa. We had the fresh made madelines, which just hits the spot! Overall would recommend if you're in the Holland area. Would advise trying to make a reservation ahead of time to avoid the long wait.

Todd A.

Yelp
Great service, menu and staff. Perhaps THE BEST fries I have ever had! Enjoy a nice walk downtown after your meal.

Steve K.

Yelp
Much disappointment! We had 5 couples traveling to Holland just sharing an evening together. Our waitress was inattentive, waiting to clear plates, getting drinks timely, but more importantly lacking an engaging personality, her loss of course! Of the 5 friends adjacent to me, none had a favorable response to their meals, flank steak over cooked with minimal flavor as was the pork chop. My premium lobster tail was decent but the vegetable medley and rice was excellent!
google avatar

Paula B.

Yelp
Make sure to grab a reservation on open table ahead of time, especially during tulip season! We had an amazing time. Must try the truffle cauliflower, hanger steak, and seared scallops.
google avatar

Yelp
We have been visiting the west side of Michigan for years. Finding restaurants that offer an interesting selection of food and wine, is something we enjoy doing. Butch's Dry Dock did not disappoint. They offer wine at retail prices and for a $10 corking fee you can pick your wine . We had cocktails in the bar prior to our 7pm reservation. During cocktails the owner Butch introduced himself. We had patio seating which was quite nice. Mariah was our server and she was friendly and knowledgeable. Our party of 7 had salads and entrees. The watermelon/ feta salad was wonderful! The Basil pasta was tasty, the scallops were large and cooked well. Two people ordered the pork chop and were allowed to substitute the sides for the steak sides. If we could give half stars they would earn 4.5 stars.

Alyssa D.

Yelp
My husband and I went here for our anniversary. We made reservations and were seated on time. Sat on the patio. Service was good. We started with drinks and the crab dip. It was mediocre. The pita chips honesty outdid the dip. Our food was very good and presentation was excellent but portions were quite small. We left having could have ate more after an app and our meals. Which for the amount we paid is quite disappointing. We ended up going down the street somewhere else for dessert.. Overall it was good but not somewhere I'd go back. 3.5 stars.
google avatar

Jonathan V.

Yelp
Truly an excellent experience. While the food was amazing and the star, the combination of the service and atmosphere made the sum greater than any one of the components on its own.

Yelp
Super amazing ambience and food. One of the few fine dining places in Holland. I was surprised how the overall rating was not super high, and I wouldn't shy away from a place just based on that, but please take a moment to look at the pictures and perhaps drive by if you need to believe what I am about to say :) I loved all the pictures that were uploaded and not for a second regret coming to this beautiful place. Holland is one of those beautiful small towns which we had the opportunity to visit and absolutely loved it! While in town, we decided to try some flavorful restaurants and enjoy a nice meal. I am so glad I picked Dry Dock.. everyone there was absolutely welcoming and directed us to a very cozy table right away. The drinks and food were exquisite. I ordered the Mezcal Margarita and it was made to perfection. This was indeed one of the best mezcal drinks I have had in a long time (and I have tried quite a few). We got the pork belly for appetizers and it was dressed very well. I got the trout which had a nutty flavor and creamy beans.. super delicious! My husband got the tandoori chicken which was so fresh and tasty. Tandoori is an Indian dish and when I tasted it, it didn't seem that it had too much spices or overall hot, but instead you could tell that it was excellently marinated and was indeed so flavorful! If you love good food, great service and ready for an awesome night, this is the place to be in Downtown Holland! Absolute must!!!!

Yelp
Had never dined here before and thought celebrating a 30th birthday was the best occasion to try out Butch's, but we never got to try anything. We arrived at our reservation time (7:15) and was promptly seated at a wonderful table near the windows for our party of 2. The hostess told us to enjoy and that our server "Nicki" would be right with us. My husband and I sat at our table for almost 25 minutes and not a single person from the staff came over once to greet us or take even a drink order from us. We sat watching one server (assuming this was Nicki) attend to two tables (both couples) directly next to us the entire 25 minutes. She never once looked over in our direction. We were completely ignored and to be frank, it felt VERY intentional. The restaurant was completely empty besides us and the two other tables. Before it can be defended that the TWO small tables were too much for her to be able to provide us any service.... One of the tables had already finished their entrees and the other had already settled their bill. The server absolutely had time to serve us. It was a completely disappointing and frustrating way to celebrate a birthday. To top it off, as we were leaving the hostess (one of two of whom were present at the time of our check-in) thanked us for dining with them and to have a great night. Clearly no one was paying attention or cared enough about us as customers. We will NEVER be back or support this business or Taco Bar. No wonder there are rumors of this place looking to sell. Hopefully the next owner will have staff that cares about every single customer and realizes that their staff is literally preventing people from supporting this business and giving them money. Especially when people are coming in to celebrate special occasions and looking to spend more money than the average customer. Butch: you are better than this. Whoever you had serving your dining room on Thursday night (April 6) is doing your business a complete disservice and making a joke of your name. We used to hear amazing things about this place. Not anymore.
google avatar

Renee B.

Yelp
The food was very good but the kitchen was very slow. There was hardly anyone in the restaurant on a Saturday night. We got our drinks and appetizers in a timely manner. However we wanted over 1 hour to get our food AND 2 of our friends's food was cold. The waitress was lovely and tried to be helpful. Unfortunately, the poor planning of the kitchen ruined it for us.

Yelp
We came to celebrate my daughter's Hope College graduation and she chose Butch's-oh and we were meeting the boyfriend and his parents for the first time. Luckily we were able to get a reservation (good thing this mom plans in advance). Our meals and service were terrific, everyone enjoyed their dinner. My hanger steak was perfectly cooked, as were my husbands scallops. The Caesar with the black garlic dressing was SO good. Perfect restaurant for a special occasion.

J J.

Yelp
Butch's was ... fine. Nothing bad but nothing memorable. The portions (crab dip app and fish main meal) were extremely small for the price. One adult appetizer+salad+meal, two kids meals, two adult drinks set us back almost $150. I will say that dr my French 75 drink was delicious.

Yelp
Friday my wife and I had sometime before a Christmas party to grab some dinner. We arrived at 6pm without a reservation. We were greeted at the door by a very helpful hostess and once told we were looking for a table for two she quickly made work to prepare a spot for us. While waiting we were asked 2 additional times if we needed help and if someone could take our coats. We were excited with the first impression of excellent service and the overall vibe of the restaurant. It took several minutes for our server to check in and she quickly moved to taking a drink order. We place a very basic cocktail along with a request for a glass of wine. 15 plus minutes passed and another staff member stopped by the table to check on us as our server had disappeared. Drinks finally arrive and we proceeded to order dinner. 45 plus minutes passed before our soup and salad arrived and we feared they would arrive with our meal. The restaurant was maybe 60% full and we felt our Order was in before the dinner rush. My wife ordered the salmon and I ordered the seared scallops. The chef unfortunately missed the mark with my wife's fish. The hollandaise that accompanied the fish made the entire dish completely uneatable. We kindly expressed our concern to the waitress once she had checked in after I had completed my meal. I will give her credit she did have the dish removed from the bill without request. My wife and I have worked in the restaurant industry for many years prior and understand sometimes things just don't click. Was a tough and disappointing experience overall. The dinner took 2.5 hours and the meal was not as hoped.

Yelp
I cannot SPEAK for Butch's Dry Dock. It's EASY to find though if you're in Holland. When I walked in, it looked wonderful. Smelled wonderful. Next time I'm in town I'll have dinner here. But my five star rating goes to its basement. I've been to a few basements in my travels and this one really felt like a true basement. Everything about it was the epitome of what a basement should be. Do not change one thing about.

Yelp
We came here for dinner on a day trip to Holland from Saugutuck since it was highly recommended by multiple sources. Although the food was decent, it wasn't really anything to write home about. Luckily we were able to snag a reservation the day before through Open Table, so we didn't have to deal with the crazy wait times that some of the other reviews mentioned. There were 6 in our group, so I was able to try a few items. Appetizers: - Local Greens Salad - what you would expect, but bit pricey for the portion size. It came in a small bowl. The honey pomegranate vinaigrette was perfectly sweet and tart. - Truffle cauliflower - this was probably the most memorable part of the meal. it was fragrant and perfectly roasted. - cured meats platter - for some reason the prosciutto was all clumped up and made it hard to separate and share Main Dish: - Pork shank - meat was very tender, but could use a bit more flavor - Flank Steak - meat was flavorful, but a bit tough and overcooked for medium rare Dessert: - Chocolate Madelines - I've never had freshly made madelines before, so this was a real treat for me. It was still warm when it arrived at the table. - Creme Brulee - Decent, but nothing special. I would come here on a date night or a special occasion, but would not go out of my way or wait for a table here.

Yelp
My Husband and I went here to celebrate our Anniversary. Make sure to have a reservation because it does fill up on the weekend. The food was very delicious! Yes! It's tiny portions and you probably don't want to go too hungry! I had the Chicken thigh confit and I was very happy. Perfectly cooked and tasty. They make great drinks, honestly it's defiantly a date restaurant because it can be pricy. But with great food and great drinks, when in Rome WHY NOT!

Yelp
Our bed and breakfast recommended this place and the menu they had on hand sounded amazing. We stopped in Tuesday 5/1 and was disappointed to see the menu changed a lot. To a point where I was having a hard time finding something I would like. Turns out, it didn't matter. We sat for 13 minutes and nobody ever came over to us. We left.

Yelp
My husband and I came here right before restaurants closed for the second lockdown. Wow, what a good choice we made! The food is delish and the service is friendly and made our night very special. We had the ribs, the chicken, calamari (Yum Yum) and the bread. I do kind a wish their bread was softer but it was still good. Anyway, highly recommend!

Yelp
I've reviewed Butch's before, but I think visiting again warrants another review, to confirm that it's just as good the second time around. I will keep this one brief, because I have little to add. It was very, very tasty food. In a conversation with our server, I think we came to the root of why the food is so good: it's all locally sourced and prepared fresh. Even the bread on our sandwiches was from a local bakery. The flavors were crisp and strong, and most of all, clean. Erika got a grilled cheese and I got a reuben and we split plates. That has to be the best reuben in Holland, maybe even western Michigan. I think reubens are hard to nail down. Between juicy corned beef and coleslaw, reubens have a tendency to get soggy. Not here. It was fresh all the way through. The flavors only mix in your mouth, not before hand. It's an A+ version of one of the tougher sandwiches to nail. The grilled cheese was also fantastic. It carefully walked the line between gourmet and comfort food. The cheese was exceptionally high quality, and melted to perfection: gooey, but not greasy. The bread was crisp and singed by real butter, not cooking spray. All in all, it was another great meal. And despite Butch's being one of the most expensive restaurants in Holland, for lunch Erika and I walked out under $20. That's a steal. Go check out Butch's for lunch! And if you have the time and money to spend... treat yourself to dinner.

Yelp
We had a reservation for 7:15 on Saturday night. We were seated right away and had our drinks by 7:30 when we ordered dinner. About 15 minutes later, the server brought an appetizer, which we didn't order. We were with another couple and we each thought the other had ordered it, which we didn't. Then the server came back to the table and told us she brought it to the wrong table, picked it up and served it to another table. Then, we sat there until 8:38 when our dinners FINALLY came. Over an hour to wait! My food was lukewarm at best and the dressing on the salad that was on the plate was inedible. Very disappointing all the way around! I can't recommend Butch's.

Yelp
If you're looking for a great meal AND service in downtown Holland this should be considered. We live downtown Holland and Erin was our server tonight. Outstanding service and food. Can't go wrong.

Yelp
My wife and I attended a private dinner in a lower level room in the restaurant. The food was exquisite! The servers were very pleasant and knowledgeable about the food and drinks. When we asked one of them if they could give us the recipe for the incredibly delicious cauliflower appetizer they politely declined. Guess we'll have to come back again.

Yelp
The food was good but mine was cold when brought to the table. Our service was really good. We had a nice table. The hostesses should learn how to smile. It's really expensive for what you get. We asked for bread and four thin slices of bread were served for $3. No butter or oil. It was ok but I won't go back.

Yelp
My husband and I had a terrific late Valentine's dinner at Butch's! On 2/18/23. This was our fist time eating here even though we've lived in Holland for 4 years. We had an excellent server named Sutton who gave us great service. We had a 6:15 pm reservation, and we were seated immediately in the back dining room even though we arrived 15 minutes early. When I made the reservation we were able to specify the more casual back dining room which is near the bar. We were also able to chose a low table rather than a high-top. It had Very nice atmosphere and the same menu as the more formal looking front dining room. I had the shrimp spaghetti which was delicious! Just the right amount of spice and it was cooked to perfection. I loved the spinach, artichoke hearts and sun dried tomatoes in an exquisite sauce. Both our meals were generous portions. My husband enjoyed the pork tenderloin which I tasted also. It was tender and juicy with a delightful sauce on top. We also shared the Caesar salad which was delicious with a light citrusy dressing and plenty of Parmesan cheese. I enjoyed the house Pinot Noir and my husband had a great stout beer from a Williamsburg MI Brewery. The server told us there was a Somalia available if we wanted help picking out a good bottle of wine We also shared the chocolate torte with gelato dessert which was a perfect finish to an exceptional dinner! I highly recommend this restaurant if you want a very special dining experience with above average food and wonderful atmosphere.

Yelp
Butch's Dry Dock is for your fancier pallets. This 4.5 star restaurant has a very fancy vibe. The lights are low, the candles are lit, and it feels very romantic. I went here with my husband for an anniversary and felt like we spent a small fortune. Very expensive for small portions of food. Which is to be expected at restaurants like this. Overall, a 4 star rating. Good food., small portions. Left feeling hungry and out $100+
