Butter Block

I recently visited Butter Block Bakery in Buffalo and was very impressed. As vegetarians, we were pleased to find several baked-items that suited our diet (no meat fillings, etc). We tried the parmesan eggplant, Danish parmesan, caramelised onion Danish, Danish with coffee & matcha flavours, and a hazelnut croissant — all of them tasty. The apple éclairs (which had a prominent cinnamon note) were also good, though I felt the cinnamon was slightly stronger than I might have preferred. The ambience is pleasant, inviting and well kept. Staff behaviour was courteous and efficient. The overall quality of the bakery items was clearly above average. What We Liked • The flavour and craftsmanship of the pastries stood out: buttery, flaky croissants, well-balanced savoury Danishes, and clean presentation. • Adequate vegetarian-friendly options (important to us). • Good ambience and friendly staff made for a comfortable visit. • The hazelnut croissant was a highlight, with good texture and flavour. A Few Minor Notes • The apple éclair was very good, but the cinnamon flavour felt a little strong for my taste — if you prefer milder spice you might mention that. • As with many very good bakeries, there may be busy times and items might sell out; early arrival is advisable. • The price point reflects the premium nature of the bakery, so expect to pay somewhat more than in a basic bakery.

I visited Butter Block early on a weekend morning, hoping to find something delicious that didn’t involve meat. Right away I could tell the place is serious about craft — flaky dough, golden laminations, smells of butter and sugar in the air. The address: 426 Rhode Island St, Buffalo, NY. As a vegetarian looking for a high‑quality pastry experience, I’d give Butter Block 4.5 out of 5. If you just want something beautifully made, this bakery hits. If your diet is more restrictive (vegan, allergy‑heavy) you’ll still likely find something but with more caveats. I’d go again for sure, especially on a morning when I want a treat rather than a full meal. I picked up a few pastry items: the Classic Croissant (just plain butter croissant), the Almond Croissant, and a Pumpkin Croissant. According to their menu the classic is $4.50, almond $5.50, pumpkin $5.75. Finally end up with coffee& cinnamon tea The plain croissant was flawlessly made — rich but not overwhelming, good texture. The almond croissant had a nice sweetness without being heavy. The pumpkin one was seasonal and fun, though richer than I’d choose every day. Atmosphere: small, focused bakery rather than a full café brunch place. Good for grabbing pastries and maybe a drink, less so for lingering a long time. Hours are limited: Wednesday through Sunday, 8 am to ~1‑2 pm.

i tried the maple bacon bow tie and the chocolate eclair. the bow tie was amazing!! buttery, fluffy, crunchy, a little sweet from the glaze and way more filling than i expected. the eclair wasn’t my favorite though; it had this faint onion taste that threw it off. the shop itself smelled like onions mixed with fresh baked goods (which was kinda unexpected.) the staff was super helpful, especially with how busy and fast paced it was at the bakery plus the service was really quick for a packed sunday morning. the bakery is clean and cute, just on the smaller side. that maple bacon bow tie honestly changed my life, and i’ll definitely be back for more! a lot of people recommended this spot to me and i’d recommend it too.

We arrived not long before closing time. Understandably, there were few items left in the case. I shared that we had traveled from out-of-state to visit on our way to another destination. The staff quietly went and checked on orders and came back with a box which had been incorrectly packed for that day instead of the following day. They offered to let me purchase the contents. I was thrilled. It contained two of the pretzel croissants which I would highly recommend! We also had purchased a macaroon (if you love coconut-you will love this one), an oatmeal cookie (chewy and delicious), and another item. All so worth the stop and so impressed by their kindness.

Butter Block has been my favorite bakery since moving to Buffalo and living in the Five Points neighborhood. I knew they would be the ones to make our wedding cake before my husband and I were even engaged. Micaela, who I worked with entirely over email, was incredibly helpful, and Butter Block translated everything I described into the best-tasting cake we have ever eaten. I will always recommend Butter Block and am so happy we chose them to bring our wedding cake vision to life. We also ordered two dozen "his" and "hers" pastries (maple bacon bowties and hazelnut croissants) and not a single one lasted more than an hour into our reception. Run, don’t walk, to Butter Block.

On a work trip from Syracuse to Buffalo and we were told we had to stop here. Truly so glad we did. Some of the best pastries ever. I bought one, ate it, then turned around to buy a box to bring home. Please open a second location in Syracuse please!!! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

What a bakery! Absolutely top of the class — elegant, classy, and full of delightful treats. Every bite reflects quality and passion. A must-try spot — I’m sure you’ll become a fan after just one visit!

As a European, I have loved this place for ten years because it felt like home! But something has changed. The croissants are smaller, and I don't think they're using imported butter anymore. I hope I have just been experiencing some off days but if these changed have occurred, I hope they're reversed. I am confident BB customers would gladly pay more for the quality. I know tariffs have hurt us all, so I am hoping this is temporary. Rooting for BB and missing what once was! Staff is always great. Still thankful.

Where do I begin? I mean... if you like breakfast items, just go here. The croissants are flaky and melt in your mouth. The morning buns have a delicious amount of sugar coating the exterior, and every bite has a soft crunch of pure love. The homemade pop tarts are made with seasonal ingredients, so you're always getting something fresh and homemade. In the summer when I stop by their booth at the farmers market, I always buy treats to last us the whole weekend. Heads up, you should totally expect to wait in line when you arrive... I promise it's worth it!

A well deserved 5 stars. A review from a Canadian here. For my Torontonians, if you love Nadege almond croissants, then you'll love the ones from Butter Block even more. Conveniently located just 7 mins away from the Peace Bridge boarder, I've had my eyes on Butter Block for a long time. We arrived on a Friday morning and they were well stocked. I decided to get the following: Almond croissant Morning bun Chocolate chip cookie Bread pudding Smores poptart Everything was BOMB. I think my favourite thing was the morning bun. Almond croissants- sooo buttery and without that artificial almond paste taste. Almond paste filling was light and well distributed. One of the best almond croissants I've ever had. And I've had a lot! Morning bun - Think a cronut meets a cinnamon bun. The pastry was so soft and buttery but it also had that cinnamon sugar in between. It's a delicious pastry. S'mores Poptart -Ok I keep calling this a s'mores poptart and I'm not 100% sure this is what it is. Either way, it was still good lol. Their pastry is just so buttery and flakey. The real poptart could nevvver. Not too sweet at all. I assume the filling was supposed to be the chocolate part of the s'mores but again it wasn't really giving me that flavour. Chocolate chip cookie - this was perfect except for all the flakey salt on top. That's just personal preference. I don't like my chocolate chip cookies topped with salt. Aside from that, it was the perfect texture and tasted even better when warmed up. Bread pudding - this thing was like 2 pounds lol. It was sooo heavy but sooo delicious. It's literally bread pudding in a muffin form. It was so moist even 2 days later, when I devoured the rest of it. Customer service was fast and friendly. There are a few seats inside and I love that they offer complimentary lemon water. Butter Block has made it to the list of must visits whenever I cross the boarder!

Delicious and well crafted bakery items. Real butter definitely. Staff were funny. Beautiful inside. We got there around 11 and items were running low. Go early to make sure you can see the whole selection. The two pastries we got, napoleon and macaroon, were delightful.

Great little bakery however, you better get there early because that sell out fast. I especially like their pies. Counter service is great. Nice old building next to our favorite nursery.

I absolutely LOVE Butter Block! It has been my go to pastry shop ever since I discovered it. This day I got the morning bun, savory danish, almond croissant and the matcha. The morning bun is a MUST try. One of my favorite items ever. Has a hint of cinnamon and a perfectly flaky exterior and soft on the inside. Their croissants are also all amazing. The almond filling is so nice! They have seasonal flavors for their pastries that they update pretty frequently. The savory danish this time was onion and Gruyère and WOW. The onion was perfectly caramelized and the pastry had an amazing texture. If you're in this area, I definitely recommend the trip to this bakery. It's a cute spot and pastries are amazing! Only sad they're not open every day of the week. I recommend going earlier in the day and not closer to the closing time. Every time I've gone closer to closing time I've missed out on a couple pastries I want since they run out of a lot of items towards the end of the day.

The pastries looked absolutely divine when looking online so I knew I had to stop by during my quick trip to Buffalo - and I'm so glad I did. I tried to cut into the butter croissant with the wooden knives they have, but it was so delicate that it was impossible to cut through to see the honeycomb structure. It was delightfully crumbly and deliciously buttery. We also got the cacio e pepe roll to try, per one of the staff's recommendations as it was her favorite savory item. It had a beautiful blend of flavors and we can't wait to come back for more!

My fiance and I are kicking ourselves for not finding this place sooner! What a treasure! Their variety of pastrie/s, friendly staff, and cosy, but likely atmosphere make it a must visit! We absolutely loved the Bacon Bowties and the Hazelnut Crescent! We will come again for more! I could give this place 10 stars if I could! They knock it out of the park!

Butterblock is one of my go-to bakeries/patisseries in Buffalo! Everything they offer is high quality and exceptional! The croissants and Kouign Amman are the best I've had in the area! They offer individual desserts, whole desserts and quiche. You can order ahead on their website or stop into the bakery. There's limited seating inside...a handful of tables. I'd get there early though to ensure you get what you desire. I've yet to try the coffee or lattes from here as I'm ultra focused on the main attraction! One day though! In the Spring and Summer, they have a stand at the Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market. Again, arrive early there too for the best selection. If you haven't yet tried Butterblock you're definitely missing out! Make it a priority to get there asap and often!!!

I apologize for this being the first time I'm reviewing this WONDERFUL Bakery & Patisserie. I've been coming here for well over a year!! Their Peanut butter cookies are my reason for always returning on a regular basis. That being said, there are SO MANY other reasons to frequent this place!! The staff is awesome. They are polite, patient and knowledgeable. I give 5 stars a lot. I'd easily give this place a 6th star. They are experts at what they do. Pictures don't do justice to just how good all of their creations are. Just go to Rhode Island St and try. Get there early to have there full selection to choose from. Check out their website to reserve stuff ahead of time. Other family favs from here are their croissants, bacon bow ties, bread pudding, and the pop tarts.

Beautiful store with the most incredible pastries. The fruit pop-tarts may just be the best thing I've ever put in my mouth. Please Butter Block, never go away!

Trendy, upscale, sophication best describes this very popular French style patisserie. The interior is crisp, bright and welcoming. We've never come here without there being a line, but it moves fairly quick. They run out of popular items, so ordering ahead is recommended. The creations include a variety of filled and plain croissants that are a must try! They rotate the case with a variety of specialty chilled delectables, pop tarts, brownies, pies, scones etc. This is not your typical bakery variety. This is CIA level and I wouldn't be surprised if that is where they studied. Many trips to France were taken by these master pastry chefs!!

Very quaint spot. Some of the best croissants I have ever had. Wish I had grown up on their poptarts vs. Kelloggs, for sure! Advice order ahead! They stay busy and packed!

Wowowzaaaa so so so good. Best bakery in WNY! I love love love everything I bought. I got here right when they opened at 8am. I thought I'd be first but there was already 5 people in front of me. I ordered basically a little bit of everything. The carrot cheesecake, meringue lemon tart, hazelnut croissant, pretzel croissant, cheese carmelized onion danish, sweet danish and eclair. I tried a little bit of everything and it was sooooo good. The carmelized onion cheese danish was my absolute favorite. It was still so crispy after a 15 min ride home. I can't wait to see what else they create. There was also some table for seating as well.

A friend recommended stopping here for delicious pastries, and apparently so did many other friends as this place was packed! The line moved quickly and the service was friendly. We got the savory danish, chocolate croissant, and blueberry pistachio pop-tart. These pasties are not to be missed and were devoured instantly! It's a cute shop front, but we weren't able to enough since it was such a busy morning.

I've been hearing a lot about this bakery & seeing their IG posts. I know the lines can get long, so I came early on a Friday morning. They were still adding things to the case! We tried a bunch of things & still didn't try everything that looked good. Each of these things were really delicious. *Lemon sugar cookie *Lemon poppy seed eclair *Kouign amman Pretzel croissant Onion gruyere danish Oreo Pop tarts (coconut lime, chocolate banana, snickers) *My favorites! I am a sucker for a lightly sweet, crispety-chewy edged & soft centered cookie, so this lemon sugar cookie was my thing. I will always get a kouign amman & a plain-ish or savory criossant. The onion gruyere danish was so yummy & criossant flaky. The lemon poppyseed eclair was fantastic; filled generously with lemony pastry cream, tender shell. They always have a rotating number of fun pop tart flavors. This is the best bakery in the area. I'll definitely be back!

My god I've deprived myself of this goodness for far too long. This place is amazing! Everything I've tried here has been awesome and we've been 3x in a month since I discovered it! Their caramelized onion pastries change lives I wish I had bought 10 of them to enjoy all week long. They have a constantly rotating selection of baked goods and things to try so there's always something new. We love this place and the staff and prices are great! Street parking only all around the 5 points neighborhood so you may need to walk a bit. The interior isn't the biggest place but there are some tables if you want to enjoy something there. Highly highly highly recommend this place and can't wait to visit again!

Unfortunately, I think we got there at the wrong time. We arrived about a half hour before closing and they really had nothing left other than some brioche bombs, which weren't anything special. Basically glorified coffee cakes. We were hoping for gourmet pop tarts that they do, but sadly since we don't live in the area, we were not able to go back during our visit.

The best croissant on the east coast!!! You can see the baking happening in the back which is pretty cool.

A food tour guide recommended this spot. The focus is on French pastries. They are rich and buttery. I enjoyed a croissant that was flaky and took back an almond treat. The line was short when I arrived on a Wednesday morning but a good queue started as I left.

can't believe i haven't reviewed this place yet because i think of coming here EVERY weekend and probably end up doing so 10% of the time because i don't have unlimited money. the bakery always smells AMAZING. but the desserts do get quite pricey depending on what you get but you can also find pretty affordable (still tasty) items. they offer a good selection that is much narrowed down as the day goes by. it's hard to say a time though because i've been there at 12pm with full shelves & 10am with almost nothing left. they switch around flavors and types of dessert so you never get bored :) there is limited indoor seating but i found that you can usually get a seat with a quick wait if unlucky.

Love love their chocolate croissants. The decor is displayed beautifully. Quick service with friendly staff. Excited to be coming back for more goods later.

Some of the most fantastic baked goods that I've ever had the pleasure to experience. They aren't cheap, but this is one of those situations where you truly get what you pay for. Just exceptional!

Not much of a coffee drinker but had a cup this morning and needed something sweet to accompany it and did I find it. I wanna say I've had one of the best croissants known to man . The croissant had a sugary glaze over it but didn't compromise the softness of it . Plenty of desserts to choose from so treat yourself definitely a must try.

20 minutes to drive there, 20 minutes to drive home...and I still smell like freshly baked pastry. I'd be speechless but I'm too busy drooling and clamoring for the first bite of the brioche bomb... To be honest, I'm a suburbanite. The older I've gotten, the more frequently I visit the city, but it's mostly for work or an appointment. Now that I know about Butter Block (bb for short), I'm afraid I'll be spending much more time in the city. Painted a soft, buttery yellow, the outside of the building reminds me of any shop you might see on Main St in Williamsville or East Aurora. Step inside and it takes your away. The first thing you see is the barista swiftly and deftly slinging shots of espresso for Americanos, Lattes, and any other high-test beverage you could want (I ordered a Cortado). Then you see the bench seat that spans the entire right side of the cafe. Intimate spaces for two to sit, chat, and devour the deliciousness of the wares being churned out of the kitchen. There's a large case for pastries and a cold case for tarts and other delicacies. A doorway I will assume was the restroom is discreetly tucked away to the right just before you get to the glass windows of the kitchen. Half a dozen people all working feverishly to prepare, decorate, and/or plate-up completed treats... it's truly a sight to see. I have to stop typing now because I need to not-so-delicately put my face back into this brioche bomb, with brown butter streusel and a combination of vanilla pastry cream and lemon curd... nom, nom, nom...

Went here because it was highly recommended, called to make sure they were opened and was told they were baking for the next day meaning today, well went today and to begin with the steps to go in are so high that even my husband who is 6'5 said they were extremely high, then they only had 4 croissants, no muffins and only a couple of other items still very Christmas flavors. I don't recommend it and will definitely not go back. By the way the young woman behind the counter was not nice, it looked like she was mad she had to work.

This place knows what they're doing when it comes to pastries. I sampled a variety of different things here and couldn't find anything I didn't absolutely love. Some things are seasonal, but their maple bacon croissant changed my life

Scrumptious pastries to die for @butterblockbuffalo in Elmwood village in Buffalo NY. In-house bakery at the back. Lovely cappuccino too! Limited seating space inside and gets busy but definitely worth the wait. Plenty of seating in the area outside. The coconut croissant and the hazelnut croissant were unique and divine!

The Scarlet Vetter says.....Ok. I must start by saying I am not a dessert person......not generally a fan of sweets. I am a savory girl all the way. BUT. This was by far the best cake I have ever tasted in my life. Rich chocolate, but light and airy. Crunch with creme. Flavor bursts. Chocolate Mousse Cake. Get it. You will not regret it.

I dream of these croissants and pastries. You know you're getting close when you smell the buttery goodness in the air. The best flaky croissants I have ever had located in a very unassuming part of west side Buffalo. They are delicious even days later. I have only done pick up but their website appears user friendly to reserve in advance. Guests are lining up even 30 minutes before opening. Lines do move relatively quickly. Butter Block is also a staple at the Elmwood weekend farmers markets. Their coffee is average so would get caffeinated elsewhere. Shop itself has one corner seating in the front for 2 small parties; overall is more of a to-go place. Easy street parking. Try everything, you can't go wrong! Keep it up, Butter Block!

The pastries from Butter Block are fantastic! They have a large variety to choose from savoury to sweet and chocolate to cheesy. The drinks are always amazing and I highly recommend their chai and matcha lattes. It has the cutest small coffee shop atmosphere with very limited seating but the very nice staff gets you through the line efficiently and if you snag a seat it's nice to sit and chat or take your goodies outside when the weather cooperates.

Never disappoints! The service is always quick even if there's a line of people. A great selection of items from sweet to savory. I also love that the walls are glass and you can see into the bakery.

The Morning Bun was delicious it was like a cinnamon toast crunch covered croissant. Chocolate croissant was also delicious. The bakery has a nice seating area but very little accommodations for those eating in: no plates/tableware (we ate off of napkins), there is no public wifi, and dogs are not allowed

I can't not purchase like 8 items when I come here. Their eclairs are not my fave and the pop tarts are hit or miss. but their mini desserts/patisseries and anything with their croissant dough is awesome.

High quality pastries, coffee, espresso drinks and tea. Their selections change so if you are a regular user, it makes it a bit fun to be surprised by what they're offering for the day. The treats have international ties (many French) as well as unconventional flavors, which is fun to dabble in all the way from buffalo. They also respect/value their staff resting by closing during holidays which I think is amazing! Well deserved.

This place has some delicious pastries. Considering that this bakery is the Pinnacle of gentrification within the neighborhood, the prices and the types of high end luxury cars driving in match that. Either way, their products are delicious! Their Polish rum cake was some of the best we've had, though on the pricier side. I'm looking forward to getting their other pastries too!

We are visiting the area after being in Canada, and are very happy to have found this little gem. We had latte, americano, matcha, and iced mocha all were absolutely delicious. The pastries were fresh and so very tasty. My favorite was the almond croissant! Definitely worth coming in. A little pricey, but worth it for fresh and delicious.

My friend and I was really craving for good croissant after our trip to Iceland. We came upon this place when she sent me an article from a while ago that used to be in five point bakery so I did some research and found this location. We went right after work and waited for it to open at 8am. The place was cozy and it had indoor seatings. When we saw the croissant, we could not wait to order and try them. I ended up getting 6 croissant. I tried the coffee, regular, chocolate, hazelnut(2), and the morning bun. They were so good esp the coffee. I gave it a small heat up and the way the coffee melts out of the croissant, makes my heart melt. The flavor of the coffee was delicious. The regular one was nice and buttery. The hazelnut was good but wasn't the best. The morning bun, loved it but yet again I like anything cinnamon to begin with. The chocolate one was on point esp after giving it a little warm up! Cannot wait to go back again!

I crave the eclairs and bacon twist croissant at Butter Block. Its super cute inside and the people ringing up your order are always kind and helpful. Its always a good day when you visit Butter Block.

Great baked goods! I enjoy popping in when I can to get something. They are the only place around that has certain things, which is a major plus in my book. Recommendation - if you know you want some things, pre-order! You save a bit a money and you're guaranteed your products. It's a great system and wonderful to have a half dozen baked goods for the week.

I love Butterblock and was their biggest fan when they first opened but I've noticed lately that quality and flavors are not the same as they used to be. My favorite almond croissant used to be rich and buttery with delicious almond filling. Now it's dry, fake buttery and barely any filling ;-( I hope they can go back to how it was when they first opened.

I got almond croissants to bring home for a gathering and they are simply to die for! I am positively addicted. I might try other things if I can get past this... Excellent bakery; friendly and helpful workers. It's also easy to get there. I'll definitely be back.

This is a great bakery. There is a wonderful variety in baked goods--multiple kinds of croissants, pop tarts, 5 different kinds of cookies--the molasses was so soft and chewy--different danishes (sweet and savory), eclairs, so so much more. We particularly enjoyed the unique cacio e pepe danish and hazelnut croissant--so flaky and full of flavor. The seating is limited and we took our pastries to go, but the line wrapped in front of the display case, in front of the seating, then out the door. So to get to seats you have to break through the line if you are lucky enough to find a seat. Pricing was good--we got a big box of pastries and cookies, expected it to be much more than the $40 we paid.

Another unexpected, amazing find in Buffalo! Who knew Buffalo would be home to some of the best freaking French pastries in New York?! Seriously!! A friend introduced us to Butter Block as she brought us some croissants for breakfast. Because it was really good we decided to come to the shop the next morning before we hit the road back home. And boy were we glad we did because it was buttery pastry heaven! Everything was absolutely divine! Definitely a must stop for anyone visiting Buffalo!!

As a tribute,honor, and memory of my moms love for local area bakeries...stopped in recently to check out her discovery, that even though she wasn't there with me, her spirit was happy and with me. The bakery located on the West Side of Buffalo, reminded me of a little European speciality shop in the movies. Staff were extremely friendly, you could watch them bake as you waited, the smaller selection was perfect. The selection ranged from their version of pop tarts,( every kids favorite), three different kind of crossients, coffee drinks, cookies to name a few. Since my mom &I loved crossients and almond flavor, purchased one along with a lemon sugar cookie.The taste was light, decadent, for the cookie and crossient perfect ratio of sift and sweetness.
