On the Grid : Chur Burger

"Chur" - Kiwi (or New Zealander) slang, used as either a congratulatory remark or in place of 'thank you'. Use in context: "That was choice ey bro," Allan stated. "Chur," John replied. Enter Chur Burger. 'Really? Another burger joint?' I hear you scoff, but scoff not. This is no regular, run-of-the-mill burger 'joint'. Chur burger is an experience, some have called it a way of life. Once you've sampled the Chicken burger with it's mayo and slaw, or the Lamb with feta and mint sauce - you too will be a convertee to the Chur. Don't waste any more time, jog there right now if you have to." - For the People

Delicious fried chicken and other fried accompaniments. Chicken is tender, moist and flavourful with a crispy batter. Fries are similarly soft and moist inside, crunchy outside - some of the nicest thin cut fries I’ve had. Fried chicken doughnut comes with a healthy dose of real maple syrup. Highly recommended - Butter may very well take the crown of best fried chicken in the area until Joy KFC reopens.

What an amazing experience. Upon entry, we were greeted by a happy and excited young French man who was all too keen to assist and make sure we were taken care of. I scanned the QR code to order and he said don’t worry about that. I’m here to look after you. He sure did. Kept checking in to see if all is ok, if we wanted extra sauce etc. legend. The fried chicken and donut hit every emotion and taste bud. The donut was a warm pillow, soft, sweet, and delicious, with crispy, yet juicy fried chicken atop. Complemented with a drizzle of maple. This was a match made in heaven. What a combo. 10/10. Chicken tenders were well portioned and equally crispy, flavourful and juicy. 10/10. Last but not least was the OG burger and fries. Again, well portioned, crispy, juicy well seasoned chicken thigh. Buns weren’t too big or thick and the cheese with the sauce was on point. Fries were perfectly cooked and seasoned. 10/10. We loved everything about butter Sydney and can’t wait to come back for more. Nice atmosphere and music. Thank you for a 10/10 experience.

This restaurant is perfect if you have a craving for fried chicken. The atmosphere is fun, the tunes even if overly loud are a mixture of old and new hip hop but you expect this before you go. We had the chicken wings, which are large so I would suggest just getting 2 unless you plan on sharing. We also had the Cheezus Burger which was tasty even if there isn’t much in it, but it doesn’t need it. Both come with fries, and damn good ones at that. They did stuff up our order and as an apology they gave us a donut which was very nice of them. The donut was fabulous and well worth getting. I think they are reasonably priced and serving are quite large.

We were super excited to try butter recently! We ordered a few different things off the menu and everything was really really good! Little place with a really cool vibe, only thing I could pick on was the music was a little too loud and we couldn’t really talk but that’s if I’m being really picky. We will definitely be coming back ☺️

Google
Came for the special ramen and stayed for an extra serve of the chicken, which was crispy and juicy in all the right ways. Music and lighting were fun but chill, service the right amount of attentive. Thanks for a delicious dinner!

Google
Ice tea is delicious but you can’t really taste any of the earl grey it’s brewed with. The fried chicken burger is great and the chips are nice but way way way too much salt it was inedible

I dined in last night and have to say the waitress Ellie was amazing. She was really warm, kind, considerate, got everything spot on, didn’t make us feel weird about continuously bothering her. Food was fresh, hot, delicious. Very reliable option. I’m gonna go back in less than a week.

Google
The food here is actually INSANE. Easily the best vegan/vego substitutes around. The Chicken and Burgers are the obvious standouts, but don’t sleep on the Halloumi Bites, Donuts and Chips with Ramen Gravy 😮‍💨

Yelp
A neat place with friendly service. It's a bar with food or a kitchen with alcohol but either way it was a light-hearted fun place to eat. We sat outside. The french fries were tasty and lightly seasoned. The chicken was made fresh and was good but could use a bit more flavor in the breading for my personal liking. I guess it was lacking uniqueness. I absolutely cannot say it was bad, But I would not return because once you've been there, unless it knocked your socks off, you don't need to go back.

Yelp
Fantastic fried chicken. The place has a cool local vibe with indoor and outdoor seating. The menu has lots of great options. I loved the Cheesus sandwich. Was an amazing choice given a day of walking and beach. My mate had the chicken salad, it was so well presented and lovely, I almost wish I had ordered it...but then I would have had to order fries/chips. So good. The food was quick and service efficient. We had beers and cocktails in our hands almost as we sat down! If you're looking for a fun local feeling place check out Butter!

Yelp
One of the best restaurant decisions we made during our time in Sydney. We stopped in for lunch after being captivated by prior reviews and Butter did not disappoint this Southern American girl who loves champagne and fried chicken. It's a smaller, funky place with fun music - probably much louder than a normal restaurant but low enough where a conversation can be easily held. I had the lunch box with chicken tenders, shoestring fries, and corn. They do all three items incredibly well and I didn't leave a trace of food on my plate. The chicken was seasoned to perfection. And we couldn't figure out how the fries were salted to be so addictive. To end the meal, we were treated to the doughnuts that came out warm and were delightful - they curiously had a hint of spice to them as you finish. The customer service was great with super friendly and upbeat staff. Highly recommend this place for a bigger than normal lunch or more casual dinner. When I return to Sydney, I'll be back to enjoy again!

Yelp
Since returning from the States I'd never expected to find a soul food restaurant that could live up to what I'd experienced. Then I found this place. To say that the food here is sublime would be putting it mildly. It was a quiet weekday. My wife and I wanted a spot of lunch and one of the main reasons we travelled to the city was so I could finally try Butter. We were the only one's there, besides the waitress who moved and spoke like a manager. My suspicions were confirmed when she started interviewing potential employees at the back of the restaurant. She was very cool and managed (see what I did there?) to look after us while conducting the interviews. One of our drinks came with a hair in it, the manager replaced the drink and gave us a free donut. The chicken was sensational, juicy with perfectly deep fried skin and the coleslaw was a creamy contrast that helped ease the spicy sauces. The donut was an amazing pillow of sweetness that made you want to keep eating more. I don't know much about the whole hip hop scene, but I felt like I could just chill here and savor the scenery of barely dressed women enjoying the same great tasting food. Was this lack of clothing a result from enjoying the chicken? Throughout the meal I periodically checked that my clothing was still on. I couldn't conclude my review without mentioning the Laced Up Fries. It came with all these things I'd never heard of - kewpie mayo, Japanese special sauce, furikake, bonito flakes. "What was this stuff?" I wondered. When it came out it was like a living creature, the bonito flakes contracted and released from what I assumed was waves of heat. It was an amalgamation of hideousness and wonder, like one would feel when seeing a deep sea creature for the first time. It tasted incredible, just incredible. I will be back for more unbelievably fantastic chicken.

Yelp
Heard so much from my colleagues and read so many good reviews about this place! Came here on a Saturday afternoon and it was literally empty. 3 people were there but they left shortly. The music was pretty loud which I hated. Service was good though. The server explained to us the menu. I tried the 3 piece box and changed the slaw to shoe string fries. I got 3 tenders instead of 2 tenders + 1 thigh....eek. The chicken was decent, moist and perfectly cooked. The batter was not over fried and is flavored/ seasoned (but wish there was more kick to it). It's overall good KFC, but nothing special really.

Yelp
Butter is an interesting place. They have great fried chicken and they sell shoes. The shoes are essentially decor in the storefront window. Almost all of the seating is high stools. We ordered the 3 pac (1 thigh, 2 tenders), the chicken sandwich, the miso corny (corn on the cob, miso butter), and the laces (shoestring fries with shitaki spice). Both entrees were served with a side of slaw. It was a LOT of food. Way more than 2 people need. We were very hungry after a long morning of sightseeing and ended up finishing most of it. It wasn't the best fried chicken I've ever had but it was fine. They have various sauces that come with the 3 pac but I am not a fan of most sauces so I requested it on the side so I wasn't committing my entire lunch to something I didn't think I'd love (for the record - I didn't like the sauce) but they charged extra to have the sauce on the side instead of on the food like it normally would be served. Huh? The corn was delicious and I'd probably chose that over the fries if I had to pick one side. I don't normally enjoy cole slaw but this one wasn't bad. 3 stars.

Yelp
I will literally have dreams about this chicken sandwich. I'm from one of the fried chicken capitals of the US in Nashville, TN and grew up on this stuff. I've tried dozens on dozens of fried chicken joints across multiple countries and states (USA) and this is easily in my top 3. I'm also a sauce lover so it is a rarity for me to find a chicken sandwich so well crafted that I think it doesn't need any sauce at all. However, when I bit into the (naked) sandwich for the first time my first thought was ohhhh damnnnnn, should I order a second one right now? It's one of those situations where the food was so good you start thinking about your plans for the rest of the week to see where you can fit in a return trip.

Yelp
Super friendly service with a personal touch in a small, unique restaurant that sells kicks, plays Drake (loudly) and sells THE BEST HOT CHIPS I'VE EVER HAD!!!!!!!!! I got the Cheezeburger which I was able to finish in no time. The ingredients were simple and fresh and the fried chicken was bloody good but the chips... omg. Shoestring fries with some sort of seasoning (Butter don't give away the recipe easily) in a tray of heaven. I'd go back every week just for those skinny golden fried potatoes. I also tried one of the chicken tenders with the OG sauce and the sauce was fairly gross; it reminded me of Cheetos and not in a good way which was quite disappointing as I expected this to be the main attraction. The 'fire' sauce on the tenders was also a let down and like the OG it had a powdery texture and taste to it. When I go back I'll be ordering all of my chicken "naked" and I think you should do the same; after you bathe in the chips that is.

Yelp
Giant, insane, two handed chicken burgers served in shoe boxes with champagne. I could probably finish the review there because really, what more do you need to know? Oh wait, also there's a ton of sneakers in the window and one time Wu-Tang Clan came in after a Sydney concert and bought up a whole bunch of them and now there's a neon Wu-Tang logo in the window. If you get chips and dipping sauces on the side (chi-lli! Chi-lli!) be aware that you've just made a big-ass meal that will be hard to finish, it will be like running a really delicious marathon that you might die during but what a great way to go.

Yelp
Great fun. Fried chicken . Finger licked good. Loud. Eclectic. If you like your chicken with Dom Perignon and sneakers , this is the place for you. High intensity chicken laced with your choice of chillied sauce., laces (fries) with lashings of Nutella. What more could a man want? Oh. Beer of course. A great choice of beers . Everything from a Rocks Brewing Conviction Pale Ale to a 650ml Natch Brewing Weekly Bomber. 10 boutique choices plus ciders and slushes, plus of course a page of sparkling champers. Great hosts. Great night. Thanx guys

Yelp
Julian Cincotta, formerly of Rockpool and Nomad and Mo Moubayed and Paul Flynn from Thievery have brought nearly all my interests together in the form of Butter, a new restaurant/bar in Surry Hills. Sneakers Fried Chicken Hip Hop My holy grail...minus burgers. If you have an interest in any of these, you will love it here. The fried chicken here is SO good...it takes influence from Korean Fried Chicken and American fried chicken. This was the soft opening so it wasn't a standard experience, but I was able to try the normal fried chicken and the spicy fried chicken, as well as the chicken sandwich. The normal fried chicken is awesome, not too salty but with big pieces packed with flavour and a slight kick. The spicy fried chicken is SO good...the sauce is a combo of the sauce you'd expect on Buffalo wings from America and spicy Korean fried chicken, topped with some buttery goodness. Seriously, easily in my top 5 chicken places in Sydney from this. The Chicken Sandwich, well I had more of a slider may very well be the best chicken sandwich in Sydney right now. Step aside Mary's, step aside Pub Life Kitchen....seriously this sandwich is goooood. Fried chicken, pickles, dashi butter, and a side of slaw it's painfully simple and painfully delicious. The slushies they have are dangerous as well, as you could easily down several of these and then wonder how you ended up so crunk. Come visit cause this place is going to pop off

Yelp
This is one of those magical delicous tasting places !! There's heaps & heaps of Restaurants around Sydney who have fried Chicken on thier menu, some taste good, some are average and fair few are terrible!! As for the fried Chicken here they ticked all the Boxes lol!! Juicy tenderness delicous fried Chicken!! That sums up their menu on what there is to eat at their restaurant, but you don't need anything more on the menu when the chicken tastes this good !! I had the fried chicken with the bun i personally loved the Chicken on its own. The Slaw was very nice aswell as the shoestring fries & dipping sauce !! Was accompanied with 2 very picky with their food work friends & they all the more pleased like me .. so it was great Success lol!! The alcoholic slurpee was pretty small for the price but still had the strongish alcoholic taste that i was looking for. Tried a spoonful of the fruitloop looking ice cream in a cup & it was very tasty so next time will be getting chicken on its own, 2 slurpees & a cup of fruitloop ice cream !!

Yelp
Have heard many things about this place, including their soft serve flavours. So stopped by just to sample their sundae. They had 2 flavours 1 lime with popping candy and fruit loops and the other peanut butter with chocolate and butterscotch topping. The lime was nice and refreshing and the fruit loops went really went with the. I'm not a huge fan of peanut butte ice cream so i thought that one was ok,. The interior is smaller than expected with tall tables and stools to sit on. Will hopefully be back soon to sample their chicken!

Yelp
Best chicken burger I have ever tasted!!! Order the cheeseuz with ranch instead of mustard BEST!!! The bun is beautifully soft and the chicken was so moist and juicy on the inside yet the skins crunch was cooked to perfection!!! Make sure to get the shoe string fries to share, meals are well proportioned.

Yelp
We had an excellent dinner at Butter last evening. If it wasn't for the food being sooo good, I would have given only four stars because we originally intended to Eat In, but the music was so loud we decided to Carry our order after we could not have a conversation. That being said, the chicken sandwiches are amazing. This is definitely a great place to grab a bite to eat. If you like loud music, then you might choose to eat in.
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered the master pack for 2 american dudes. Plenty of food. The chicken tenders were just as juicy as the chicken on bone. The fire sauce was bomb.

Yelp
Fried chicken meets perfection meets EPICNESS!! Rocking out some fried chicken is a rare occasion as it's likely not loved by your doctor. So when you do it, it damn better be worth every bite. This place... wow this place makes it happen! Worth the calories and heart attack. Seriously... AMAZING!! Oh and the atmosphere is super cool, staff is great, and prices are VERY fair for the quality you get!

Yelp
Fried chicken and sneakers? Butter says "hells yea", and does it right. Despite some folks eschewing the serving of their fried chicken in a shoebox as "tacky", I have no qualms about it as long as they serve up good fried chicken. And boy, are their fried chicky as tasty as they come! Tasty batter that stays crunchy (after delivery), and flavorful chicken meat even without the batter. Saved some leftovers and about to head to the fridge and dig into some cold fried chicken - it's *that* good. A little on the pricey side to satiate a random fried chicken craving, but perhaps a combo deal of sneaks and chicks? I'd be down for that.
google avatar

Yelp
Dunno what it's got to do with butter. There are sneakers. There's some bad arse music. There's bloody good champagne and some Aussie sparkling wine and there's fried chicken. Damn good fried chicken. Slaw with no onion. Thin fries and a dude flogging the limited edition sneakers he doesn't sell in the shop on eBay. Or maybe he's buying more? Our chips had moving parts and they were triffic.
google avatar

Yelp
Warning: don't go if you are on any sort of health kick, if you are trying to count calories you probably can't count high enough. Warnings aside this place is awesome. The chicken is amazingly decadent and will leave you wanting to crawl up in a small space and just digest quietly for a while. The ice creams are also worth a look in although I doubt many can survive the chicken in a state to order one.

Yelp
Had lunch in a sneaker shop. Saw this place on Howardsheet and checked out the website. Talk about food porn! The site has a picture of a couple of girls who have taken off their sneakers, and pretty much everything else, to eat their chicken. Another pic shows a poor girl who accidentally got her arm stuck in her undies while she was trying to eat her lunch. Messy. I checked my underdaks and went to get a chicken sandwich. Its actually pretty easy to get through one without getting tangled up in your Bonds if you are careful, and its so worth it! So simple but so delicious. Dashi butter, a couple of pickles, and a super soft bun, with a yummy coleslaw side. And the chicken? Finger lickin' awesome! When I go back next time I will try some of the additions like fries and some of the sauces. A very cool spot with the website photo on the roof Burt Reynolds style, and super friendly folks to help disentangle you and your Cottontails should the need arise. I will be back, this place is brilliant....for food.

Yelp
The chicken sandwich is made of literally one piece of chicken, pickles and dashi butter. The best thing above the chicken is the skin. If you're a fan of very crunchy skin, Butter's fried chicken will hit the spot. While eating this other than the excellent skin, it was like eating very expensive KFC. There was a lack of any memorable flavour. This sandwich desperately needed some kind of sauce. The chicken in general was too oily. You would say that fried chicken is supposed to be oily and with a name like Butter, what would you expect? It was too much, I want to eat a couple of pieces without feeling sick. Other places achieve excellent fried chicken without those sickening post-KFC symptoms. The pickles were welcome to cut though that greasiness. Having the sandwich with the slaw is almost compulsory at these oil levels. The chicken flesh itself was cooked well but there is better out there. Their hot sauce is said to very good. If you're a fan of heat, the 3 piece deal is the way to go. Conclusion Just like the sneakers in the front window which are loved for style over utility, the ambience and branding of Butter quite simply overshadowed the food. Butter offers decent fried chicken and that's the only food you should order (the sandwich was below average). It is quite a chilled and trendy place to have a drink while eating fried chicken however if you're in search of the best fried chicken, you should relegate Butter down your list.

Yelp
I ordered Butter through UberEats last week (to Alexandria). Pretty seamless and the food was cooked and on its way very fast. Unfortunately the driver got a bit lost, but that was not Butter's fault - however it did mean my chips were cold. I ordered a Cheezus which came with the slaw. The burger is fantastic - super soft bun, big piece of super crispy fried chicken, delicious cheese and sweet honey mustard. The lettuce was cold and crisp, but it was cut really chunky and hard to eat on an already huge burger. The slaw was refreshing and really tasty. I loved it. I also ordered a side of chips - which was huge and I'm sure totally delicious when not cold. And a side of buttermilk ranch dressing, which was also really good. However I feel like the burger and slaw are enough. I can't wait to have this again.

Yelp
Who knew champagne and fried chicken would pair so well? I found out about Butter exactly a day before it opened, on a website known as Concrete Playground. After reading it, I made it a goal to visit this place after work, on a Friday evening. Way to end the week am I right? I went there with a good friend of mine and immediately we ordered a glass of champagne and 13 pieces of fried chicken. There are about 4 different flavors for the chicken, original, medium and hot and fire. We ordered the hot and original. Once I had that first bite, I rolled my eyes up. It was too good to be true! I told my friend that that exact feeling after my first bite was too surreal. At that exact moment, I decided that I will come back in the near future. Hands down recommended. You won't regret it.

Yelp
It really surprised me to get (U.S.A) Southern Fried Chicken in Sydney. My parents are from the South and loved it, my dad said their coleslaw was the best he's ever eaten...(And trust me, he's eaten a lot of it) He got slapped by mom because he was supposed to say, 2nd best coleslaw he's ever eaten apparently... Our table was right by the kitchen and I could see how immaculately clean they kept it...watched a tiny piece of batter hit the counter and was immediately cleaned up...Next time I'm in Sydney, I'm going back!
google avatar

Yelp
Heavy hip hop influence as soon as you walk through the door which was unique in its own right in Sydney. This place was tucked in the Surry Hills neighborhood. The chicken was fried to order and very fresh. So no heat lamps or "ready to go chicken" which made the flavor even better. The staff is great and the drink menu is worth exploring. Had a Hennessy Apple myself. All in all, this is great for groups or just need a bite to eat. Definitely worth checking out for the experience and food.

Yelp
Butter is about 20 meters from my work so obviously we were destined to meet. Butter is one of the oddest combination of concepts in one store. It is a high end bar that also serves fried chicken and of cause also seel sneakers. Their chicken is great! Their three piece combo is fantastic and at $16 you get plenty of food. This also comes with a very generous helping of Slaw. Their chips are $6 a pop and also of a very healthy helping. The coating on he chicken is a nice mix of spice and flavour however for the fellow wooses, go the naked option without chilie sauce. Havent bought any shoes from there yet but there is always time......

Yelp
Amazing fried chicken! Definitely get fries with that. The chicken was perfection. Skin is perfectly crispy, the meat is juicy. We shared a size 13 box - came with a crazy amount of chicken, a lot of sauce, and pickles and coleslaw on the side. We ordered a side of chips - don't underestimate these fries though. Really flavoursome on their own, even better with all the sauce the size 13 box comes with. So much sauce! A sauce lover like myself who normally douses all her food in sauce was very impressed. One thing though- service wasn't that great. Took multiple staff members to answer our simple question of which 3 sauces does the box come with. We were first told that we only get one sauce, then have to pay for any additional sauce. So we asked them why the menu states it comes with 3 sauces. Unnecessary confusion. They also served us warm beer.

Yelp
Excellent food and great atmosphere. The name butter makes sense once you try the food here. If you dont like butter, dont bother but overall the fried chicken is great here. Decent portions and good quality food.

Yelp
So me and my homey are having a great time in Sydney. We came for work that turned into a mini vacation or as y'all would say a Holiday. Like I said me and the homey have been taking Sydney in. It has an SF vibe but more laid back. My homey and I got the munchies after uhhh...well you know get munchies We googled what was around the place we were staying at and this joint was like 3 blocks away so why not. At first when we saw it we were confuse because there's a bunch of dope sneakers on display which I was like damm we got played. But nah, they serve some good ass chicken! They got this box filled with some crispy, but hella moist chicken. They also got fries that's drizzled with Nutella. I thought that was kinda like uhhh...but let me tell you, munchies or no munchies that shit was fire! I guess sweet and salty always go together. This thing even had a donut! A donut! The perfect food for someone who's got the munchies or not. I'll definitely be back and try some more food!

Yelp
Hello, welcome to a nightclub that has fried chicken and shoes. Essentially, yes. Also a waitlist on busier nights. Definitely a nightclub. No dance space, but the lights and music are definitely nightclub. Fight me on this one, I am correct. I am never wrong. I love nightclub chicken shoes.

Yelp
One of the best fried chicken places I've tried, hands down! Crispy chicken with great selection of sauce, great fries, salad side dishes. If you order the large size of chicken you get serve in a shoe box. If you like your fried chicken, definitely a good place to test try!
google avatar

Yelp
How can you go wrong with fried chicken, sneakers and champagne? This place is weirdly gimmicky and hip all in one. The chicken here was excellent too though, and their fries come with some salting that was on point.

Yelp
I love the food and also the music. I would say its the perfect time to come especially if you just want to have a cheat day!!!!

Yelp
this place should be called beyond butter. it 's a great experience! and the food is also really lovely- casual and comforting just like butter! The chicken quality is out of this world. sorry chik-a-filet [America] this goes way beyond that.. Yummy yummy yummo

Yelp
Really nice bar and kitchen with friendly staff. I enjoyed my specialty cocktail and had the chicken sandwich. I'm from the states and by far it rivals few others. The chicken is tender, juicy and nicely seasoned with a lightly smoky heat to it. I really enjoyed it. Wish I could take some back home.
