Butterfield's Ice Cream

High quality ice cream with a great texture and lots of flavor options. Butterfield’s was delicious! I tried the daak chocolate, banana cream pie, and black raspberry. The chocolate was nice and chocolate-y. The banana cream pie had real banana and cookie pieces and didn’t taste like fake banana. None of the ice cream was overly sweet and it all tasted like it was made with high quality dairy.

The wait staff at the window weren't in the best mood, maybe because we went on a hot day but their working in a/c. Ordered the vanilla peanut butter ice cream, which had no taste of peanut butter and no indication of being anything other then unflavored. Waffle cone was stale. Strawberry shake was alright but specifically ordered a banana split with no chocolate, got chocolate. Good thing we weren't allergic. We will stick to Gifford's for ice cream.

The best ice cream that we have ever had! SO GOOD!! The only problem is it's 4+ hours away from where we live & I crave it all the time!! The flavors are all so good, and I haven't had ice cream like this anywhere else!!

Delicious homemade ice cream! Stopped here in August 2025 before heading back to North Carolina. Had their wonderful "Dover-Foxcroft" sundae. Vanilla, chocolate, and mint chip ice cream topped with hot fudge, caramel, whipped cream, and of course a cherry. Eight bucks for more than I could finish. Cannot complain. The best food of any type in all Piscataquis County! Will be certain to return on my next trip to Maine. Highly recommended!

They make all of the ice cream themselves. I have tried several of their flavors and they all are delicious!

Stopped by this homemade ice cream shop today and was delicious lots of flavors to choose from and lovely staff. Great remodel. I recommend the fudge mocha brownie and the chocolate peanut butter

Yummy!! We did a flight of 4 kids scoops and they were all really good. And my dog loved their pup- ice cream bowl.

Great customer service with a smile! While the flavors haven't changed they are introducing a special flavor of the month. Such friendly customer service I'll definitely go back!

Although the kitchen is unfortunately closed for the time being, we still enjoyed our visit - we've got the delicious ice cream to thank for that! My dad got the black raspberry shake. It was creamy and not too sweet. Only down side is that there wasn't enough. My mom got a dish with each type of raspberry: raspberry chocolate chip, black raspberry, and chocolate raspberry. Black raspberry and chocolate raspberry were by far superior. I got a scoop of black raspberry and a scoop of Mint Katahdin Breeze. It was a great combo. Wish the chocolate pieces were bigger. The gals behind the counter were super helpful, both in describing certain flavors, and also in providing recommendations.

Super disappointed to see the website hours listed closing at 9pm in June. Drove a half hour. Please change your website hours. Thank. The ice cream is delicious though when you are open.

Tasty ice cream, owners seemed nice. They make their own ice cream. I wish my butterfinger ice cream had more pieces of butterfingers, though.

I happened upon this place after a hike up in Maine's heartland. This is your classic New England ice cream stand. Real homemade, creamy perfection, with a butterfat percentage that may fatigue your plastic spoon. The cupcake flavor was an underrated gem, a sprinkle filled decadence.

Huge portions and solid ice cream. Several flavors were out but it was close to the end of the season. Sundae probably had a bit too much sauce which made it sickly sweet which was a shame because the ice cream wasn't able to be the star of the show when it should have been. Easy to reach spot by the side of the road. Worth a stop and definitely the pick of the ice cream options in the area.

I don't get the hype! Stopped by hopeful of some more delicious Maine blueberry ice cream and didn't find it. It had a really bad texture--full of ice. Also, the blueberries were really crunchy since they were frozen, and didn't add much flavor to the ice cream, which wasn't that great to start with. Some of my family that didn't get blueberry ice cream found the same texture issues and none of our ice cream was particularly tasty. I'd go elsewhere, but I seem to be in the minority on the reviews :-(

They might have nice ice cream but I didn't get to find out. If you are disabled, or care about protecting the dignity of those with disabilities, this is not the place for you. You might end up spending a lot of money on your ice cream only to be yelled at, humiliated, berated, and kicked out by owner. Calm reasoning and de-escalation techniques did not work. In my case, it was my legal service dog that set her off, but no one is safe. She also yelled at my elderly Aunt, who has dementia, because she left the door open. Additionally, if you are in a wheelchair, it will not be possible for you to enter without having to rearrange the entire dining room, causing another embarrassing spectacle. Basically, I would just avoid this place altogether unless you enjoy witnessing vulnerable people being humiliated in front of their families.

In a sea of look-alike dairy bars selling Gifford's Ice Cream, Butterfield's proudly makes and serves their own creamy, rich frozen treats. With flavors like Mint Kadahdin Breeze (white mint ice cream, fudge swirl, chocolate mint candies), the ubiquitous but necessary Moose Tracks (it is moose country up here, after all), and the usual complement of cookie, candy, and fruit flavors, Butterfield's has flavors that will please everyone in your family. The ice cream texture is perfect - it could not be smoother. Chocolate flavors, such as Peanut Butter Chocolate, lack deep chocolate flavor. Mint flavors are a better call. Sundaes are a bit of a disappointment. Fudge is thin and lacks body and flavor. My guess: it is from a can or bottle - no one makes home made fudge like this. In addition to the stand, there's an indoor seating section if you'd prefer to eat your treat there, mosquito-free, and save your car's upholstery.

This is my family's favorite place for ice cream. It's all home made and they will make any of the flavors into a milkshake upon request! My current favorite is mocha fudge brownie with big chunks of brownie throughout.

5-star ice cream that will over shadow any other ice cream that you've ever had. Great prices and plenty of flavors. The best part is that they are all made in house. This isn't a typical ice cream stand where they sell Gifford's or some other bulk bought ice cream to resell. This is hands down the best ice cream you will ever have. If anyone has ever been, you know it's one of their first stops when they come back to Dover.

I have had the Maine blueberry,black raspberry, Coffee and peanut butter all where amazing and can not wait to go back.The best ice cream in Maine in my opinion!

Omg best ice cream. Go!! Seriously think it's some of the best. Can we also talk about how butterfields is the best name... here's a tip: if you get a pre packed quart of ice cream, it's the same price as a hand packed pint. THAT is a steal.

Love Love Love their ice cream. The ice cream of doom is my son's favorite! Homemade, classic flavors - tasty and creamy ice cream. If you are looking for a classic ice cream stand that feels like summer, this is the best! Only reason it's 4 stars is that they raised their prices :( so it's more of a splurge now. Folks for far away, will still find it a bargain!

My wife, my mom and I were driving around when my wife expressed a desire for ice cream. I found Butterfield's on Yelp as we came to Dover-Foxcroft but initially couldn't find it. It turned out to be a bit further down the road than Apple Maps indicated. I had a banana split which was delicious. My mom had an iced cappucino which she liked so much she got another. My wife had a dish of ice cream. All the ice cream is made there and is very good. Butterfield's serves more than ice cream - burgers, hot dogs, sausages and even clams (though those were not available when we visited.)

Ice cream is fantastic enough-but the real winner for me here is the lobster roll-the best I have ever had!! Very light in the mayo with a hint of tarragon-just scrupulously delicious-and the ONLY way to make a lobster roll!

Best ice cream around! Award winning and they totally deserve it! We are now properly addicted to the ice cream here. I love the coffee health bar, soooo good. The prices are so reasonable!

Our favorite ice cream we've had all summer! Texture was very thick, held up on a hot day to eat via sugarcone without melting. My blueberry was delicious, husband's Almond Joy was very tasty, too. Lots of flavor to chose from. Only passing through... Wish we were here longer to try the Angel Food Cake flavor!

Donna and Bob have created and ice cream paradise in a place you'd never expect. It's the first place our family stops on our way into Sebec Lake and the last place we stop on out way home. The Black Raspberry is the best I've ever had and my son and wife get mint chip every time. If you want to experience the best than try the Mt. Katahdin Breeze that has chopped up Andes candies in vanilla ice cream with fudge.

I love Butterfield's Ice Cream. I live in Massachusetts but have a house in Bowerbank. Whenever I am up in Maine I always make an effort to stop in here for a treat. The ice cream is delicious. It would be more convenient if they could take debit or credit cards and I wish the staff could be a little more friendly.

My parents have retired to the north country and introduced us to this place on our last trip. I'm sure the next time we head to Maine it will be equally to see my parents and to to eat at Butterfield's. ;)

Traveling from Iowa to Maine for business I've stopped at Butterfield's a number of times and found their grapenut ice cream as great as when I used to get grapenut ice cream growing up in southern Maine as a summertime Sunday treat. Great folks, great ice cream.

We are at Butterfields two to four times every week we spend in Maine over the Summer. The chocolate peanut butter ice cream is not like any ice cream that you have tasted anywhere. The peanut butter is a tasty ribbon running through the ice cream. We are still trying to think of a way to get a container of it back home with us.
