Buttermilk Channel, a Twee Brooklyn Landmark, Is Closing

"Open since 2008, this Carroll Gardens restaurant built a loyal, family-oriented following over a 16-year run thanks to brunch-forward comfort food like house-made pickles, cheddar waffles with buttermilk fried chicken, duck meatloaf, fluffy pancakes and a warm lamb salad with sturdy greens and a soft‑boiled egg. Its easygoing, kid-friendly atmosphere—paper on the tables for crayons, outdoor seating for sunny brunches and a communal table that hosted milestone dinners—made it a neighborhood mainstay and a place where regulars’ children literally grew up eating. Owner Doug Crowell, the sole proprietor, says the menu remained largely unchanged because of those deep customer relationships, but he is closing the restaurant on December 31 to focus on other projects, including the decade-old Boerum Hill bistro French Louie (which he runs with Ryan Angulo). Two outposts in Japan will stay open, and Crowell hints he might reopen in a new location, but longtime patrons describe the closure as heartbreaking and full of personal memories, from impromptu nor’easter dinners to post–City Hall wedding meals and a celebrated pecan‑pie sundae." - Luke Fortney

Really mid pancakes 🥞🫠 Passed this place hundreds of times over the last decade but never stepped it cuz it felt like a tourist trap. Noticed they had a lunch drink special so decided to try it. Note: the drink set is only for like 4 specific items. Went for the buttermilk pancakes since that’s in their title and what they constantly show off on their menu The good? Pretty big pancakes 🥞 and 2 slices of butter. You will get full. You can even order mini 2 pancakes set if you want more pancakes The bad? Where is the buttermilk? This might be the driest pancakes I’ve had in Japan. Even after using the 2 slices of butter 🧈 😗 Staff was nice and refilled water without asking ✌️ One order required per person QR order system Free WiFi

The wait may be long, and the buttermilk biscuits were sold out, but the cheddar pancakes are really nice. Fried chicken is crispy, but the meat is fine (not overdone, but could be more tender/juicy). Also, fun to see popovers in Tokyo, and pretty good! Service is friendly and efficient. You only have 90 minutes to eat during peak times, but it's more than enough, as they serve the food quickly.

Food was okay. The chicken batter taste good but the meat is almost tasteless just a normal chicken. Their pancakes were delicious!

Awfully slow service! The meals all came out at different times, and the first person finished their meal well before the next one even came out. The food was okay, but a thorough warning that you only get half a waffle when you order the “chicken and waffles” - it may be one of the only restaurants in the area where you don’t have to wait for a table but I think I know why now. I don’t recommend this place.

Google
Not exceptional food, service or atmosphere. It was very mid. We ordered the lunch course for 2,500+, it had the mains, dessert, salad, drink, and a tea after. It was okay...... very meh. We had a reservation for our table, but no exceptional service there. Will i go out of my way to go to this restaurant?? Nope. Will i come again? Only if I have no choice.

The place looks beautiful, very stylish and chic—exactly what you'd expect in Omotesando, one of Tokyo’s top (and most expensive) areas. However, the experience was extremely disappointing. The service was painfully slow and unresponsive. When we asked about our delayed food, staff barely acknowledged us before walking away. The worst part? The food. The chicken was, without a doubt, the worst I’ve ever had in Japan after living here for years. Even the burger, one of the simplest dishes, was terrible. With such a prime location, this restaurant should do much better. A nice aesthetic isn’t enough—service and food quality matter just as much. Hopefully, they improve because right now, it’s not worth it.

The food and the size was excellent for the price. It was a very good brunch place! However we had a not pleasant experience with the waiter who received us. Although we are a group of foreigners, all of us not only spoke Japanese, but also had a reservation. The second the waiter lady saw us, she (who was just manning the reception desk at the time mind you) didn't even ask us if we have reservation or not or anything. She just told us to wait and then left the reception table willy nilly tried to act busy. She left us standing for some minutes. Only once we called her back to say we had reservation did she started accepting us. She even told us she was the server for our table but not once did she came by to "serve" us. Following the rise of anti-foreigner sentiments from Japan this led me to think negatively of either the waitress or this particular establishment. Please train your server to be more welcoming to oncoming guests

Google
Cozy. Decent food, but I wish the portions were bigger. Very slow to deliver food. Delivered food for a party of 2 at different times (5-10 minutes apart). Didn't refill water until we were about done eating.

Yelp
A must visit place when you are in Harajuku!!! The avocado toast really good. Great place for some great food at a decent price. Chicken sandwich came without sauce and was delicious. The spinach cheese dip appetizer was very tasty and enjoyable. Good budget place to eat but alcohol is on the more expensive side. Mojito was tasty and proper. Service was fast quick.Great ambiance to hang out for drinks.

Yelp
Right outside of exit 5 of the Meiji-jingumae station, its a great place for an American brunch. I was actually headed to the coffee shop upstairs but saw the menu outside that had Eggs Huntington. Very nice atmosphere which another yelper said could be straight out of SOHO. Ordering is via QR code which is convenient. Food was tasty. The cream of mushroom soup that came with the meal was fantastic, just wished it was a larger portion. Service was good. Would definitely recommend if you're looking to eat something other than Japanese food.

Yelp
Though not for breakfast, I've stumbled upon in here after my annual health check-up at a nearby clinic. They give the patients a meal coupon for all the sufferings that they make their patients go through (think gastroscope and mammography). How nice :) So my pick was here; I swore the brochure says they serve excellent pasta. So I came, but I ended up with their signature dish - Buttermilk chicken. And I am glad I did because it did remind me of the good old US days. Not sure if this is authentic enough, but it was good enough for me! The chicken was tender, juicy inside yet crispy with tons of flavors outside. The flavor that I would expect from a joint that serves southern food from the US. More than the chicken, I want to write about the mini sundae that came after the chicken. It had a tiny scoop of vanilla ice cream along with what seems like a mascarpone cheese (which seems to be a trend in Tokyo now), so I am thinking, great. Still, it looked pretty ordinary... then, as I continued digging, I noticed a thick layer on the bottom that seemed to be dark chocolate cookies? The server told me it was their signature pecan pie crust from the US. Ahh, it was a heaven-sent dessert, super delicious! I enjoyed the food and would plan on returning!

Yelp
Awesome American style breakfast with real salads! Given that this was my first brunch since coming to Japan, I was really excited for the food. Initially, though, I have to mention the decor here. The place felt almost as if it were taken right out of SOHO and plopped in Harajuku: the wooden tables, pastel colors, and metal cutlery definitely sets it apart from traditional Japanese restaurants. As for the food, I was really satisfied with my beef hash which came with a real salad, beef hash, eggs and bread. All the food looked to have been prepared right before we ate it, and I appreciated the care put into the dishes. Would recommend.

Yelp
It's American inspired food with a twist. They have fried chicken and waffles as well as fried pork chops and waffles. You won't find a classic waffle in sight, only cheese ones. I had their take on eggs benedict, called Eggs Huntington. The english muffin was replaced with a buttermilk biscuit and prosciutto stood in place of the Canadian ham. Way better than a classic eggs bendedict, I only ever want it this way from now on. My friend loved their caramel pancakes with ice cream and the overall ambience was pleasant. Pricey but that's expected in Harajuku, our bill came out to about $38 for two meals, two coffees and a side of bacon. They have free wifi you just have to ask for the password.

Yelp
After walking all day visiting different shrines, my family and I stopped by to enjoy an afternoon treat and a cold refreshing beverage! I enjoyed a Kirin beer with Fried Chicken and Waffle bites...it was soooo delicious!!

Yelp
「Yelp 100 Challenge 2019 - 東京」#2 Buttermilk Channel replaces the café/diner that was previously located in this Harajuku storefront, and really makes you feel as though you've been transplanted to Brooklyn. There are two things which you absolutely must come here for, and those are: 1) the Bloody Mary's, and 2) the cheddar waffles from the fried chicken & waffles First of all, I'm a huge Bloody Mary fan, and Buttermilk Channel mixes up one of the very best in the city. It's wonderfully spicy and has an excellent kick of fresh horseradish. They've also got a Bloody Mary topped with a fresh oyster, which is a must-try if you're an oyster fan. The fried chicken & waffles here are some of my favorite that I've found in Tokyo, but the funny thing is that while the fried chicken is good, it's the cheddar waffles that steal the show. Fresh from the waffle iron, the cheddar adds a savory salty component to these crispy tender waffles that will have you raving about them for days. The balsamic maple syrup is a nice combination of sweet and tart flavor that complements the waffles and fried chicken perfectly. The servers have been very friendly every time I've come here, although it can occasionally be difficult to get their attention depending on where you're seated. One thing I'll mention is that although Buttermilk Channel Harajuku is on the Harajuku end of the street, it would be a better fit up the street in Omotesando as it has more of an upscale atmosphere and pricing. You're not going to see gaggles of trendy Takeshita Street teens here, but rather couples on dates and women in their 20s and 30s. 4.5 stars rounded down to 4 stars for the price point.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this restaurant while walking in Harajuku. It happened to be Sunday brunch so being from America it naturally pulled us in. The wait to get in was less than 10 minutes. Once I entered I instantly got LA/NY vibes from the layout. The staff was very friendly. The brunch menu has many different options to choose from. The baked apple pancakes were my favorite food item while the Fair Harbor was a solid drink. I wish I had more time to try all of the items. Definitely a good place to stop for anyone looking for a familiar American style meal.

Yelp
I had been wanting to try this brunch spot for a while and finally got to go last week and it did not disappoint! There is a variety of options and the drinks are spot on. I order the ABC grilled cheese and would order it again every time we go. Apple, Bacon, Cheese in a panini style sandwich was phenomenal. The mimosa paired well. It has a great vibe inside and the wait staff speaks English pretty well.

Yelp
LOOOOOOOOVE Brooklyn Buttermilk Channel. Excited to try this in Tokyo. Menu posted outside included fried chicken. We sat down and were told "no chicken." Surprising but fine. Reason for 1 star: Service was horrid. It was the only bad interaction we had after 10 days in Tokyo and so severely bad it's worth noting here so management pays attention. We did not stay for the meal.

Yelp
My husband and I stopped in today to have a quick bite and a couple of cocktails. Cute place, definitely reminded us of New York. However, we were never served the food we ordered. Despite asking two different servers for a simple grilled cheese. We had the feeling we were not wanted. So after an hour wait and two cocktails we left. I'm still left wondering if our treatment was based on our nationality. Left feeling humiliated.

Yelp
I love the brunch here! It's hard to come by really good American-style brunch spots in Tokyo, but this place is amazing!
