This $67 Ski Pass for Kids Is Back—and It's Bigger Than Ever

"I see Buttermilk listed among the 19 Colorado mountains included in Colorado Ski Country USA's expanded Ski Passport for kindergarten through sixth grade; the passport provides four ski days at each participating resort, includes two junior rental packages, and costs $67 for K–2 or $72 for grades 3–6, making these mountains well-suited for younger skiers while also being great spots for adults and ideal for a family ski getaway." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. The 10 Best Ski Resorts in the World | Vogue

"I love the easy access to four fantastic mountains—Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, and Snowmass—plus live music options and many excellent restaurants. I dip into intimate on-mountain dining at Lynn Britt Cabin on the slopes of Snowmass, where foodies can eat and drink in a private cabin in the mountains, or Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro high up on Aspen Highlands, which boasts an iconic Alpine atmosphere and a champagne-spraying après-ski scene. After a day on the slopes, I head into Aspen for world-class shopping, restaurants, hotels, and museums, grabbing a drink at the Little Nell, browsing the Bottega Veneta store, and having dinner at White House Tavern." - Corey Seymour, Elise Taylor, Gia Yetikyel

Buttermilk is an absolute paradise for snowboarders! It’s home to the Winter X Games, the terrain park setup is incredible. One time they had a double half pipe. There are jumps, rails, boxes, and features for every skill level, from beginners just learning to advanced riders who want to hit the big lines. It’s one of the best parks I’ve ever ridden. During the X Games, the whole mountain comes alive with awesome live concerts, energy, and great vibes everywhere. Even when the event isn’t going on, Buttermilk has a fun, laid-back atmosphere that makes it perfect for riders who love freestyle terrain without the intense crowds of the bigger Aspen resorts. The runs are smooth, well-maintained, and the views are classic Colorado beauty mountains for miles. Whether you’re here to shred the park, cruise mellow groomers, or just hang out in the X Games vibe, Buttermilk is a must for any snowboarder. 🏂.

Amazing place for concerts! The Up in the Sky nights were unforgettable — mountains, music, and atmosphere all coming together for pure magic. 🎶✨ I hope they keep doing more events like this. Only tweak? The shuttle wait after — smooth that out and the whole experience is flawless.

Had to leave a review for my absolutely spectacular Snowboard teacher Ed. In 2 days he made me feel super confident and finally achieve my lifelong goal of learning to snowboard. He was so kind and patient and I would recommend him 1000xs

I recently visited Buttermilk mountain in Colorado, and it was an unforgettable experience! The ski slopes are perfect for beginners and families, with great snow quality that makes for smooth skiing. The facilities are top-notch, and renting equipment was super easy. The staff is friendly and professional, especially the ski instructor Marco Spitzer who is so patient and helped me quickly master our skiing skills. The entire resort has beautiful scenery that makes you want to stay forever. I highly recommend Buttermilk Ski Resort to all ski enthusiasts, whether you're a beginner or an experienced skier—this place offers an unparalleled skiing experience!

Gaston was an awesome instructor and what a nice guy! He was so helpful with teaching myself and my wife and he was great what trails would be best to go on. His knowledge was top tier and his professional ability to see our varying skills and teach to both was amazing. Ask for him! Also the Buttermilk staff was very helpful and nice and the main counter especially Ms Hutchison! Great ski slope great people and super amazing instruction! Thank you Gaston!

Children and beginner friendly mountains and ski resort. Allowing all level of skier or snowboarder to ski together here in one giant mountain. Parking is walkable and the summit has great restaurants with views by gondola

We have skied and hiked Ajax, Snowmass, and the Highlands a number of times. Other than eating at the BBQ place at the base of Buttermilk, we have never skied this mountain before until today. As expert level skiers, we were pleasantly surprised by how much we liked this mountain. No, it is not challenging, but there is tons of sidecountry tree skiing, and the powder stays in there for days after a storm. Buttermilk to us felt like a mini version of Beaver Creek or Deer Valley. This is a great place to learn how to ski.

Google
We took lessons the first day because we both had zero experience.. they were great, my instructor Neil, a white south African accent having guy was funny and patient with me, after many slams and what felt like broken wrists and tailbone I had the confidence to try the mountain and by the 4th day we were doing the blue routes. The gear rental was pretty easy aside from the line of field trippers. It was an amazing experience and a great place to learn, can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Under-rated and too easily dismissed by experienced skiers. Have travelled to Aspen four times in the past several years and only on this trip visited Buttermilk. Accessed by (complimentary) town bus about 10 minutes from downtown Aspen the vibe is easy. Home to the X-Games and the half-pipe etc. still visible President's Day weekend. Staff friendly, lifts efficient - their are a variety of routes for beginner, intermediate and expert skiers. I experienced the group lessons for three days (to rediscover my ski legs) and found the quality of tuition excellent (ask for Bob Morse or his opinion on whom to learn with). Ultimately I spent five days skiing the resort and enjoyed it immensely - the ease with which I could build familiarity enabled me to focus on technique and the relatively light number of skiers meant the runs were not crowded. Interestingly I spoke at length with instructors who made the point that Buttermilk seemed to be where they had their fondest memories. The Cliffhouse at the summit serves some great food - if you are not skiing I noticed snow-shoers making their way up by foot or buying a lift ticket to go dine and enjoy the views of neighboring Highlands.

Yelp
It's a lovely mountain if you are a new or learner. Not much in the way of advanced terrain here. Short groomers. Some fun spots to dip into the trees or small sections of bumps. 5 lifts and a terrain park. Lots of ski school lessons for kids and adults. Ski school sucks up a lot of lift capacity. CliffHouse lodge on the summit is nice for lunch. Lower base buildings are new and fresh and clean. Shops. Food. Booze. Gear. Aspen priced so look away! Lots of entitlement here. Lots!! I think this would be a great place for an easy powder day. Nothing special here.

Yelp
It's probably time I write a review of our visit to Aspen about a week ago, specifically Buttermilk. This mountain is heaven for skiers and snowboarders! I underestimated this mountain and all of its glorious trails that were fun and scary at the same time lol. Super friendly staff everywhere from the lodge, the lifts, and each of the bases. So happy to have been able to experience Aspen!

Yelp
Great mountain for beginners. My friend hasn't been on skies in 20 years and after my wrist fracture during a ski jump a few years ago we both felt like beginners so we started with Buttermilk. Nice, long green run with some blues. Easy breezy with beautiful views of the mountains and the town below. Cute little restaurants and bar on site.

Yelp
The mountain was beautiful and spacious. We stayed downtown, so it was very easy to get to. There is plenty of parking at the base of the mountain for free, plus you can take the free bus directly to the mountain. The employees at Four Mountains were very helpful setting us with quality rentals to be safe and ready to tackle the slopes. Everyone working the lift areas were super helpful and gave quality advice to make sure you and others stayed safe. My only drawbacks, not negatives, were the food quality to price at the mountain. This could be a huge positive for the resort, but needs some attention. There were plenty of options, everyone working was super nice, but just a little pricy for what you get. Then again, you are paying for convenience.

Yelp
I love the mountains it was so clean and organized perfect for a family vacation but the only bad thing was the food for example they serve Karen air for 50 bucks ! And is not good is too naughty and creamy but you should go there

Yelp
I went to Buttermilk for snowboarding, and it was really small and the snow wasn't good. I asked about opening times and I had to question a few times before I was given the right answer (although to be fair, I asked a person under training), and the lifts also start a bit later than the other resorts, at 9AM. I went on a few runs and got bored, so I only spent about half a day here. The slopes are mostly green and blue, and it wasn't super fun either. This was definitely my least favorite out of the Aspen resorts.

Yelp
Great beginners mountain for skiing. You do have to arrive early to get tickets or ensure you purchase them online. Staff was very accommodating to find a package that fit our family.

Yelp
As far as just Buttermilk Mountain, it's probably one of the Best Beginner/Learning mountains in the country. Why? Because: - Ski school instructors are outstanding - Rental shop uses the best brands - Rossignol, Salomon, Volkl, etc - Rental shop is right next to the lifts - Never any lift lines - Great bunny hill at the base to learn on - Rest of the mountain is good for learning and others as well who might be in your group who are Intermediate skiers, so you don't have to split up - Mountain is always empty! Just a great place to learn or for beginners to go to or for families as well. Wish I had learned here! ----------------------------------- As far as Aspen as a Whole, everyone knows Aspen is 5-Stars...the town, the restaurants, the nightlife, the people, all 4 mountains. It's all Top Notch, and the best Ski Resort Town in the Americas (both North and South), in my opinion. Even skiers in Europe, South America and Japan know Aspen. Most skiers rate ski resorts on just the mountain (extreme level) and snow. I'm different. I rate ski resorts as an Overall Package...the mountains, snow, amenities (lifts, rentals, food on mountain), apres ski, crowds and what the people are like, nice restaurants, bars/clubs/nightlife, higher-end lodging with outdoor hot tubs, etc. I'll admit, I don't go skiing just to ski, I go for the food and nightlife too, and well, I'd be lying if I said I didn't like to be pampered while I'm at it, lol. Going up and down the mountain to just ski, packing my own lunch, and just having a few beers back at the room while smoking pot is not my thing, as it is with most skiers, especially ski bums, lol. So, given that, for me, the Best Ski Resorts in the World are: 1. Verbier, Switzerland 2. Aspen, Colorado 3. Chamonix, France 4. St. Anton/Lech, Austria 5. Cortina, Italy 6. Zermatt, Switzerland 7. Ischgl, Austria 8. Whistler, Canada 9. Bariloche, Argentina 10. Niseko, Japan And Yes, I've been to almost every major ski resort in the World - 22 West Coast, 17 East Coast, 9 in Europe, 6 in Canada, 4 in South America and 2 in Japan. So, as you can see, I love Aspen! And if there's any place you should ski at least once in your lifetime, it should be here! Just my opinion.

Yelp
Buttermilk is a fabulous area to enjoy your outdoor skiing/snowboarding adventure. I took a couple adult ski lessons, since it had been awhile. They were terrific! Small group size and very detailed instructions. I was able to ski the remaining five days on my own (blue/green trails). Staff members are extremely friendly and courteous with A+ customer service.

Yelp
The smallest of the 4 mountains in and around Aspen. Geared for beginners as it contains most of the green runs available in the area. Most of the runs are gentle and wide and perfect for learners and families. Lots of clases at the ski school at the base of the mountain for both kids and adult beginners. Has a small park on the western slope. The Tiehack lift area has decent intermediate blue and black terrain that can be enjoyed by advanced skiers, though the runs are a bit short. The lift is quite fast though. There's plenty of parking around and decent dining options, both at the base and at the top of the mountain. Regular free bus service runs runs towards both Aspen and Snowmass Village. It is rarely crowded, and the Tiehack slope especially can be quite desolate even during the busiest times, great for skiers who like to have the runs to themselves. The only downside is après scene isn't really happening (aside from X-Games) if that's something that's important to you. It's the site of the Winter X-Games when it becomes overrun with people. Has some spectacular views on the top backside of the mountain towards Aspen Highlands and the valley in-between.

Yelp
The rental company located here was just fantastic!! All the employers who helped me get fitted for my rental gear were such an amazing group of people! Every single one of them were extremely friendly and gave me very helpful tips since I was snowboarding for the very first time. Checking the gear out and returning them was so easy.

Amazing instructor, Richie Rich! Made snowboarding so much fun! Can't wait to come back !

Yelp
Buttermilk may still have the Aspen city zip code, but let's be honest. It's not Aspen-Aspen. We chose this mountain for the purposes of utilizing our Lower Lift pass which is intended for beginners. You will not have access to anything else but the "Panda" or more commonly known "Bunny" slopes. That's truly all we needed as we knew we would be on our bums the majority of the day. The tickets are only $40 per person but the experience was still great. Parking is free and right off the highway. If you're lucky, you can take the lift behind a training group and see it all in action AKA Free Lessons. No but seriously, Buttermilk is right next to Aspen Highlands and offers just as much mountain as Highlands minus the shopping area that Highlands would give you. Just choose wisely based on your experience. If you're greater than intermediate, go to Highlands. If not, stay in Buttermilk.

Yelp
Buttermilk is a great starter mountain. I took my first ski lesson here a year ago and within two days I could ski down the entire mountain alone. They have several green and easy blue runs for beginners. Its a great mountain for an intermediate level and beginner level to ski together because several of the harder runs have intersecting points with the easier blues. Watch out on the weekends because Buttermilk hosts ski camp for kids. The children will be headed down the mountain in chains of 3 to 6. There is nothing more terrifying than turning a corner and realizing you are three feet away from smashing in two 6 three year old kids in their adorable ski suits. Be sure to bring extra money for lunch if you plan to eat at the restaurants at the top or bottom, and I'm not kidding when I say extra. In true Aspen style, two orange sodas cost over $9 and a meal is easily over $20.

Yelp
Great place for true corduroy early in the morning and nice long trails. Love this mountain along with Snowmass and Aspen Highlands.

Yelp
Great mountain for skiiers and snowboarders of all skill levels. I took a 2-day small group less for intermediate snowboarding. I loved it. Only in Aspen can you see super professional instructors. I had a South American instructor and he helped lose the fear of getting off the lift! Yes, that was the only part I feared :) not falling... The blue slopes are long enough and have a lot of variety... Oh I miss you Aspen! Just so you know, Buttermilk is a fair bit away from Aspen village. I'd recommend you to stay near the mountain, even though they have free shuttles, it makes a lot of stops in the village.

Yelp
My kids were extremely happy after a full day lesson and had a positive experience we might drive 4 hours again for.

Yelp
I learned to ski here (on snow) when I was 4 (1976). In 2005 my wife and daughter (age 5) learned here as well. Next February I hope to see my now 5 year old learn as well at Buttermilk. There simply is no better place for any person - regardless of age to learn to ski. The staff is very experienced and incredibly patient and polite. They make it very fun for the kids and generally after the first lesson they are ready to trek up the main lift. The food at the facilities is always good - especially the pastas which I recomend (greasy food for hang-overs don't work at this altitude). We recommend Buttermilk to all first time skiers but with regret that that Aspen itself (short of the orignal Bakery) is nothing like it once was. EDIT We did make it out this February and my youngest can now say she learned where the rest of the family did! My now 12 year old had a blast - she was only 5 when she first came out to Aspen and this was her first trip back. Buttermilk remains a great family beginner based ski hill in Colorado! Do yourself a favor though if you head out that way. Rent an entire home in nearby Basalt - buy your food and booze there and stay in to eat!

Eleni B.

Yelp
My sister looooooved herself some Buttermilk. Though we are already able skiers, this looks like a great place to learn. We loved flying down the blacks--they were completely empty! Everyone else must have been crowding Snowmass :) Don't overlook Buttermilk!

Nattana J.

Yelp
I wish to tell everyone about how accommodating Buttermilk staff are...always thinking about the stress a mom has with small kids and learning to ski. I have brought my kids here since they were 3...with all sorts of mishaps, and each time the staff is there to rescue, aid and always with a smile. Last year my 5 year old got altitude sickness and they helped me beyond the call of duty. This year we show up with new skis/boots which I swore they set when we bought, but we show up at the base ready to ski and my kids can not get into their ski's...A concierge at the base in a CAPE sweeps in to save the day. Not to mention easy drop off and pick up for kids to lessen the walk. All around you guys do an awesome job. Thanks for making life easier! Restaurants have lots of options from kids meals to amazing stir fry, salad bar and beer/wine. Lots of kid friendly sides as well, fruit, yogurt, fruit cups, etc... Skiing: I have been skiing Buttermilk since I was a kid, it is wonderful for kids and beginners, the snow was in great shape yesterday even in light of the low snow fall so far. We look forward to coming back and skiing the tree trails when more snow is here :)

Yelp
I am a beginner level, Skied here for four days! I had a absolutely awesome experience! Had two days private lessons and one day beginner magic! All the instructors are nice and patient. The mountain is also great for beginners! There are many different routes and the mountain is huge for me to practice my turns!
