On the Grid : Buttermilk

"Buttermilk is the place to go when you miss some classic American food. Located on the ground floor of Amba Zhongshan hotel, the bright tiled wall and large windows offer a charming view of tree-lined Zhongshan North Road. The open kitchen allow customers to observe how every dish is cooked behind the counter. One of the best-selling meals is "Grandma’s Buttermilk Boneless Fried Chicken"; the chicken is marinated with buttermilk and spices overnight. Then it's dipped in batter and fried, to achieve a crispy taste. The tender meat and crispy skin is a perfect combination. Other favorite dishes include fire grilled "Beef Ribeye Steak", served along with bitter sweet rocket leaf and grilled garlic, mediterranean inspired salad with grilled figs, quinoa, feta cheese. Save some room for their amazing desserts: the homemade buttermilk biscuits, fresh lemon pie, and classic blueberry lattice pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream can never go wrong." - SW8

After a few visits, i liked almost everything EXCEPT the fried chicken. Not a budget restaurant, but portions are generous. You likely will leave quite full. The service is very attentive. Great job. When busy it can get quite noisy; some customers yell like they’re outside. Burgers: all 5/5. Yum. truffle flavor was rich, beef patty was generous, bun was crisp/chewy and delicious Fried chicken: 2/5. Was quite looking forward to this, but honestly most bites had more breading than chicken. Two sauces are provided, one is quite spicy (good), the other is white gravy (I found it too heavy with just fried chicken…maybe if there were a biscuit served alongside…). My favorite thing about this dish may have been the watermelon :/ Carrot cake: 5/5. Oh yum. Huge size. Probably supposed to be shared. Whiskey caramel sauce makes it even more rich and delicious. Key lime pie: 5/5. Oh yum. Rare to see this in Taiwan. The sugar crumble crust was excellent, along with the thick pie filling. Caesar salad: 3/5. Not bad, the lettuce and tomatoes were crisp, the Parmesan chips were good, but the dressing is a bit bland. Crab cakes: 5/5. I would get these again. The tartar sauce is great. Blueberry pie: 5/5. Maybe my favorite dessert here. Fish and chips: 5/5. Surprisingly good (compared to the fried chicken I had). The tartar sauce is great too. Macaroni and cheese: 5/5. Fresh baked and tasty. Pork ribs: 5/5. Especially like the watermelon bbq sauce.

We had the meal delivered and in spite of travelling it was really really good Fried Chicken. So American style with real southern US style biscuits. I liked that the condiments, butter, white chicken gravy, hot sauce and a blueberry spread for the biscuits came in biodegradable paper containers. As did the chicken. It was nice to have "外帶晚餐" with no plastic garbage 👏. I will make it a point to visit the restaurant next time.

Usually good nonetheless this time this ribeye steak missed. It’s 8oz $1400.- a really bad cut of meat. Almost half is fat and uneatable, the rest is good. Service is good even after they offered us free beer for apology. Nonetheless this piece of meat should have never been cut and cooked for customer. A kind reminder to the chefs. Usually 4 stars today it’s a two.

Went here with a friend for dinner. The burger was above average for Taipei, but nothing spectacular. My friend got the fig salad which I thought was better. They have a decent sized menu, prices are what you would expect for Western restaurant in a hotel. Staff was friendly, but felt I had to track down servers to get there attention, which was not a great experience. The front of house staff needs to be more aware of customers and check in on them occasionally.

We ordered the dinner set for two and every dish is beyond expectation. The portions are very generous too. We need to pack up the dessert in the end.

This is the second part of our series on how we utilized our complimentary accommodation tickets from winning the Taiwan the Golden Land lucky draw. When we called to make reservations, we were pleasantly surprised to learn that they accept the accommodation vouchers since they are part of the participating service providers. To our delight, we were able to combine and use multiple vouchers after verification. The establishment has a cozy, upscale ambiance and is impeccably clean. For our meal, we decided to order the 5 pieces of fried chicken, biscuits, fries, a full slab of pork ribs, and the spiced carrot cake. The biscuits were moist and warm, and they were served with a delightful combination of blueberry jam and butter, elevating the overall flavor profile. The fried chicken was a standout, boasting freshness, crispiness, juiciness, and, most importantly, tenderness. Being boneless, it made for a truly enjoyable and delicious experience. The pork ribs were expertly marinated and cooked to perfection. The meat was tender, and the dish was served warm. Its distinct flavor profile complemented the fried chicken, enhancing the overall dining experience. In summary, it was a fantastic experience! We extend our gratitude to the Taiwan tourism board and Buttermilk for providing us with such a memorable meal. We absolutely loved it.

Overall quite disappointed. The menu looks very attractive but the actual food does not. we ordered the avocado salad, fried chicken, cheese burger with bacon jam, biscuit and carrot cake. Everything is lacking of flavour: Avo salad tastes only acidic and greasy. Fried chicken is bland and definitely need more seasoning. Carrot cake is greasy and made by someone who hasn't taste a proper carrot cake. Biscuit is probably made out of the ready mix as it has the same flavour. I can see why it's popular with the locals as it tastes nothing.
