buurtcafé de tros was an outstanding experience from start to finish. even before our visit, i reached out to ask about gluten-free options and was reassured right away that this wouldn’t be a problem. upon arrival, the staff checked again and were incredibly considerate and knowledgeable about cross-contamination risks. one dish, for example, usually comes with shallots fried in the same oil as bitterballen, so these were thoughtfully left out for me – a level of care that really stands out.
the food was fantastic. we started with the maitake mushroom appetizer with smoked butter, which was absolutely incredible – deeply savory, full of umami, and perfectly balanced (my friend had the shallots served separately). for mains, we had the entrecôte and the gochujang aubergine, both of which were excellent. to finish, we shared the “heavenly mudd” – a chocolate mousse with salt and olive oil – and the name could not have been more fitting.
the vibe is young, hip, and very relaxed and the interior is beautifully and thoughtfully designed, adding a lot to the overall atmosphere. the team was attentive, genuinely friendly, and happy to guide us through their great selection of natural wines. all in all, it was a wonderful evening, and as someone with celiac disease, i felt completely safe, well cared for, and truly able to enjoy the experience. highly recommended.
