Nothing warms my soul like a cute book boutique. This lovely little whole in the wall had such a diverse selection for all ages. I was especially in awe of the historical books and fantasy books regarding the island. Definitely stop in and check it out. The staff was sweet and welcoming.

Buxton Village Books is one of those rare, magical places that feels like home the moment you step inside. My family has been vacationing in the Outer Banks for years, and no trip is complete without a visit to this charming little bookshop tucked away in Buxton. It’s more than just a bookstore—it’s a tradition, a staple of our summers, and a place that holds a special place in our hearts. Every shelf is packed with character, from beach reads and local interest books to children’s favorites and hard-to-find gems. I love that they carry titles by local authors and books about the rich history and ecology of the Outer Banks. The woman that owns the bookstore is always warm, welcoming, and incredibly knowledgeable. You can tell she truly cares about books and the people who read them.

Google
Such a cute, little quaint bookstore in OBX! I loved the details about the origin of the bookstores house. There was a gently used 50% off section as well that had some great finds! My daughter found a new release in the YA section and got super excited! We will most definitely return next time we are in OBX!

Google
My wife and I always make a stop. Beach and a new book, nothing better. The store is truly a treasure.

Google
I have been visiting the outer banks for years now & always wanted to stop by but never did. I finally did this year. This is a great book store! The owner was super sweet & very knowledgeable. I bought 2 new books while there & will make this a permanent stop from here on out. If you've wanted to stop & haven't, I highly recommend it.

Buxton Village Books is an absolute treasure! Stepping inside feels like discovering a hidden gem, thanks in large part to Gigi, the thoughtful owner. She's perfectly balanced a fantastic selection of national bestsellers with an incredibly strong showing of talented local authors, which is wonderful to see. Beyond that, the shelves are filled with such thoughtfully curated books – you'll find unique titles and delightful surprises around every corner, clearly chosen with a genuine love for books. They even have a delightful kids' section, a thoughtful array of art supplies, and unique gifts and cards perfect for any occasion. A must-visit for any book lover on the island!

New releases, Fiction and non-fiction available, some used books as well, painting supplies and markers. Unique art and souvenirs. House is original to island along with local history inside the bookstore. I enjoyed the selection of books available and the flower garden outside. 40 years of books, a must see while visiting OBX!

Google
I was so impressed with this bookstore! It’s very cozy and has a great selection of books as well as art supplies, cards, stickers, etc. I also loved that there was a large used book section. There’s something here for everyone! I will definitely come back any time I’m in the OBX.

Yelp
Very cute find while visiting. Have a lot of up to date books and some local history stuff. Had something for all ages and have some neet arts and craft stuff for the kids if you need something for them to stay busy. I decent sized used book section as well with good titles. There is a little tiny room you can step down into filled with notebooks and handmade journals as well as a few tarot packs. Just be careful if you are tall as my 6'4 husband hand to duck down a bit to get in the room. Prices where decent and their "date with a book" section was very reasonably priced. We didn't nab anything this time around but was a nice to keep in mind for our next visit.

Yelp
Great book selection. I was visiting from out of town. They had the book I needed in stock. Lovely people.

Hannah M.

Yelp
Wasn't feeling well so I wasn't able to stay long. The selection was expansive and the store was organized very well. Would totally recommend for anyone island cruising who wants to find a new beach book.

Yelp
Loved this little bookstore. From the outside it's a tiny quaint historic island home. On the inside there are rooms and rooms of curated books for any reader. Up front are several shelves of local history and interest. You'll find lots of best sellers, several shelves of used books for those looking for a bargain, gift sections, journals, an adorable children's section and all the standard genres of books. Somehow, all these sections fit in the building with a flow that keeps you interested and moving. The owner greeted us and gave us space to wander. There were only a handful of other off season customers. I can imagine it would be a tight fit if there were more than 10 but the rooms and flow should help with that. The shopkeeper did stay behind plexiglass mostly when we were there but I'm not sure why people were complaining about that. Seems safer for them and gave us space to look through leisurely at the titles. There were so many interesting books that it was difficult to make a selection. We'll definitely be back on our next vacation. Oh, for local history buffs, the rafters in the ceiling are from the original building from 1864. They were salvaged from a shipwreck since lumber was in short supply, the nearest lumber company being in Buffalo City.

Yelp
I will automatically give businesses 1 star when they do not provide a washroom for customers. If you want the public's business, provide a place for them to do their business and wash their hands. What is a child or an elderly person or pregnant mother supposed to do?

Kimberly E.

Yelp
Support local bookstores!! Went during the summer so it was a bit crowded but the staff was very friendly. Good selection of books, but similar to the selection at the Island Bookstores. One of the only places near OBX with a used book section though! Love it!

Valentina P.

Yelp
I have been visiting the store for the past few years and noticed a difference in behavior pre pandemic and the "new normal" current times we live in. The owner used to be helpful in recommending books and this time as soon as we walked in the store she hid behind her plexiglass door and showed no interest in interacting with her customers. If you are afraid of people and their germs (ridiculous notion) plexiglass is not going to save you. Please retire as you are not making customers welcome here.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite bookstores in the Outerbanks. It's very small and cramped but the house is old - lots of historic character and it's crammed with books. There's a really great selection. And if you're at the beach and looking for a good beach read, Buxton Village has a great selection of the newest and popular books + a deep section of regional fiction and non-fiction. They also have a lot of books for children of all ages to choose from.

Yelp
Nice little book store if all you read are generic books with all the same old thriller writers who are just phoning it in. Nothing new or interesting to find here. I suspect the owner purchased large lots of common authors at a good price but does not read New York Times book review to discover new or up and coming authors. It is a shame as I have gone to the Island book store to find treasures such as Henning Markell, Slough House books etc. Tomorrow I will drive up to Nag's head to find a better selection.
google avatar

Nichole V.

Yelp
The woman who owns this book store is a gem. She doesn't have a book on the shelf unless she reads it first. At our annual OBX trip this year, she had a drive up book service because of COVID. I called her and told her the genre I was looking for and she gave me wonderful recommendations. I purchased over the phone and picked up off the front porch of the book store. It's definitely my favorite bookshop and I was pleasantly surprised when I still was able to enjoy it this summer. Do yourself a favor and visit this adorable little spot the next time you are in the Outer Banks.
google avatar

Jen D.

Yelp
This is my favorite bookstore of all time. The women who run the shop are so knowledgeable and can recommend the best books every time I go. This has been a highlight every summer for over 15 years. Between new books, to used, they have something for everyone- not to mention local authors too. If they don't have something they can get it in a day or so. Plus I love their recommendations for summer reading.

Yelp
Such a cute book store! They have a wide selection of used books as well as new ones. Definitely recommend stopping by and checking it out!

Bryan F.

Yelp
Great book shop! Wonderful variety and great customer service! We stopped by to pick up some new reads for the beach.

Yelp
Super charming local bookstore. It's very small but like many small bookstores finds space to house a large variety. If you enjoy cavernous, unique bookstores this is a must stop in the Outer Banks.

Yelp
Wow! How is it I am so lucky to be the first reviewer for Buxton Village Books? What's wrong with you people? Even if you don't read a single book all year long, you're OBLIGATED to read a book on a beach vacation. This rule is clearly spelled out in every piece of literature you received in the "Welcome to Being a Human" folder you were given at birth. No? Ok, well, then it's my rule. 1) A beach vacation is the PERFECT time to treat yourself to reading a book. 2) Reading a book will make you infinately more interesting at the S'more Roast later that night. 3) Roaming around a place like Buxon Village Books for 30 minutes is equivalent to 1 hour of yoga, or going to Confession. You'll be revitalized and forgiven. 4) I promise, you'll thank me later (and yes, that's another one of my rules)

Yelp
Some might be offput by this tiny building, but this is a local business who truly acts as a gateway to the world, often staying late on release nights, and able to special order or find old or odd books. The staff is not just super friendly, they're also super knowledgeable, willing to go above and beyond.

Yelp
This gem of an independent bookstore was a highlight of Outer Banks vacation. The shop is cute, tidy, and well-stocked, but more importantly the proprietor welcomed us despite the chaos that accompanies us when we bring our children places. The children's picture books are displayed at their level, and face out to encourage young readers to browse. While the selection isn't as vast as what you might find at a big box store, the collection is so expertly curated (the proprietor personally approves every title she stocks) as to ensure that each book you find is truly a treasure. We were so delighted by our experience at that store that we kept coming back for more. After three visits in as many days we've added such masterpieces to our library as They All Knew The Cat, The Napping House, and Octicorn. I can't wait until next year when we will certainly return to find more new book friends.

Yelp
First of all the address is incorrect on this page, do not turn where they tell you to. Keep going straight and its across from the animal hospital. This is what book store dreams are made of. I talked to the owner about the book I wanted and she knew exactly what I was talking about and where it would be. It wasn't coming in until tomorrow however. But she found me a new book series to start and I love it! I never would of picked it up on my own but she knows books. You can't get this type of service at Barnes and nobles. If your in town definitely stop here.

Yelp
Stopped by on our annual vacation. What a terrific independent bookstore - with everything you would expect - a great selection, an engaged, knowledgeable and friendly owner. A must stop for OBX book lovers.

Linda K.

Yelp
Great place to find the books you are looking for. It is a quaint house that has a great variety of books. Gigi will greet you with a wonderful warm smile as you walk in the door. She has a wealth of knowledge about the Outer Banks. Absolutely awesome place to visit!!!!

Melissa M.

Yelp
Great Independent Bookstore. Original owner has been in business since 1983. She reads every book before she stocks it in her store. We purchased a wide selection of books; some classics we actually needed for summer reading for high school; some great beach reads and a cookbook I'd been waiting to order. Also has perfect selection of island art, stationary, totes, and journaling/art supplies. Best thing, we can continue supporting this store by ordering electronic books through www.buxtonvillagebooks.com - will definitely return during our next outer banks visit.

Janelle B.

Yelp
We love this bookstore!! The owner is very friendly and helpful. They have a great selection of books about Hatteras Island. They always have the new releases. Their used book section is great as well. Be sure to check it out and support a locally owned business!!
google avatar

Amber H.

Yelp
How adorable is this bookstore? Quaint, charming and quite frankly, good for the soul. They have signed copies of books written by local people and a large local history section. You're vacationing here, so I presume you care how this place came to be and those that helped make it so. If you're not -- you're missing out on some interesting information.

Yelp
I was visiting Rodanthe from Seattle and oh my gosh I was so pleased to find a bookstore near where I was staying (it's tradition for me to buy a book when I'm on vacation)! This bookstore is so cute and cozy! The person working there is quick to please and will offer recommendations if you're overwhelmed by the selection. I've fallen in love with this place and I definitely encourage stopping by and checking it out! Also, if you're a tourist you'll be pleased to find there's a whole section dedicated to books pertaining to the outer banks area.

Yelp
My mom and I are both book lovers, so we had to stop and check this place out during our vacation. This shop has the classics and more contemporary books. This shop is tiny, but mighty. It's definitely worth checking out!
google avatar

Melanie L.

Yelp
While little, the place is incredibly charming. It is absolutely loaded with books autographed by local authors and the lady assisting us, was very resourceful. There is a decent selection of books of all genres and sure to satisfy the vacationing bookworm.

Yelp
The best place to find a good book on the island. The store is well stocked with the hit parade of best sellers, new releases and old favorites. There is a young adult section and a great selection of used books too. You may even find something from JR's summer reading list he so conveniently forgot to bring with him. If you can't find exactly what you'd like they will order it in for you as they did for me. It took about three days and was fairly priced. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Between my wife and I we purchased five books over two week including the special order. They made for a very pleasant vacation among the other serene and gentile attractions on the island. A gem like this deserves your support.

Robin K.

Yelp
You can tell that this is a store run by someone who loves books, and that every book they offer is cherished and hand selected. There is a great variety of local lore-both fiction and nonfiction, as well as lots of newer titles with broad appeal. In the back room is a large selection of half priced used books, in case you run out of books to read on the beach. There is also a very nice young adult section - this love affair with books started early. There is something for everyone here-whether you want an escape, a challenge, or something to soothe your soul. A must stop for me on every trip to the island. It's cozy like being wrapped up in a blanket in front of a fire on a cold winter day.

T S.

Yelp
Fabulous spot for vacation wandering and reading. Love the trade-ins. A very wide selection of used books.

Jonny G.

Yelp
This is a charming bookstore. Not only do they have a great selection for such a small space, but they also have a back room with used paperbacks for cheap. Although it's quaint and small they also have a great tech bent. They have a website where you can pick up digital copies, and they accept Apple Pay! To top it all the owner is super nice!

Gregory B.

Yelp
Chock full of all kinds of books. Easy way spend a few hours out of the sun. Lots of local interest books and kid stuff too.

S B.

Yelp
Great shop to stop in when you finish all of the books you brought on vacation. Nice, large, selection when you first walked in of books about the local area. Knowledgeable staff. Difficult to those with a handicap disability - the layout of the store is small, odd steps, due to the age/design of the building. Used book section in the rear of the shop - mostly mass-market fiction. Prices are fair - some a bit too low....many deals for shoppers. It would benefit the owner to go to Amazon and see the prices being charged for several of the books...I would hate to see this book shop not continue to be in business! Happy reading!

David T.

Yelp
Well, we happened to be in the area for some outdoor activities, when the weather decided not to fully cooperate. We stopped at the visitor center to see what else there was to do, got talking to Kevin, and found out about a book he recommended. So we looked for the bookstore in Buxton and found it. This is a small, independent bookstore owned, managed, and operated by an absolutely delightful lady. She had the book I wanted, so I bought it and then we chatted for awhile. The store has a great inventory of books, and an impressive assortment of books on the local area and North Carolina. So if you are in the area and want a book to read, go here.

Craig T.

Yelp
Great little store. Tons of used books as well as wide variety of new/current. When the rain comes, this is the place to stop and grab some reading material. Diverse selection of books, including teen and children's.

Catherine R.

Yelp
This store quite a treasure! We have been there three times this week. The owner is friendly, kind and helpful, she even looked up the kids reading lists from school to help us find their books. There is a large selection of books in a very tiny space, well worth the trip.

Jo K.

Yelp
The first time I saw this quaint, lovely little shop was in the 80"s. I never leave the island without stopping and getting a book. There is something about reading a book on the beach from Gee Gee's that surpasses all. I know there are thousands that feel the same because the place always has customers that are there for the ambience as well as the inventory and of course Gee Gee the owner. I never shop for a book to go to the beach because I want a book from Gee Gee's. She can tell you anything you want to know as she is truly an expert on any form of literature. Love the place and talking about it makes me miss it!!!

Patricia W.

Yelp
I just love this place what a great place to buy some unique books the manager was so nice this is a small independent place with charm like back on the 50's you can't find something like this store in whole I am from the west cost so this is unusual for me but I highly recommend this place!!

Ellen H.

Yelp
Buxton Books is always great - if you are looking for books on the local history, something new or something old. Stop, you won't be disappointed.
