"On the remote Buzludzha peak in the mountains of Bulgaria stands an unusual abandoned monument. The peak itself was the site of a battle between the Bulgarians and the Turks in 1868. In 1891 a group of socialists lead by Dimitar Blagoev met on the peak to plan for Bulgaria’s socialist future. To celebrate these events, the government in power during the height of Soviet influence decided to erect a monument commemorating socialist communism. Work on the monument began in 1974, and was undertaken by units of the Bulgarian Army assisted by numerous artisans responsible for the large statues and murals. Large images of Lenin and Marx looked over the arena built for state functions and celebrations. Above it all blazed a red star-shaped window in honor of Soviet Russia. After the government’s fall from power in 1989, the site was abandoned and left open to vandalism. The main entrance has been sealed and therefore closed to public. However, there is still a little way to get into the building on the right hand side of the building. Inside the Buzludzha Monument, most of the artwork has been removed or destroyed, but the concrete structure still stands against the elements.  A preservation team worked to get the monument listed as one of the seven most endangered heritage sites in Europe, and plans to preserve and restore the monuments are underway.  A guard has been put in place 24/7, so it is no longer possible to break inside. Visitors are still encouraged to visit the outside to experience the unique architecture." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

The enormous monument was truly impressive! A fantastic experience to see in person, even with the hard conditions of Winter. However, there is an issue with the Bulgarian authorities: they do not preserve it properly. Instead of developing a solid plan to restore this magnificent structure, they simply prevent visitors from entering.

This is spectacular! What an amazing piece of architecture. It's such a shame how neglected it now is. It was very worthwhile to visit to see this in person. One of my highlights of my trip! It was extremely windy and cold at the top but still worthwhile exploring.

An excellent experience! The drive up wasn't difficult and the roads were in far better condition than I expected from other reviews. It was very quiet when we went with only one other person there! It was very very windy and cold up on the mountain despite being a warm and sunny day lower down. I'd definitely recommend brining a coat! 👍👍

Truly an incredible monument to a bygone era. It is truly sad that it is falling apart in this day and age. The architecture is astounding and the size of the monument is truly humbling. There is no entry permitted to the interior. The doors are all welded shut and secured with padlocks. The old entrance to the basement through the hole is now sealed up. The road to the monument from the south is in good condition and clear most of the time. The road from the north is treacherous in the winter. As of December 9th, the north road was mostly slush and there are tons of potholes. We were able to leave the monument on the north road, despite google saying it was closed. However, stick to route 5005 if you do this. Also, pray for good weather! Realistically, I would just approach and leave from the south route. The monument is really a wonder to see and I wish I could have gained access to the interior. My wife said it had ghosts.

Stunning views, a glimpse into perhaps the most iconic communist era relic in the world. No access, but worth seeing from outside. Steep narrow access road car is essential.

Visiting the Buzludzha Monument is an unforgettable experience! The monument itself is absolutely amazing to see up close. With its unique design and imposing presence make it a must-visit. While you can’t go inside, and there’s a guard to ensure the site remains protected, the visit is still incredibly worthwhile. The surrounding views are breathtaking, offering stunning panoramas that are as impressive as the monument itself. Standing there, overlooking the landscape, is an experience I’ll never forget. If you’re in the area, Buzludzha is a must-see!

Eerie, now sadly neglected monument to the Bulgarian Communist era. Long windy drive up poor roads, rewarded by amazing views and a touch of modern history. Three car parks including one at the top if you don’t fancy the fifty story climb up.
