By Design Modern

Treasure trove By Design Modern is a hidden gem a mile east of downtown Vancouver. As is described in their website, they buy large consignments of used Danish furniture once or twice a year, and refinish many of the pieces. Entering their large warehouse, you never know what you’re going to find. We were in the market for six dining room chairs for our condo. We found a set of eight dark gray chairs that looked great, but we didn’t have room for that many. They also had four attractive teal ones in excellent shape. We considered doing a mix-and-match combining these four with a couple of unrelated singles in relatively similar shades of blue, but we worried that the combo would look too haphazard. At this point our attentive salesperson came up with a brilliant solution. They had two incredibly comfortable, bright yellow chairs with similar wood as the set of four. He checked in the back and found that they also had enough extra of the teal fabric so that we could end up with a color-matched set of six chairs, after the two extras were reupholstered. We just got the set home, and they look fantastic. We highly recommend Design Modern.

I purchased a bar cart of the website from By Design Modern’s website and couldn’t be happier. Their communication was excellent and they kept me informed every step of the way. The bar cart arrived beautifully packed and incredibly secure so nothing would happen to it. The piece itself was exactly as described and even more stunning in person. I’m so happy with my purchase and wouldn’t hesitate to shop here again. Highly recommend!

Bought a beautiful table and chairs. I’d been looking for ages. Finally found exactly what I wanted. Went back a few weeks later and found a stunning side board. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Reasonably priced for the quality and level of service.

Picked up a gorgeous teak dresser, amazing selection, everything was refinished beautifully. It was hard to choose but one did call out my name and the sales associate even had it delivered the same day. Great experience.

Holy hoard-a-rama! These guys have a HUGE selection of mid-century modern/Scandinavian furniture imported directly from Scandinavia. I was stunned by the selection and quality of the collection. The prices are ballpark for Vancouver mid-century pieces (definitely not over-priced like some), but again, the selection was spectacular. Teak and rosewood galore. Some great chairs and lamps too! This store is next to Sugar Barrel Antiques and is run by the same guys.

We purchased four teak chairs from By Design over a year ago. A young child visiting us was rocking on one of the chairs and tipped it over. The rounded back of the chair split open. We were heart broken as the chairs are so beautiful. We took it to the company, fully prepared to pay for having it repaired. The owner repaired it beautifully but refused to accept payment for the job. We will certainly be shopping in this store in future.
