Where to Eat and Drink in Cleveland Park | Eater DC

"Byblos is one of the few local spots to get a quick bite to eat in the neighborhood. Find all the typical Greek deli items like gyros, shawarma, souvlaki, spanakopita, and falafel. Then dig in under the large, covered front patio." - Jamie Liu

The type of place where you walk in. Look around See the guy that runs the place and go " Oh man this is gonna be good" And then afterwards its so good and such a spot you're sad you're only in town for a work conference and you cant be a regular. 11/10 will be back It just may be a while

Google
They’re okay! They’re alright gyros for $10.50. They were extremely greasy, so the bread broke pretty easily under it. The lettuce was semi-fresh. Tzatziki wasn’t the best I’ve had. And the gyro meat was 5/10, also not the best I’ve had. Overall, I’ve had better gyros. These were alright. They left me feeling gross for the rest of the day, definitely because of the meat quality. He didn’t skimp on the meat though.

We are visiting DC from out of town. We stopped by here after visiting the zoo and the food the phenomenal! Service was great! The person who was working, it may have been the owner was also dealing with some difficult clients and did a great job. 10/10 would recommend this place if your in town. I got a steak and cheese sandwich and it was way better than I expected.

Google
Everything was fresh but it was just ok. Small portions. Indoor and outdoor seating. Service was fast yet not very friendly, were 2 kind of grumpy persons. Prices are fine. The menu offer a variety of options for different tastes. The hommus was better than the babaganoush, however I did not enjoy their fridge temperature. Their red spicy sauce was the best

Google
Wonderful Lebanese food! Definitely a gem of an establishment not to be missed. Skip the hype & the canned ambiance, head over to Cleveland Park for the real deal. Enjoy your meal outside under the awning!

Google
First time trying this place out and found it as a last minute dinner option and was pleasantly surprised! The food was delicious, and the portions were generous! We ordered the gyro platter and chicken herb platter , both were around $14 including tax. The hummus was amazing and the pita bread was even better the next day when we baked it! We also ordered a piece of their baklava $3. The baklava was a bit too sweet for me but still yummy! Will be coming back and def recommend if you are in the neighborhood!

Google
Small place, friendly staff, good food. Byblos is a simple little Greek spot on Connecticut Ave. I stopped by for a quick dinner, which consisted of a spinach and cheese in filo dough platter, including a salad and French Fries. It was very simple, nothing extraordinary, but not a bad meal either. The owner was very honest and helpful. There was a young couple or pair of friends dining in a couple tables away from me, and a guy dining in at the opposite side of the restaurant. There was a counter where you order, two refrigerators where you could pick up sodas or water bottles, and a kitchen in the back. Not much more to this place, and it's mostly unassuming, which has its charm to some people. Note that I went a little bit after the general dinner rush, and so they didn't have many customers come in, nor did they have any dessert options available when I arrived, which was disappointing. No Baklava for me :( Maybe another visit. I'd recommend Byblos Deli for a quick bite to eat if you're in the mood for simple Greek dishes. 4/5 stars.

Google
We took our last summer intern out for lunch. We all enjoyed the food and felt that the food tasted very good and was homemade. The service was good, the wait for food varied for example the gyros came out quickly while the special took 5-10 minutes longer. One, thing that we were disheartened by was that they only had a 2 pieces of Baklava left while there were 8 people in our party. I will say I enjoyed the piece that I got.

Yelp
We just had your stuffed grape leaves with a dipping sauce of your hummos and garlic paste mixed. Chef Marco-thank you for creating just mind bending Deliciousness!!The flavors and textures are outstanding Seriously people, Marco's food is the Real Deal. It not only feeds your body and soul, he blesses your pocketbook with the most reasonably priced delicious and healthy food there is! Do yourself a favor and bless Marco with an order. You Will be back!

Yelp
I hadn't been here before but I was close by and looking for a quick lunch. I grabbed a chicken salad to go, and enjoyed it on the patio. It's a small inside with counter service, so I assume they do mostly takeout or quick eating. The chicken was SO yummy! It was super flavorful and grilled, with fresh lettuce, feta and onions. I also really liked the dressing. It's also one of the cheaper Greek salads I've found. Overall, would definitely go back!

Yelp
Not sure what happened, but our recent experience with Byblos Deli was not at all what we had remembered it being. The menu is the same, offering pita sandwiches, subs, house special platters, veggie options, and salads. We ordered the Byblos Special, which came with your choice of grilled chicken, kafta, or gyros (I opted for the gyros), which is served with rice, hummus, tzaziki sauce, and a large pita. I also added baba ghanouj and an order of kibbeh. Unfortunately, the gyro was super dry and had an off-taste to it; the rice, which was usually my favorite, seemed to have been sitting out for a while and was also dry. The hummus was gloopy and thin in consistency, as well as the baba gahnouj, and both didn't really add much to the dish. I'm a huge kibbeh fan, but these were also filled with a dried out meat filling, and dipping them into the hummus or the baba ghanouj didn't make it better. There are only a few tables inside to dine in, as most patrons seem to get their orders to go. Limited metered street parking is available. +dried-out food items +inconsistent +limited seating +limited metered street parking

Yelp
This place is a hole in the wall, but wow what a gem. I ordered the gyro with fries and it was delicious. I also got the baklava and it was delicious. The owner was really nice and spoke Spanish. I will be frequenting this place - it's 100% delicious.

Yelp
Amazing find! Visited the National Cathedral and wandered around ending up here before hopping on the subway back to the hotel. On our tour of Boston, DC, NYC....this was top of the list because it was good food and not touristy. Service was fantastic, food was great, prices were very reasonable. We ordered the Sampler, the Special, and a chicken souvlaki. Chicken was freshly cooked and vegetables were fresh. Would absolutely return.
google avatar

Maggie A.

Yelp
Don't be put off by the divey vibe of this place. The gyros and souvlakis are excellent and filling. Succulent meat, not at all dried or crispy like some places. Shared a side of fries, and with drinks, lunch came to under $30. These days, that's a good deal. Worth a stop if you're looking for a no fuss, solid Greek deli. There's limited tables inside (10-12 seats) and a couple outside.

Yelp
The food and service is top notch! Am looking forward to eating here again!!! I had a local friend recommend this place and can't believe I hadn't heard of it before. A true hidden gem!

Yelp
Reviewing after three experiences here: the first was informational, the second was my partner's for food, and the third was mine for food. For the informational visit, I was doing some canvassing for the local Sierra Club, to inform the restaurants of Cleveland Park about the ban on single-use/disposable items with food orders (plastic straws, plastic utensils etc.). Of all the establishments I canvassed, Byblos was the only one that expressed familiarity with the law and demonstrated their compliance. Major kudos for environmental responsibility. The second visit was by my partner, for falafel. He said it was definitely the best he's had in DC, and some of the best he's ever had, period. Finally, my spanakopita order tonight. I haven't had any local spanakopita since moving to DC over a year ago, and honestly can't remember the last time I've had it period. Byblos's is pretty great. A little pricey for the portion, but that's DC prices for you. Definitely filling and delicious. For the people complaining about the oiliness, that's authenticity, I've definitely had homemade spanakopita like that with my family. The richness is all part of the Greek love. I got the spanakopita to go and received it in a plastic clamshell of polypropylene (plastic 5) variety. In DC this plastic is recyclable, but it's also sturdy enough to be reusable, so I'm washing and keeping it- maybe for my next visit to Byblos, which is definitely happening!
google avatar

Stuart M.

Yelp
I had the falafel wrap. Lettuce, tomato, cucumber added crunch. Humus gave it a creaminess, and the tsadiki sauce provided snap. An inexpensive, nutritional, tasty lunch. It pairs well with a visit to the zoo-just up the street.
google avatar

Ted C.

Yelp
Amazing Greek food, right in DC. Nothing fancy. All business. But Byblos Deli delivers on great tasting Greek specialties! Fast, affordable, and worth going back!!

Liz L.

Yelp
Food is pretty tasty and get a good amount of food for the price. Nothing is revolutionary but it's a good basic Greek place to stop by in the neighborhood. The guy who takes orders is pretty grouchy, but I think that's part of the schtick. I wish their salads were a little more salad and little less dip and meat with some lettuce but for $12 bucks it'll do.

Elizabeth P.

Yelp
I love this place. I live in the neighborhood and come here frequently. I don't know how they make the Greek salad with chicken so delicious, but they do. I've tried a decent amount of the menu items and they've all been great.

Merril S.

Yelp
We had a scrumptious meal at a very reasonable price-- I will order from here again, and again! Lucky to have this gem in my neighborhood
google avatar

Ky V.

Yelp
The baklava is absolutely to die for. Service was quick, and it was relatively dead when we went in at around 3pm.
google avatar

Trevor B.

Yelp
I ordered the Shish Tawook. This is a shawarma style chicken inside of a pita wrap. It was extremely good and came with a side of fries. This is a small local business that I have heard great things about for years. The owner and the employee working were extremely efficient at taking, preparing, and providing each order. They have a large menu with a variety of options, including those for vegetarians.
google avatar

Lindsey W.

Yelp
They don't miss! Every time I order here, the food is excellent! The greek salad with grilled chicken is my usually go-to. Today I switched it up and ordered a cold turkey & cheese sub (w/ provolone) and spinach pie and wasn't disappointed. The sub roll was so soft, turkey was seasoned with black pepper, and the tomato was perfectly ripe. Spinach pie was bussin' as well.
google avatar

Erin B.

Yelp
Have walked passed this restaurant so many times and am so happy to finally eat here. It was amazing. We got grape leaves which came out warm and were delicious. A spinach pie which was crispy on the outside with a perfect combo of spinach and cheese. The gyro meat was cooked to perfection, we got the gyro sandwich and Byblos special. Hands down one of the best spots we have eaten at in a while! #cleanplateclub

Alicia E.

Yelp
Amazing food. Truly tastes like what I ate in Greece. So delicious, reasonably priced and great service. Definitely worth a trip to eat here. We will be back!
google avatar

Madhu S.

Yelp
If you like Greek food you have to go!! Have been multiple times after discovering it when going to the zoo down the street. I've had the chicken shawarma and gyro and both are amazing! Chicken was seasoned well (I feel like I'm usually picky with chicken in my shawarma and sometimes have had more bland chicken) and the Toum in my shawarma was amazing! Only thing that would make me even happier here is fries in my shawarma and wasn't too happy with the spinach pie
google avatar

Priscilla T.

Yelp
4.5 stars! Got the Byblos Special with half chicken and half gyro and a side of Greek Salad. Employees were super friendly, and service was QUICK!! Food was delicious and filling. Flavorful and affordable. The special came with rice, pita, hummus, and tzatziki. The pita was very thin and just ok. Got to try some fries, and those were decent too. $10 minimum for credit card, otherwise, bring some cash.
google avatar

Ali D.

Yelp
We had the chicken shawarma and the gyro. Both were delicious! Everyone was very nice. Highly recommend!

Shane Patrick R.

Yelp
Had a delicious chicken shawarma. Would recommend. Fast service. This may be subjective but I feel better after eating here

Fars F.

Yelp
Byblos is one of the few remaining cheapish, totally delicious, neighborhood spots around. We've been enjoying Marco's cooking for 15 years, and there's no replacement. Everything is good. We particularly like the chicken shish taouk and gyro. Fingers crossed this place never changes. I wish there were many more places like Byblos in DC.
google avatar

J. O.

Yelp
Delicious. I got the Byblos Special with Gyro. So good!! Mmm, flavorful , and it comes with a pita. I would go back to get the same thing or try other things on the menu. The person that managed my order was nice. Great convenient location on Connecticut Avenue as well, and less than a 4+minute walk from the Cleveland Park Metro station.

Sherri O.

Yelp
wayyyy overpriced for a "greek salad" no olives no dressing not great at all don't come here better places nearby
google avatar

Matt C.

Yelp
I've had a lot of Mediterranean food in my life being from Los Angeles, so I had this Lebanese/Mediterranean place as just one of many places I've eaten at; I was wrong! The kofta was so soft and flavourful, and on the opposite end, the lentil soup was by and far one of the best soups I've ever tasted! The owner Marc and his crew makes some of the best tasting rice, falafel, and mezze plate I've had in a looooong time! I highly recommended coming here if you live in not only the Cleveland, but in the DMV area! While we were sitting there, many different kinds of people came in from police, secret service, locals, a lot of to-go orders and tourists too! The staff, owner and food from Byblos cannot have been any better, kudos!

Victoria A.

Yelp
The food was good, but my girlfriend (obviously a woman) was misgendered numerous times. Not a safe place for the LGBT+ community.

A M.

Yelp
All the food here is Delicious very flavorful! Definitely recommend it particularly the chicken shawarma!

Kenneth M.

Yelp
Walked into this deli honestly not expecting much. Looked pretty ok from the outside, but didn't quite seem so welcoming inside. There were two people behind the counter, both who were very reluctant to acknowledge me, never mind take my order. I eventually ordered a pork gyro with the spinach pie. When I took a bite into my "pork gyro", it was just a turkey wrap. How that happens doesn't make quite much sense. However, I do have to say that the spinach pie came out great, little too much oil though. Definitely not worth it.
google avatar

June Y.

Yelp
Heard great things about Marco. super genuine and a great chef. This place deserves all the customers in the area. One of the best greek foods in the area money can buy. You won't regret going.
google avatar

Ben B.

Yelp
Very good local spot. Not much else to say, the food is very good and priced fairly. I like getting the spinach pie then adding gyro meat to the side salad. Owner and employees are very friendly as well
google avatar

Chenée T.

Yelp
Byblos Deli is very unassuming, but very quick and casual if you're looking for that! I'm a sucker for falafel, so I got a falafel pita and fries. The pita was more of a burrito tortilla consistency which I wasn't a huge fan of. The falafel also lacked some flavor and I felt like it was overpowered by the large amounts of hummus that were in the wrap. I think overall the falafel pita fell a little flat for me. I also ordered fries to go with my pita and they were great and hot and very fresh. Overall, it was a solid meal and I'd love to try other recommended things on the menu.
google avatar

Abby D.

Yelp
my girlfriend and i love this place. friendly service and DELICIOUS food. just a really excellent neighborhood Mediterranean deli and facet of the cleaveland park community.

Anika B.

Yelp
Best Greek food I've had in the DC area. The owner is very friendly and prices are great. My favorite is the gyro, stuffed grape leaves, and the tzatziki.
google avatar

Mae B.

Yelp
A really spectacular restaurant with great tasting Mediterranean food! I've been here a handful of times with my family, and we always leave extremely satisfied and full. Their plates are generously portioned, cooked to perfection, and ready without having to wait too long. We always order the byblos special platter with their gyro meat. Not always a huge fan of gyro meat, but their seasoning is wonderful and tasty. All around a special restaurant- comforting food and excellent service.

Yelp
I live down the street from this place. Summertime near the National Zoo can get pretty mobbed with people, so be prepared. After flying home from the Southwest, it was time to have two meals in one as fatigue set in and home cooking wasn't going to happen. We stopped in here on a weekday afternoon and there was only one other customer, so naturally, I was a bit skeptical. It didn't help that the owner and his assistant both seemed rather grumpy and wasn't really excited to see customers. No smile, no greeting, just stern faces and intense stares. But never mind this behavior because the food here is solid. I guess the owner knows this, so no need for pleasantries. I ordered the Byblos combo ($7.95) and my dining mate had the chicken shawarma sandwich. My dining companion has been here several times in the past and reported the food was very decent and the chicken was marinated well and cooked to order. I'd also comment that the Byblos combo (vegetarian) which comes with hummus, baba ganoush, salad, 4 grape leaves and pita bread was excellent and flavorful. Portion size was large and I did end up sharing my food. This combo is great value and taste for the money. I'd definitely come back again when I'm in the mood for Greek food again. I do feel quite lucky to live a stone's throw away from this place. I just wished that the owner could be a bit merrier in his work. After all, his food is well executed, delicious and economical. He should be proud of his cooking and beaming from ear to ear.

Yelp
If you want home made, fresh and local Greek food, this place is a hidden gem. Located in the Cleveland Park neighborhood of D.C., I was delighted by every thing I ate. We ordered carry out on a Saturday night because i was craving a good gyro. The babaganoush was perfectly smoked and served with thin pieces of pita. The gyro meat was sliced right off the spit and was so fresh, it wasn't greasy. We ordered the Byblos special platter with gyro meat. It came with hummus and tzatziki on the side. I substituted rice for Greek salad too and the salad was fresh and tasty. Highly recommend if you are in the D.C. area for a quick carry out. They do have seating, but it's tight and pretty simple.

Wende D.

Yelp
Amazing authentic Greek food at an affordable price. Everyone in our crew LOVED their meal. Service was great. Thanks Mark!
google avatar

Matt D.

Yelp
This place is the real deal: authentic, fresh, and delicious. And very reasonably priced. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Dani W.

Yelp
Byblos is a neighborhood staple! This is my favorite Mediterranean spot in town. Whatever you order, make sure you the the garlic paste. It is a potent mash of garlic that so so good and needs to put on everything. They also have incredible baklava. They give you a hearty piece. It's a sweet fluffy pastry with just a hint of savory and completely delicious.
google avatar

Krys G.

Yelp
Stopped by to stuff our faces after a day at the Zoo. It was late afternoon and we saw this place come up on Yelp. The two guys inside were very nice to us. There was a daily special that they offered at a really good price. There are a few seats inside and a patio area outside. The food we got was fresh and tasty. Service was pretty quick too. Would totally recommend this place to anyone who is in the area and wants some fresh tasty food.

Anne P.

Yelp
Delicious food! Smells amazing every time I walk by, finally tried and glad I did. Give it a try you won't be disappointed
google avatar

Guillaume L.

Yelp
Byblos Deli is absolutely amazing! Stumbled upon it based on the many positive recommendations on Yelp and from coworkers. The folks here are friendly! Cannot wait to try all of their food!

Sasha H.

Yelp
amazing greek restaurant, no frills but great food. i had the best gyro i've ever had and good steak and cheese sandwich too. the fries are a very generous portion for only being $3. i'd definitely go again
google avatar

Rebecca H.

Yelp
Byblos is fantastic. Although it seems a bit quiet when you walk past their food is so fresh and simply satisfying. The prices are extremely reasonable $8-$10 for a meal and the service is friendly. Definitely a no frills type of place but if I lived in this neighborhood it would definitely be a once a week type of place. I got the classic gyro on pita and it was so fresh and the meat was hot! My boyfriend got the salad with gyro meat and he was also very happy.

Shanna A.

Yelp
This place was so delicious. Probably one of the best falafel pitas I've had in 15 years. Went in and was offered several great options as suggestions. I was able to customize my order and didn't have to wait long at all. Very nice people. Just wish baklava had been available but they were out still from night before.
google avatar

Tony L.

Yelp
Byblos is your generic, no frills quick Greek bite in the area. Instead of paying the exorbitant costs of eating right outside of the National Zoo (only newbs eat at museums/nearby!), I bike shared it a few blocks up to an area for more affordable eats. Everything else was closed for the 3pm lunch lull, but thankfully Byblos was open. I got the chicken shawarma and babbaganoush. The chicken shawarma was not the sliced pit meat you'd expect, but chicken chunks - it came with a tsatsiki sauce and French fries inside which u didn't mind. The babbaganoush was fair also, but seemed to come out of a jar with cold pita on the side. They had outdoor seating and brought the food out - which was nice for people watching. Honestly, it something else was open during this time I'd probably go for that, but Byblos is a good old fashioned "meh".
google avatar

Justin S.

Yelp
Byblos serves some of the best middle eastern cuisine I've ever had. The restaurant doesn't look like much, but the food is delicious. I make sure to eat there whenever I'm in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Philip B.

Yelp
Great values here and hot food! The staff is just wonderful, including the entire restaurant in cheery conversation. My beef and lamb gyro was stuffed with meat and the flavors are great! With plenty of seating it was a relaxed place to eat lunch in the middle of the work day. And portion sizes are big!
google avatar

Misha P.

Yelp
I'll start off by saying this is my first review ever! But I had such a great experience picking up from them 30 minutes before they closed, that I figured I might as well say something about it. Chef/Owner was visibly tired (I read he works 7 days a week?) but still took the time to explain the preparation and ingredients of the different types of meat they offered. On top of that, gave me a sampling of each meat to add to my original order! So that I may "experience" the other foods they offer... and experience I did. Solid overall restaurant, needs more traffic. Will be back again in the future
