I went in here a few times and on different trips since my initial review, and, on a few occasions, C&S Coffee Shop seemed to be dipping into 3 territory and then it bounced right back up to a 4. It all seems to depend on what you are ordering.
You can get one of the lunch specials (they used to or still run the Malibu chicken sandwich lunch special) and, while it will fill you up, you won't be singing the praises about it. It's a good value, though.
I did have a breakfast here and it was closer to a 3. I think it was a one-off event.
On the last visit, I returned with the friend who lives in the High Desert and who first introduced me to C&S. My friend liked what he ate - a patty melt with onion rings. And I really liked my chicken sandwich which I got with zucchini sticks. I don't know if it was because he might have seen me photographing my sandwich, which my friend always remarks is weird, but the cook was in the dining area and asked me how I liked it. Affirmative!
I was actually going to get a date shake. After seeing it on the menu board for years, I had decided to try it. It turned out that date shakes were not available. These last few years have been strange times with supply and demand issues. Not only that, when are dates in season?
The prices are fair and you get good portions. They do take plastic, but add a minor charge to cover its use. This is prominently displayed and is not a surprise. Also, one cannot tip on the plastic, so bring some cash to handle this part of the transaction.
The service, which also dipped a time or two, was right back up. These are friendly, humorous folks. This is the part that cracks me - the diversity inside C&S. While the ownership and employees are likely long-time area residents, the customer base is all over the map. You'll see a lot of locals in here, regularly taking meals. On the other hand, the owners and employees have been "forced" to become cosmopolitan to serve the many visitors, many of which could be foreigners, en route to and from Joshua Tree National Park. Over the years, different merchants on CA 62 have told me that a lot of Germans and Australians come through. (I believe it ... because the ones I know or meet seem to go ape shit over the desert, the Grand Canyon, and the Southwest in general with respect to things American ... and put some serious miles on rental cars in the process.)
One thing will easily assure C&S is in 4 star territory. That would be the big laugh you will get from the aqua colored booths and chairs that look like they might have been in an old Rambler, or popular even before there were "Ma Bell" "Princess" phones with "Touch Tone" dialing.
I could go with 4 stars for each of the letters in the word A-Q-U-A. But, even without the preceding math, C&S Coffee Shop is a solid "old school" 4 star experience.
