Yelp
GF came across this place online somehow because usually we're basic bitches and go to the places with a gazillion reviews. The main appeal was the copious vegetarian options on their menu. We had actually planned on going to another very popular restaurant in the area but that didn't work out, nor did our back up. We started making the trek up to Cabana from the main shit are but we were interrupted by tortential downpours that remind me of my Caribbean medical school days which just seemed appropriate for the Caribbean vibe this place is going for.
I was very pleased by both the drink menu and the vegetarian options. I was eyeing the painkiller with rum, cream of coconut, orange, and pineapple juice but couldn't resist the frozen pina colada which was spectacular and with none of the fake bullshit artificial-tasting pina colada mixer business. It was worth the exorbitant calories I'm sure it contains. GF ordered the painkiller which gave me an opportunity to sample it. It was enjoyable but I preferred mine.
They have some intriguing starters and salads but because we decked into another restaurant en route during one of the monsoons earlier, I was running out of gastric space and elected to go with the street tacos which are three flour tortillas surrounding avocado mash, cilantro onions, shredded cabbage, jalapeño, salsa verde, crema, lime, and served alongside red beans and yellow rice. The tacos come with your choice of protein and the most exciting part about this is that their protein choices include CRISPY TOFU. The tofu is actually extremely crispy, they aren't fucking around there. I'm actually curious to know how exactly they make it so crispy. Even tofu dislikers like my Dad ("it's just too mushy") would enjoy this. I requested my tacos without onions which they were able to accommodate without incident. Hell actually froze over on this particular night because I didn't have much of an appetite and only put down one of the tacos. They were good with a solid combo of flavors and textures but I just wasn't feeling that vibe tonight. I did thoroughly enjoy the fuck out of the rice and beans and that shit didn't stand a chance.
GF ordered the lemon thyme roasted salmon with fingerling potatoes, asparagus, cauliflower served with roasted garlic kale pesto. I took one of the team and helped her out with the vegetables which were all tasty and the pesto added a little something extra.
We also were slutty bitches and ordered a side of their wasabi mashed potatoes because how could you not???? The mashed potatoes were to die (and immune to my appetite issue lmao) They were warm and creamy heaven but my only complaint is that they didn't taste much like wasabi in flavor or in heat. It is an interesting concept but it wasn't entirely pulled off. Again, don't think I didn't lick the bowl clean.
Our server also provided excellent service, He checked on us frequently, put up with a neighboring patron who was insufferable, and was very kind and friendly. The vibe was dimly lit but tropically decorated. All things considered, this is a solid option.
EDIT: after attempting to eat the leftover taco it occurred to me that there are in fact onions in here and is likely the reason I wasn't super into them. Bummer that they couldn't comply with my request.
