Vanier Sugar Shack – Ottawa, Ontario - Gastro Obscura

"When most people think about maple syrup production, they likely envision pancakes in the countryside, not a city with a population just shy of 1 million—and they certainly don’t imagine arson and royalty. All that changes when they visit the Vanier Museopark Sugar Shack in Ottawa, Canada, believed to be the world’s most urban maple syrup producer. Located about five kilometers from Ottawa’s Parliament Hill in the historically francophone neighborhood of Vanier, the non-profit Vanier Sugar Shack is surrounded by 17.5 acres of forest. Each year, an army of volunteer “maple farmers” taps the trees and collects the maple sap. They also collect sap from their neighbor, the governor general of Canada. As the governor general represents the monarchy, the maple farmers are essentially harvesting sap that’s fit for a king. Their efforts result in 400 to 600 liters of maple syrup a year. In 2020, tragedy struck the Vanier Museopark’s Sugar Shack when a devastating arson attack decimated the historic property. In a remarkable show of community solidarity, rebuilding efforts began immediately. The new and improved building reopened just in time for the 2023 maple harvest. Know Before You Go The Museopark’s annual Sugar Festival occurs in late March through early April. The program typically includes culinary experiences, traditional music, family activities, and ample opportunities to taste the season’s first batch of maple syrup." - linkogecko, Vanessa Chiasson

I went with my grandchildren to the festival today and was so disappointed! The food was not what you would expect from a sugar shack. The eggs were powdered and for 15.00 you got one small scoop of powdered eggs, two sausages (no bacon) and three teeny tiny wafer thin pancakes with no syrup. They were offering free coffee and hot chocolate and at 11:00 they had no hot chocolate left for the kids and no cream for the coffee. The taffy on snow was also a huge disappointment. It was the size of a quarter on a stick and the syrup was crystallized so not very good. My grandson wouldn’t even eat it. I asked for directions from one of the volunteers holding a sign saying that she was the person to ask questions to and she had no clue where anything was. For families who are struggling financially these days and there are many it was an extremely expensive, disappointing experience. There were some fun areas like the paint by number and the gentleman volunteer there was amazing. Very patient with the kids. And the pony rides were fun but not cheap for three turns around a small area. I highly doubt I will ever go back.

Breakfast pancakes were lovely with plenty of maple syrup on the table to indulge. The hot chocolate was the best we've had since we last made ourselves one ! Staff were pleasant and service was good. We had a little trouble finding it because it's within the parc and not well signposted, but we're glad we didn't give up (we travelled from downtown Ottawa on the number 7 bus)...

I’m giving this sugar shack a five star rating. Although it is not your typical full experience sugar shack it is pretty close to what you can get in the center of a greatly populated city! You purchase a ticket and collect your meal so it is self serve and they do have a certain number of seating available so depending on the time of day you arrive, it is possible that there might be a bit of wait, but for what the overall experience represents I believe it is all worth it. Thank you for this heartwarming experience available in the centre of a city in preserving this little area of maple trees. I highly recommend.

The building itself and the area is nice which makes for a cozy atmosphere! As other reviews have said though, the food is bad. The eggs were strange (maybe powdered eggs??), the meat was off (no flavour, frozen sausages, weird smell). The most shocking part however was the price. Take a look at the picture, that plate was $26. Really unfortunate as it could be a great experience! But..... they do sell beer! :)

I just went for the sugar festival. I thought it being a sugar shack would guarantee good food and taffy but I was wrong. The breakfast was 15 (normally 25) and all we got was one ice cream scoop of powdered eggs with a weird after taste, 2-3 sausages (no bacon) and two teeny tiny thin little pancakes. Terrible taste. The volunteers did not have any info. They couldn't direct me to the ponies. One of them did not even know what taffy was when I asked how to get there...oh and many of them did not speak English. Luckily I know French but if you do not, you may have trouble asking for information from volunteers. Lastly, the taffy was a MAJOR disappointment. The serving was teeny tiny, the syrup was not made properly. It was crystallized so it felt like chewing on sand. It melted so quickly that my son took two steps away from the stand and his taffy fell off the stick. The volunteers had no idea how to roll the taffy onto the stick. I watched as they struggled with each stick and loosely and incorrectly wound the teeny amount of taffy on the stick. And lastly, the taffy was not the usual dark brown of a good sugar bush taffy. It 2 was clear and yellowish/gold. It was just not made properly. Overall the rest of the festival was fine. The ponies were cute (although the rides are kinda short), the petting zoo was fine, the bouncy castles were fun. Axe throwing, painting, live music, some vendors. All lovely. But the food and the lack of knowledge even from those holding the "information" signs was a let down.

Renovated modern shack inside the Richelieu park Vanier. Managed by the Parc Museo. They have interior space as well as modern yo-yo date equipments to produce maple syrup on site. They also host annual sugar shack for the community during March as well as offer educational events for schools. Contact museo for opening hours as this is not a business open everyday

A visit to the grounds of the Vanier Museopark is a great way to learn and experience an iconic part of Canadian history and culture, maple syrup. The 17.5 acre forested maple sugar groove provides maple sap during the spring. The sap is tapped and harvested to be boiled/ evaporated into a concentrated tasty maple syrup. At this location there has been a Sugar Shack since 1939. The most recent Shack burnt down in August 2020 and currently there are plans to rebuild it once again (scheduled fall 2022) Once built, we can come back to have some delicious maple syrup on pancakes, or syrup on a stick once again. Fun facts * Maple Sap is a colorless liquid and about 2% sugar * Sugar tapping season lasts for about 6 to 8 weeks * Sap is boiled at 212°F to make maple syrup * It takes about 40 gallons of maple sap to make 1 gallon of maple syrup. Very disappointed we left from Winchester On. With 2 guests from Toronto arrived there to find the door closed. We call but message only the admin. Not impressed at all.
